@Adnan life isn't fiar, the marauder costs 389 USD in the US and 600 euro here :(

@LucasKauffman Holy shit!! That big of a difference?
and why are we up this late?

@Adnan yea
@Adnan had a bbq
then a game of league
wbu?

@LucasKauffman Just came from a bar. Everybody is sleeping, and I'm hungry
I want to cook something, but then I'd have to make some noise

@Adnan make a sandwich

@LucasKauffman I'm ashamed to say that I have no sandwich ingredients.
I have bread and banana.

12:14 AM
Breadana!

I think I'll make a banana sandwich with strawberry jam
Success!
I'm not proud of what just happened
@LucasKauffman Wait wait wait! There's something wrong here.
$389 is for the marauder pistol (same action but with shorter barrel, no stock, and smaller airtank)
and I think the 600€ is for the rifle

@Adnan Yes, it's missing your face in the picture.

12:35 AM
@Adnan nope it was a discount by the seller

12:52 AM
@Simon What?! Can't you see it? It's in the top right corner.

That looks like a strawberry jam and butter sandwich.

@ScottPack I understand why you, as an American, would think so. However, I assure you that's banana.

@Adnan I do so love cooking with butter.

@ScottPack Joking aside, I've never tried it. Perhaps I should give it a go sometime

I would never eat a butter and jam sandwich, it just sounds terrible.
Butter is my typical cooking fat of choice, though.
You just have to be careful because it's not that hard to burn it.

1:02 AM
@ScottPack Yeah, I hear you need to raise the burning point by breaking it with some oil

Yeah, butter has a pretty low smoke point. Clarified butter will go much higher but it can be hard to find. I've never tried making it myself.
I have olive, grape seed, and coconut oil in my cabinet.

@Adnan I'm not dumb you know, it's not there!

Olive is my go to pan fat. I use grape if I need higher heat, or don't want the olive oil taste.
Coconut is pretty freaking fantastic for popping popcorn.

Coconut shouldn't exist.

@ScottPack Really? Olive oil in the pan? Such a brave choice!

1:05 AM
Unless you're stuck on an island.

It's got a pretty strong flavor so you want to be careful how you use it, but a really high smoke point. It also doesn't seem to change the flavor of popcorn, strangely.
Plus, it leaves the popcorn very non-greasy.

@Simon Only one of these two sentences is true

Well played, well played.
I see your face on the picture now.

@Adnan I have a gas range so my thermal response is much better.

we need in the room tags

1:08 AM
@ScottPack Well, I cannot afford cooking with olive oil.
I should probably start buying those second-press olive oil to use it for cooking

olive oil is what I use for pretty much anything that needs to be cooked at a really high heat, otherwise I just use vegetable oil

What has the world come to? The woman makes me clean stuff while she's playing video games.

@Hiroto For high heat I go with grape seed. Olive is pretty ok, but I wouldn't call it high.
I'm really surprised olive is so high on the list. It seems to burn much easier than that.
Ah, yeah, Extra Virgin is pretty low. Nevermind.

@Hiroto I usually go with the exact opposite.

extra virgin is the cold-pressed stuff, right?

1:12 AM
I really don't know.

Veg oil for cooking, and oilive oil for everything else olice oil

I've been meaning to get some safflower oil to try out.

The expensive stuff is the cold-pressed stuff you use in salads, @Adnan
Virgin olive oil is the cooking stuff

I just get annoyed with the oils imparting too much flavor.
Things like butter I use because I want the butter flavor. Most of the time I just want to use a flavor neutral oil.
My dad will make pancakes with olive oil. :(

@Hiroto I don't know, I almost never cook with olive oil
@ScottPack I feel the opposite. I love when olive oil imparts its flavour.

1:15 AM
I use it way too much (Spaghetti with garlic oil is fantastic)

I think pesto is my go to olive oil based drug of choice.

@Hiroto The hell is garlic oil?

slice up a crapton of garlic cloves and fry it in olive oil, then drizzle it over al dente pasta with plenty of pepper

You take olive oil. Throw some garlic in. Wait.

@Hiroto @Scott Ahaaaa! Never knew that that is called garlic oil.

1:37 AM
@RoryAlsop which one is that?
themirror?

5 hours later…
6:38 AM
@ScottPack why in the world wouldn't you want the olive oil taste??
sometimes I add olive oil just for the taste. even when I dont need oil.
@Adnan you can't afford not cooking with olive oil.
besides the fact that it makes everything delicious, and frying seems to come out much better, it also happens to be a hell of a lot healthier for you.

2 hours later…
8:58 AM
@ajhenderson derfder

@RoryAlsop hodor

And as @avid says, olive oil works for everything
4

@RoryAlsop hey hey, dont start any rumours going, I explicitly said it works for cooking everything.
I have no clue how olive oil would work for any of those... "dubious" activities.
Don't want @Adnan blaming me for anything.... ;-)

9:55 AM
Hahahahaha

@AviD I'm sure Popeye would have something to say about that.

@Iszi lol
@Iszi rule 34?

@AviD Sorry. Not into the anorexic types, myself.

@Iszi nor I, but someone must be. How else would you explain Clay Aiken?

@AviD Never bothered to. What's your interest in him - hmmm?

10:03 AM
@Iszi wait - Clay Aiken is a guy??

@AviD Well, I suppose about as much as Justin Bieber is.

@Iszi Maybe we could get @ScottPack to verify him?

@Iszi sure, JB is an effeminate man-child, but I thought clay was a slightly (very slightly) butch lesbo.

@AviD No, Aiken's definitely a guy. Definitely a gay guy, but a guy nonetheless.
Funny thing - even the mother of his child has a guy's name: Jaymes.
Anyhoo, it's past 0600 - something I partially blame on The Doctor - and I should be heading to bed.
Annoying thing about Doctor Who: Most of the multi-part episodes don't follow the typical naming convention of "[Episode Name] Part [#]".
Had no idea, going into it, that Utopia was the first of a three-parter.

Utopia? Which one's that?

10:14 AM
S3E12

ah right, where they find you-know-who...
I've found there is nothing "typical" about Doctor who episodes, least of all the naming.

Well, there seems to be a bit of an oddity in season 4 where a couple episodes actually do follow the normal multi-part naming convention.
It's like the writers got bored of trying to think of unique names or something.

I'm also curious how much of the season they (the screenwriters) plan in advance, or just make it up as they go along.

Know what the biggest disappointment so far has been for me? The Face of Boe. Seriously, he had so much more potential. I mean, the twist of his origins is cool and all but I was really hoping for something a bit more.

@Iszi yeah, with all those billions of years of history, he could have appeared a bit more.
but then, with over 900 years of travelling, it does seem that we get only the crumbs of it all, don't we...
@Iszi cant figure out which ones you mean...

10:20 AM
@AviD Well, there's still 8 Doctors worth of history I need to catch up on sometime.
Right now, I should be catching up on sleep instead.

@Iszi yeah... I've been thinking aobut that too, but I'm not sure I can bring myself to do it.

@AviD S4E17-18. The End of Time, Parts 1 & 2.

besdes the sheer amount of it, it is clearly of much lower quality, in acting, filming, writing, effects,... perhaps the stories themselves are up to it...

@AviD Nevermind appeared a bit more. He could have just been a bit more.

@Iszi hmm. Yeah, I remember those - curious why imdb doesnt list them?

10:22 AM
@AviD I expect it won't be much dissimilar from trying to re-watch ST:TOS now.

anyway - gnite
@Iszi yeah, just more so.

@AviD Wow. It looks like they're missing a whole four episodes from the end of season 4.

also, for me at least, I started ST with TOS, so its at least familiar. I only got into the new seasons with the Doctor.
@Iszi and a few in the middle.

@AviD I vaguely remember seeing occasional re-runs of TOS, or listening to it on the radio. Really didn't catch on until TNG though.
G'night.

10:36 AM
@AviD Okay, I guess now I get what you mean.
The things is, I always buy the cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil. You really cannot cook with that

@Adnan So you like your stuff extra-virgin?

@Adnan hmm, I guess not, havent really tried. I just buy large amounts of regular (ie. non-cold pressed) virgin olive oil, I think simple omelletes for the kids is the only thing I don't fry with it.

@AviD It has a very low smoking point and the taste becomes really bad once heated to high temp required for sautéing, for example.

oh, and cheese - it seems to not interact well when frying cheese.

@TerryChia That's why I like you :D

10:40 AM
@Adnan this might help:

@AviD After @Scott suggested it, and now you seconded it, I think I'll get me some regular olive oil and try it out for pan frying
I'm not sure how to feel about this, but recently I've become hooked to
Regular Show is an American animated television series created by J. G. Quintel for Cartoon Network. The series revolves around the lives of two friends, a Blue Jay named Mordecai and a raccoon named Rigby, both employed as groundskeepers at a park. Their usual attempts to slack off often lead to surreal misadventures that are either over the top or supernatural. The show's tagline, "It's anything but", alludes to this. The series is produced by Cartoon Network Studios. Although the series does not air on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block and is rated TV-PG, it is considered more of an a...

Man - I hate refactoring code.
Bleeding pain in the ass.

@TerryChia This is exactly what I'm doing now. I feel your pain
Perhaps not in the ass, but yes it's very painful
What are you refactoring?

@Adnan I'm converting my GWT GUI code from using Java to layout the page into using UIBinder which allows me to use HTML to do the layout.
It's a damn boring job.
Then I'm going to look into breaking out some pieces into more reusable chunks. Yawn.

@avid Besides the heat point thing changing the flavor sometimes the taste just isn't compatible. Take the pancake example earlier. Buttermilk pancakes fried with olive oil just taste werird.

@ScottPack hmm, okay, I'll grant that. Similar to omelletes, I guess.
as I said it also does not do well with frying cheese.

I wouldn't have thought of that but it makes sense.

1:12 PM
@TerryChia Damn! I'm getting sleepy just reading that

@ScottPack Perhaps the exception to the olive oil rule is any breakfast food.
Except bacon. Anything works with bacon.

Bacon is self frying.
Strangely, I still prefer pancakes fried in butter rather than bacon grease.

@ScottPack really? I would prefer bacon grease over pancakes, no matter how they're made.
Just the grease. in a cup.
@ScottPack but it does just show how little I really know about frying bacon... though I would have guessed, I am sadly lacking in experience in this field.

1:33 PM
The most devout bacoholic I know is a practicing Jew. I haven't pried into the particulars.

2:22 PM
Mmmmmmmmmm. Bacon. Bacon omelette. Was a good morning before I had to hop on a plane. Off to India for a week. Do they have bacon in India?

@RoryAlsop I hear they do not.

:-(

Unless you want to look at soy bacon. But from experience, that's just not very good.

Soy bacon is just wrong

@RoryAlsop they do have cows though - I know somebody who got run over by a cow.
make sure you look both ways before you cross the street.

2:26 PM
I think we will have drivers in every city :-)

@RoryAlsop cool, but doesnt mean you wont cross any streets.
And get run over by a cow.
@RoryAlsop going for work, or vacation?

Work... Four different cities in one week. Going to be slightly tiring, I'm guessing

@RoryAlsop whoa. road trip!

I will try and avoid cows. I assume a steak is probably out of he question too

wait, does RBS have so many branches in India?

2:32 PM
Nah - will fly between each city. India is BiG
These aren't branches. They are data centres, call centres, dev labs etc
Plus, RBS has branches everywhere

@RoryAlsop I think "Big" is something of an understatement.

Yeah - it always amazes me how many times the UK could fit into other countries. Of course there are some countries that have surprised me by being small (I wish I had thought more about Israel before I went - I would have planned some more tourism)

@RoryAlsop Heh, UK. What about Singapore?

But India - huge. I will have four flights between cities in India, each of which is further than most of my flights in europe

@AviD So does that mean you can get some really good beef jerky in India?
@RoryAlsop Yeah, the UK is only about twice the size of the state I live in, and it's the 34th largest (out of 50).
@RoryAlsop Thanks to the magic of wikipedia I can see that if the UK were a state in the US it would be ranked 12th in land area.

2:45 PM
North America is crazy huge. When I first heard about the percentage of USA'ians who never left their state I was sceptical. Until I realised this still meant that many travelled farther than a good percentage of Europeans.

It never occurred to me until I was in college just how true that was. We'll drive 220 miles (~350 km) for a weekend trip to visit my in-laws.

@ScottPack @RoryAlsop The UK would file into Texas nearly three times. And Texas fits into Alaska 2.5 times.

@Xander Pretty crazy. It's just slightly smaller than Michigan.

@ScottPack Yup. It takes 11 and a half hours to drive east to west across Texas from Port Arthur to El Paso, and the only reason it's that quick is that the speed limit for over 500 miles in west Texas is 85 MPH.

@Xander I've flown over Texas but have never actually visited. The scale of that place is pretty mind-boggling.

2:58 PM
@RoryAlsop ah, call centres. Of course. So we can speak directly to "Michael" over in "Birmingham". Hey what's the weather like over by you?

@ScottPack And Scotland itself is smaller than South Carolina, and a bit larger than West Virginia.

@RoryAlsop As Bill Cosby used to say, Europeans can drive to another language in under two hours. 'Merkans can drive for 8 days without hitting another language.
But don't feel bad, I can speak fluent NewJersese, and I can understand Texan and Floridian pretty well.
@Xander (Israel is just under the size of New Jersey....)

Oh yeah, @Lucas, congrats!
Queen Mathilde is a hottie

3:26 PM
@Xander Don't forget. West Virginia is small enough to have no natural lakes.
@AviD I don't find Floridians to have much of an accent.

Q: Your boss calls

EdwardoYou're sitting in Starbucks drinking something, talking to the peoples. Your iPhone rings. It's your boss. He wants a file from his partner in Croatia stat. You log on and download it in this pubic place infested with vermin. You must deliver it to him pristine. If not you're canned. Your $400,00...

What is going ON?

@Simon I don't like that guy

Which one?

@ScottPack The poster of that question

@Adnan Me neither.

Do you know eddie?

4:11 PM
All he does is post his homework questions.

You know what I hate?

@ScottPack Do you know eddie?

@Adnan I'm looking through some of his posts.

@ScottPack Invalid flags?

Looks like a bit of a tool.
@Adnan Your face.
I should probably make lunch.

4:13 PM
@ScottPack Well, I happen to like it a lot.

I don't like how rude he is when his questions are pure shit.

@Simon At least it's pure. I don't really like other particles in my shit.

@Adnan True.

I haven't had corn in a while.

What the hell is happening in that room?
This is the 3rd flag I'm getting from it

4:17 PM
@Adnan Huh?
The boss calls thing?

@Simon Oh no, it's chat flags. You don't see that

@Adnan Thanks for reminding me how much I suck.

Ahaaa.. it's Muslims flagging other Muslims

Religion war?

Who cares.
These days I mark all flags as invalid.

4:18 PM
@Simon Not exactly. They both seem to be very Muslims.
@ScottPack Same here

I've yet to see a flag come through that's even reasonably offensive.
@Adnan There are many different sects of Islam, and they are even more annoyed with eachother than Christians.
2

@Adnan What's the room? I'll notify the Temperance mods

The dude asked 7 questions and yet none of them has an upvote.

@ScottPack That doesn't seem to be the case here.

@Adnan meh

thx

Personally, I feel that people tend to take religion too personally. Just because I disagree doesn't mean I'm saying that you're worthless.

Ahaaaaa! One of them believes in evolution and the other doesn't.
Interesting.

Ah, Al Ummat is there (a mod). So they already know

That's a pretty hot topic over here too.

4:21 PM
@ScottPack I disagree with you and you're worthless.
2

@Adnan Haha, so it's close to a religion war, except it's about beliefs :P

@Adnan See now, those are two independent statements. You just happen to carry both of them.

Alright, I have no idea what he's trying to achieve but I hope he's gonna get what he deserves. Poly told him to stop asking HW questions here and the dude replied "so you don't know".

@Simon You see, we're okay with homework questions. It's just that kind of questions we don't like.
We want to see that you made an effort.

@Adnan That conversation is amusing. "You're asking actual questions that require thought and consideration! BAN THE INFIDEL!!"
@Adnan Right. Asking questions from homework is find with me. Doing your homework for you is not fine.

4:26 PM
@Adnan Yes exactly. At least, don't make it obvious that it's a hw question.

@ScottPack Well, to avoid jumping to conclusions, I went through his profile.
He appears to be either an ex-Muslim or with good knowledge of Islam.

What do you mean by avoid jumping to conclusions? I don't understand.

@ScottPack oh, you've been visiting SO?

@ScottPack Sorry, avoiding jumping to incorrect conclusions.

@Gilles You take that back.

4:30 PM
@ScottPack I'm too lazy to jump into conclusions, I prefer to slouch into them

@Gilles That would apply much better to Meta.SO

@Gilles I like the sound of that.
Jumping tends to spill my drink.

He entered the chat with premise "there's no God". Like most religious individuals, the regulars there are incapable of processing such an outrageous claim.
While I agree with almost everything he said, I really think it wasn't such a great idea to go there.
I mean really, why would you rap to a Mozart concerto audience..

@Adnan That's one of the reasons why I dislike religion. A statement like this shouldn't make you mad, everybody has their own opinion.
@Adnan That'd be sick.

@Adnan "Sick" is what hipsters say when they mean "neato".

4:34 PM
@Simon Exactly. I mean they created a whole SE site with chat rooms and everything for that purpose. I don't think there's anything to fix them.
Just let them have fun with their beliefs.
@ScottPack and we all know how big of a hipster @Simon is.

Oh c'mon, I've been using the term "sick" since I'm a kid.
Back when hipster wasn't even a thing, alright?

I hope you see the irony in your statement.

@Adnan That's the whole point :)

Yup, I'm not following the conversation anymore. It's getting too YouTube-commenty.

@Simon has been a hipster since before it was cool.

4:37 PM
@ScottPack Damn right.

@ScottPack So before NULL ?

Aw snap.

5:06 PM
I've just tried your advice, guys. I've cooked some chicken stir-fry with olive oil.
Pretty neat.

Nice

AdnanIn a web-server environment, there's no need for logging. The logging can be done client-side by using hashtables, as it's much more effective than server-side logging.

5:25 PM
I want to see what maker has to say about that. Should be amusing.

@ScottPack Have you UPvoted it?!
Come on! That's evil!

Q: Will space-related questions be migrated to SEx.SE (Space Exploration) after it goes public?

Deer HunterIn two days, Space Exploration SE is going public. How will the migration of space-related questions proceed? Note: it is not my fault that the folks have chosen this moniker. After all, we have IT Security.SE (Sec.SE) and nobody complains.

You guys have been beaten

> "...might save civilization’s data for aliens if humankind is gone"

that edwardo guy is a douche :/

I always find quotes like this one really funny... if there's an alien civ out there that will find our recordings, they'd have to be at least as advanced as we are to read it... so, what could we possibly contribute except the laughs?

@TildalWave archeology

@TildalWave why does everyone always assume that different civilizations will advance equally along the same paths?

9:50 PM
@AviD I'm not, I just assume our path is the lowest of the possible ones, and constantly being on the edge of self-annihilation kinds proves it

e.g. they might discover space travel, and advanced linguistics, but be sorely lacking other areas. Such as lolcats.

@AviD I did say "except the laughs" :P

@TildalWave I dont see how? we've advanced more in the destructive areas than in the ethics. or self-preservation.

@AviD and we still have big problems moving our asses to the nearest of planets

10:03 PM
@TildalWave give it 10, maybe 15 years. We have some big problems.

@AviD Too late for that IMO... and if I can be a bit more cynical, what storage medium do we store blueprints for the device to read this 1 million years medium? Or are "advanced alien civilisations" supposed to get it, because they tend to stick every little thingie they come along under an atomic microscope?

....

@LucasKauffman That's understating it.

@TildalWave you're using our scientific concepts again.

@AviD Yeah... tough luck, don't think that'll ever happen. We'll be just as stupid when we settle other planets, as we're now, if not more.
@AviD OK,... so if I stop using "our" scientific concepts for a minute, how do we know that our planet isn't already littered with 1 million years old alien porn all over, we just didn't think of sticking every beach pebble under a microscope, or something?

10:10 PM
@TildalWave ah, there ya go!
ooo those pebbles are so damn hot....

So. Allegedly I have the permissions to vote to delete questions on SF. Where the fuck is it?

@AviD Cute too, if you bother to look close enough :)
@ScottPack Probably on posts voted as low q?

@TildalWave oh shit, you just reinvented Scientology, all over again.
only a slightly pervier version of it.

@AviD noooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ScottPack I don't think you get that at 10k

10:12 PM
@TildalWave where is the option to cast a delete vote.

@ScottPack How would I know? My max on SE is 6k something :P I'm just screwing with you :))

@ScottPack Oh wait, you do have that option.

@ScottPack between the close button and the flag button?

@AviD Where?

> You must wait for a question to be closed for 2 days before you can vote for deletion. This restriction is removed for trusted users.

It says there the delete option is in the close options

@AviD The question needs to be closed for 2 days before 10Ks can vote to delete it

@AviD I don't see the delete option.

10:17 PM
@ScottPack Duuuude!

@ScottPack need them freehands?

> You must wait for a question to be closed for 2 days before you can vote for deletion. This restriction is removed for trusted users.

@Adnan ah, well, there ya go

@AviD only took 3 tries :)

10:18 PM
So can only closed questions be voted on?

@ScottPack unless you're god mod

@AviD Or have 20K

@ScottPack I believe also any other low-q & spam flagged posts?

@ScottPack yes, deletion is only for questions that have been closed for at least 2 days
it's not a very useful privilege
seeing deleted posts is a lot more useful
at 20k, you can also delete answers with a negative score (and questions that have been closed for less than 2 days, but you shouldn't do that)

@Gilles I wish I could see deleted comments.

10:27 PM
@Adnan that's mod-only, and even then has only existed for a year or so

@Gilles Well, I guess I don't need to write answers anymore. I thought that at 20k you can see deleted comments.

@Adnan 20k also lets you edit tag wikis without supervision

@Gilles The most sought-after privilege on the SE network.

@Adnan Yes, it's the only reason why I'm here.

@Gilles Were you doing this CTF much at all? I didn't have time to follow our progress much

10:33 PM
@TildalWave a bit, I solved two easy challenges
I'll post write-ups later

11:09 PM
@HamZa what do you mean? sure aliens exist... they're just not too civilized :P you probably mean "extraterrestrials"? :))

@TildalWave lolwut aren't they the same ?

@HamZa well not really...
> Alien: Adjective: Belonging to a foreign country or nation. Noun: A foreigner, esp. one who is not a naturalized citizen of the country where they are living.
