Is there any good, out-of-the-box linux desktop distro?

Define 'good'

Like don't have to worry about stuff breaking

@MechMK1 there's a reason I've not even gotten around to doing my test install of ubuntu 24.04
@nobody huh
If you're ok with older packages, debian isn't a bad choice

would there be any reason to not be ok with older packages?
like are there usually major bug or security issue fixes that don't come to debian within a reasonable time frame?

oh, security fixes get backported
but sometimes devs expect the latest and greatest
honestly for a day to day distro, its fine

10:48 AM
oh great. I'll give it a try.
I honestly hate how difficult it is for me to ditch windows, every time I try switching, I'm usually back after a few days.
I'd be fine with windows too if microsoft wouldn't try adding random bullshit to a thousand places so often

there's an (open source?) script that'll strip down windows 11
@nobody tbh, Other than games, I don't have anything partuclarly windows specific

its mostly the familiarity that keeps me locked in
@JourneymanGeek neat
although it doesn't look like it will stop an update from adding copilot or some other fancy crap to my computer without asking me

11:21 AM
@nobody I think at some point I realised I use web interfaces or terminals for everything
and there windows matters less
I'd happily switch to haiku if it had a mainstream, maintained web browser :D

> its mostly the familiarity that keeps me locked in
I mean ... yes and no
there is also the classic game of "guess where we hid the control panel this time"
I also get the impression m$ really really wants to put advertisement in the start bar & status bar ... and they are ever so slowly boiling that frog.

1:32 PM
and blocked an alternate shell
@CaffeineAddiction I think part of it they want to do a 'new' control panel and lack commitment
I'd add most of my linux use is command line so... I'm not going to get bit in the rear by UI changes much :D

7 hours later…
9:00 PM
@CaffeineAddiction Well yeah, the common thing about them happens to be that I can do 95% of the stuff I want by either hitting the windows key and searching or hitting Win+R and typing in a command
So the control panel is always at "[Win]+[R] control [enter]" for me

9:57 PM
@nobody I've been using Mint since Ubuntu launched the Unity interface a decade (?) ago and it's good.
I use windows only for gaming, even my corporate-mandated Windows installation is just the hipervisor, and I run Ubuntu under Hyper-V
