Allen wrenches piss me off.
I have at least 4 sets, and I can never find a single damned one of them!

Darn - I had a hot streak of 61 consecutive days here, but just missed one day. I had so much fun at a dance workshop :) and evidently didn't think to just refresh the "newest questions" tab - I was tired!

Q: How can we encourage "userxxxxx" accounts to fix their usernames?

IsziI've noticed there's a lot more accounts with names like "user1234" around here, than I'm used to seeing at other sites. Is there any way we can encourage these people to create unique, identifying usernames? Granted the usernames are technically unique, and are often accompanied by a unique gr...

@nealmcb Dammit - back to the start on that fanatic badge :-)
@AviD I'm not sure. I like the idea that people can effectively post with some privacy when they have to. But I agree that it would be nicer to know who the general community is

@AviD I've been noticing it a lot more on SF as well. From Jeff's answer, it looks like the SE software already has a fix in place.
Without something harsher, like deleting your account after x days, I'm not sure how much more encouragement one could have than a big red bar staring them in the face.

@packs Wouldn't call what seems to be (per Jeff's description) a one-time prompt a "fix", but it's better than nothing for sure.
@RoryAlsop Non-generic usernames can be just as anonymous while still being unique to the person who uses them. If people are really worried about anonymity, they'd change user accounts between posts.

@AviD Nice to know I'm not the only one being driven batty over this.

@AviD answered over on meta.

@Iszi I didn't realize it was a one-time thing. That's a little less invasive.

@packs Jeff's post said "at time of account creation" with no mention of subsequent reminders. So, it seems one-time to me.

It's entirely possible that I didn't read the message thoroughly enough. I was rather distracted at the time with other concerns.
