Bourbon + Ducky == Revert

3:00 AM
@RubberDuck Oh I'm to blame here... no work done in 2 whole days. Still 70-some errors in 15 files

How are you to blame for a drunk duck's revert @Mat'sMug? Pretty sure the bourbon and guitar are responsible for that.

Vodka + OJ here
I meant for the no-commits
I miss playing electric guitar. Kids blew up my amp :(

That's why I have myself a nice Palmer Electric Acoustic. =)

..besides I'd need a new guitar, my Warlock has dead nodes all over the fretboard... and my Roadstar is 15 years old and a total banana
I have an acoustic too... it just isn't the same :(
(try Master of Puppets unplugged ...lol)

3:20 AM
Lol. Fair enough.

calling it a night. at this pace I'll be able to commit in 1-2 "shifts"
going to be interesting to see how ANTLR handles multiline signatures and declarations. I think tweaking the code to work with ANTLR automagically fixes the issue with multiline instructions.

Q: Method Visible of Worksheet fails, but code runs successfully

user1283776The following line: ThisWorkbook.Sheets(vSheets(i, 1)).Visible = xlSheetVisible generates the error: Run-time error '-2147417848 (80010108)': Method 'Visible' of object '_Worksheet' failed But if I click play in the debugger, execution finishes without a problem. So the line causes my code...

Interesting.

Hi.

@Amejel Hello

@Amejel hEY THERE!

Sorry man.

3:45 PM
I was just trying to figure what's wrong with the question.

What question?
@RubberDuck Caps Lock fail FYI

@Chrismas007 Oops. sQL CASE.

The question that I ask myself when I wake up in the morning: Can someone make a living out of VBA?
I have a lighter @Phrancis

3:51 PM
@Amejel I know a ton of analysts in the food (consumer packaged goods industry) that swear by it. But they have other responsibilities as well (VBA is just a part of it).

I'm doing ISO 9001 with this company. The easiest way to collect DATA as it turns out people do not like hassle of papersheets, is to do it with ADODB and Excel.

4:04 PM
Has anybody ever read the Joel Spolsky Excel review with Bill Gates?
If not... take a read.
Skip down to the part that starts with "The next day was the big BillG review. June 30, 1992."

4:22 PM
@LynnCrumbling Awesome

ALERT: interesting question!!!!

Q: Missing VBA compiler message for wrong method name

Martin RollerConsider the following code in VBA. Sub CompileTest() Dim Ap As Application Dim Wb As Workbook Dim Ws As Worksheet Debug.Print Ap.XXX ' No compiler error Debug.Print Wb.XXX ' No compiler error Debug.Print Ws.XXX ' Compiler error End Sub When I compile this, I don't g...

If you ask me I think it's a bug. I can't explain why one throws the runtime and the other compile error

Another interesting question:
1
Q: Syntax to determine current error handling method in VBA

user1283776On any given line in my code, can I use Debug.Print() together with some other command to find out what would happen if my code would encounter an error on that line? Can I use any statement within Debug.Print to find out if the current error handling procedure is to Goto 0, Resume Next or Goto ...

> given that an On Error might be buried somewhere in my code that I cannot find.
...perhaps it's time to frakkin' clean up your code then?
2
@Chrismas007 short answer is "nope" ..long answer is "roll your own - and it's going to be ugly"
2

@Amejel I do.

@Mat'sMug It is related to this question:
1
Q: Method Visible of Worksheet fails, but code runs successfully

user1283776The following line: ThisWorkbook.Sheets(vSheets(i, 1)).Visible = xlSheetVisible generates the error: Run-time error '-2147417848 (80010108)': Method 'Visible' of object '_Worksheet' failed But if I click play in the debugger, execution finishes without a problem. So the line causes my code...

He is getting an error but it runs still.
So I suggested he might have some funky error handling
so he asked the question about determining the current error handling

4:36 PM
@Chrismas007 worksheet visibility isn't a Boolean, setting it to True won't cut it ;)

@LynnCrumbling That's a good one. I recently referenced it in an answer I think.

damn I hate VBA type mudding

@Mat'sMug That directed at my comment?

I mean, who would instinctively think an enum == Boolean?
.net has corrupted fixed my brains
2

4:44 PM
@Mat'sMug I wonder if his problem has to do with his third question floating around about using regular worksheets and chartsheets as well.

you are already spending too much time trying to understand the question
it's a chameleon case
tell the OP it's unclear what hes asking and move on
and tell me to shut up and stop being greedy in the mean time xD

@vba4all Shut up and stop being greedy.

lol
hi @vba4all

wtf
wow that's ....rather unexpected.
Public Sub VBACompilerIsMad()

    Dim app As Application
    Debug.Print app.ThisMemberDoesNotExist

    Dim wb As Workbook
    Debug.Print wb.ThisMemberDoesNotExist

End Sub

is that anything new? ...

@vba4all what's your theory on that one? quite a riddle if you ask me.
would the host application's object model be .... partially late-bound???

@vba4all I was wondering if you frequented this room, too...

Anybody know of a way to see progress towards the stackoverflow.com/help/badges/223/copy-editor badge?

Yep - activity -> suggestions revisions tab.

@LynnCrumbling well yeah i am a shared owner of this room :)

palms face. right.

@LynnCrumbling Sweet. 461... Get that last 39 by cleaning up

5:29 PM
@Chrismas007 nice! getting close!

@LynnCrumbling Actually that doesn't work... I think that included your own edits
@LynnCrumbling Badge wiki specifically says edits on posts that aren't yours

@Chrismas007 Hrmmm. Lemme see if there's a SEDE query for that.
Ok...
hover over the progress bar
"badge progress" div expands.

@LynnCrumbling Thanks that worked... With it was all in one place tho.

@Chrismas007 Nice!

Q: Repeating Code in a Chart VBA

@StackExchange O! HAI THERE!
Nevermind. Asking about code not written yet.

ADODB.Connection apparently has the same behavior:
0
A: Missing VBA compiler message for wrong method name

KekuSemauWell, it's just a hypothesis, but here it is: I recall that you can call a stored procedure on an ADODB.Connection object like a native method. (The examples for this on several msdn sites look oddly messed up, no idea why). So there is a mechanism of something like 'anonymous/dynamic methods' i...

@Mat'sMug Which part?

the part about calling SP's as native ADODB.Connection methods, and ADO making it's "best guess" at converting the parameter types

Ohhh look at that...
That's cool, but I'd shred that in a CR.

me too

Dim cnn As New ADODB.Connection
...
'Your stored procedure name and any parameters.
cnn. "parameter"

6:17 PM
> Use an ADODB.Command, for Heaven's sake!

That ^

actually, don't. Use an SqlCommand instead.
@Chrismas007 I think this comment can be deleted now

@Mat'sMug Yea done

@RubberDuck how is this broken?

Aren't the Range assignments illegal?

6:24 PM
> Set XVALUES = Range("E" & Cells(3, 3), "E" & Cells(4, 3))

exactly..

^^ that?

hey @Vogel612

yes that... I'd be prepared to bet you can't mix strings and Cells that way to select a valid range
Oh hiya @LynnCrumbling

they're looking at the ActiveSheet and work off the default members, making it hard-to-parse code, but I don't think it's broken... depends on what the data looks like, but it could work I think.

6:25 PM
waait wait wait... Do I know you from life-hacks?

Tavern ;)

I think this post could benefit a screenshot showing some sample data; it would make it easier to understand what's special about C3 & C4. — Mat's Mug 7 secs ago

(but yes, been on life-hacks once)

ahh.. green face with bowler

ganz genau.

6:28 PM
@Mat'sMug @Vogel612 Those would work if there is a number value in for example Cells(3, 3) since that will return the default .Value although he doesn't specify.

ohhh.. that makes more sense...

It is bad programming tho

yup. @Chrismas007 you're reviewing it?

vote retracted

@Mat'sMug No just commenting that the code could work
:-D

6:29 PM
voted to leave open
@Chrismas007 come on, you'll get some CR rep!

^^ that.

I don't have time to review anything until tonight..
bbl

well I'm out of here again ;)
see you around!

6:50 PM
@Vogel612 ciao!

@Mat'sMug As far as I can tell, it's not. But it is asking about code not yet implemented.
He's implying he'd like to know how to dynamically run it on different worksheets.
And doesn't know how.

7:05 PM
gah
The only problem is that the code works, but not as intended - if your code doesn't do what you want it to be doing, then it's not ready for a peer review (and trust me, it needs one! ;)... you need to pass a Worksheet object as a parameter to your procedure, and then have some code that will iterate the sheets you're interested in, and call the above Sub with the worksheet parameter. On this site answers won't change what the code is doing, we'll give you hints on what to change to better how the code is doing what it does. Asking to change what the code does is off-topic :( — Mat's Mug 23 secs ago
@RubberDuck it's a shame to have vote to close this question.
in The 2nd Monitor, 58 secs ago, by Mat's Mug
@200_success @Jamal (@rolfl?) is it really asking to change what the code is doing? Would it be off-topic if the OP was edited to say "I have this code, it works well against the active sheet. How could it be made more extensible, so that I could reuse it against any worksheet?"
^^ thoughts?

7:36 PM
I think it's a shame to close it too @Mat'sMug.
But it doesn't work as intended.

FWIW, I've retracted my close vote. This is working code in need for a peer review, with an opportunity for extensibility - it's just a matter of defining what exactly is "works as intended" in this case; it does work, only it requires a manual process. I will post an answer later, for sure! — Mat's Mug 4 mins ago
@RubberDuck that depends solely on interpretation of the OP. I'm leaving it open.
ugh. OP edited the post......... and gives your close vote some weight @RubberDuck

@Mat'sMug answer it before it gets closed...

ugh.. got work to do here!

Chrismas007VBA questions that meet the Stack Overflow criteria should be posted on Stack Overflow or migrated to Stack Overflow. I added some stats too

9:15 PM
@RubberDuck I need some help here... I have two String SSIS variables, and I'm trying to populate them with the result of this query, using an "Execute SQL Task" (Control Flow):
SELECT cast(MIN(CalendarDate) as varchar) MinDate, cast(MAX(CalendarDate) as varchar) MaxDate FROM dwd.FiscalCalendars;
if I make them dates and remove the cast, I get a date in december 1899 (0); so I figured I'd use strings... and I get nothing, the variables remain empty. WTF?

9:29 PM
Why are you casting to varchar?
@Mat'sMug ^

ugh. I expected the "Variables" list to show me their values... so I sent them into a bogus table with another SQL Task... and I see the correct values there. I guess it's fine then. Casting to varchar because struggling to make it work with dates
oh damn
it works if I cast the datetime values to.... datetime
wow
that's plain stupid
SELECT cast(MIN(CalendarDate) as datetime) MinDate, cast(MAX(CalendarDate) as datetime) MaxDate FROM dwd.FiscalCalendars;
if I don't cast it, SSIS sees the two values as strings...
CalendarDate is DateTime of course
thanks anyway! (yay, works with actual dates)
@RubberDuck eh, how's that? ^^
(staging data flow for order headers)

9:44 PM
@Mat'sMug I hate SSIS.....

lol
DQ rule #1 filters for a specific company code (basically filters out test data); #2 rejects orders with an order date before the first date in the fiscal calendars table; #3 rejects orders with an order date after the last date in the fiscal calendars table, and #4 rejects order headers without an order number - all that is defined and documented in the [DQ] database. I'll use this information to produce meta-reports and notifications :)
