Q: Did native Mexicans prefer Spanish rulers to the Aztecs?

Nikolay NenovIn his letter to Charles V, Hernan Cortes states that "it was only necessary to threaten to return them [the natives] to their native masters in order to make them serve the Spaniards very willingly." (source: "The Encomienda in New Spain: The Beginning of Spanish Mexico", pp. 61). Is there evid...

It really needed to be made. I edited the title a bit further to make it clear we are talking about a specific area, not the whole hemisphere.

@twosheds - "much historiography (e.g. Bernard Bailyn and Gordon Wood) plays down the importance of taxes. The Revolution was about who was taxing and why, not taxes per se"
Add me to that, for what its worth. For Xmas last year I got a great compilation of nearly all founding documents, from essays petitioning the King during the colonial period, through Common Sense, the DoI, Articles of Confederation, Constutution, Fedralist Papers, etc.
I haven't quite got through all the papers, but I got through all the pre-Constitution stuff.
Its pretty clear reading it through that there was an escalating dispute with "the King's Government" in England over the Colonial's right as Englishmen to run their own affairs vs. Parliment's right to run things in English colonies.
For example, I read 29 items (counts?) in the DoI's "Indictments" section, and only one mentions imposed taxes.
