Goes over/ subpar art and poetry
is #6

I don't understand why you're just giving me hints but okay :P

Don't want to spoil it for you :P
(and I don't want to post partial answers)

you can put answers in comments and I can add them in
(or here)

So... no hinting, just the answer? :P (wasn't sure whether you wanted to try yourself)

honestly, I don't mind either way - I'm just half asleep right now, so I may be a bit slow

12:08 AM
Ah k, well (ART)* + VERSES = TRAVERSES then

ah - I had thought of *ART --> TRA...
but kept trying to get TRACES OUT or something similar

Ah, that sort of going over

the rest are 5s (and maybe a 3 if OUT is wrong, which it almost certainly is)

I was wondering if there's a bird starting with OUT (with "and" cluing letters) but I can't think of one

Huh, someone downvoted that puzzle. No idea why.
There's TOUCAN, but that's very iffy.
(Plus it wouldn't fit.)

12:17 AM
Do we have enough to start getting cross letters?

Nope. First of all, we don't know where each clue is.
This is the grid so far.
But the two going through the center can be switched.
And we have all of the 3s except one that starts with B.

If you swap the two and stick ABYSS to TRAVERSES it becomes a 3 letter word ending in S

Hm? Swapping the two would have ABYSS in the same place
ohh, sticking it to the A

Yeah the A, should have clarified

As for "character at the end...", I was thinking something like OMEGA
but I can't see any last letters from (site?)*
(anagrams of SITE with an extra letter added that's not at the front or back: edits efits emits etuis exist exits idest inset islet istle items satie shite sites sithe sixte skite smite spite sties stile stime stipe stire stive suite teils tices tides tiers tiges tikes tiles times tines tires toise tries)
alternatively, "character at the end" could be R, but then I'm not sure what to do with "disorganized site"
Hey Emrakul!

Hey Deusovi!

12:44 AM
@Deusovi MEGA (.co.nz) could be a disorganised site I guess, if a bit weird. Not convinced that's right though

Ehhh. It's possible.

1:09 AM
More like pretty convinced that's not right :P Hmm having trouble for the rest
ZED is in DISORGANIZED hmm
Lots of extraneous words for hidden fodder though

1:32 AM
Saw that too, disregarded it

2:12 AM
ZOO?

2:24 AM
That sounds more like it actually

2:50 AM
@Deusovi (ping in case you're still awake and around :P)

What are you working on?

Cryptic Crossword Sudoku

3:33 AM
#8 sounds like VEINS, if a bit morbid
#2 is definitely SEIZE (16 in French)
(which would join with ZOO)
#9 could be EMU[lsion]? Maybe
Only saying that assuming VEINS is correct, since it would need a 3 letter starting with E
#10 is HAM in C[u]P

@Rubio what do you think of this one ^^ anyway?

downvoted and VTCed. whee.

6:25 AM
How do the cryptic crossword sudokus work?

They tell you if you read them.
The first worked by giving you the enumerations and the numbers of the starting squares.
The second, the enumerations were the starting squares, and the grid was symmetric.

The riddle above, should we get rid of it?
(@Deus, I mean)

Let it be closed first.

6:41 AM
Oh, closed, that's what I meant. Anyway, with cryptic clues, what would you consider to be a valid 'joining' word?
(Is there something on this? I couldn't find it in your guide)

Something that indicates the relationship between the two halves.

So i.e. and is would be valid but seems like and could be would be invalid, because they aren't connecting the same word?

There are two main groups: conjunctions suggesting some form of equality (and, or, and likewise...) and one-way relationships ([wordplay] leads to [def], [def] from [wordplay], [wordplay] for [def]...)
Yeah, I wouldn't use either "seems like" or "could be" as a connector.

Ah, thanks!

(also, the "two groups" isn't a formal rule, just something I've picked up - I can't think of anything that breaks it though)

6:49 AM
And one-way would always be leading from wordplay to def, I assume.

Well, you could have definition first. But it should be explicitly telling you something along the lines of "this group of words, when interpreted correctly, will lead you to this definition"
so you could have "[def] is derived from [wp]", for instance
(also, I wouldn't use one-way-ish things for double defs)

7:04 AM
@Deusovi I'm not sure what sort of things we are supposed to tell the mods about, but this user has a provocative name. Is this relevant?

TheGreatEscaperHAISU is a portmanteau of three Japanese words - 'hairu', to enter, 'su', number, and 'hausu', an English borrow word meaning house, of course. Q: I am an instrument, but you do not play me

n_palumI'm learning to make more complex riddles, but until then I enjoy these. (Title too)     I hold something of which many desire more.     I can use water, the stars and even sand.     I have been made and remade more times than most know. What am I?
