@jrista It's funny you say that... I've actually been wrestling with that very same question ("do I still belong here?") these last couple of weeks as well... In general due to being frustrated with many of the same sorts of things you're seeing. Of course the difference is that I can simply choose to fade into the background (as I more-or-less have been doing), but as a Mod... It's probably a little bit tougher to do.

Yeah.
I guess I'll wait and see.
SE is fundamentally a tech network
and tech-savvy people are the types who generally populate these forums
If the long-term trend is to treat PhotoSE like any other tech, math, or science site, then I probably don't belong here.
I think such a long-term trend would be fairly sad to see, as I don't think it would benefit PhotoSE...but on a general level people don't seem to like answering the dumb questions new photographers inevitably ask.
But its the dumb questions of new photographers that seem fundamental to a photography forum.

1 hour later…
2:12 AM
Lensbaby is pretty intriguing. Its kind of like its all about the imperfections of lenses, rather than the perfection of lenses.

2:34 AM
@JayLancePhotography @jrista So if there's frustration at the tech stuff, is there something we can do to encourage the more artistic side to come through? I'd seed more artistic questions, but frankly, I think i'm too ignorant about what to ask there, but I wish I wasn't.

I am not really sure.
Maybe we can draw out the artistic side by providing more artistically driven answers to as many questions that support it?

thats a good idea

how to strip a deck
bleh, sorry

ahahaha

my keyboard is not working well these days
its a 2.4ghz wireless
but I think that band is used by a LOT of electronics

2:36 AM
instead of just - 'this is how exposure works' - highlight how to use exposure creatively instead of just the technical balance that it is

heh, my deck needs refinishing
@rfusca yeah!
I'm not really sure if that will work to draw out more creative questions, but at the very least, we can help teach tech-savvy photographers to be more artistic.

hmmm, i think its something we need to find a way to encourage
if we drive them to be artist, they'll like come here with artistic questions

hopefully anyway
the more I do photography, the more of others photography I see, the more I understand how little the technology really matters

true

I've seen some truly amazing photos by people who have ZERO technical skill and use a crappy point and shoot.
and you wonder what they could do if they had a full DSLR

2:42 AM
thats true to a certain point - but there's certainly technical limitations to the equipment you have given certain situations like low light action

sure
but I think thats something that you can pick up as well
or come to a site like ours and ask questions

sure

but having the tech know-how isn't ever a replacement for raw artistic talent
heh...I think my media PC takes random screenshots of the videos I watch
then includes them in the photo screen saver
its the weirdest thing and I can't figure out how to turn it off
I've got this amazing set of astrophotography that the media center screensaver cycles through
then suddenly it lands on some completely random shot from one of my videos
like neo in the matrix when he is stretched back dodging bullets

lol

I KNOW I don'
t have that picture anywhere, and it never appeared before today, but I watched that a few days ago.

2:44 AM
@jrista thats very true

meh...technology
I have this one shot

i'm switching to better gear, not really to be tech obessed, but because I want to switch brands for costs reason and I can get a better tech out of it...ya know?

of the ISS about a mile below the space shuttle
and earth below the ISS
absolutely amazing shot

have you seen the recent show of the shuttle docking with the station?

@rfusca totally. Your switching to something that better services your goals. Thats definitely a part of photography, and why I like equipment recommendation questions.
But thats just a starting point or a switching point.
@rfusca show??

2:46 AM
right
err dang I can't type
the recent photo lol

oh, darn

i'm trying to find it

lol, I was getting all hyped up about a new show

haha

man, I would LOVE to photograph earth with a high tech camera from space
can you imagine all the things you could see up there
in just one day for that matter

2:47 AM
ya

I wouldn't necessarily need to be in space either
if I could just play with a high tech camera on a satellite for a couple days
africa, alaska, australia
hmm...all the places I want to go start with A

lol ya
hahaha

lol, arctic, antarctic :P

antartica
lol

ah, Hawaii...theres an H

2:49 AM
ya
asia ?

yup!
I'd love to photograph one of those monasteries way up in the Himalayas
heh, every interesting place on earth starts with an A, it seems
even America

if i didn't have a family, being a travel photog would be AWESOME

yeah...
its not as easy as it sounds
costs a fortune

i know
i'd need to be rich :)

and the job that funds your travel always comes with strings attached...you can't go away for more than a week, we need you to be here for product release X
can't take any vacations until after July
yadda yadda

2:53 AM
oh, ya, i mean a travel photog for fun, not for a magazine or something

yeah, rich would be nice
@rfusca those are things my company tells me
I'm literally not allowed to take a vacation until after july right now

yup

they overextended, started too many darn projects

yup, ditto, only August for me

lol

2:54 AM
they committed to a project, then told me i'm running it and I can't take off until August when its done

such a bummer....omg...I have to wait 10 seconds before I can post now!! Blerghcharg!

?

this chat throttles you if you type too much

thats for sure
its annoying

its too bad denver isn't a waterfront city

2:56 AM
ya

I've been trying to start taking photographs of city stuff

star stare is comming up in CO
ya, i don't have any interesting city places around here

buildings, long-exposure traffic on highways, overpasses, etc., city scapes reflected in water
most of it comes out far from what I envisioned though

oh ya?

@rfusca is that one of those all-night stargazing/astrophotography gettogethers?
@rfusca yeah, compositionally I'm missing something

2:58 AM
@jrista yup, one of the largest with some of the darkest skies

I've seen some pretty cool long exposures of traffic, where you just see the light trails
@rfusca you going to be there?

i wish, no...somebody from our club is going though

where exactly is it?
oh, rocky mountain star stare

ya, i'm not sure exactly where

oh, wow
gardner, co
thats way down there

3:00 AM
ic

its like 2/3rds of the state away
but buried in the mountains

ya

wow, some people have some BIG telescopes

yup
its impressive to look through some of them

have you looked through that huge telescope at your society?

3:04 AM
we have several members who bring big ones
18"+
yes

how deep can it get?

don't know

hmm

we've got one member with a scope over 24", but i've not seen it yet. its a whole multiple person job to setup apparently

good grief
thats huge

3:09 AM
yup
he's got a trailer to move it around

I wonder how much something that big costs

quite a bit

Its like $6000 to get an 11" celestron cassegrain

i'm sure he made everything but the mirror though - its the only economical way to do it

that puppy is at least twice as big, probably more like three times as large to accommodate the weight of such a mirror
hmm
yeah, I guess they have pretty strait forward design

3:11 AM
anything over 12" and mostly their homemade - the quality is better and its cheaper I've been told

so you can just buy a mirror?

oh definitely
alot of big city clubs even have their own mirror grinding eq
REALLY big clubs even have their own mirror coating eq

I guess you would need a couple, the main mirror and the secondary
wow
I wonder how big colorado's club is
I know its pretty big out here
there are some good skies once you get out of the city or into the mountains

ya, we've got good skies once you get into the nat'l forest

where are you again? Arkansas?

3:13 AM
there's at least 4 clubs in arkansas - sw, nw, west and central
yup
i think west and central is the largest
west ar shares with OK
and some TX
lots of dark skies in southern TX

I need to get involved with the local club

you should definitely do it...even without a scope its rewarding

yeah
and I've loved astronomy pretty much my whole life

in 2 months I can apply for observatory status and then I can use the club eq whenever I want

its just that only recently have I had any money to spend on it
@rfusca sweet

3:15 AM
yup

I assume you have to be a regular member for a while?

6 months, then be trained and pass a "i know what i'm doing" test

gocha

then you get a key and a code to in

guess they have to protect their investment

3:17 AM
its not really an 'investment', most of the eq is donated, but they don't want to have to replace it or lose the educational value

ah
Windows 8 looks pretty sweet:

i mean first year dues are 20 and after that 50 - so its a steal of a deal for access to a safe dark site and good eq

a new UI style, based on their WP7 design
looks like an awesome UI for tablets

i tolerate that I need to use windows for my photo work - there's nothing to match LR for linux, but even 7, I just don't like

check out their new UI at that link
I will say, since switching from iPhone to WP7, I'm extremely happy
their new approach to UI design is refreshing

3:20 AM
ya, definitely different

switching from Windows Mobile 6 to iPhone was pretty nice, but WP7 has quite a few things that make iOS seem pretty archaic already

thats cool

have you ever considered Aperture 3 on Mac OS?
Aperture is pretty damn nice

ya, i've considered it, but its an expensive route

its the ONE app that keeps tugging at me to get a mac
yeah, very expensive route :(

3:21 AM
and i've trash talked apple waaaaaaaaaaaay too much to do it now ;)

lol
me too
and I really don't like the mac UI
I've had to use it on many occasions
and it is not as productive as windows
there are so, so many small things about windows that I am so used to
like the flexibility of its file system browser (and file system), all the nice little text editing features that pretty much every standard windows app has (i.e. skip word, cut/paste line, scroll with keyboard but maintain cursor position, etc.)

prolly more like 'you're' not as productive on it as windows

every time I use a Java app, use a mac, or use linux, the lack of those kinds of little things just drive me bonkers

sure

but all that aside...aperture is pretty amazing
I'm not sure its even as capable as LR
but its got such a nice workflow, the lack of any feature wouldn't bother me much, I don't think

3:26 AM
sure

2 hours later…
5:11 AM
@jrista I find mac's text navigation to be way more intuitive than windows'
option-left or right skips words
much like ctrl-left/right on windows

@EvanKrall have you finished your tracker yet

but then cmd-left and cmd-right go to the beginning or end of the line
@rfusca nope, you?

getting closer, but not yet
i know you thinking i'm nutz for switching to pentax, but i'm excited ;)

no, you definitely get an upgrade to your camera body
well, maybe sensor-wise you get a downgrade; not sure
but AF motor, stabilization, etc are all nice

i really don't think that
sensor wise

5:15 AM
k-r? k-x?

oh, it looks like i'm gonna end up k-5 and a reduced number of lenses...prolly just one prime and work my way back up in lenses

nice
now that's an upgrade

i like shooting with the prime anways, over 90% of my shots were with the 50mm
and i often wanted something slightly wider, so i'm thinking the 40mm limited pancake
ya
i'm hoping it works out like that
i'll know by next week

wait, which were your other two lenses?

kit lens and a cheapo 70-300 4-5.6

5:19 AM
ah right

so i'm not really missed out on some great piece of glass

yeah definitely

i'll just get a great camera and a great prime and then work on saving up for some more primes - maybe pick up some of that old glass super cheap

primes are fun
I need to pick up a 50 at some point, I still don't have one =P

ya, my 50 was great

5:24 AM
but then I'd really like to get a 1.4, so all of the sudden it's not a really cheap lens anymore
not horrible, as far as lenses go, but not cheap

does anyone besides canon offer f/1.2 50's and 85's?

nikon has a MF 50/1.2

for that matter, does anyone else offer anything wider than f/1.4 for a modern lens?

not afaik
nikon's 50 is an AIS lenrs

there's an older pentax 50 1.2

5:31 AM
seems like Zeiss has some 1.3 t-stop video lenses
not exactly certain what a t-stop is...
transmission stop...
hmm
measurement of actual light transmission through a lens...most cinematography lenses are rated in T-Stops
t-stops are always larger than f-stops
so I guess a 1.3 t-stop lens has to be brighter than f/1.3

i read something on a nikon site the other week about how alot of people don't feel the need for below f/2 as much anymore because ISO noise has gotten so good and the additional DoF isn't that pronounced

the ISO bit makes sense...but I think the difference in DOF is noticable. Comparing an f/1.4 with an f/2 shot with my 50 is definitely a visible difference

visible sure, but pronounced enough to miss it on most shots...eh, i'm not so sure
i rarely shot below 2 because the DoF was too shallow for me

if I were going to get a 1.2 lens it would definitely be for the DoF
though the extra stop over my 1.8 would be appreciated in some situations
I wonder how the (relatively) cheapo 85 f/1.4 primes perform

5:49 AM
supposedly excellent
which specific one

ken rockwell did a review of the vivitar, I think, but it's ken rockwell
thom hogan hasn't reviewed any of them

oh THOSE
the rokinon got a good review somewhere I remember, because I was thinking about getting it at one point

which were you thinking of?

but the advice kept resounding "don't try manual focus on that small of a viewfinder" and when I did with the sigma...'they' were right
the second you linked
@EvanKrall here's some pics from the pentax mount version

I wonder how annoying the manual focus would get

5:58 AM
depends on a few things i suppose...will the d7000 focus confirm and/or focus trap with it?
considering its a portrait lens...i'd not shy away from manual focus..its not like you're gonna be shooting sports with it

not sure about focus trap
should confirm though at least

6:21 AM
"Upgrading your Dropbox to Pro 50 or 100 lets you:
Get to your entire photo and video collection from anywhere. "
I don't think they realize how big my entire photo and video collection is.

lol

100 gigs is 12.5 8gig memory cards
pretty easy to fill that over the course of a few months

indeed

wow, I feel so ripped off

?

6:28 AM
went to walgreens to get this film processed and scanned to CD
and the pictures are JPEGs around 1mb apiece, at 1215x1800px

lol awesome

a whopping 2MP

go back and ask for the real cd
;)
ya, when we went and got a picture with santa they were advertising a high quality digital print too and it was like a whopping 2MP too

probably cheaper to rent a santa suit and have grandpa wear it

seriously
and better pic
it was TERRIBLE
i was rather pissed about it

6:32 AM
lets see how my $50 scanner/printer combo does
supposedly it can do 4800 dpi

6:45 AM
it is 2011; computers should not lock up.

lol
its 2011 and computers are still computers....they lock up

man, this single 1.29x1.74" area that I have scanned is wreaking all sorts of havoc on my computer
first Image capture was at almost a gig of memory

lol

now Aperture is at 1.16 gigs
image capture is STILL not responding

its the dreaded scan virus...its an image that as it gets scanned into memory manifests as a horrible, horrible virus
otherwise known as the 'nobody-should-scan-at-4800-dpi' virus

7:00 AM
lol

7:19 AM
I don't think flatbed scanners are meant for scanning negatives
a backlight would probably work waaay better
suddenly I'm starting to appreciate the 2MP scans

@EvanKrall lol
hahaha

dust
so much dust

yup

man I'm glad we live in a digital era

yup

7:48 AM
hey wow
that's a lot better

?
lol, rent a Leica M9 for 3 days is over $200

gotta pay the big bucks to look classy
I never understood camera rental prices
they seem way too high

that certainly does

I guess they're not so bad

renting pentax gear, alot of it is <$20 for a weekend
lens-wise

7:58 AM
where are you looking?

cameras, though, seem ridiculous
$95/3 days for a k-5?

ya, cameras always seem high to rent

it's $204 to rent a D3 for 3 days
$262 for the d3s, $340 for the d3x
er

craziness
only time i see me renting a body is if i got dragged into doing a wedding

8:01 AM
yeah

and i do mean dragged

oh man, I think my scanner is lying about how high resolution it can do

hahaha
now thats a camera with weatherproofing

8:28 AM
I'm not even sure I want to know

lol

I have a lens that can do 50 f/2.8 and a lens that can do 100 f/2.8... now I've just got to find a nice subject and a nice background

@EvanKrall get something with a busy background so it'll be easier to tell

yeah
my desk is pretty messy, that could work
but I'm not sure I want the world to know how messy my desk is

lol
if its properly blurred out, we'd never know ;)

8:33 AM
there's not enough subject-background distance in the world to blur my messy desk enough

hahaha

hmm
I have an idea
I need a subject though

anything, a pencil even...
this makes me want to cry
i can't imagine setting my camera there

is that a "look at how weather sealed my camera is" shot, or a "look at the oopsie I made" shot

the first

8:38 AM
he's also putting a lot of trust into his bag

they're sealed lenses too
but yes, he is

for some reason I think the sealing only works when your lens is attached to something
I guess the lens caps might work
also, there's a flash in there

i would think a lens cap would reasonably seal
ya, the flash would be toast for sure

ok, time to go take a very strange photo

lol
time to go to bed
@EvanKrall ciao

8 hours later…
4:51 PM
@jrista — I think you could make the from/to to/from part in your snow answer more understandable by separating that out into two (longer) clauses. Not a big deal, just sayin'. (Voting up the answer either way!)

4 hours later…
9:00 PM
5 days without my camera so far...i think i'm in withdrawal

9:20 PM
haha

:)
