This room is for discussing plot points and other things related to my on going RPG Campaigns. First and foremost my D&D 4e campaign set in a custom world... as such there will likely be lots of world building discussions here. I welcome any and all questions about my world.

Quesiton 1: Can you describe your world? :)

Shall I give the long-ish version?
The setting is the planet Osrynn. It is an Earth-like planet in a binary solar system. Osrynn has 3 moons (with out getting too sciencey here the moons are oriented in such a manner that the tides are similar to that of Earth). There are 5 major continents: Dellyn (creation site of the humans), Grimaz (creation site of the Dwarves), Seere (creation site of the Elves), Firon (home to many, but most prominent natives races are Minotaur and Shifters),
and finally Kem'jon Akal (creation site of Orcs and Gnomes)
Currently the D&D 4e campaign is focused on Firon. Humans discovered it a few hundred years ago and originally were friendly with the Minotaur and Shifter people. After a short while Elves and Dwarves showed up and allied themselves with the humans. They then began quarreling with the Minotaur when the Minotaur objected to the amount of land the colonists were taking.
Map of Firon:
The mountains in the north are primarly Dwarven settlements, the jungles in the middle are mostly elven. Inbetween the Dwarves and Elves is mostly human (although you can find almost any civilized races there except orcs). South of the Elven jungles is primarily Orcsish territory and their allies which include certain factions of Minotaur and Shifters
The current King of Firons allied races is a human by the name of Leighton Witten. When he was in the army fighting Minotaurs he realized that they could be worked with and become a strong ally if both sides made an effort to work together. When he was named king he appointed members of his Army platoon Barons of various holds around the human dominated lands in Northern Firon.
Aldborogh is the seat of the Kingdom, where Leighton lives (big castle on the east coast of the map, on a very small out cropping). West-North-West of Aldborogh is Blackcrest, where Baron Kendrick lives (main ally of the Players' Party and Minotaur sympathizer)

@MC_Hambone Dude - that map is awesome, how did you make it?

Along the boarder of the elven jungles the main holds are (from north to south) Governed by Baron Thomson, Baron Prichard, and the southern most keep is named Ravensblood Hollow and Governed by Baron Phillip [last name being re-written]
@InbarRose if you look in the description of the map I link to the relevant brush sets I used in Photoshop. I started with hand drawn outlines of the world, scanned them into the computer then used a wacom tablet to trace the coast line and used custom brushes to mark forests and cities and mountains.
Note, Baron Thomson and Baron Prichard do not have named holds as of yet, but they are both neutral to the plight of the minotaur and follow the kings orders.
Baron Alvior Steelehart governs the hold in the north near the dwarven mountains. Also of an unnamed hold, but he is a friend to the Minotaurs.
other than that... there is a lake in the Northern mountains that feeds most of the rivers in the northern half of Firon. It is a source of powerful magic and possibly contains some powerful artifacts or underwater dungeon/ruined city...

Question - "shifters" means shape shifters?
Meaning there is a civilization of them? like.. hundreds/thousands? They populate the land mass? This means people know much about them.

The general feel of the game is "standard" D&D fair I guess.... medieval europe sword and sorcery, with magic being fairly prominent in the world (magic items are not super rare)
@InbarRose Shifters, as in the 4e race Shifter
not Changelings/Doppelgangers

I don't know 4e very much

12:57 PM
@MC_Hambone Interesting.

I make special note of them as one of the players in our Game is a Shifter Rogue... Also the Minotaur presence is due to a player who is a Minotaurs Shaman

So Changelings/Doppelgangers are still rare - but the concept of shape shifting is well known.

Originally my world building project was for a comic book set in the modern age but heavily influenced with magic... what i think present day earth would be like if a world like D&D portrays grew into the modern age... SO i rolled the time line back for the D&D game... hence building in things specifically for the players
@InbarRose Correct, thought we do have a changeling in the party, who hasnt told anyone about his true nature yet

@MC_Hambone Fascinating.

there are a few things I would like to have the players get into that will show up in the comic. for instance in the comic Gnomes are an under ground race of blind, agressive mole-like people. in the game they are the normal D&D gnomes
if possible I'd like to get my players over to Kem'jon Akal wher ethe majority of gnomes are, and accidentally cause a natural disaster that forces the gnomes under ground. Time+radiation+being underground=future gnomes that are blind and agressive and rarely ever surface.... though adventurers that explore their ruined cities are often attacked
let's seee what else can I write about the world that is already established...
ummm dragonborn are usually tribal and remain with same colored dragonborn, and most tribes are rules by an actual dragon that matches their color. most tribes live on the islands that dot the world
The southern boarder of the Elven jungle is currently being attacked by the Orcs. There is even a human port city that was razed to the ground because the city's head Holy Man turned out to be a double Agent really working for the orcs (reasons yet unknown as it's from a character background story)

1:10 PM
I have an idea.
You wanted this world to evolve into a "modern world"
So - what is in the modern world?
I assume it's mostly humans? Some other races scattered around? But barely any magical creatures/fantastical creatures anymore? And magic is more rare?
(Correct me if I am wrong)

Aldborogh (probably has gone through a name change or 2) is like modern day new york city, its very diverse culturally. Magic is very much still alive but is highly fragmented. If you have magic you generally only control 1 area, like if you control fire you only control fire.
magical beasts still exist, infact the first issue of the story involves a custom version of the spriggan

Well - you could have a religious order which is trying to destroy all magical beasts or whatever for purity reasons or something.
And have that be in your current story.

it's definitely something that would be fun to play around with. I adopted the D&D pantheon for my game because the world was originally "atheist"... not by conscious choice tho. I just neglected to create the Gods :D
But that is certainly something I can do to accomodate any religious sect.... which really should be present in the world of the comic

Heh.

i guess it's just a by product of my own lack of religion :D I am not of the mindset to believe in that stuff IRL, which is why I find it fun to play these games. I guess that just slipped my mind when I was world building lol

1:20 PM
@MC_Hambone You could make the world more spiritual than religious.
The gods are simply beings with extremely powerful divine power.
And people pray to them for protection/blessing.

in my defense, I would probably have ended up writing a story line down the road that would have required a religious group, and would have made the pantheon at that point.... our world is constantly growing and changing... I can't realistically expect my world building project to ever be "done" :D

But people could also be very spiritual.

@InbarRose or they could have all been killed, and now people pray to them with no real proof they can help
Eventually in the game i want the players to thwart an attempt to resurrect Tiamat

Indeed.
I recall this.

(and possibly resurrect Bahamut)
so gods are killable in this world :D
Also, and it's probably not even going to be necessary since new comics rarely get published, is there any concern about legality discussing things that could affect a future business venture? I appreciate your guys help, but I don't want people suing me in the future for using their ideas.... again I am not overly worred about this since most of the talk will be about the RPG games... but I have family members that always bring this kinda junk up when I talk about my career goals :D
man i feel silly even mentioning that...

1:35 PM
First of all, it's not silly.
Secondly - Anything I chose to post here is completely public access.
Of course - if I write here "I am going to write a comic about X" and then you say "wow that's a cool idea" and then you write a comic about X.. Well.. I am not a lawyer or anything so I have no idea.... But since that is not the case.. it doesn't really matter

I am not sure who that works either...

If I have an idea like that Blood Hollow city I gave you earlier. And you use it for your story - that is fine since we are discussing your storry.

You know what.. I just don't know.
So let me just say this: You can use any ideas I have for yourself
There, it's said.
Let me clarify that for the lawyers.

I would assume that if you can show a dated record of you broadcasting the idea before the person produces the work (and if they can be reasonably linked to that post you made) then you might have some grounds for legal action...
I guess I can just put out a disclaimer, but I feel weird about that

1:40 PM
Anything I post in the Public Domain without explicitly stating otherwise is (as far as I am concerned) able to be used freely by the public.

I mean I havent even mentioned this stuff to my players yet and they obviously have much more impact on the world :D

Look, I don't think there is any kind of copywriting laws about stories.
All stories are similar.
If my story has a magical ring am I stealing from Tolkein?

thats fair
like I said it's all just worry that I have inherited from family members more familiar with the legal system than I
Anyway, i need to vacate my computer area for a while. Ask any other questions about Osrynn you please (i neglected to mention the names of the suns and the moons, and the othe rplanets in the solar system, for example) I have a vague story about the universe's creation, and if you ask a question I dont have an answer ready for.... that's great! just helps flesh out the world, right? :D
anyway AFK for a while

I don't think anyone can trademark/register/copyright a story.
Well.. A story idea obviously if I copy/paste LOTR I will get sued.
