@RoryAlsop linky?

@tylerl This is not github but you might be able to get it through this: engadget.com/2014/10/01/windows-10-9-naming-rumor
Too lazy to go through the links

LOL:
literally thousands of hits

3 hours later…
3:49 AM
@Simon I'm going to say likely to be true since I know someone who claims he's used that code more times than he would care to admit.

4:00 AM

3 hours later…
7:07 AM
Moved one of my services from Softlayer to Google Compute. Hosting cost for the exact same server configuration drops to 1/10th of what I paid last month. Altogether a positive experience.

@tylerl almost all of which are false positives. Didn't anybody who saw this scroll down to the bottom of the first page?

@tylerl Cmon, stop advertising your employer's services. ;)

@TerryChia FWIW, I pay the same rate as everyone else. No discounts.

Is Google Compute a IaaS or a PaaS?

7:10 AM
@TerryChia They have both. Compute is like EC2. In fact, amazon dropped their prices to match google's when it came out.
But App Engine is PaaS

@tylerl App Engine is the PaaS right? While Compute is the EC2 like one?
@tylerl Yeah. Hmm, I should take a look at Compute's pricing.

It's crazy cool. You upload your code, and they'll scale it all the way up to millions of servers if that's what it takes.
So it's perfect for stuff like running the back-end of a multiplayer game, or something. You only pay for the resources you use when you use them, but their design constraints make it so that the whole thing scales to absolutely massive capacity as needed.
So, if you weren't convinced that Google was the awesomest place to work: My team decided to spend last wednesday on the beach. The company provided busses for transportation and budget for food and stuff. And we all went to half moon bay for the whole day.
A "team building" thing or whatever.
What kind of company does that?
Anyway, I'm off to bed.

7:50 AM
@tylerl any reasonably decent one
we have things like that at my job a couple times a year normally
not saying google isn't a solid place to work, it is, but there are lots of other similarly good employers out there if you know to look for them and have the talent to get jobs from them
@tylerl almost cheap enough to make me think about moving off dedicated, but not quite
it saddens me that nobody has managed to beat dedicated hosting prices for predictable load on cloud stuff yet, but I guess it makes sense
since there is some overhead

@AJHenderson Why does that sadden you? I think it's pretty normal.

but if I was to try to replicate full uptime on my 3.1ghz quad core, 12gb server with 1tb of storage and unlimited transfer, the price is still about 2 to 3 times higher

The attractiveness of services like EC2 is the ability to scale resources up and down on demand.

@TerryChia it saddens me that nobody has started selling closer to the markup of dedicated hardware
I understand why
but it would be nice if you didn't have to pay a huge markup for the scaling
so that you actually could use it for predictable load as well

If you have a stable load throughout the year it's hard to beat a dedicated server or just buying a server and placing it in a colo.

7:59 AM
I mean, your load has to be pretty inpredictable for it to make sense at 2 to 3 times the cost on average

@AJHenderson Nah, it's not only about unpredictability.

@AJHenderson: and the fact that a lot of folk have no idea how to size capasity. With PAAS, its essentially someone elses problem.

Imagine tasks where you want to scale up to 100s of servers to run jobs in a certain timeframe then idle for the rest of the day/week.

@TerryChia hmm, that's fair

Also, Amazon spot instances are pretty ok in price.

8:01 AM
it still seems like it should be possible to run one closer to cost though
statistically, usage patterns should average out

Some people write sophisticated software to reserve them.

so it shouldn't cost substantially more on average to run a cloud process than a dedicated one in theory
but reality doesn't match up with that

@AJHenderson Can you back that up?

@TerryChia just statistical normalization
on average, as you increase the number of people using a system, the average load should balance out in general. Especially if you can globalize it

Also, cloud prices are in a race to the bottom at the moment, give it a year.

8:04 AM
at worst, you should end up with a situation where you can do market exchange rates based on demand and have it fairly average out

@AJHenderson You can get damn cheap cloud servers. Just look at DO. What providers like Amazon provides is more than a simple VPS.
You get access to the whole load balancing/replication/DNS stuff.

the only hard data I have though is what proprietary info I have from the cloud service provider I work for in terms or our server utilization we see when scaled up globally

Which is incredibly difficult for small companies to build.

interesting
BadUSB exploit causes USB apperatus to act as almost undetectable carrier and executer of malware

@Lighty yarr- it's a bit of a problem for organisations

@RoryAlsop ahwrrrrrrighty then

@Lighty it was always a risk, but what BadUSB does is make it easy for anyone to re-write USB firmware to do this

@RoryAlsop so is it easy as in, it would be a common virus after a while, or is it script-kiddie easy in a while? because im sure AV companies are already digging this with love

It is not a virus. BadUSB is a toolkit to rewrite firmware on any USB device that allows firmware rewriting
AV will not detect
the current USB handshake protocols are not built to cope - the PC asks "what are you" and potentially also asks "please give me the drivers I should use to communicate with you"
= game over

10:42 AM
@RoryAlsop isn't that the trick to get autorun working for CDs?
but with a pendrive
you make it think it's a CD and you can autorun all the thinggs

@LucasKauffman does anyone still use autorun. Pretty sure Windows has it disabled by default these days
(I say pretty sure. It is disabled on the windows box I have - I don't think I needed to do it)

autorun as a default of asking "oh, theres data on device, what should i do?"
but driver install goes auto
which i had trouble with yesterday, attempted to install my wireless logitech F710 controler's software

@RoryAlsop I think they initially used to disable it on pendrives but didn't disable it on CDs, might have changed

somehow, the logitech site doesnt work and gives me the wired F510's drivfers, and the drivers on the nano reciever dont work at all (even though they auto install and seem to work, in device manager)

TGIF to be honest

10:52 AM

11:05 AM
@LucasKauffman going to have lunch with Kieron today

raz
Good [insert time of day] everyone

@raz g'murnin dear sir

happy diurnal isomorphism

raz
It's like 7am, big words are hard

@raz then get a coffee or a Policeforce takeover to get you awake! D:

raz
11:19 AM
I know! If only

@Lighty a 'Policeforce takeover' - what is that?

@RoryAlsop no idea how to call it in english, but i meant, that the police burst in like crazy, like what happened at my complex yesterday

@Lighty a Raid

thats the word

raz
@RoryAlsop yep! i was sitting here thinking... what's that word people use when police break down doors...?

11:22 AM
@raz surely that has a much funnier answer:
"Shiiiiiiiiii......."

"hide yo weed!!!!11!!1111!!11!

raz
"Dude we hear you yelling it, why bother."

or in murica, they go pew pew pew pew, and people in the office go like "you shot mah coffee, bastard D:"

raz
"You killed Kenny!"

"Its jsut a flesh wound!"
2
i like you @raz, your kind of humour amuses me
and you didn't try to kill me yet, which is a real miracle

raz
11:31 AM
haha

11:46 AM
Using a quote in the item code is definitely modifying the behavior of the page posti.fi/itemtracking/posti/…
but it doesn't look like the quote is terminating the string

raz
@Adrian "mandatory information missing in search criteria"

@raz Just put a quote ' in the item code

raz
Yeah just realized that
Fun!

@raz But it doesn't seem like anything else is happening
I cannot get anywhere with it

raz
Yeah I'm not sure what that really implies

11:52 AM
@RoryAlsop he'll probably remember me as that annoying drunk Belgian guy I imagine xD

@LucasKauffman so an accurate recollection then :op

@RоryMcCune :P
I still have a picture of me and keiron on my colleagues phone apparently

12:11 PM
@Lighty Your spelling doesn't amuse me at all.

raz
@Simon just bought a simon says the other day, and Rock'em Sock'em Robots.

@raz Does it feel like childhood again?

BLAAAAH

raz
@Simon yes! Where assembly was required for toys.

12:27 PM
@RoryAlsop I hope I didn't annoy him too much though :P

12:43 PM
@raz Just like Legos, where all the fun was.

Shouldn't we tell @raz about the reply feature already?
Anybody wanna do the honours? @Simon, perhaps?

raz
@Adnan You mean like this?

@Adnan I appreciate the honour but it looks like he has figured it out by himself.

@Simon Yay!

raz
@Simon Not as dumb as I look folks

12:46 PM
@raz You don't look dumb

@raz It's fine, we're used to Lighty so anyone is a genius in comparison.

raz
@TerryChia A baby genius is still a genius

@Adnan dude he looks like an Adipose... ambulatory fat!

@raz Looks like you need a little help to actually look dumb, I can help if you like.
Whoa, I just remembered this. I had a dream about a feature on SE allowing you to accept 2 answers and both people would get 8 rep each.
da fuk
I'm a nerd.
2

@Simon :D

12:56 PM
@Simon So if I want more rep, I need to answer twice so that I get +16 instead of +15 ?

@ThomasPornin Yes, unless you have another way of splitting the number 15 in 2 fairly.

raz
We introduce half points

@raz 1 upvote on your comments: .1 rep

raz
I actually wouldn't mind having the ability to switch answers, where you lose rep by switching
As the OP

@Simon Seriously, each comment upvote should be 1 rep

raz
1:01 PM
@Adnan I would be ok with fractional rep for upvoted comments, 1 rep is quite a lot

@raz Is it ?

@raz Not at all

raz
Geez, if I had a rep for every REST API question that gets posted....

@Adnan Ya I think it'd be fair.
But the most upvoted comments usually are funny ones.
Should you reward someone for being funny on SE?

raz
@Simon That's why I think it should be fractional.

1:03 PM
@Simon Yeah, why not?
I mean, many times we see two answers with similar content but one is more funny, uses some tech references, and a bit witty
Usually the one that is more funny gets much more upvotes
The dude with the green pepper redaction question got a lot of upvotes for being funny (Sec.SE)

@Adnan True, if someone can help you and make you funny, that's definitely a plus.
@Adnan Haha, yeah.
@ThomasPornin "C'est avec des cennes qu'on fait des piastres"
(I hate that "saying")
It makes anyone sound greedy as fuck.

raz
I love Google Translate

2:08 PM
@Simon Whether this is morally good is debatable, but it already works that way.
Not only in SE, even.
Quick wit is the main fuel for any political career.

@ThomasPornin "Morally good"
Makes me chuckle

raz
@ThomasPornin Morals?! We don't need no stinkin' morals!

@Adnan I wouldn't chuckle in front of a bear.

@LucasKauffman .... hahahahahaha .... hahahahaa .... erm...yeah
actually what was funniest was he said you talked about me a bit, so I mentioned the security stack exchange meta page and the fact that it was just that rory meme. Scrolled down to the bottom - I'd forgotten you proposed the Rory Stack Exchange ;-P
@Simon that's Lego not Legos
8
Q: Do we use Lego, or Legos?

fredleyOn this site, which term do we use (or prefer to use) in questions and in tags? I'm inclined to the former, but then I'm British so that's the only way it could possibly be said.

> If the LEGO trademark is used at all, it should always be used as an adjective, not as a noun. For example, say "MODELS BUILT OF LEGO BRICKS". Never say "MODELS BUILT OF LEGOs".Also, the trademark should appear in the same typeface as the surrounding text and should not be isolated or set apart from the surrounding text. In other words, the trademarks should not be emphasized or highlighted. Finally, the LEGO trademark should always appear with a ® symbol each time it is used.

2:26 PM
@RoryAlsop You actually have two memes.

@TerryChia do I???

raz
@TerryChia Do explain

wut?

11
A: The Memes of Information Security

Terry ChiaMeme: @RoryAlsop's age. Originator: @RoryAlsop. He was here before any of us. Cultural Height: 1391 BCE Background: @RoryAlsop is one of the older guys that hangs out in The DMZ. Some of the younger guys started making fun of his age especially when he started reminiscing about the good old d...

hahahahahaha - oh yes
had forgotten about that (probably age related memory failure)
Hey - I'm sure half of those weren't there last time I read that post
you pesky kids

2:28 PM
@RoryAlsop Nah, they were all there. Look at the edit history.

@RoryAlsop Bleh, I'll keep saying legos anyway.

raz
@RoryAlsop Rory segfault hard

@RoryAlsop Would you ban me if I add HR manager to the list of memes? ;)

There's a LEGO SE site?!

@TerryChia . . . .
@Adnan of course there is
dude - seriously - where have you been?

2:30 PM
@RoryAlsop Jesus! Why?

@Adnan it's a thing
people like things
I nearly have 1k there :-) --- despite having only 1 question and 7 answers - wow

:D

@Adnan Because LEGO.

@TerryChia that's "because LEGO®"
Ahh - one of my favourite answers:
1
A: How can I make custom LEGO packaging?

Rory AlsopFor our lead singer's birthday, his sister created this lego kit which came in two boxes, one for the band, one for the...accessory. All in their own baggies. She printed the images onto normal paper, then glued these to thin cardboard boxes. They came out looking absolutely brilliant - feel ...

raz
@TerryChia Because everything is awesome!

2:33 PM
@RoryAlsop YOU HAVE YOUR OWN LEGO® FIGURES?!?!

because it contains this picture:
@TerryChia of course - dude, where have you been
(The thing I really want is 3D printed figures of us - but we missed the booking at the local craft/machine fair)

raz
@RoryAlsop Do custom bobble heads instead

@raz Whoever wrote the script for that movie was on something.

@raz we looked at that, but the cost isn't ideal

raz
@TerryChia On something awesome!

2:35 PM
Full 3D figurines work out the same price

raz
@RoryAlsop Seriously? About how much, because I've done the bobble head thing before.

raz
@RoryAlsop Wow that's worth it

oh - maybe £60 actually, reading some of the small print
Hey - brilliant: Edinburgh now has a permanent facility. Right - will see if I can get this done this weekend

raz
But they don't do it any more :(

2:39 PM
Yay!

raz
This is totally going to happen
Man the DMZ is changing life right now

@raz hehehe - you're in the Demilitarised Zone now ... dun dun DUNNNNN

@raz That's what the North Koreans said.

raz
@TerryChia hahaha
@TerryChia No more "that's what she said jokes". "That's what NKs said."

@RoryAlsop What would happen if you tried to do a 3D figurine of a vampire ?

2:50 PM
@ThomasPornin Depends - are your vampires mirror-invisible or camera-invisible? And if camera, is that film or digital?

@RoryAlsop If hooked to a 3D printer, then I guess a digital camera.
This is in fact the kind of experiment needed to actually understand scientifically the phenomena related to vampires.

raz
@RoryAlsop I thought you were so old that you were the first vampire...
Shouldn't you know these things?

When a vampire fails to appear on a photo, what really happens ? The photons don't reach the sensor/film ? The relevant reaction fails to happen ? Or the image is really there, but the observer's brain filters it out ?
Or, said otherwise: when you take a photo of a vampire, and show the apparently blank result to a cat, does the cat see the vampire ?

raz
@ThomasPornin I think their photons are different than our photons, and our cameras can process it.

@RoryAlsop Maybe it's the sparkly type?
@raz That's racist.
All photons are equal.

raz
2:57 PM
@TerryChia Photons are not equal: arxiv.org/abs/1108.5036

@TerryChia Nope - I refuse to recognise Twilight as canon
2
> we can show that photon distinguishability can be actually quantified by the rate of distinguishability of photons

@raz Hahaha. Love the title.

WUT?

@RoryAlsop Physics.

raz
@TerryChia Thought you'd like that

3:01 PM
@TerryChia It's not physics. That sentence says the amount of foo in bar is quantified by the amount of foo in bar
it's bad English, is what it is

@RoryAlsop What do you expect? They are physicist, not english majors.

@TerryChia proofreaders are cheap
<sigh>

@RoryAlsop Hehe, I was trying to resist.

right - time to go home. I've been here for 10 hours already.
Later all

bye donut lover

3:11 PM
@RoryAlsop early start was early!

3:26 PM
@RoryAlsop yea...
Well I learned my lesson about getting drunk at EY events :p
still got mocked for it by the team :<

4:15 PM
@LucasKauffman So your team at EY is exactly like The DMZ? ;)

4:44 PM
Hey guys..
never asked a question here before, migrated a number of questions though, im a moderator on programmers
It wasn't clear to me if I am concerned about a potential security breach in my home network and identifying what is going on if this is more on topic here or at superuser?
Some very bizarre things are happening in my router and I need help figuring things out

@maple_shaft I can't see why it would be off-topic here if you're thinking that it might be a security issue.

cool
i will post the question then
just collecting more research on the network traffic

@maple_shaft This question has a similar template as what yours would be, I think: security.stackexchange.com/questions/67845/…
The user was unsure if it was a hardware issue or something security related.
The question was well-received by the community, so I'm assuming yours would be too.

nvm.. I think i know what is happening now
I am running Dogecoin QT and it looks like it is using UPnP configured on my router
my router is automatically adding port forwards to accommodate it since it is a P2P app
started freaking out over nothin

Well, now you can relax and have a beer.

4:56 PM
ty later

babai

raz
@Simon I just had 2 beers for lunch
Just that kind of Friday

@raz Lovely, I haven't a similar lunch in a long time, I'm due for one.
Late night beers are great but definitely can't be compared with lunch beers.

5:15 PM
@Simon You need a very large lunch to have it help you sleep at night though
or a very late lunch

@AJHenderson Especially when you have a newborn, AM I RIGHT?
God your life must suck at the moment.

@Simon no, then it only takes a little beer
properly applied

You're feeding beer to the kid?

in seriousness though, it hasn't been that bad. My wife is home from work now and I've been working half days, but she's been doing most of the heavy lifting since she is still home full time for now
will be more tricky at 3 months when she goes back to work
and no, you don't give the beer to the kid, that'd be bad parenting. You give it to the wife so she doesn't care when you let the baby cry all night in the other room

raz
Babies, ruiners of men's lives.
babies EST. 10000 BC "Ruiners of Men's lives"

5:23 PM
the baby isn't the problem, the damage down below is
c-sections suck
6 weeks recovery is a long freaking time

raz
ugh

@RоryMcCune yeah - very true. But a good day today - lots done and I got lunch with Kieron :-)

@RoryAlsop My good friend Kieron?!? No way!!!

raz
@Simon Man this Kieron person sounds awesome.

@raz Hell yeah, he's like the donut of all donuts.

raz
5:38 PM
@Simon Dude do you realize what you're saying

@raz Yes, yes. Out of all donuts, he's THE donut.

raz
THEE jelly donut

1 hour later…
6:55 PM
@RoryAlsop Your mom is a cheap proofreader.

dayum

7:06 PM
@ScottPack lol
blimming room owners

@RoryAlsop Don't be mad at him, he's American which means he has no idea what he's doing most of the time.

raz
@Simon Hey now! I'm American and...
Well you're kinda right

@raz it's okay - @Simon's Canadish

What's a Cana dish?

raz
@Simon Means your a leaf

7:17 PM
@Simon Seriously though, it think there's something in the water here.

I don't really consider myself a citizen of Canada, I strongly believe that I am way more a citizen of Retard.
@DavidFreitag That might be why you're always trying to steal our water.

@Simon that's too easy, you'll have to try harder for stars

@Simon I can't imagine anyone has to steal anything from Canada. Just ask politely and you get what you want.

@AJHenderson You suck, go back to diaper changing.

@DavidFreitag and some free maple syrup to go with it
@Simon it's more fun to deal with your shit ;)

7:19 PM
@AJHenderson No no, it's your choice of maple syrup, maple candy, or maple bacon.

@AJHenderson Oh you donut.

@DavidFreitag if bacon is involved, then that isn't a choice

@AJHenderson Normally I just push them down and run off with all three

@AJHenderson haha
Mmmm maple syrup, bacon, blueberries and pancakes

Only to hear "I'm sorey, eh!" from afar.

7:43 PM
@RoryAlsop I find it amusing that @LucasKauffman thinks of kieron as a senior person when I always remember him from when I was there and he was a newbie associate :)

1 hour later…
9:05 PM
Can we get rid of this question:
5
Q: Do I need a bachelor's degree to break in information security?

RalphFirst of all, I have a college diploma in computer networking. I tried to get a job as network admin, but because of my lack of experience in that field I did not succeed. So I returned as a help desk technician (I already had 2 years of experience in this). So here I am, 4 years of tech suppor...

My flag for opinion-based was accepted and it's a duplicate of this:
5
Q: Is a Master's in infosec required to break into the security field?

gfppasteSo I'm going to be graduating college in January 2013, with a double major in Compsci and Cell Biology (don't ask...). I'm really looking to break into the information security field as a consultant. (Ideally, risk management) I would like to start working straight out of undergrad... I'll have ...

1 hour later…
10:14 PM
@RоryMcCune he's a senior manager
@TerryChia kind of, they will not miss an opportunity to mock me with it ;)
But my director told me it's better to have done that on a training event than during an event where it actually mattered. It's also you only do once.

10:33 PM
@RоryMcCune ^ see what @Lucas said...I don't think it is only once...remember Dan C...

@RoryAlsop Dan C ?

@LucasKauffman was one of our team way back in the day :-)
It really wasn't once...

@RoryAlsop what happened to him?
@RoryAlsop yea well I learned my lesson ;)

@LucasKauffman He's now head of technology risk at a financial institution :-)

@RoryAlsop I think I need to drink more!
@RoryAlsop on the bright side, I wasn't the worst one
@RoryAlsop what did keiron say anyway?
