Does layers-of-meaning mean anything to anyone else? To me it seems like of those tags that sort of applies to everything (=meaning) and therefore nothing.

@Susan No tag-wiki guidance, I see. I wonder where it came from. I could imagine it relating to what we would otherwise call sensus plenior readings. We even have a few of those questions.

@Susan I agree it is useless. Pretty sure the person who has been putting it on many of his questions recently is just using it to mean "what is the meaning of this passage".

@ThaddeusB Wow. We seriously have a symbology tag?! Where do you find these things! :) Actually, it looks like @JonEricson bequeathed it to us back in Feb 2013 (#3). I'm not sure I've ever run across this term in biblical studies over the years. It would rather either be "symbolism" (simple) or "semiotics" (poncey).
Not that I really care ... just in case it ... sounds like ... I ... errrr.... really care.

@ThaddeusB I wonder if this is a case for a "synonym"?
My sense tallies with yours (I assume!) that meaningful tagging enhances the value of the site. Having sensible, transparent, and "expected" tags certainly works to that end.

@Davïd Yes, a synonym is warranted. The direction is debatable, but a search of Google Scholar shows very minimal use of "symbology" in Christian literature (naturally, a general search overwhelmingly favors "symbolism")

I created and synonymized semiotics as well. That direction seems debatable to me (I didn’t know the word poncey but I did know the word semiotics, @Davïd ;-)), happy to reverse it if anybody prefers.
