12:36 AM
A lower form of humour than a pun would be my guess. Who'd'a thunk it was possible?

1:12 AM
@StanRogers yeah, I gathered it was Ken being ... "funny".
Unfortunately for him, it comes off as someone hungry for attention who otherwise has no qualities worth paying attention to.
In that way, I guess it fits right in with the rest of his site.

@Instantkamera — that's an odd use of that word. "Funny". Never thought of it as meaning "mind-blowingly sophomoric" before. Good coinage. Mind if I use it in the same sort of context?

Be my guest ;)

1:51 AM
@Instantkamera Don't forget downright disgusting and outrageously childish as well... -.-
That guy never left the frat. T,T

2:38 AM
I must have missed something.

Hi @EvanKrall

how's it going @jrista

pretty good, you?
well, pretty good, but exhausted. I spent the whole day at Chatfield Lake today photographing birds.

reasonably well
went to the Cherry Blossom festival in SF's Japantown center today
it was underwhelming
how'd the bird photos turn out?

not sure yet
64 gigs worth, so still importing :P
completely filled four 16GB CF cards
Pretty poor lighting today, so I'm not sure how many really good keepers there will be
Although, I did get to test my camera's weather sealing in rain, sleet, snow, AND hail today. :)
the 7D is a beast

2:48 AM
64gigs of shooting?
forgive, that seems excessive. How many frames is that?

oh...about 600 per card
lots of action shooting, which can be up to 24 frames per sequence, only a few of which are likely to be keepers
so out of 2400 shots, there are probably only about 200-250 actual distinct scenes

2400 shots, wow. Is that common, for personal portfolio/collection?

well, I'm teaching myself

wedding I can see, but Im hoping you cull a lot of that, or your storage needs are insane.

I'm a bit heavy on the trigger, so I probably take 8-12 shots when I could do with 3-6
I have a lot of storage...6TB in a NAS device, and another 4TB or so on my computer
as well as a 240Gb SSD where my lightroom catalogs live
my real space concern is actually the CF cards

2:55 AM
where are the backups?

I could probably shoot a lot more than 60GB in an 8-10 hour day
the NAS has the backups, and I periodically burn that to BluRay

daymn
that's a lot of shooting

yeah
LOT of hiking around through thickets and barely visible trails as well

RSI on your shutter finger? ;)

I am actually really bummed

2:56 AM
you didnt get what you wanted

I had filled all my cards, and was putting my camera in my car when I believe what was an Osprey flew by, VERY close overhead, with a nice fat fish in its talons
that would have been the best shot of the day, and I had no more CF space :'''''(

curses

it was also at that moment, the only moment, that the sun decided to shine below the clouds as it was almost sunset
so it was perfect lighting too

damn uncooperative nature

and I HAD NO FRIGGIN CF CARDS!! :'''(
but, now I know there are osprey out there
so I'll go back

2:58 AM
actually, it sounds like nature was 100% cooperative, just at the wrong time

heh, yeah
it was a nasty day though
there were times when it was only about 34 degrees, and with windchill it felt like the mid 20's
it sleeted, snowed, and once it hailed dime-size hail

'Twas ever thus. In the bad old days, you would have had nothing but a roll of Kodachrome 40T (tungsten) in the bag, no CC filter, and twilight lighting in shade. Oh, and the ospreys won't be there if they know you're looking for them.

the rest of the day it rained
@StanRogers Haha! So true....the birds are psychic like that...
and thank god for digital, eh!
I love that my camera will automatically adjust ISO anywhere from 100 to 3200
without that, and advanced AF, I'd be so screwed

Oh, you betcha. I can't count the number of shots missed changing film (or simply reloading). But I still hear the cash register in my head every time I press the shutter release.

@jrista man, that's cold as shit, where are you in the states that would still be that cold? Ill assume not Alaska, so ... somewhere in the mountains?

3:03 AM
Colorado
right off the slopes of the rockies
its been really weird here

figures

some days we'll have 80 degree weather, the next few days it'll be snowing

it has been weird everywhere
same here, in march when we should have still had snow, it was 25C

@StanRogers yup. I never shot film...at least not seriously. I couldn't imagine doing that today.

@jrista AF? Nah—you'd be surprised how good you can get at follow-focusing when you have to. I sure was.

3:05 AM
@Instantkamera yeah, it was wicked cold. I tromped through a bunch of thickets to get out to the end of this little peninsula to photograph some pelicans that were hangin out on a sandbar close to shore. The wind was blasting, it was sleeting, and it was freakin COLD.

Probably helps that viewfinders were larger/better

Before I could even sneak around the last few trees, the pelicans all hopped up at the same time, floated in the air, then landed about 15 feet farther off shore. The nice close-up head shots I was hoping for, for which I'd gone through a lot of bone-freezing, wind-whipping grief, was suddenly dashed.

@jrista lol, I have my bedroom window open to let in the breeze :D
@jrista the bastards

yeah...turned out there was a guy fishing who was stomping around out there, and when the wind hit, he started whooping and hollering....dumbass

Leave it to your fellow man to parade around like an elephant

3:10 AM
I had the great good fortune of having about $20K/annum discretionary when I took up the sport, and I'm almost ashamed to say I spent almost all of it on photography (mostly film, paper and processing).

@StanRogers almost ;)

Man, this chat thing gets pretty asynchronous with Parkinson's.

@StanRogers WOW O..o
^--- Badass Pelican Brotha Bravin the Friggin Fury!

@StanRogers yeah it tends to do, I try to direct reply to keep the context, but sometimes Im just too damn lazy

That was the wind-driven sleet.

3:13 AM
@jrista not the elements I would be inclined to bring my gear into.

@StanRogers Yeah, it can get pretty out of sync. You can directly reply to any line. Click the down arrow to the left when you point to one to reply-to.

@Instantkamera It's a disease, I tells ya. (Photography, not Parkinson's so much.)

@StanRogers lol

@StanRogers lol

@Instantkamera Yeah! The 7D really impressed me with how it slogged through the weather today. It was constantly soaked, and never skipped a beat.

3:14 AM
@jrista wow, that's some serious trust in the "weather sealed" feature on the brochure. What lenses?

@jrista Clicking on little things is badness in my book (although I somehow seem to manage it in Photoshop—maybe it's a badly skewed set of priorities that goes right to the spinal column).

I only used the 100-400 L
which isn't actually rated as weather sealed, and is push-pull, so I always wiped it off before changing focal length
it seems to have held up extremely well too, though
I wish there was a better hand-holdable IS lens that was affordable

That reminds me way too much of standing on deck in the mid-Atlantic. Looks like good weather for still life to me.

Canon announced a 200-400 f/4 with integrated 1.4x TC. I'd LOVE to have that, but its like 11 grand :(
@StanRogers Military thing?

@jrista Yep. Canadian Forces (I wore a light blue suit and worked on aircraft, but I never saw an Air Force base in my entire career. Navy helicopters and Army communications school intsructor).

3:21 AM
@Instantkamera: I also "linger" too long on a given subject. I get some great shots and poses within the first few bursts, but I stick around and keep shooting. I can probably learn to move on sooner, which would likely mean fewer shots in a day.
@StanRogers Carrier??

@StanRogers Where did you work out of?

@jrista Nah. We gave those up when I was about twelve. Destroyer escorts and antisubmarine warfare helicopters.

@StanRogers Funny you are Canadian, we have (or had) a well-known Stan Rogers (as you are likely aware) :)

Ah, gocha. Yeah, I imagine you saw weather that was a LOT worse than I saw today. ;) The atlantic can be really nasty.

@jrista Easy, it's not that bad :D instantkamera is a Nova Scotian boy, born and raised.

3:26 AM
I'm the other 100K Google hits in the 3.1M. We're actually related if you go far enough back, and the family seems to have a sort of prohibition on names other than Stan, Lew, Bob and Harry. (I have no idea where Garnet and Nathan got permission.)

Yeah, well, the farther north you go, the nastier it gets. ;)
@StanRogers hehe

@StanRogers hey, 100K ain't half bad ;)

It sure ain't fun chipping ice off the railings in April. Oddly, I never got to go south except in the middle of summer.
I'm (or, rather was) sort of a phenomenon in the Lotus Notes programming world. World-famous in a very, very small world, that's me.

@jrista I've been far enough, thanks. Our lobster season is not during what you would call "the good season"

Woot!
Sometimes mashing the shutter button does wonders:

3:32 AM
I miss the hell out of the ocean though. This southern ontario lakes garbage is ... it's just foul

That guy flew right over head, maybe 6 feet above me.

@jrista Now that's a keeper.

Those are the hardest shots, since you have to swing the camera in a huge arc

is that a wad of chewing gum?
:D

@StanRogers Aye. Thats strait out of camera, too! :D
Thats probably the best out of camera bird shot I've ever had.
@Instantkamera Its a friggin juggernaught of the sky, baby!

3:33 AM
straight out as in jpg?

You never really realize how BIG a pelican is until one flies overhead and you realize its bigger than you!
@Instantkamera well, no, shot as RAW, but I just exported that puppy as-is.

@jrista lol. I meant what appears to be in his bill.

@Instantkamera Watch your language, sir.

@Instantkamera Oh...well....that would be a gonad. :P (They have sex organs on their bills.... O..o)

@StanRogers ;)
@jrista TIL

3:35 AM
?
not familiar with that acronym...

Today I Learned ...

lol
yup...

One less question I have for pelicans.se :D

The next shot was almost out of frame...but maybe in square aspect it might still be a keeper:

it's pretty well-lit from the underside without blowing the BG

3:38 AM
yeah...I think that was because of spot metering

well metered

the pre and post shots of that sequence are not quite as well lit
and the all seem to be blurry
not sure I can really frame that one right
I might see if Photoshops puppetmaster feature can allow me to move it higher in the frame
those were the only two shots that came out at all, though

Don't be afraid to "invent" sky... nobody can tell if you noise it right.

The wings make these shots for me. they are almost translucent in areas, it seems. Like I can see the meat and bone in them.

Mmmm... Suicide Pelican Wings...

3:42 AM
@StanRogers yeah, that would be my last resort. I played with photoshops puppetmaster tool once though...it filled in the "hole" automatically and did a superb job, allowing me to freely move the cut object around.

homer drooling noises

@StanRogers haha
@Instantkamera yeah! I LOVE bird shots with the sun showing through their wings...
^-- This is how most of the shots were...dull and gray sky
actually, that one could probably stand a 1-stop exposure boost

Well gents, I'm off to the land of slumber

night IK

Have a good 'un. My Mom lets me stay up a lot later.

3:47 AM
it's like 3 hours past my bedtime. :D
yes, that's EST
though I often pretend it's atlantic to make myself feel better. Im more of a 6am guy than a 12am guy.

Never did understand morning people... especially those annoying ones with the uniforms and stripes.

Love it. I dont even need coffee
night y'all

@StanRogers lol
night @Instantkamera

@jrista That's one of those annoying "so close" images. Good, yes, and you can pump up the volume to make it better, but it would be freakin' iconic if there were just a hairline separation between the crest and the left wing. If only they'd take direction...

@StanRogers exactly!
I think I found a better one...hang on, let me fix the exposure on it...

4:00 AM
I'm shivering with antici...

man, LR4 has come to a CRAWL
Adobe really botched this release...
I love the little tuft of feathers they have on the crest

...pation! The tuft's good, but I like the sort of implied awkwardness in the wing position. It's so stereotypically pelican (never mind that they can soar gracefully in real life).

yeah! I had never really seen pelicans fly that much before...they really do just glide on air...
They do indeed have some awkward wing positions at times, though. I love that shot, not quite as much as the first one directly overhead, but this one is pretty good.
@StanRogers: Hey, many thanks for the input. :) Glad you liked the shots. Sadly, I'm one of those annoying early risers (not by choice...the damn robins forced me into it!! Damn themm!!) I gotta hit the sack too. Take care!

My problem's the opposite—urban raccoons and crackheads. It's prime time for them right about now. Have a good night.

4:44 AM
morning :)
this article made me laugh... the author got humor :D
