MaheshHow was sandhyavandanam performed before the age of Vishwamitra? Since the two most important parts of sandhyavandanam - arghyam and gayatri japam - involve the gayatri (savitri) mantra, I was curious to know what our ancestors did before that.

@Pandya You may be interested in my question above, about a Brahmavidya that's not part of the list of 32 Brahmavidyas.
@Pandya And it's of particular relevance to you since you're a Samaveda Brahmin. The Ranayaniya Shakha and the Kauthuma Shakha are very close to each other in content; the Chandogya Upanishad is found in both. But this seems to be about a passage that's found in the Ranayaniya Shakha but not the Kauthuma Shakha.
@Pandya The reason this passage is discussed in the Brahma Sutras is that there's an issue about whether this passage should be combined with the various Brahma Vidyas found in the Chandogya Upanishad, they're all found in the same Shakha. The conclusion is that they should not be combined, because this Brahmavidya is about meditating on Brahman as being very large, whereas the Brahmavidyas found in the Chandogya Upanishad involves meditating on Brahman as very small, like dwelling in the heart.
