@AJHenderson there's 'brutal punishment' in the form of economic sanctions, and there's wholesale slaughter of an entire race (amongst millions of others) for purely ideological reasons. I know what I'd call evil.

@ElendilTheTall right, but the genocide wasnt really known about at the time. The thought process as I understand it was that they thought it was like our camps for the Japanese
After the fact we can say it was
But at the time it was much more gray

most German's didn't think they were fighting to be able to commit mass genocide, they thought they were fighting economic oppression of an entire people group
to them, it was also black and white
or seemed that way at the time
it's easy to point out one side as better or worse after the fact, but the reality on the ground at the time is rarely that clear. And even when you have a best case argument, like say, trying to remove an oppressive ruler in Iraq, you have the peripheral greedy issues like access to oil
things are very, very rarely (never) clean cut in politics, let alone war
and the justification and the reason are rarely the same
