morning

1 hour later…
7:14 AM

7:38 AM
^ have xkcd been following my PC build tribulations...

@kalina fight robot reviewers. With robot-created tests.

8:06 AM
@Arperum - I read that as "kalina fights robot"

8:17 AM
Morning all

Morning! puts the kettle on

@RoryAlsop There is that too. Kalina just beat the robot that is used to fight other robots, but got confused and tried fighting a human instead.

8:34 AM
mmm I think there was an issue with throttling the requests when scraping the dmz
so that's fixed

@Arperum: best part is? I can actually tell most review audits by sight now
@AviD: Shit like that is why I do test 'failures' of my main hard disks...
I can get my main desktop up in an hour if its just a system disk failure. Little longer for my other boxen since they need to pull in the backups from my nas

8:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yea, if you suddenly get a post from years ago in your queue, that is kind of a given.

On the contrary
if its from two hours ago its probably a review audit

what if Germany actually won World War 2 and we're living in an alternate timeline in which the fractured remains of the ally power time travelled and convinced Hitler to invade Russia

@kalina Good Morning Kalina, see you've started the week well :op

9:14 AM
sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast

@kalina I like that movie.

11h23... internet finally going live again... DMZ powering up... Loading accurate diurnal isomorphism... Good Morning !!

I didn't realize the Internet had gone offline

@kalina corporate internet thing... you know. Have to call IT, IT has to call other IT, other IT has to call ISP customer service, ISP call tech...

I'm not familiar with corporate internet things

1 hour later…
10:38 AM
Hey everybody .
I am looking for a ECDH libary for 16 - bit controllers . Can anybody recommend one ? :-) Thanks in Advance and all the best

Q: Types of Cryptography for a 4-8 bit microcontroller

JimThis is more of a research question. I was wondering what types of crypto algorithms would work best on a small 4-8 bit micro controller. I recently read a paper called Security Considerations for 802.15.4 Networks and was wondering if anyone out there can think of any other papers or has knowl...

10:53 AM
apparently when kalina isn't chatting, chat is inactive

@BlueBerry-Vignesh4303 didn't find much usefull information in that thread . Anyway I appreciate your suggestion

I'm looking for elliptic Curve [ECC] implementations and not asymmetric cryptography in general
preferably in C
elliptic curve Diffie Hellman key-exchange software for 16 Bit uC

11:10 AM
Might not be super fast, but the Ref10 and the TweetNaCl versions of Curve25519 should work on pretty much any platform.

@SebastianNagel mbedtls is pretty small but not sure if it's small enough for 16bit microcontrollers.

I think Peter Schwabe has some newer works on implementing Curve25519 on lower end devices.

@kalina see what you've done... now they're talking about crypto!

Thanks a lot for the responses :-)
I'll take a look at those for sure the next hours !

11:24 AM
@RоryMcCune Fine. Let's start an on topic conversation. Ruby sucks.

@TerryChia now where was my "Wrong" GIF

Morning you DMZ sunshines.

@Simon watcha' @Simon was your weekend good?

@RоryMcCune Yep it was super legit, yours?

@Simon yarr was good, got some nice weather on Sunday for a walk up a hill

11:37 AM
@RоryMcCune That's the picture you've tweeted, right?

@Simon yeah that was the shot from the top at the trig point

Nice.

@RоryMcCune sorry, too busy to join in atm

@kalina why am I guessing that if crypto is the topic of conversation, you're always too busy to join in...

MRW when I remember that I destroyed my Techno playlist in an attempt to repair it yesterday: :(
Silly Google Play Music doesn't sync properly with iTunes playlists.

A: Does the Mebromi BIOS flashing rootkit mean APTs for personal computers are here?

Bobby Nikkhah That said, bios and firmware attacks have been around for a while. The only change here is > the same one any class of attacks goes through: they have become commoditised. This doesn't change the approach of find, patch etc., but it does mean that a c>ompromised machine may require cle...

I can't decide if that actually answers the question or not.

@RoraΖ Sorry, that triggered a Monday Morning Wall of Text Overflow on me, can't help ya out.

@Simon haha, don't think about that for more than 3 seconds or you'll get an aneurysm

12:16 PM
I'm too old to die :(

Hi all
I have today job in internet cafe
they asked me to secure their windows 7 desktops
so I run windows update and installed free panda security

Did you guys see this one (haven't checked transcript yet)

@RoryAlsop haha
"When did you stop trying?"

"What was the name of your favorite unpaid internship?"
pls, they were all well paid.
"What is your ex-wife’s newest last name?"
Brutal.

12:32 PM
@RоryMcCune well, good point but not the one I was making

@kalina was the point you were making that you were super busy with new "duff duff duff"s?

12:54 PM
Mmmm Duff </homer>

1:09 PM
@RoryAlsop huh that connection had not occurred to me. So I've basically been suggesting that @kalina writes dwarvish drinking songs.... "beer beer beer"

Are there any active mods? I'd like to edit some old posts which have grammar mistakes as well some things needs clarification...

You can always edit old posts - it'll just go into review if you don't have the rep.

wat
Oh, the annoying one is back.

@AndrewSmith You should edit the posts then, and they will be queued for approval.

@JourneymanGeek He's banned. For 10 years or so.

1:23 PM
^

Well that poses a problem

@AndrewSmith You seem to be missing the point here: you've been banned from the site which means that mods judged that your presence is not welcomed here.
Therefore, I'm sure that they don't have a minute to waste with your edits.

For roughly 10 years

And quite frankly I have no idea why you're still allowed to come in here.
And why you even bother to do so.

1:38 PM
@Simon trolls gotta troll

@AndrewSmith I hope you edit in better grammar than displayed here

@kalina: stop your comments from now on please which are degrading

@Simon: please stop degrading and unhelpful comments from now on

@AndrewSmith yeah, well, you know, that's just like... uh... your opinion...
@AndrewSmith my comments are factual and I've been nothing but nice to you the entire time you and I have been here together

1:51 PM
@AndrewSmith please go away from now on

@AndrewSmith did you get a reason why you are banned?

@LucasKauffman I would imagine with the number of bans involved, he's had several
@LucasKauffman thanks for that, I now have Bohemian rhapsody going round my head

@RоryMcCune really? What did he do?

@RоryMcCune Counter it with this

@LucasKauffman no idea guv, I just know that bans are escalating (i.e. the first one you get isn't 10 years), so there will have been multiple cases where an explanation would have been provided
@Arperum that feels like it's going to be a rick roll
so I think I'll decline to click it

2:01 PM
@RоryMcCune It is not.
@RоryMcCune You can always get the videotitle by dragging the link into the reply box here and posting that. That'll onebox it.

@Arperum ah and it's not, in fact I can safely say that's a long way from a rick roll

@RоryMcCune Yes, it's a pretty awesome song.

@RоryMcCune He's genuinely the worst troll I've ever seen.
@RoryAlsop What's the rule on suspended users creating a new account?
At this point I am almost certain that @AndrewSmith is @Begueradj.

@Simon It tends to cause longer bans.

@Arperum Then I feel like someone at SE should investigate him.

2:07 PM
@Simon @Begueradj exists for some time already though, I recognize the name.

@Arperum And suddenly when the other idiot gets banned, this one becomes much more active?

@Simon is he even a troll, though? If he's actually a troll he's the most harmless troll I've ever encountered

They both have a very similar grammar, come from the same location according to their profile.
And then of course he asked this question: meta.security.stackexchange.com/questions/1908/…
And made sure to mention how he clicked on the other guy's profile.
@kalina You're right, I think he's just a dumbass.

I think you're a better troll than he is

Thank you.

2:12 PM
@Simon I'm not saying you are wrong, just adding the datapoint that the other account exists for quite some time already.

You're very welcome

@RоryMcCune Officially bans only go up to 1 year.

@Simon You might be right, you might be wrong, but I don't think it'll hurt if @rory or some other mod has a look at it.

@Arperum Yep, it could just be a bunch of coincidence but I definitely think that's it's worth looking into it too.

@Simon nah I don't even ignore the latter

2:23 PM
@TildalWave Haha.

user122738
@Simon Hello. Why do you accuse me of being a troll? I can understand you typed my name here and found may be 2 or 3 profiles having the same name Begueradj. All of them mine. I use only this one because I do not remember the credentials I used for others, not even the emails I used for them. Once I contacted the moderators to merge two of my accounts but I never received an answer.

Yeah, pinging you was a damn mistake, I'm not gonna read any of this.

@Begueradj oh hey do you like chocolate?

user122738
No, I am old for chocolate. I prefer les lardons fumés

pls think of the animals
eating all of those cute faces
anyway now that I've distracted you away from your initial mini rage at Simon

user122738
2:34 PM
@kalina Our ancestors the apes became humans thanks to eating animal proteins.

@Begueradj Too old for chocolate does not exist.

user122738
@kalina Hope I am not impolite, but I wonder if you are a man or a woman? Your username and picture profile sound female, that is why I ask

Creep alert.

user122738
@Arperum May be you are right. I never liked it anyway.

@Begueradj your ancestors, I'm not human
@Begueradj as a non-human, my gender is irrelevant to this discussion
and the reason I choose to not eat meat is because I am above humanity on the food chain and it's in everybody's best interests

user122738
2:37 PM
I always thought a user called Deer Hunter is the funniest person of all times on SE, but now I think you compete him :) @kalina

..................
I almost puked.

oh, there's no need to laugh at me :(

@kalina Gender is irrelevant to this discussion either way. The point where gender start being relevant is the point when you are deciding to do something that requires gender specific bodyparts.

Also on the Internet everything can just be a professed identity, doesn't actually need to relate to a real one :)
For example as we know @kalina is actually a 45 year old trucker from Des Moines Iowa, who just like to represent as a DJ type person
and @Simon is actually 12 but likes to pretend he's a PHP dev.

I am 12 and I am a PHP dev.

2:45 PM
and @RoryAlsop predates the big bang.

user122738
I noticed most of the members using this room are from UK.

@Simon I thought that went without saying - the choice of language implied the age?

@Iszi That's usually true.

@Iszi well you'd know, you're his dad

@Begueradj You checked them all? AFAIK there are only a couple UK people in here.

2:46 PM
@Begueradj Really, most? I find that claim dubious. Certainly there's a significant portion from the U.K., but there's also a substantial portion from the U.S., a couple Canadians, and several from other regions. A fairly diverse group.

user122738
@Arperum Yes, some moderators, Kalina, Simon ... and lot of others, except you and me

@Simon you hear that, you're an honorary brit now!

@Begueradj There are some on your list that are wrong.

@Iszi I'm not even sure it's a significant portion

@Simon you realise that means you need to start liking............. Roundellos!

2:48 PM
@Begueradj basically everybody in that list is wrong
stop being so wrong, you're hurting me

@RоryMcCune At least now all this time I've spent practicing my "oi lads" will be useful.

@kalina You're calling the Rorys insignificant? Careful, now. One of 'em has one of those shiny blue diamond thingies.

@RоryMcCune pls

user122738
well ... you want to get me paranoid :)

@Iszi like that matters at all

2:49 PM
Oh he's paranoid? That reminds me someone else.

@Begueradj well no, actually, there isn't what us making you paranoid looks like
this is merely us correcting all the things you got wrong
like Microsoft being the public relations division of the NSA, for example

user122738
us and me .... scary vocabulary :)

and Linux being suitable for the average end user

@kalina that was a funny one

user122738
I thought you do not use the axe here :) @kalina

2:51 PM
and for the record, cryptography is exactly like penis size, it's not only the size that matters but how you use it

So, I just had a browse around the current room members. Of those who claim any locale in their profile, the largest majority (though still less than half of all) is indeed from the U.K.. The next-most represented country appears to be the U.S., and then there's a wide mix after.

are you including Canada in US like you include Scotland in UK?

Who specifies local in the their profile?
Terrible opsec

@kalina Bahaha.

@kalina pls

2:52 PM
@RoraΖ I kept mine as narrow as I was willing

@kalina Not including Canada in the U.S., but Scotland is part of the U.K..

user122738
@kalina you often talk about such things ... perv :)

not according to the British or the Scottish

@Iszi Technically Canada should be part of the UK, since they also hail the Queen

2:53 PM
@Begueradj if something can't be explained with a good penis euphemism then it's not worth explaining
2

@RoraΖ Better than hailing da gunz.

@RoraΖ No, they fall into one of the more wibbly-wobbly categories.

ALL HAIL DA GUNZ

user122738
:D

@Simon Better than hailing moose

2:54 PM
guys I have been here for an hour and have 50% of the star list

@RoraΖ Nah, da meese are da shit.

@Simon The mice?

I'm going afk now so you have time for normality to restore

I can't understand you with your head flapping about like that.

@RoraΖ No, the fake plural word for moose.
@RoraΖ Shush you SP nub.

2:55 PM
pls it wasn't a single player reference

@kalina Who even plays single player anymore?

I do :(

@Iszi's mom does too.

@Simon Your mom constantly plays multiplayer

I have stepped in that one.

2:59 PM
single player results in more effort but always getting what you want
whereas multiplayer you can just kinda relax and let the other player do everything

And then BOOM HEADSHOT

@kalina Unless "what you want" is "oral". And you're not a dog.
@RoraΖ Ew.

:p~

Good remove.

inb4 stars, amirite

3:05 PM
Lame I didn't see it, and apparently I was referenced

@RоryMcCune well you do share the same queen

@RoraΖ She said something about swallowing your headshot.

oszi pls

at least we scared off the lions and the crocodiles

But... the bears still lurk

3:06 PM
@Iszi wow stop making stuff up that's so dirty
I'd never say that

Especially the @TomLeek one, he's the worst.

how embarrassing

@Simon Whatchu talkin' 'bout? He never shows up in here.

2 days ago, by Tom Leek
@TildalWave WHAT IS WRONG WITH LEEK ?

@RoraΖ Okay, to be fair, she didn't specifically say she wanted to swallow your headshot. Just that they tend to get swallowed in general.

@TildalWave Okay. Nearly never.

Old timey @Lucas

that looks like Bro-adway

@Iszi pls, statistically like half of the women in the world swallow
probably
it's hardly an opsec failure

@kalina Really? I wonder how that research was conducted? Any practical tests to verify? Where do I sign up?

3:17 PM
@Iszi I FIND YOUR LACK OF FAITH... DISTURBING.

As she often says: that was quick.
3

@TomLeek Please. I always have faith in you. It's the rest of these bozos I disbelieve.

@Simon "really? I didn't even realize you were in!"

@kalina How to destroy a man.

had plenty of practice at that

3:19 PM
@Simon No, that's the moment you just call her a slut for being so loose.

"you finish off, I'm going to sleep"
"this is boring now"
or...
"oh yeah, I didn't get milk"
@Iszi pls, use the size doesn't matter argument all you want, you wouldn't travel to Hawaii on a row boat.

jrg
Somebody did.

and my condolences to that individual

@kalina Hey, if the row boat has a rocket strapped to it, the trip could still be fun!

@Iszi like the boat would survive that

3:22 PM
A little something called "thrust-to-weight ratio" factors in, there.

your argument is fine but you're ignoring displacement.
which is pretty fundamental in this particular context
the word displacement doesn't mean what I thought it meant according to Google

user122738
@Simon I just read fully your previous comments. You even called me an idiot. I think you can not allow yourself to call any member of SE with such names.

and thus I'm going to withdraw from this discussion and go and find the word I actually meant to use, expect me to randomly blurt out a random multisyllable word later with no context

@Begueradj What happened in your life to become such an annoying individual?

@Begueradj it's not condescending or name calling, he's well aware of the word idiot as he is one

3:32 PM
@kalina Actually someone made the rowboat trip from Japan to Washington state, but he has an excuse: he is French.
Frenchmen are les champions de l'inutile.
Nowadays he went into politics, which is also a matter of tedious rowing through dubious waters. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%A9rard_d%27Aboville)

lulz
You poetic bastard.

On a completely unrelated topic: I just recently realized how ridiculously huge space is, and how inadequate sci-fi is at relating starship speed to real-world dimensions. For example: To travel from Sol to Proxima Centauri in less than one Earth day would require speeds well in excess of 1,000c! I can't think of any sci-fi work that has mentioned their ships going that fast!
Wanna get to our nearest stellar neighbor in under 5 minutes? You'll be going over 500,000 times the speed of light!

@Iszi WARP DRIVE ALL THE THINGS!
actually Elite:dangerous gives you a good sense of size of space
people with warp drives have spent ages trying to get to the centre of the galaxy
it takes quite a while

@Iszi pls, time is relative in media
just because they instantly cut from one scene where they're setting off to another where they're arriving doesn't mean there wasn't a month between them

@RоryMcCune Yeah, that's the only one so far that seems to get close. And when you engage hyperdrive, your speed randomly fluctuates between four-digit factors of c. (Though anything within that range is still far from sufficient to accommodate the simulated travel duration.)

3:41 PM
also everybody knows that it's all about the hyperspace window generator and literally folding space.

Ok back home. where the internet actually works

@kalina And very mutable, apparently. According to Wikipedia, the formula for warp factor velocity is v=c*(w^(10/3)). That means a trip to Proxima Centauri (4.24 ly from Sol) should take around a day at Warp 9. But, at the same time, a trip to Qo'noS (somewhere less than 90 ly from Sol) supposedly takes only 4 days at Warp 4.5.

@Iszi Nice formula, do they make it for men?

@Simon "fast"

Warp factor

3:49 PM
I like this ship as it allows you to turn up warp factor to 11
waits for a nerd interjection

I like this room, as it tends to turn the euphemism factor up to 11.

And nurd factor up to 11 too.

I'm disappointed that none of you nerds jumped in to attack one of the only pieces of nerd I actually know
and I'm certainly not going to tell you as I'm suddenly feeling slightly self concious about the whole thing

@tylerl Sounds like someone didn't chat up the right person in HR.

4:09 PM
Star trek is rather inconsistent about warp factor. But I think in TNG warp 10 is infinite speed.
Happy now?

jrg
And in Voyager, you roll back evolution while retaining language.

@CodesInChaos en.memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Warp_factor it is but also inconsistently there were several instances of higher warp factors

@RоryMcCune It's mildly amusing how TOS recorded objects going higher than warp 30, but later generations decided that 10 would be the "infinite speed" factor.
I guess they wanted to make it so that "infinite speed" seemed like something just barely out of reach.
@jrg Roll back? I thought it was hyper-accelerated?

jrg
@Iszi IDK. Didn't they turn into frogs?

@jrg Some sort of thing like that. Depending on the fiction though, that could go either way.

4:50 PM
my mouse is sticky
also look at me starting a Star Trek conversation

sure
why not

y nut

y nt
y
?

Note to self never touch @kalina's keyboard or mouse...

4:58 PM
conveniently skipping the other 372 steps it would take to be in that situation
