12:51 AM
Yo yo yo!

1 hour later…
1:56 AM
@AnindoGhosh Posted it as a question now.
@jippie You removed my tag! All the ASCII will turn to EBCDIC for you and seven generations of your progeny now. You can lift this curse by writing a token-ring stack for a PIC processor using EDLIN on a VT-100.

@angelatlarge gEEk cUrSe!

3:02 AM
@MLM Yo!

MLM
@coding_corgi that was fast... Heya

@MLM Whatcha doing?

MLM
@coding_corgi just got back from a long day at a robotics competition and concert

@MLM Awesome!
@MLM What exactly is Xilinix & FPGA?

MLM
@coding_corgi a FPGA is super parallel microcontroller such as Arduino and Xilinx is the IDE. (microcontroller and fpga aren't the most comparable... :P) - A FPGA is basically coded hardware. I learned by going through this course: hamsterworks.co.nz/mediawiki/index.php/FPGA_course

3:08 AM
@MLM Interesting... Where'd you here about it?

MLM
@coding_corgi first used one in a digital electronics class but we just used PLD logic (not sure if that ties into a cPLD or not) that we exported from Multisim which is a drag and drop circuit editor with simulation. Now I use VHDL

@MLM Huh
G 'night!

MLM
@coding_corgi bye?

Can anyone recommend a fast __DT analog switch? I need 3.3-5.5V, 100ns propagation in all cases. I could search Digikey, of course, but perhaps someone has one they love?

3:41 AM
@coding_corgi Don't listen to MLM

3:57 AM
An FPGA is not much like a microcontroller. Think of it better as a big pile of gates and flip-flops and you can program the connections between them.

1 hour later…
MLM
5:22 AM
@ThePhoton just explained it in terms I already knew he is familiar with. Coded hardware...

5:46 AM
I'm so resisting the temptation of reacting on this guy:
I am sorry but your knowledge is wrong, really wrong. Take a look in the theory of motors. To some writers/teachers call BLDC motor as "an alternative motor, we really can't say that's a dc motor at all" Take a look at this; kusabaengrs.in/servo-products.html And position control can be done via sensor/sensorless tecniques. — Hammers 4 mins ago

@AnindoGhosh It does seem to have of the hallmarks of a non medicated version of the troll that we know.

good morning

@rawbrawb This is one of @abdullahkahraman 's countrymen, and I realize that part of his problem is a grasp of the language.
Good time-of-day "=_

A: How to build a voltage-controlled current sink / voltage-controlled resistor

user24079THe App note says you can cascade up to 40 of these chips and setting different PWM levels naturally sequences the turn on surge current. The resistor for Iref controls the max current for your design. Each chip has 12 bits of PWM dimming to meet high resolution control. Are you saying this is n...

Me: bitch-bitch-bitch, complain, complain, complain, moan, moan, moan.
Oh, and I missed you all!
(trying to make up for bitchiness)

/me shrugs

It just dawned on me that that user cannot comment. That explains it.

6:34 AM
What are analog switched resistors?
I think my Google-fu is still off...

@angelatlarge reference?
@angelatlarge what is google-fu?

If you are looking for coarse tuning to another range , consider analog switched resistors. Extending the PWM range with the same accuracy is not feasible without feedback on brightness and self-calibration. — user24079 7 mins ago
Google skills. Like kung-fu except with googling, instead of martial arts.

@angelatlarge still rambling on over that silly question?

@jippie Sorry. yes. It is important to one of us :)
@jippie And Mr. or Ms. user24079 posted a new comment I'd like to understand.

:-p
i think a 4051 style bilateral switch
is it 4051?
let me check

6:40 AM
@jippie Did I reveal too much or my ignorance in my question?
@jippie I know what you mean.

@angelatlarge 4051 is a mux, but you have switches too, you know what I mean

But I did say I wanted to use a potentiometer. OK, that doesn't seem relevant then.

@angelatlarge don't know what your 100% ignorance is, so I don't know if you are revealing enough

7:07 AM
I'm so tempted to post a "You, sir, are a moron" response to a comment.

@AnindoGhosh Do you think others will upvote your post?

@jippie Which post? This is not on any post I have made.

A: Control old printer motor with position ring

HammersI think those motors are BLDCs. (brushless dc motor). BLDC motors are really hard to control. Hall-effect sensors are using in the control process. Although controls without those sensors are exists. Many thesis wrote about control of BLCD motors. "What all of them are controlled by is a translu...

@AnindoGhosh "I'm so tempted to post"

@jippie Yes, and? "post a response to a comment" = another comment

@AnindoGhosh a comment is a post, answer is a post, a question is a post. In my opinion that is.
@AnindoGhosh you need some ying yang and zen this morning @AnindoGhosh. Breath in deep ... and out through your nose.

7:14 AM
@jippie Oh, it's only because I am nicely centered within my zen today, that I haven't responded yet. That, and the fact that I'd rather have someone who understands his linguistic challenges better than me, dealing with him.

@AnindoGhosh while (1) { In with the good air; out with the bad; }

@jippie Hehehehe

@AnindoGhosh Stay strong, zen master

:-)
I'll go waste some time on reddit ;-)

@AnindoGhosh you make it sound like she is the devil herself.

7:22 AM
@jippie Who is she?

@jippie Oh hardly. She's like my guardian angel.
@angelatlarge My wife.

:)

@jippie She is the center of my zen.

@AnindoGhosh Was that the biggest non sequir in the history of talking, or did I miss something?

@angelatlarge It was by definition not a non sequitor, since he replied to my message, as you would have known had you clicked on the "in-reply-to" icon thingie :-D
I'll BRB

7:25 AM
@AnindoGhosh I hovered over it, nothing got highlighted, so I gave up. Apparently, I did miss something.

@angelatlarge if I star that, my name won't be included, right?

user61389
@angelatlarge so?

7:32 AM
@CamilStaps Thanks for reminding me, some people dislike using the Lord's name in vain. I was trying to note your resurrection from being killed by @coding_corgi.
@CamilStaps Sleep != handout.
@CamilStaps I left a free beer question for you :)

@angelatlarge I'm just very generous with stars today, because I'm so happy I'm still alive.

@CamilStaps Did you get almost run over by a bicycle?

@angelatlarge @CamilStaps lived through @coding_corgi DoS-gun

DoS = Denial of Service?

user61389
True

Didn't know that was lethal

@angelatlarge you learned something today

@jippie Mmm... I am reserving judgment on that.
@jippie Oh, look, the quality answer just got equalized.

@hammers The reference you have pointed out is not even a source of information. In addition to that you'd better learn how to be modest and improve your English first. — abdullah kahraman 1 min ago
@anindogosh there you go
Do you want me to teach some swearing words in Turkish? :)
Anyways I have to go. Bye all.

8:58 AM
@abdullahkahraman That guy's response was amusing. He's a bit disconnected from reality, but he sure is self-confident.

9:14 AM
@jippie That sensor noise person might actually be using an RT232, since those are pretty cheap and ubiquitous in industrial sensor environments.
In which case, a capacitor won't make much of a difference, since those drivers use 4-20mA current drive signaling. Perhaps an inductance in series would make sense?

user61389
9:56 AM
@AnindoGhosh okay, agreed :)

@CamilStaps :-)

10:28 AM
@AnindoGhosh not wasting my time today on poor questions with poor feedback from the OP
does hot glue stick well to concrete walls and wood?

@jippie, no

1 hour later…
11:43 AM
@jippie No, it does pretty badly with porous substrates. I've found two-part high viscosity adhesives to work much better for small join areas, and of course concrete-specific caulk and similar products for big joins.
@jippie There are also some UV-cure and thermal-cure silicone-based adhesives that we've used on occasion for sticking stuff to relatively well-finished concrete when there is expected exposure to outdoor weather.

12:12 PM
Hi ppl.

12:54 PM
m
@AnindoGhosh does it stick well on wood then?

1:26 PM
Yo yo yo!

1:38 PM
@coding_corgi does hot glue stick well on wood @coding_corgi?

@jippie Umm... In my past, it will stick, but you can easily rip it off. ;)

2:13 PM
@jippie Could you help me for a sec?

?

@jippie Hot glue requires a non-porous surface, so if the wood is polished and with a veneer then yes, otherwise no. Even with polish, it's adhesion is poor.

@jippie I am having trouble reading the answers on this question:

Q: Most efficient way to read analog signals in c++

coding_corgiI am new to AVR programming, and I am trying to learn the basic I/O with C++. I am trying to find the simplest, most efficient way to read analog signals using the same function for different devices, just like the analogRead() function in the Wiring language (Arduino code). But I have not foun...

@AnindoGhosh so why did I buy a hot glue gun again?
@coding_corgi Did you read the datasheet on ADC's in your microcontroller?

@jippie No, would it be in the full one?

2:20 PM
@jippie Very simple: (A) because you wanted to glue components to plastic or a PCB or a case, or to hold a board in a case, or (B) because it was a gadget you saw and decided you would find useful if you ever figured out what it would be useful for.

@coding_corgi 'Complete'

@jippie Under what section?

user61389
@jippie you're Dutch, you're way too freehanded.

@coding_corgi ADC?

@AnindoGhosh ...

2:22 PM
@coding_corgi In general one would expect ADC information in the ADC section, right?

@AnindoGhosh i guess it was (B), but eventually I found a smarter way.

user61389
Also, most documents have something called a table of contents or index... Might be useful!

"I want to learn how to use the ADC" / "Oh, of course, just look in the external clock sources section"

@CamilStaps No, that's not very useful...

user61389
@coding_corgi what? Why not?

2:26 PM
@CamilStaps Yo @CamilStaps, there's a little thing called sarcasm... ;)
@jippie I see 'Analog Comparator'

analog to digital converter => adc
is not analog comparator

@jippie Oh, yeah, i see that section.
@jippie I found the section what do I do now?

user61389
Start reading

@CamilStaps 'bout what?

user61389
@coding_corgi bunnies

2:31 PM
@CamilStaps Really? That's a whole lot more interesting than I thought!
@CamilStaps Wait, what does bunnies have to do with ADC?

If anyone here is experienced with MSP430 USCIB I2C modules, please check out my question electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/69746/…

user61389
@coding_corgi bunnies are sweet and cute, ADCs neither.

@CamilStaps True dat, need bunny nao!
@BarışcanKayaoğlu Boy, you put some work into that!

@coding_corgi This is a base of my engineering graduation project lol

@BarışcanKayaoğlu EEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkKKKKKK! You need an answer!

2:39 PM
@coding_corgi Well too bad my instructor is an fpga fan from apple and it's she's first experience with TI products :) So she's kinda waiting my library to understand the whole concept ^^ Well the deadline is friday with a 50 page report so it's kinda already lost. They'll just give me 2 extra months so i lost hope for the base for now. Just reading the whole concept not to lose more time in that 2 months ;)

@BarışcanKayaoğlu GET OUT OF CHAT! WORK ON THAT PAPER!

I have a box in which the food for my cat is located. How can I effectively detect if the cat has been in the box (apart from the food going low). I want to be able to feed the information to a microcontroller.

Do you guys have fair knowledge on assembly?
can you understand anything by this?
If a master wants to receive a single byte only, the UCTXSTP bit must be set while the byte is being
received. For this case, the UCTXSTT may be polled to determine when it is cleared:
BIS.B #UCTXSTT,&UCBOCTL1 ;Transmit START cond.
POLL_STT BIT.B #UCTXSTT,&UCBOCTL1 ;Poll UCTXSTT bit
JC POLL_STT ;When cleared,
BIS.B #UCTXSTP,&UCB0CTL1 ;transmit STOP cond.

@ThePhoton Is it a good idea to clean up our two answers to tell the same story? It appears that you answer part A and I answer part B, but there is a misalignment in terminology used. I'm happy to answer my answer to align it with yours (which is actually based on the manual).

A: Oscillocope interleave mode and repetitive mode

The PhotonI found the manual for your scope here. Interleave mode and Repetitive mode are separate/orthogonal functions. You can have one or both of these functions on or neither of them. Interleave mode "doubles the amount of memory per channel, while cutting the number of channels in half." Essentially...

3:32 PM
@jippie No prob. Feel free to edit mine to remove the parentheses part.
@jippie I thought you guys called him "van Hockch"

Well ... I was actually kinda lost on how I should edit mine. Should I
1) remove my paragraph on Repetitive mode and then
2) rename my paragraph Interleave mode to Repetitive mode
3) refer to your answer for Interleave mode
?

@jippie What is that, the audio version of Wikipedia?

@ThePhoton uhhuh, you can hear how 'Vincent van Gogh' is pronounced.

@jippie Pretty much like I remembered. There's just no way to write the Dutch "ch" sound in English.

Morning.

3:42 PM
@ThePhoton I was puzzled, so I found the audio ;o)

user61389

@jippie Have something like this: sparkfun.com/products/10245, if something exceeds the weight of the platform that the cat walks on to get to the food, light an LED up?
@MLM Yo

5:05 PM
@vvavepacket Then you should go for a PhD.

5:16 PM
Hi guys!

@abdullahkahraman Yo

@coding_corgi What's up?

@abdullahkahraman Struggling with AVR ADC....

@coding_corgi Does that design include a 555 chip?

@abdullahkahraman Nope

5:20 PM
@coding_corgi Good, then :)
@coding_corgi How far could you go so far?

@abdullahkahraman Ummm... Trying to read the answers on this question: electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/69750/…, but keep losing against a language close to alien, so...

@coding_corgi Why are you using C++?

@abdullahkahraman What is the problem with C++ on AVR? I do it all the time.

@angelatlarge Do you know C?

@abdullahkahraman (I am assuming C++ != C++ standard library, BTW)
@abdullahkahraman Sure.

5:25 PM
@angelatlarge Oh, sorry I thought I was talking to @coding_corgi
@angelatlarge Yeah, that one I meant :)

@abdullahkahraman Sorry. I still wonder why what people have against C++ on AVR as in the answer @coding_corgi reference.
@abdullahkahraman Ah. So maybe I am out of step with everyone for making that distinction.

@angelatlarge I don't like C++, although I know nothing about it. It looks ugly..
But I am not against C++, I cannot be, as I don't know about it.

@abdullahkahraman I use C++ on AVR not for the STL/C++SL but to wrap libraries into objects, kind of like Arduino does. That seems useful.

@abdullahkahraman BOOOOOOOOO!!!!

@coding_corgi Yeah, make it shorter a little more

5:36 PM
@abdullahkahraman No!

Syntax-wise, what is the difference between C and C++?
Would I learn it fast?

@abdullahkahraman Nothing much.

i guess c++ includes object oriented

@abdullahkahraman Yes they are like the same thing, but one is newer than the other
@vvavepacket So is C, right?

@coding_corgi No, C is not object-oriented

5:39 PM
@abdullahkahraman Really?!

@coding_corgi C does not help you write object oriented programs. You can write object oriented programs in C, but you have to do a lot of things "manually", where in an "object-oriented language" like C++ or Java or Ruby, the language/compiler would do those things for you automatically.

Objective-C is a general-purpose, high-level, object-oriented programming language that adds Smalltalk-style messaging to the C programming language. It is the main programming language used by Apple for the OS X and iOS operating systems and their respective APIs, Cocoa and Cocoa Touch. Originally developed in the early 1980s, it was selected as the main language used by NeXT for its NeXTSTEP operating system, from which OS X and iOS are derived. Generic Objective-C programs that do not use the Cocoa or Cocoa Touch libraries can also be compiled for any system supported by GCC or Clang....

:))

@ThePhoton duh! O\-

Q: What's the difference between C and C++

DinahI know that C++ has the concept of objects but C doesn't. I also know that pretty much all there is to know about C fits into K & R but the C++ library is vastly more complex. There have got to be other big differences though. What are the major differences between C and C++?

5:40 PM
@abdullahkahraman The objectiveness of C!
@jippie Ok, yeah, yeah, i get it...
@jippie So your cat is sneaking out food?

no I just want to know if they've been eating or not

@jippie Oh, the food you feed them?

Upvoting because of "...many people develop C++ programs that are basically C programs and not even realize it." — overslacked Mar 12 '09 at 22:01

@jippie You mean "eating stuff you haven't fed them?

@angelatlarge :]

5:45 PM
@angelatlarge I want to know if they enter the box or not. I is automatically locked after say 18:00 and until 07:00 next day

@jippie Huh, I see, how about a load sensor?

yeah saw that . need to investgate its usefulness and cost. I need 2 and my cats weigh only 5kg not 50

@jippie How long does it usually take for grumpy and sleepy to eat?
@jippie Doesn't matter, I think the max is 50

I will tell you once I have the statistics from the sensor

@jippie How do you declare a uint8_t datatype? #define ?
@MLM Yo!

5:55 PM
?
don't know
it just works for me

@jippie My gf wants one, but only if you add pawprint recognition, so each cat gets their own special diet.

@jippie What do you mean?

@ThePhoton I actually have something similar implemented

@jippie Like what?

working on version #2 atm

5:57 PM
@coding_corgi Typically a typedef. But to be honest I'm not sure why that's better than a #define.
for this case
@jippie How do you tell which cat is which?

@ThePhoton So I could do something like this:

easy :) they are chipped.

#define TMP_SENSOR ACD0
@jippie ! :)

@ThePhoton and I use two of these : sureflap.com

@jippie Boy, what a cute idea
@jippie Ooh ooh! Put an ir transmitter on the collar, and make it send different pulses, and the uC will figure out which cat it it!

6:00 PM
You ever get that? Fix some bugs and your code behaves worse?

@angelatlarge Yes, a lot! But usually i don't know where the bug is, so I swat around mercilessly!

@ThePhoton Just took two cardboard boxes and mounted the electronic cat flaps in them.
works as a charm

@jippie Is that where the CatGoalie (TM) is mounted?

just after 3 years the cardboard gets bad

@jippie :[

6:03 PM
@angelatlarge ?

@jippie lol

My kitty feeder box

@jippie hahahahha!

@angelatlarge that is to keep cats in the right garden
verhuisdoos = moving box

@jippie Awesome!

@abdullahkahraman made couple extra holes in the sides because they were hiding in their boxes when they got scared sometimes.

@jippie Nice. But $200 each? Is it available for $25 on E-Bay?

$200 each !? that's not what I paid for them ..

@jippie Why do they get scared, from what?

6:10 PM
@jippie There is no escape from @jippie's garden of Eden?

@jippie That's the price at the site you linked. Probably there's other vendors?
$132 on Amazon

@ThePhoton that link was the first i found when I typed the name in google.

@ThePhoton #define TMP_SENSOR ACD0 ?

@ThePhoton One of my cats will die if it eats regular food, so the flaps aren't necessarily cheap, but I did pay < $100
@ThePhoton there are similar products from other vendors too btw, though these ones are mechanically stable

@jippie This is how geeks use their knowledge, helping their kitty cats!

6:16 PM
strong
stable
sturdy
whatever

End of advertisement.

@abdullahkahraman you're just jealous that you didn't think of it yourself

@jippie lol. I am jealous of your cats

Aww!

To clarify, spiders are not on-topic here. Ever

@jippie That chat almost crashes my chrome tab

6:19 PM
@abdullahkahraman SAME!
@ThePhoton #define TMP_SENSOR ACD0 ?

just be more patient or use decent hard/software

@jippie Not the most popular chat room though, messages are like 4 days apart!

I want a cat in my home so badly

@abdullahkahraman no you don't

@abdullahkahraman take a bald one

6:24 PM
@jippie They are ugly, I don't like them

@abdullahkahraman the fur is driving me insane, so badly that I had to buy an iRobot Roomba to keep my floor tidy
@abdullahkahraman I know! but read ^^^^^^^^^^

@jippie Yeah, that is the reason I cannot have a cat in my home

which reminds me, I have to clean my vacuum cleaner

@jippie Do they work?

@jippie No you didn't, you just wanted one! ;]

6:27 PM
@coding_corgi Sorry, I thought we were talking about uint8_t. Like typedef unsigned char uint8_t or #define uint8_t unsigned char

@ThePhoton Yes, we were, how do you declare them?

@abdullahkahraman absolutely. Of course I have a hard and flat floor, that does help.
@ThePhoton no we were talking about pleasing your girlfriend

@CamilStaps Yo

6:45 PM
@angelatlarge did you play with opencv?

@coding_corgi Just like that:
typedef unsigned char uint8_t;

or
#define uint8_t unsigned char
right?

Now uint8_t is a synonym for unsigned char
@coding_corgi yes
For the #define, I'm not sure if you need some parentheses or something to avoid weird parsing in corner cases...

@ThePhoton Wait I am confused, can you show me an example?

7:02 PM
Haven't seen @CamilStaps all day, I think @coding_corgi nuked his network

@coding_corgi Like this:
typedef unsigned char uint8_t;
uint8_t x;
x = 8;;
...

@jippie lol

@jippie :), not yet, not yet... Maybe I scared his network very badly...
@ThePhoton I do everything you say right there?

7:20 PM
@ThePhoton Do I?

@coding_corgi If you want x to be a uint8 and have the value 8, yes.
And if uint8_t isn't already defined by your system headers.

@ThePhoton SO what would be port ACD0?

@coding_corgi That should be defined by your system headers. (or maybe in an "architecture" file or something)

@ThePhoton ?

@coding_corgi You shouldn't have to define it yourself. Maybe there's a file you need to #include to get the definitions. They should tell you in your compiler documentation.

7:30 PM
@ThePhoton avr-gcc?

Yes, but I don't use it, so I don't know where to look in the docs.

@coding_corgi #include <avr/io.h>
/me is out

@jippie So what would be port ACD0?

8:11 PM
It's quiet in here...

True

Charley's angels on tv

Yeah, saw this comment on YouTube which goes like this: "You fucking other people need to stop grouping Americans as one person."

8:48 PM
?

8:58 PM
@jippie Yes you do, now could you please tell me how the ports are named when assigning values to a uint8_t?
@CamilStaps Yo
