are you a hardware designer? do you know VHDL or Verilog? implement some CAESAR candidates and get your work cited https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/crypto-competitions/wRZgTRPzziM

6 hours later…
11:55 AM
@AviD - turns out that it doesn't require a tray. It sits in the slot and a screw holds down the other end. It's just a small board with ICs on it :-)

@RoryAlsop heh, interesting

Kenorb is persistent. Reckon he just has a bee in his bonnet about having some questions closed on Sec.SE?

@RoryAlsop either that, or he just wants to "own" an SE community.
should tell him that it's not all its cracked up to be...

Lol

I think he just doesnt get how SEs are run, thats why he's upset about questions being closed.

11:59 AM
Yeah - actually that sounds about right based on many of his comments

HE WILL FREE US FROM THE TYRANNY OF A WELL-RUN SITE!

@RoryAlsop hows the PC building going?

@AviD: Newer cases just let you screw it in at the bottom of the caddy
3.5 inchers are tool free
Unless you mean M2

no, I meant the caddy
not all cases have them

12:10 PM
^ was my , lack, of view this morning

I cant see what you're talking about, it is obscured by all that fog

@AviD precisely, that's the cobbler we took a walk up this morning
about 4.5 hours all in
so that's my excercise for the day done!

12:24 PM
The case does allow for an ssd to fit in at the bottom, if it is one of the normal ones
I am existing delivery of some of the essential parts (cable adapters etc) to let me finish the build next week
And the new monitors should arrive before the weekend - then Claire is away for a week, so I will have time to finish up rearranging my office
The Cobbler looks interesting - a bit like the first view of the alien ship in Alien...

@RoryAlsop yeah it was nice, we were up early (Started at 7ish) but by the time we came back down it was mobbed
views were a bit come and go..
@RoryAlsop which monitors brand/model did you go for?

Asus PB287Q 28 inch Widescreen Ultra HD 4K LED Monitor (100M:1, 300 cd/m2, 3840 x 2160, 1ms, DP/HDMI/MHL)

@RoryAlsop ooh you can rotate them

Was a difficult decision

@RoryAlsop yeah there's a ton of models out there hard to know what to pick

12:30 PM
The ones I really wanted have a 144hz refresh rate
But they were a bit expensive
Find one that looked great but eventually discovered they only did 30hz - which I couldn't cope with

@RoryAlsop yeah that'd be a bit lame..

afternoon

@RоryMcCune mmmm cobbler! :)

@RoryAlsop guess what I'm booting :o
@RoryAlsop I'll give you a hint: ipl a80

@RoryAlsop hehehe true, I was wondering what it reminds me of
@LucasKauffman DR DOS?

12:38 PM
@TildalWave alas no cigar

wot da ...?
@LucasKauffman gotta say you have some really odd fetishes

@TildalWave I love to torture myself with cobol
2

@LucasKauffman - on a Sunday? Heh - I remember when that would take all Sunday

@LucasKauffman I see :) I'm glad to report that I haven't had the chance to do that since college
@RoryAlsop I hear there's crap weather up north of the continental Europe
so maybe that was intended?
still, he's online so it's not really armageddon
beautiful sunny 30°C here tho :P
which makes me wonder what the heck am I doing here? LOL
beer time... baiii

1:00 PM
@RoryAlsop it's still loading, fortunately it's running in a docker container so I can leave it unattended

Weather here is beautiful @TildalWave. Was outside at the cricket club gala yesterday (much cider was consumed) and today I have been outside in the sun for 7 hours so far
Loving the weather
I accidentally got reading one of Claire's romance novels (as there was nothing else to hand) and the lead characters just had to bring back a mainframe and 60 circuits to replace a drowned telco...
They IPL'ed in under an hour.
Not sure I believe the story any more

@LucasKauffman ha! see I've converted you to the wonders of docker. you should upload to the hub once you've built it! I'm sure IBM won't mind :op

1:32 PM
@RoryAlsop: did they do hot torrid things in the server room?

1:53 PM
Afterwards...

@RоryMcCune well I already made a hercules image, the z/OS files I will keep for myself :P
@RоryMcCune It's too bad IBM doesn't give out free images to play around with tho :(

@LucasKauffman It's flipping ridiculous and a large part of why there's no software community for z/OS

@RоryMcCune that and the fact no one likes COBOL or PL/1

@LucasKauffman ahh PL/1 there's a way to stump people, ask if they can do a nice PL/1 code review

@RоryMcCune you're laughing, I actually have one coming up

2:09 PM
@LucasKauffman actually I'm remembering that about 10 years ago I had to sort one out, ended up finding an EY senior Manager in South africa as the only person who could do it

@RоryMcCune We actually were in a situation where the only person having the competences for a source code review ended up being Ken Allan, but the client didn't find his rate acceptable

@LucasKauffman someone needed their sports car stress tested? :op

@RоryMcCune no some specific mainframe thing, Ken was the only profile who had listed it as a competence

2:25 PM
@LucasKauffman of course, everybody else was smart enough to erase that

Lol - I remember you doing that search @Rоry. Very similar to that Kiwi we were going to use for COBOL until we agreed I should just learn it.

@RоryMcCune hey now, I've already become an expert in 4GL....

@AviD good point, I've endorsed you for that on Linkedin :op

@RоryMcCune oh crap, didja?

@RoryAlsop @LucasKauffman don't forget to endorse @AviD for 4GL on linkedin...
@AviD but of course :) knowing how much you love it, how could I not!

2:28 PM
jeezus maaan, you really did it
you maniacs!
@RоryMcCune ya know what, I'm willing to do it too, and for not much more than Ken Allan's rate.
@LucasKauffman what is Ken's rate?

@AviD these days it must be over £800/hour

@RоryMcCune daaaamn
thats higher than mine

EY partners eh!

@RоryMcCune yeah well they dont really do code reviews, do they

@RоryMcCune probably around that

2:31 PM
I'm surprised he even has an hourly rate, and not just charge for full days

one hour of a partner = 1 day of a junior consultant
@AviD it's because they almost never book full days

@AviD ah no they charge for partners reviews on jobs, which are generally shorter than one day

@LucasKauffman yeah, and still

@AviD it made doing small jobs as EY almost impossible, 'cause every job had to budget for at least one hour of partner time for review

sure. when I was at $CONSULTINGCOMPANY it was pretty much the same, though obviously to a lesser extent.

2:34 PM
@AviD print $CONSULTINGCOMPANY

@LucasKauffman you're on my linkedin, look it up

ah I see it

1 hour later…
3:49 PM
Sorry there folks

4:13 PM
@Quill no problems, we're fine with people having scripts for stalking @LucasKauffman :)

@RоryMcCune BigBrother's always watching ;-)

4:33 PM
hello
stalking?

in Ministry of Truth, 9 secs ago, by Quill
2:33:45 BB> Lucas Kauffman joined The DMZ.

@Quill I see

I've built a general chatroom monitor
You happened to be the unfortunate soul at the end of it's barrel

@Quill oh, maybe you can help me actually with a piece of code I still need?

maybe, what kind of code

4:36 PM
@Quill I've not yet looked into it, but by any chance do you have a listener in python (or other language) which captures the messages live in a chatroom?
@Quill Im building a system to display statistics about what's being said in the dmz with Spark and an Elasticsearch backend

There's a JavaScript listener you can run for these rooms

mmm need to have a look how that one works then

I think there was a Python listener on StackApps, although I don't have it favourited

Ill have a look into it then
I've already indexed most of the dmz

I do believe Tavern On The Meta's resident bot runs on Python

4:38 PM
@Quill open sourcE?

yeah, should be

5:18 PM
have you been commenting on reddit again?

5:38 PM
@RоryMcCune I deny all involvement

I bet you had nothing to do with that either
I bet @kalina would not be happy to see that
^^^ oh NSFW in case anyone didn't realise!

1 hour later…
6:55 PM
@RоryMcCune you have given my entire family (except Lexie, who loves ponies and that sort of thing) the happies! Absolutely brilliant.
The only downside - Hamish is now repeating "LYRAaaaaaa"

7:55 PM
@RoryAlsop excellent, I can feel the darkness building inside him

Dies it make me sad that I want them to do all twelve episodes?

@TildalWave aye it's a spin off of that... you have watched all 12 episodes of llamas with hats haven't you?

I was in the DMZ for the past few years haven't I? :D

@TildalWave sure I just wanted to check, what with you @ 'in the original..

it's like asking me if I watched all the short clips from Friends there are on YouTube

@RoryAlsop heh, sorry to Lexie!!

8:26 PM
@RоryMcCune Llamas with Hats > Ponies with Hats

@TildalWave well the pony thing was quite funny, seeing as how they're generally a very light sweet kind of thing (AFAIK)

sure, then they bite you hand off :))
was that a straw man argument? LOL
ROFLMAO (sorry, not related, I just saw it when checking what's happening in the coming days)
