A: (Theoretically) intercepting GCHQ's smartphone exploit

XanderFirst, SMS exploits are not unheard of. Quite the opposite...Android has recently been beset by the Stagefright exploit and variants that would allow exactly the sort of things described. So, if in fact this was a real program and not simply wild speculation on Snowden's part, it may in fact ha...

I can't begin to express how pleased I am that I was able to work the Underpants Gnomes into an answer.

@StackExchange Definitely agree about oysters. They are the consistency of snot. Eugh.

@DavidFreitag Nonsense.

@Xander Every time I have oysters I regret the decision. It's like a mouthful of slightly gritty lukewarm snot.

"every time" Clearly you are not learning fast enough ;p

4:21 AM
I just don't see what is to learn about how to enjoy something like that
@JourneymanGeek Or my friends convince me "Nah it's delicious!"

To enjoy? No, to not eat something you find disgusting

@DavidFreitag So, I'm not going to dispute your experience. Taste is individual, without question. If oysters aren't your thing, I don't have any issue with that, They are lovely, however.

@Xander It's more about texture than taste
@JourneymanGeek That peer pressure, man.

@DavidFreitag Taste being a synonym to preference.

@Xander Potato tomato

4:35 AM
@DavidFreitag Fight the power. You're your own man. At worse it's eccentricity, which isn't all that bad.

@Xander I end up convincing myself that it can't be all that bad. It always is

@DavidFreitag Ok, so put it on your "Do not eat" list, and stand your ground. Nothing wrong with that. Everyone has one of those. Even me.

@Xander Oh it's on the list, along with mushrooms, olives, and anchovies.

@DavidFreitag I'm sad for you, and the culinary life that you live.

@Xander Mostly just brown rice, vegetables, and chicken.
It's simple, healthy, and most of all: cheap.

4:45 AM
@DavidFreitag Well, those are all good things.
@DavidFreitag Good, healthy, and cheap are very compelling arguments.

I bought a rice cooker that will cook 8 cups of rice. That means 1 cup of rice per day frozen in a ziplock bag and a quick heating in a pan with some sliced up chicken breast and frozen broccoli.
and a 15lb bag of brown rice for, wait for it, $4.99

Nice! Can't go wrong with that. I used to make something similar, though without the broccoli, which is a nice add. I would mix in some tuna, some black beans, a bit of plain yogurt, and some baby spinach leaves. I called it a goulash.

That's an interesting mix, I'm not sure how I would feel about that

@DavidFreitag I was running at the time, and that was the right mix of protein and carbs for me. YMMV, and subject to taste, of course.

5:02 AM
I wouldn't eat the same thing every day ;p
(In fact, outside the baked veggies, which I did twice, I've not repeated a meal in a week)
and baked veggies are cause I needed to use up cauliflower, and it was simple ;p

Good news for the guys on the other side nbcnews.com/business/travel/…

7:39 AM
@AviD pls
morning all
how is everyone today?
@AviD yeah read up the transcript :) all sounds like some pretty nice kit (although not exactly cheap!) not sure we'll end up getting anything from this round, the HoloLens was the most tempting for the Missus, but that's US-based established Devs only at this point...

8:12 AM
Morning!

great morning !

8:32 AM
@Adi excellent thanks!
I'd actually managed to figure out something quite similar to that...
@RоryMcCune heh. you gonna need to explain those then...
@RоryMcCune pfft, that's racist.

@AviD LUFS is some music term, you'll need to ask @kalina or @Simon or @RoryAlsop :)

@RоryMcCune sooo.... yeah, doesnt quite belong ;-)

IIRC it has to do with dynamic range
@AviD phhhbt we have more conversations about music on here than we do security

@AviD I did tell him to remove it

@RоryMcCune DOES.NOT.BELONG

8:35 AM
and it's just as on-topic with the nominal topic of the room as "food" and "Libations"

@RоryMcCune besides, we talk about @Simon's harddancejumpstyle, that's not really music

if we were to remove everything that doesn't belong here then you'd basically have a couple of fogeys left

@AviD we also talk about proper music

@RоryMcCune loudness

@kalina well kind of similar isn't it (in that high loudness precludes good dynamic range)?

8:37 AM
high loudness doesn't rely on a high dynamic range
in fact, louder usually results in a lower dynamic range
since in order to make something louder you reduce the quiet

@kalina that's what I meant by precludes :)

well maybe if you used simple English rather than your fancy made up words we'd have less of a problem understanding each other

effort
back many laters

@DavidFreitag My Food rule: 2 legs good. 4 legs better. 0 legs bad. 6-8 legs nope. >8 legs: Hell No!

Morning

mornin'

Mornin'
new amusing 'feature' with WIndows 10. Trying to install Citrix Receiver - it tries to persuade me to install the 'app' from Windows Store. Like I'm on a mobile device...
@kalina lol
We're Scottish

Adi
If somebody is looking for mid-level security certification and not sure where to start, I highly recommend GIAC GWEB
Man.. it's an interesting one

9:07 AM
@Adi ahh SANS stuff tends to be quite good, although really not cheap

Adi
The exam was like 890 EUR

@Adi did you do the corresponding course?

Adi
But this particular one, wow. I'm genuinely surprised
@RоryMcCune Of course not

@Adi heh, bold. Sometimes these exams are very hard to complete without info. from the corresponding course

Adi
@RоryMcCune This one was quite different, mainly because it's new
I think SANS are doing something new with their exams now

9:09 AM
@Adi is this the "proctored" bit?

Adi
@RоryMcCune No no, I think they've been proctored since 2007

I've heard that MS are doing a thing where the exam is online but they have a proctor keeping an eye on you via webcam to make sure it's actually you sitting the exam

Adi
This one was more hands on
I'll tell more about it in a minute
One question shows you a log file and asks you how an attacker might have gained access to the system
Other question shows you a piece of code and asks you what is the best way to fix a specific security issue there
Some questions are on how certain browsers handle certain headers
One category of questions was also interesting; they take 6-7 lines to propose a scenario, system setup, funding allocation etc.
Then tell you that about some security issue (XSS, SQL injection in some functionality, etc.)
and ask you what is the best way to address it
Sometimes you need to answer that installing a WAF works best, other times you need to go and review the whole code
That kind of stuff. Quite impressive

sounds good. What level of candidate is it suitable for? Sounds like quite a range of deep tech experience
Oh - this:
45
Deep Web

Proposed Q&A site for deep web lovers. Mysterious levels above level 3.

Currently in definition.

hehehehe
"How to access level 4?"

9:25 AM
@RoryAlsop are there hidden level ?

@Adi wow, that does sound pretty impressive as an exam

@RoryAlsop Can CIA spy on my computer?

@M'vy must be - the human psyche requires it
@M'vy yes
;-P

@Adi so in terms of the proctoring is that at a general exam centre or do you need to go somewhere specific for SANS type stuff..?

XD

9:27 AM
Mark has a good idea of what level 4 is so he is 1337
I must be feeling snarky today - I blame technical isues. Had to reset Good for Enterprise, RSA token and Citrix login...

inb4 this site never makes it to beta.

@M'vy ya think? ;-P

Just a hunch
Well, to their credit, the mysteriousness of the thing might be a bt more appealing than my own pen&paper proposal. (Which reached 13 followers yay \o/)

Adi
@RoryAlsop @RоryM Indeed it is. It requires quite good knowledge in multiple fields
@RoryAlsop I'd say a couple of years of hands on work experience with web security stuff should be good for this exam.

@Adi I'm trying to think whether I should add it in for my team

Adi
9:39 AM
@RoryAlsop In all honesty, I think this is one of the very few certs that I think are genuine indicators for knowledge in the field
rather than pure memorization
This, OSCP, and a couple more
I scored 85 on this one. I'm almost 100% sure I wouldn't have been able to get more than 90
It requires very good knowledge in many web-related stuff
I failed in the Silverlight and Flash security questions

@Adi also is there a syllabus that you can look at or is it just "you need to know stuff"

Adi
> Exam Certification Objectives & Outcome Statements

@Adi so some high level stuff but not a detailed thing.. interesting you were doing well to pass that, can be tricky to do exams where you've not done the attendant training or had a clear detailed syllabus

Adi
10:07 AM
@RоryMcCune Jepp. It's a generalist kinda of certificate, but not a entry-level
Oh, and there were a couple of crypto questions as well
Just basic understanding of PKI

10:45 AM
I hope you learned your lesson that on topic conversation results in a channel with only a small number of people active and hours or days between each conversation

@kalina whereas random nonsense is forever...

11:07 AM
#notToday

@RоryMcCune Is that why @RoryAlsop is so old? shots fired

today I decided to spend my time in a far more productive manner so instead of using Stack Exchange I'm all over Encyclopaedia Dramatica instead

@kalina that sounds very productive... found anything interesting ?
@TerryChia the thing about @RoryAlsop is you needn't worry about him taking revenge on you, he'll just outlive you...

@RоryMcCune only some mild brain damage and a major recalibration of my hatred scale

@kalina a major recalibration.. wow, I'd have thought you were already calibrated to that site being a hive of scum and villany

11:15 AM
while regular access of such content desensitizes you, proceeding to live a more sheltered existence resensitizes you and then you get the whole :O oh noes all over again
the worst I get on a daily basis is a Simon

@kalina which in the grand scale of things is pretty mild

and he's basically casual in comparison

@kalina ohh even when you're being nice about him, you have to call him a (filthy) casual

there's nothing implicitly wrong with being a casual

@kalina it implies

11:18 AM
also ultimately this is all your fault for linking the levels of the internet question earlier

@kalina wasn't that the other Rory?
inb4 some comment about all Rories being interchangable

the general "you"
I'm surprised there wasn't more of an issue over the whole Silk Road thing
as an interested bystander who definitely wasn't a frequent user of the site

@kalina didn't it just morph into silkroad 2 silkroad3
son of silkroad
honestly not silkroad
etc

@RоryMcCune no I mean in terms of people caught
if I had been a user I certainly would have never gone back after the "unbreakable" Silk Road got broke

@kalina ahh yeah you'd think having the server would've resulted in dealers getting popped

11:29 AM
there was a heavy use of PGP for communications

although as it was quite public, you've got to imagine that they rand for the hills when it happened.

...I suspect

@kalina people who want drugs and people who are willing to take risks to make money supplying them are a pretty much infinite quantity
(one of the many reasons jailing low-level dealers has no effect)

I kinda stopped paying attention after Silk Road, I know there was a Silk Road 2 that got busted as well but who knows what the deal is now

@kalina dunno I saw a couple of stories about dramas relating to successors but not much more than that, I'm sure there are other ones out there

11:35 AM
tbh once the first one gets busted, you can't really trust that any of the sites that pop up afterwards aren't run by the government or law enforcement

@kalina indeed, I'm sure some are

11:48 AM
Will just mean that cells are smaller, break points between every link of the chain, still will be tricky to find the king pins

12:03 PM
Murrrrnin

@RoryAlsop I still have to poke some blame at you for linking that comic in here yesterday. I haven't done anything since then. I succeeded in closing the tab now though.

@Arperum @RoryAlsop I managed to resist binge reading the whole thing marginally, but it was a close call

I missed the entire thing and thus escaped

@Arperum speaking of cool webcomics, did you ever read Freakangels..? freakangels.com/?p=23
it was good
and only 864 pages long

@RоryMcCune I read multiple years worth of comics. I escaped somewhere around 2012 or something.
@RоryMcCune DON'T LINK COMICS DURING WORK HOURS. That's evil.

12:10 PM
hey @RoryAlsop here's a question for you, as I know you've read Freakangels.. which one of them reminds you of @kalina ?
@Arperum hey @AviD keeps linkin' frickin college humor in here during work hours!
this place is bad for productivity (tm)

I clicked. I'm doomed.

@Arperum pretty much (BTW watch out some panels are NSFW) I liked that one so much I bought the hardcopy

@RоryMcCune Working from home is a blessing and a curse at the same time.

@Arperum this is true

Adi
12:43 PM
Anybody knows what the shit is going on here?
The other answer was posted 3 months after mine. It's a copy-paste of my answer
Yet it has 3 upvotes more aaand won a fucking bounty
It's a shitty copy-paste because the dude didn't even copy the link
WAT!

you got severely victimized is what happened there
and the community went along with it
conclude that everybody hates you

Adi
@kalina Too Kaliana for my tasate

wat

Adi
wat

you seem to suffer from acute extra-a-ite

12:47 PM
@Adi flagged you answer as a link only answer that adds nothing the higher voted answer adds
:P

@kalina you studying for evil classes again?

pls I teach the class

I really dislike web apps that respond with 200's when the content is 404, then put "404-not found" in the response
2
Response Codes are there for a reason!

@RоryMcCune Bah, don't try to use reason. Crazy is closer.

@RоryMcCune that just means it found the 404 page

1:01 PM
@Adi where is that?
OK found it

cc @RоryMcCune
That's hilarious.

hum why can't we recommend deletion on "first post" queue?

@Arperum heh, I'd forgotten about that

Hemi-Demi-Semi colon :))

1:37 PM
I'd use it

@RоryMcCune I'm fairly confident that, by its very nature, nobody actually uses the HDSC - more accurately, everyone abuses it.

@Iszi eh, use/abuse/ either way it'd be darn handy :)

the first and third would be super useful for me

1:55 PM
@kalina Should I start looking into a userscript that adds the sarcastises to whatever you say?

no but if you could add a "I'm not angry" to everything I say that would be helpful
because even though I insist, people still assume I'm foaming at the mouth and ready to start biting people

I have one for adding ":)" at the end
(but it's local only)

insufficient
I need a complete solution
that not only supports stack exchange but also twitter, facebook, soundcloud, instagram, youtube, any text area headed "comments", etc

I should look into the JS thingy first. Maybe there's a function called on input.
ohh
@kalina we have to dev a full browser extension there
probably mobile too?

If the person you're talking to is not or fire, you're clearly not angry.

1:59 PM
android, windows mobile for phone devices with small screens, windows desktop, also needs to support google now and cortana
@CodesInChaos at least somebody gets it
it's amazing how I can giggle and smirk my way through name calling but the moment somebody tells me I need to calm down my mood goes from yay happy to WTF

Is there any reset switch ?

yes, it's called marijuana
which I quit*
*mostly

good* for you

bad for everybody else
just how I like it
bwahahahahaha
etc

2:16 PM
ok, so I got linked to massdrop.com. Turns out you need to be registered to browse something! Who thought this could be a good idea ever?

How has this not been killed as broad/S&M already?

Q: Outsourcing software development and its effect on security

D.W.Some companies build their own software. Others outsource software development by hiring contractors or other companies to build software they need. When we need to build new custom software, is there any evidence whether the choice to develop in-house vs outsource software development has an e...

@Iszi well outsourcing software development is sadistic and masochistic

@RоryMcCune oh I was about to link a VERY ONTOPIC collegehumor in here.
but didnt get a chance....
maybe later.

@AviD No.Linking.College.Humor.In.Work.Time :op

this one IS worktime.

2:31 PM
@RоryMcCune Bearing in mind that the canonical time zone for the DMZ is U.S. Eastern.

@Iszi no

although I'm not entirely blameless here as I appear to have killed @Arperum 's participation in the room by linking him to FreakAngels...
@Iszi there is only one canonical time zone and the clue is in the name

@RоryMcCune YES. READING. BLAME.

@RоryMcCune CTZ?

Coordinated Universal Time
@Arperum sorry :op

2:32 PM
fortunately I don't click links in chat anymore
that and I'm still on TVTropes from earlier in the week

@kalina that one was a doozy, good webcomic

I remember reading the beginning of FA a few years ago.
It's finished now, right?

@CodesInChaos yeah finished a while back :( I got the hard copies
just in case the site vanished in the future

-.-

Didn't like it as much as Transmetropolitan.

2:35 PM
"FA" as an acronym is a conflict of memories

@kalina In this instance it stands for "FreakAngels"
the name of the webcomic

yes
or fallen angels from a game I used to play
or furiously angelic - one of my old names
or ...

Or Frozen Arbiter...

or Feck All...

or FAnG - a gaming community I was associated with a long time ago
(furious angels - next generation)

2:38 PM
@RоryMcCune Still not seeing "canonical" in there.

sorry I had to see if their website still existed
:p
which it doesn't
oh no
something new is coming
I hope it is new and not a database restore

@Iszi Universal... it's a bit of a clue
that the timezone is to be used, universally

nobody cares about GMT

Which comic did @RoryAlsop use to DoS @Arperum?

@CodesInChaos weregeeks.

2:40 PM
@RоryMcCune Intended to be used universally, perhaps. And certainly could be used in here. But that doesn't make it the room's official zone any more than it makes it the official time zone of the eastern U.S. despite the fact that it is indeed used in many systems and communications there.

@Arperum Never heard of that one before.

@Iszi #nobodycares

@kalina #Don'tCareThatNobodyCares

the official time of any place I frequent is whatever timezone I'm in

@CodesInChaos nor did I. It's been running for years thhough.

2:42 PM
@Iszi #iDon'tCareThatYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDo‌n'tCareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCare‌ThatYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDon'tCareThati‌Don'tCareThatYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDon't‌CareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCareTha‌tYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDon'tCareThatiDon'tCareThatYouDon'tCare

@kalina You don't reveal your timezone. Basic OPSEC ;)

exactly

@Iszi phhbt, when choosing a timezone for an international chat room, which makes more sense ... a generally recognized universal timezone, or the timezone for one small slice of a particular company?

thus the timezone of the DMZ is ambiguous
@RоryMcCune @Iszi basically what he just said is "there's only one of you and #nobodycares"
this is nowhere near as fun
where is Simon
at least Simon reacts

Do we need a timezone?

2:46 PM
@kalina hey he doesn't have to tell you where he is, it's not like your his mum.... oh... wait
huh see the bridge is getting flaggy

@RоryMcCune in doubt, mark as valid

pls, I always mark every flag as valid
@RоryMcCune Simon is older than me
pls l2biology

@kalina pls you're a blue pony avatar on an Internet chat room you could be any age from 3 - 103

pls it's unrealistic to believe I will live to 103
pls 3 year olds should not be sexually active

@kalina for all I know you already are 103
worlds oldest DJ

2:57 PM
well if I'm 103, rest assured I'll be out of your way forever soon

@kalina and if you're 3 your rather likely to outlive me

you're*

@kalina good grammar for a 3 year old

bored now
this conversation is boring
#bored

@kalina sorry you'll need to wait for @Simon 's presence for more scintillating conversation

3:04 PM
meh
might just go and sleep for a bit

Emails... why are they so inefficient.

@RоryMcCune need to think about that (and re-read some of it, probably)
@M'vy inefficient how? zmail worked perfectly - you sent text. It was delivered. The other party would write text that would get delivered back. Perfect

@RoryAlsop all we need to do is Kill.All.HTML.Email :)

@RоryMcCune that and rtf email :-)
text - much more secure
and fast
and unbloaty

@RоryMcCune We could use Earth Standard Time.

3:13 PM
@RoryAlsop that too

@RoryAlsop inefficient as your inbox is always a mess no matter what you do to make it otherwise

@RoryAlsop How is that a competition? Sounds like "agree receive spam in exchange for a lottery ticket"

@M'vy no - you just refuse any html email.

@RoryAlsop yeah, well...

3:17 PM
@CodesInChaos I've not been spammed badly - I get one email a month from them
and about half the time it's something I'm interested in

@RoryAlsop Relying on pure luck doesn't fit my understanding of competing.

Furthermore I like what they did with GMail and filters, but it's so complicated to add&update. I like the automatic classification in inbox, but the concept is not pushed enough

@M'vy I don't like inbox...but yeah, gmail takes time to improve filters
@CodesInChaos agreed - more like a raffle or lottery

@RoryAlsop I want gmail filters with smart configuration like inbox

@M'vy my inbox isn't a mess
it's highly categorized, color coded, with folders in folders in folders in folders

3:23 PM
@kalina Yeah I do that too. But it's so complicated to add a stupid email in the list for a filter
Well complicated is not the word...
Annoying

the only rule you need is mv * /dev/null

Menu > Settings > Filter tab > Edit > add the email > (Search) > Continue > Tick apply to all > Update filter.
8 stupid actions for adding Amazon to the "updates" category

@RоryMcCune Not quite "universal" despite the name. We'd mostly use BDT en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barycentric_Dynamical_Time for "truly universal purposes" :P UTC, funny as it is, is only good enough as "terrestrial time" (just barely)

> Barycentric Dynamical Time (TDB) is a relativistic coordinate time scale, intended for astronomical use as a time standard to take account of time dilation[1] when calculating orbits and astronomical ephemerides of planets, asteroids, comets and interplanetary spacecraft in the Solar System.
> TDB is now (since 2006) defined as a linear scaling of Barycentric Coordinate Time (TCB), and a feature that distinguishes TDB from TCB is that TDB, when observed from the Earth's surface, has a difference from Terrestrial Time (TT) that is about as small as can be practically arranged with consistent definition: the differences are mainly periodic,[2] and overall will remain at less than 2 milliseconds for several millennia.[3]

well yes but it wasn't me going full nurd first :P

3:29 PM
pls so much nerd my brain hertz

@TildalWave tell ya what then when we get our first DMZ login from space, we can move to BDT :)

@RоryMcCune How do you know it hasn't happened yet?
@RoryAlsop this paragraph can be a bit misleading if not read exactly as written
it's essentially saying that "when observing Earth time from the Earth, there isn't any time dilation to account for"... obviously
TL;DR if you're gonna time your burns by UTC, you're gonna miss the planet! :P

@TildalWave true true, anyone of you random Internet Avatars could be on the ISS or indeed be an alien!

Even on earth clocks desynchronize when they're at different heights.

not just clocks :))
and also depths ... the deepest end of the Earth's gravity well is on its surface (more or less, there are also mascons, the flattening coefficient of the oblate spheroid, and a couple of other complete and utter nurd thingies)

1 hour later…
4:41 PM
@RоryMcCune good thing I arrived on time tobpick my little brother up, because I was nearly to late. And it's your fault.
I'm at chapter 130 out of 150 or something.

@Arperum holy smeg, quickest FreakAngels read through evar :op
