A: Can a lock picker slowly undermine the security of a deadbolt door?

tylerlYes, there's a classic attack that involves incremental access. The attacker starts out with a blank key and a lighter (or candle, or similar). Before visiting the door, he uses the lighter to put a thin layer of soot on the top edge of the blank key. The attacker approaches the door, puts the ...

Im surprised this wasn't mentioned
I'm not even that great at lock picking, and I've heard of it (granted, I heard about it from an expert, but still...)

@schroeder easy. You answer direct questions factually and accurately with the minimum amount of information possible and never volunteer information :)

8:45 AM
@RоryMcCune And be prepared to challenge statements they make, if factually incorrect = otherwise they will end up in their report

@RoryAlsop I remember the first time I got an Internal audit when I was in security, naively thought they would help, ended up with a red report with actions I had to do that I'd told them about!
never made that mistake again.

@RоryMcCune I'm trying to educate our IA team
so they know that if I have already described a problem they will get no points for re-stating it

@RoryAlsop I think when I used to deal with them, they were getting rated based on the number of red reports issued, which is not a good metric if they want people to work with them..

@RоryMcCune yep - sounds about right

9:08 AM
walks in with coffee for all

@BarryCarlyon your coffee evidently brings all the @kalina 's to the yard

I do not have a problem with this!

I totally clicked the wrong bookmark and ended up here by accident

Thats what they all say…
Then they lock the door behind you.

also: latte with toffee sauce

9:10 AM
And you have to stay!
I have one of those hands it over

I have one also!

I suppose really I should actually go fetch some coffee. Sat down and ate the bacon that was on my desk first…

this is my just before bed coffee
so
during my extensive drone research
I've concluded that the thing I want is actually a hexacopter

@kalina I've not looked at those.. which ones are good?

oh no, it would probably be a kit
the problem is theres a lot of whining about their use
since they can lift enough payload to be useful

I want to fly further than that

@kalina there's a fair bit of whining about drone use in general, especially now they carry 4k cameras

'g Morning

@kalina my phantom will do ~12 on a charge with a standard battery

9:16 AM
@Lighty tips hat

@RоryMcCune it's not enough
30 minutes I'll accept
which means either waiting until battery technology catches up, which surely must be any time soon with all the smartphones in the world
or getting a better drone

@kalina ahh phantom 2 will get you 25 mins
but unfortunately the new inspire 1 is only 18 mins

Should make the whole drone body a battery and just bolt rotors to it
with gaffer for good measure.
Fluff the alignment

I have like a full season of big bang theory, ncis, ncis la, a new ncis series and a season of castle to watch
I have officially been out of the system for an entire TV series cycle
it's like detoxing but costs more in taxes

I'm dissapointed at the fact the UK is a few weeks behind the US Shield schedule. Unlike Season1

9:22 AM
you're connected to the internet, your complaint is fundamentally flawed

No argument there. My usual place is offline.

is that by choice?

Indeed. I've not sourced a suitable replacement.

does anybody have a Nexus 9?

I'm still iOS based.

people still do that to themselves?

I don't call or text anyone.
It's just a notification receiver.

9:27 AM
I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse

I'd go back to a Nokia3310 if I could

through extensive study I've come to a conclusion
as quick as I removed all of the actual problems from my life they've been replaced with first world problems

That in itself is a first world problem

it is
recursive first world problems

9:32 AM
such is life

dat music for such a laptop

This probably causes the need for much beverage resulting in more first world problems

@Lighty you're rating the sound from a laptop as recorded on a youtube video?
@BarryCarlyon I don't drink

Who said it had to be alcohol?

well the only first world problems you'd get by drinking water is if you drowned yourself in it
and then it's no longer a first world problem, as you ceased to exist

9:34 AM
Hmm, true.

@kalina No, I meant the music that's playing in the video, I know that laptop actually has really good sound.... because I spend €1200 on getting a Customized model
talking about that, it should be done around today somewhere, should call the shop in a few minutes for a status update

I find it interesting how so many people are borrowing bits of apple design

I don't
it's much easier to lift somebody else's design
ask Apple
@Lighty I'm guessing you have an actual use case for a laptop?

Indeed.

9:58 AM
I'm far too tired to deal with this much activity
I'm going to sleep

My arm seems to have fallen off.
I was aiming for o/ but missed

I have an overwhelming desire to buy stuff
it's like a compulsive shopping disorder

Generally I understand the female of the species likes to purchase goods

yes but this is far worse than normal

Well it is sales time…

10:56 AM
which only makes it worse
not only do I have the little voice saying "oooh that's nice"
and the little voice saying "go on, you know you want to"
but there's also the little voice saying "look, it's all on sale!"

and no I didn't buy them, because being able to afford something doesn't make it a good descision

@RоryMcCune Then don't use the stupid things?

@Arperum but that was the whole joke :op

@BarryCarlyon No cruise control for you then.

I was sticky shift key anyway…

@RоryMcCune Explaining jokes makes them terrible. I just made you ruin your joke.

@RоryMcCune heh

@Arperum yes yes you did, I hope you feel duly ashamed..

@RоryMcCune I actually feel good about it. I achieved my goal! yay!

11:06 AM
obviously a highly motivated individual setting realistically attainable goals
I have basically achieved most of my life goals this year
I concluded that I didn't aim high enough, so I have a book full of truly unattainable goals
like "first woman to walk on the moon"
and if I achieve just one of these, I will call my existence a major success
incidentally, my very presence here is against next year's new year's resolution
which will be "do not resort to the internet or gaming as a temporary relief from boredom"

What else do you resort instead?

well ideally, something productive
procrastination is bad
and now I'm going to be awfully ironic about it all by continuing to procrastinate
is the movie "Interstellar" any good?

Apparently. I've not seen it

oh
Is it better than Gravity?

Definetly. Tho I did enjoy Gravity from a story perspective.

11:15 AM
really?

Well the art/themes stuff. Maybe not the story.
I lack the right English right now

I'm too tired to be pedantic

@BarryCarlyon Which part? That in orbit, fond memories of George Clooney can safely land you on some rice field in the middle of China?

But no.

@TildalWave Wait, it can't?

I guess the only solution is more coffee

11:29 AM
once upon a time, I never consumed coffee
and now I don't function without it
it feels like a step back

I alternate a lot between tea and coffee
Sometimes fruit juice but that doesn't feel as rewarding as making a pot of tea of a cup of coffee
I obviously have a desire for spoon(ing)

spooning leads to forking

Better than knifing I suppose…

this conversation could continue but from memory we're possibly already at the line

Agreed

11:35 AM
My coffee habits are weird. I never drink coffee. But I like eating coffee flavoured ice and chocolate and even whole coffee beans encased in chocolate.

@LucasKauffman Looks familiar. Pretty sure someone did.

@kalina till?

@RоryMcCune I have things that I have to do
this void between now and then seems like an insurmountable vacuum
of NOTHING
+oxymoron
what I'm trying to say is, I'm bored
I wonder if I could hire a team of people to keep me unbored
I expect that's a situation that would be a bit of a double edge sword
how can I have a team of people to unbore me while simultaneously having my own space

@Kalina learn sword fighting, or possibly the use of the haldberd or pike. You'll not get be bored, and people will remain a sufficient distance from you?

1:22 PM
They could unbore you thorugh the internet? be available on demand?

UnboredomOnDemand

@kalina Do you feel "skin inflammation and peeling, irritability, tremors, convulsions, weakness, headaches, depression, diarrhea, vomiting, and other symptoms" ?

@ThomasPornin not anytime recently
I did get quite a bit of peeling on my shoulders over summer but I suspect differing root causes

These are signs of poisoning from too much boron.

oic
I don't believe I have boron poisoning

1:24 PM
Oh.
So you are not "bored" in that sense.
That's fine. Carry on.

no. neither do I have holes drilled in me

Careful with the heavy-duty euphemisms; this is the DMZ.

I don't need to be careful with euphemisms
I will just feign innocence and naivety
nooo... kalina would never make such a statement, obviously she was talking about boredom (noun): emotional state experienced when an individual is left without anything in particular to do, and not interested in their surroundings
certainly not calculating the average radius of ...
or talking about drilling
definitely would never happen

Hey @raz, my gf received her OnePlus One yesterday.
Just thought I'd let you know.
Hi @kalina

evening
well that was a brief but pleasant conversation

1:40 PM
I wouldn't want to deceive you.
It feels great to switch from Galaxy S2 to Nexus 5.

5?
why not 6?

I don't feel the need to get the brand new shizzles.
Because it was my gf's.
I didn't buy it at the store.

the second answer is better

True, hehe.

saying that, I'm currently considering buying loads of different things and can't really conclude if there would be any benefit from doing so
like, I want a new phone, but the reason I want a new phone is because I'm bored with my current phone

1:44 PM
Probably not.
You'll end up being bored with the new one in a few too.

and I want a new tablet but the reason I want a new tablet is because I'm bored with my old one
I mean, it's got a slightly dodgy screen at times
and it is only 7"
what girl isn't going to want to upgrade from 7" to 9"
5
but it still fulfills my requirements
and I was looking at shoes

I feel like 9" doesn't necessarily means good times.

but really... they're just shoes, I already have shoes
@Simon I duno, I heard the screen on the nexus 9 is responsive and bright and the device is fast and my primary use for the device is watching movies on planes
planes/boats/car journeys when I'm not driving
and then there's my car, which has nothing wrong with it except I'm bored of the colour
I don't even need a new pc
so then I start looking at things like drones
and I'm like well, I don't want an expensive one because the first thing I'm going to do is crash it into the ground
but I don't want a cheap one because I want features X Y Z
so that I can use it for a few hours and then never use it again

@kalina get a nice little starter one just to practice with

#FirstWorldProblems

1:48 PM
at < £100 you won't feel to bad when you crash
then get an inspire one and get into the paparazzi game

I think for the duration of December, every time I say/think/feel bored I am going to donate €5 to charity

@kalina that'll cost you

@RоryMcCune no more than any of the other first world problems mentioned above

@kalina true true
in totally unrelated news I now have a depressing comedy song stuck in my head. that'll teach me to watch burnistoun episodes at lunchtime!

@kalina You need to find joy in something that won't end up ruining your wallet.

@Simon you're about to suggest squirrels aren't you

@RоryMcCune Damn it, now I just can't do it.
HEY WHAT'S THAT LOW BLOW EDIT?

@Simon you're golden I changed it :op

Oh, fine.
Thanks!
@kalina Have you ever thought joining the donut industry?
Facebook refreshes faster now. I thought it was slow on my older phone because of poor internet connection but nooo, it actually was the hardware that had a hard time.
Maaaaannnn.

2:02 PM
@Simon I'm not a huge fan of donuts
@Simon I do, it's the time between doing what I love doing that is the problem
it's all my fault, I've purposely wound everything down so I could chill out over most of the Christmas period

I guess not everyone can love donuts.

I have no prejudice against those who do love donuts

I think my Christmas will involve a lot of driving.

I think my Christmas will involve a lot of sleeping
but then the build up to new year starts
so I will still be, on average, sleep deprived
right, let's do one final attempt at getting some zees

2:20 PM

Something very weird happened.
While I was gone, @Simon was being damn funny.

@Iszi Salt questions about be going crazy lately. My number 1 answer is now a salt question from a month ago.

@Xander @kalina Had the Nexus 7 for 2 years. Moved to a iPad mini earlier this year, prefer that now. The aspect ratio is better.
Don't like the full size iPads or the Nexus 9s that I've seen.
