if a big player makes a major technology change, it could definitely shake things up. Right now, nobody has anything tech-wise that gives them a clear advantage
if the sony translucent mirror solved the heat issue and reduced the light-loss some more - that could be some neat technology. a non-moving mirror is a definite speed and simplicity advantage
@jrista ya, thats ALOT of money
wow, i didn't realize the k-5 sensor was rated above the 1D series sensor
I think its actually a combination of the K-5 sensor and its image processing chip
I was chatting with John C. a while back, and he mentioned that for a while, Pentax had to use very noisy sensors from some other manufacturer. That forced them to solve their noise problem with their image processor.
They had to be competitive, so their noise removal ended up REALLY good. Now that they use better sensors (I think from sony) they have one of the lowest noise floors of any camera.
it could be a huge growth market, initially entered by the people who can see past all the existing "it has to be DSLR" and gain the benefits of an EVIL-type camera
@rfusca that would be awesome
I rarely ever use my viewfinder
I think the only time I do is when I am photographing birds or active wildlife
but even then, the viewfinder is SO tiny, its barely useful
I am not sure what to think about Sony. I've tried quite a few of their cameras in local stores....they all feel really cheaply built. Almost everything seems to be plastic, focusing rings don't feel anywhere close to as smooth as canon's do, buttons feel cheap, etc.
I hear a lot of people LOVE their sony's....but I can't ever really get a clear answer as to why.
@mattdm - I've started to wonder if you have some sort of autotag/edit script that run for your user. I think you missed out in life from not being a newspaper editor
I'm a semi-active participant in the Fedora project — that's what I use on my desktop systems. For work, it's CentOS/RHEL. We might switch to Scientific Linux, another Red Hat derivative.
@rfusca - I was an early adopter and so I had the sensor stain issue on my first K-5, but Pentax just replaced it which gave me back a lot of shutter actuations... Other than that, both of the cameras have been great.
@rfusca well, they kind of dropped the ball on the 6.0 release, especially in communication. (still not out yet.)
Huh. @jrista's stops mnemonic answer is almost exactly the same as mine but got 4 upvotes whereas mine got none. I don't care but I'm curious. I bet it's the use of bold. :)
@mattdm The use of bold is a powerful tool that will garner approval from those people who appreciate answers written in a way that lets you get to the point quickly.
@rfusca I do like it quite a lot, but I would caution anyone with past DSLR experience that they may not like the lack of focus points in the viewfinder.
@Sean In my day job I work in a very technical environment but have to communicate to very non technical executives everyday. If I didn't use bold and bulleted lists in emails, they would not read a single thing I send to them.
So after our debate yesterday on tripods, i went home to open up to a new issue of "landscape photographer" and a big article about how awesome IS + high ISO is, but we still need tripods for landscapes :-) @jrista will be happy
it contained very little substance for that claim. Just something along the lines of how it is the best thing to improve a landscape photographers work
they did bring up some good arguments against a tripod though
I've just gotten into the habit of marking everything. I do all kinds of photos for my son's Scout troop, and I've seen my photos showing up as Facebook profile pics, etc.
I figure I might as well at least slap my name on 'em.
I'm a bigger fan of the watermarks that come as part of the boarder, or have a solid background on the bottom/side or similar, then the text right on top of the images
but obviously we all do it a different way
@rfusca - I have a shot from that 70-200 straight out of the camera at full res for you
And the ones that are bringing in lots of users without providing good answers (because it's off-topic, or not a good stack-exchange fit, or whatever), should be closed, because we're not helping people by tricking them into visiting the site.
@JayLancePhotography threw my hat in the ring, certaintly not my best work. But most of my stuff is either A. really similar to something else thats already been done, B. In a ratio that doesn't crop well to that, or C. Just sucks :D
i mean heck, by just uploading, i'm tied for first lol
