Frown. Is it worth me throwing together quick-and-dirty answers (e.g. to "how do we date fossils") even though it's way outside my specialty and mostly what I'll be saying is stuff about U-series decay and the ways in which corals exhibit steady U-series decay from the point of death? (Ditto 14C for [much] more recent stuff...)
I suppose the anwer is "yes" in the interests of promoting discussion/more&better answers, provided I'm not saying actively wrong stuff. Hmm. In any case, I think this much rambling means it is past my bedtime - will check in with answers in t'morning :-)

kaberett, perhaps but sometimes unanswered questions are more appealing to experts

@Mew "unanswered questions are more appealing to experts"... that's not my experience, my experience is that questions have a window of time for which an answer is of use, and for which SE expects questions to get answered; hence the stat on % of questions answered. Beyond that, "2.5 answers per question is good, only 1 answer per question needs some work."

12:56 PM
@Mew I would say Qs without accepted answers are more appealing, or when I know I can provide a better answer.

Right, in any case there's been an answer on the one I was staring at that I think I can improve on, so I guess I'll do that then.
