So, it turns out it was my monitor. Went and got a new one, tried swapping in the VGA cable that came with the new one first and no luck.

Good news is, the mouse just needed its terminals cleaned - no new batteries required.

@Adnan - have you seen the band Ghost (think they are Swedish) anyway, they play a cross between pop and doom metal. Saw them last year at download festival and just saw them tonight at the house of blues in las Vegas. Absolutely awesome!
