Q: How to install wifi in Macbook Pro

TulonCurrently I am using a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.8.5 & I just notice that there is no "wifi option" in this Machine. Because, to make that back in Desktop menu bar I go to: Preference >> Network >> click "+" button from the left list >> and in the interface section But, I found nothing named "wif...

It's almost as if your Macbook doesn't see its Wifi hardware. Try opening "System Information" from the Utilities folder and looking for Wi-Fi under Networks there. Does it say anything?

@AlistairMcMillan Thanks for commenting. Yes there is something. The details are about Software versions. ` Software Versions: CoreWLAN: 3.4 (340.18) CoreWLANKit: 2.0.2 (202.11) Menu Extra: 8.1 (810.11) configd plug-in: 8.5 (850.252) System Information: 8.3 (830.5) IO80211 Family: 5.3 (530.5) Diagnostics: 2.1 (210.25) AirPort Utility: 6.3.1 (631.4)`

Below the "Software" text, there should be text just below that for "Interfaces". Does it have this text about Interfaces?

@AlistairMcMillan I attach the screen shot in my post. This is what I found.

So your Macbook isn't seeing its Wi-Fi hardware at all. Did you have Wi-Fi on this Macbook before? For the sake of testing, if you restart your Mac, hold down the Option key and choose Recovery does it offer your wireless networks then?

4:39 AM
Yes, I am pretty sure that, this machine had wifi before. And right now, the actual user of this Mac tell me, after migrating the OSX, the wifi option disappear. If I do Recovery, is there any chance of erasing HD file or something?? I don't have any idea about it. Just asking for safety.
Yes, I am here. :)

Recovery is just a simple mode with a bunch of tools. It won't do anything until you tell it.
But you should be able to see right away whether Wi-Fi is available.

ok
So, after recovery, the machine get restart again and is it like that, the wifi option should be in desktop menu bar?

No, I'm just suggesting you try Recovery mode to see if Wi-Fi appears within Recovery mode. To help identify whether the problem is hardware or software. If it doesn't appear in Recovery then that suggests the problem is hardware (i.e. the hardware is missing or not working). If it appears in Recovery but not in OS X proper then that suggests something is wrong with the software inside OS X.

Sorry
After recovery mode I get your point
Yes, the wifi option was in the menu bar
So, it seems like the hardware is ok

Cool. Easier to fix software problems. :)
So if you go back in OS X it is still missing?

4:53 AM
Hope so :)
OS X?
Currently where I'm?

You are back in regular Mac operating system and Wi-Fi is still missing?

yes, it's not here

Can you open a Terminal and try running "kextstat | grep AirPort"?

ok
Let me spell it with you
kextstat(space)|(space)grep AirPort

Hoping that it'll come back with something like "com.apple.driver.AirPort.SOMETHING". Mine says "com.apple.driver.AirPort.Brcm4331" but yours might be different depending on which version of Macbook you have.

4:59 AM
with no ""

Yes, that exactly.

ok
if I just type this after opeing terminal
nothing happen
then I typed "sudo so"
password
kextstat | grep AirPort
but nothing happen

So no AirPort driver is being loaded. Strange.

Let me try it again
1 sec please
no luck

No problem.

5:01 AM
:(

Try "kextfind | grep AirPort" without "".

ok
yes
these are the lines i get replying back
/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortAtheros40.kext
/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcm4331.kext
/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcm4360.kext
/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleAirPortBrcm43224.kext

So the drivers are there. For some reason it is failing to load one.
Could you try "sysctl hw.model" so I can find out which model of Macbook you have, so i can work out which driver it should be loading? Once we know that we can try manually loading the driver to see if it works.

ok :)
MacBook5,1

Cool. Try "sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcm4331.k‌ext". It'll prompt for password.

5:12 AM
ok
nothing happen
just sh-3.2#
:(

Try "kextstat | grep AirPort" now.

ok
nothing
happen
By the way, Thanks a lot for your time man

Strange.

It's really appreciable :)

No worries.

5:20 AM
1st I copy & past the commands in terminal
then type one by one
but not working,
i mean no error in typing that's for sure
:)

That is okay. If you enter the command wrong it would give you an error message. If there is no error, then you are copy&pasting and typing correctly.

ahh ok

I need to go to bed soon. But can you try one more for me? "sudo kextutil -v /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcm4331.k‌ext"

ohh sorry if i hold you here
sure

It should say back...
/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcm4331.kext appears to be loadable (not including linkage for on-disk libraries).
Loading /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcm4331.kext.

No worries. Is an interesting problem to try to solve.

5:23 AM
it gives me this
No kernel file specified, using '/mach_kernel'

McMillan I don't want to hold you here

So driver for WiFi is loaded. If you go into System Preferences -> Network panel can you add Wi-Fi?

pressing + button?

No
wifi isn't listed there
that's the main fact i mentioned in my post earlier
in interface drop down list
blue tooth pan
eathernet
and others are available
except wifi
If you want we can discuss about it latter, just from here

Yep. So we know hardware is okay because it appears in Recovery mode. And it looks like driver is loading okay. I don't know why Wi-Fi doesn't appear. :(
Yeah, sorry I need to get some sleep. Maybe someone else will have more ideas tomorrow. Sorry I couldn't fix it.

5:29 AM
yes, it seems like some strange thing happen to this machine
no problem dude
Thanks a lot for your all effort
I appreciate it very much
So, good night, have a nice dream
:)

Bye. :)
