12:14 AM
@Ben back over here.

Ben
Hath returned

img11.deviantart.net/6e34/i/2014/096/1/b/… < as to Hans triumphing over Elsa and Anna btw

Ben
Nice haha

12:30 AM
I wonder what the actual odds of Hans beating Jherala are...:o

Ben
Alright, lets do some practice rolls: First Sneak checks, then attack rolls (if successful), then another stealth check to hide again - react as necessary

:)

Ben
Ok so first up... Stealth roll (to sneak up on Jherala)
+5
d20

Ben
Now your opposing check

12:37 AM
turns out I should have been rolling Perc not Insight oops
+2
d20

Ben
Ah! Dang haha.

*Jherala easily spots Hans this time around...

Ben
Hans takes a disengage, and then hides in the next room
d20

12:38 AM
d20

Ben
Much better haha

*Jherala loses Hans and tries to find him, looking in a few rooms in turn...

Ben
Alright another sneak up on Jherala...
d20

Ben
12:38 AM
+5 = 18

d20

*Jherala doesn't notice Hans approaching this time...

Ben
*Hans smirks as he thrust the rapier toward her...
2d20

Ben
12:40 AM
+3 is only 12... dang

*Jherala spins as the rapier glances off her splintmail...

Ben
Oh wait... That's +5 isn't it? Dex + Proficiency?
Still not enough though... You've got at AC of 18?

yes, AC 18

Ben
Alright then... I think one more try might determine the total outcome.
*He once again ducks away, into another close room
d20

12:42 AM
d20 at a +2
d20

Ben
Both on 17 haha
What happens there?

not sure...

Ben
@Miniman might know the anser
@Shalvenay flip a coin? (d4)? You go odds I go evens?

I can look at my PHB in a moment here

Ben
12:46 AM
Ah ok

the situation stays the same as it was before the contest

> If the contest results in a tie, the situation remains the same as it was before the contest.

Ben
Ok, so what does that mean?

@Ben What was the contest?
You both rolled d20s without saying why.

@Miniman stealthing up vs. someone trying to spot
(sorry about that :)

12:51 AM
@Shalvenay Then since you weren't hidden before, you're not hidden now.

Ben
Ah fair enough.
Well that's lame :P

@Miniman that makes sense :) and is what I was thinking based on my reading as well

Ben
Looks like it's your tun then @Shalvenay

*Jherala enters, and almost immediately looks over to Hans. She goes for a slash at him...
(attacking, d20+6)
d20

12:53 AM
(damage at a +4)
2d6

*Jherala's blade connects with Hans' leg, cutting a large gash in his thigh...

Ben
*Hans needs this to work. Facing Her head on is not going to work in his favor, especially not with that cleaver of a sword...
He disengages, then hides once more in the next room
d20

Ben
+5 =14
(Hans is on 10 hp btw)

12:55 AM
10

Ben
Wait... no I already did that haha

@Ben Btw, do you not have any ranged weapons?

Ben
(Your perception check)
@Miniman no, I don't
A rapier and two daggers

@Ben Daggers are a ranged weapon...

*Jherala chases after Hans once again...

12:57 AM
And that way you wouldn't have to make 2 stealth checks every time you wanted to attack.

(perc at a +2)

Ben
Ahh i thought that throwing knoves were a specific type of weapon

d20

*Jherala enters the room, facing Hans once again (is he hiding by the door, or somewhere else this time?)

Ben
12:58 AM
@Miniman Would I get the advantage and sneak attack bonus on that attack?

@Ben Yep, assuming you made one stealth check.

Ben
@Shalvenay By the door... It was a bit obvious :P

:P

Ben
@Miniman Well that might change up the strategy a bit haha

*Jherala brings her greatsword down on Hans once again....
(attack, d20+6)
d20

1:00 AM
9

(damage, 2d6+4)
2d6

*Jherala manages to leave a small gash in his arm this time, the tip of her blade skating off his leathers

Ben
*Hans managed to awkwardly twist out of the way, but it was not enough.

@Ben You also have less HP than you should.
(Rolled 1st level HP instead of taking max.)

1:01 AM
@Miniman aaah
actually, he's fine -- he rolled an 8 for that anyway :P

Ben
*Hans is getting frustrated now, he ducks out of the room, once again looking for somewhere to hide...
d20

Ben
pff

(at a +2)
d20

1:03 AM
*Jherala chases him again, and once more catches up to him...

@Shalvenay I mean, if you're ok with having 17 HP instead of the 24 you should, sure.

@Miniman ...24?

Ben
@miniman where's the extra 7 hp come from?

@Ben Well, it's obviously ridiculous to roll for 3 levels of HP when one of them was meant to be automatically max, then just accept it because you happened to roll max on one of the dice.
Especially when the other 2 rolls were a 1 and a 2.
24 is what you'd get if you had taken the average.
I'm just saying, you guys are selling this Hans guy seriously short.

Ben
Yeah the dice really haven't worked in his favor.

1:08 AM
Especially combined with dealing 1d8 + 3 instead of 3d6 + 3.
@Ben My point is that it's not really the dice that are making him lose here.

Ben
You've lost me again...

@Miniman eh, how should he be getting advantage on his attack rolls?

@Ben Sneak attacking with a thrown dagger as opposed to attacking with a rapier.
@Shalvenay Only having to make one stealth check instead of 2.

Ben
A dagger is a d4? And a sneak attack with a rapier is d8 + 2d6?

@Miniman aaah. I think we'll have to run it from the top :) and yeah, daggers are d4 so a thrown dagger sneak attack would be d4+2d6+3 for him

1:10 AM
@Ben Oops, thought it was d6 for some reason.
@Ben But the real point is that you haven't been getting sneak attack, and you really should've.

Ben
Ooook... Alright I follow now

@Ben lets run it from the top again once I get back from dinner alright?

@Ben I just don't want anyone getting turned off rogues because they seem weak when they aren't really, yanno?

Ben
And @Shalvenay do we wanna boost his hp up to 24?

@Ben sure.

Ben
1:12 AM
@Shalvenay Alrighty :)

@Ben same setup, or a different setup?

Ben
@Miniman no, I do understand Rogues, and they do get some strong hits in... It's just in this situation, there's less to distract the target... that's half the reason why this isn't working aout as well :P
@Shalvenay We can discuss that when you get back :)

@Ben alrighty

Ben
@Miniman, for example my first thought was to "call the guards". Even with just one other distraction, this would have gone very differently :P

@Ben yeah, Jherala would been in very serious trouble had even one other guard showed up

1:45 AM
back from dinner
so...do we want the same start as before, with Hans catching Jherala trying to listen in on him...?

Ben
Is that what you meant by setup?

@Ben yes :)

Ben
Ah ok. Yeah, unless you could think of anything else?

@Ben we can go with that again
so ...take 2 :D
*Jherala is standing near the end of one of the great hall's side-halls, listening to Hans talking...

Ben
(How does she reveal herself? Is she trying to hide from Hans as she listens in?)

1:54 AM
@Ben yeah -- she's trying to hide from Hans (want a Stealth check?)
(or do we want to assume she's already hidden?)

Ben
(I think a Stealth check is in order)

(Stealth at +0)
d20

Ben
vs Perception at +2 (+0 WIS, but ha Proficiency)
d20

Ben
1:55 AM
*Hans stops for a second... he seems to have hear something...
*Then he sneezes, and continues on

*Jherala listens there until Hans finishes his conversation and dismisses whoever he's talking to...

Ben
*Hans pours himself a drink...
*He makes himself comfortable in a chair by the hearth

@Ben Jherala steps out from where she's standing, scroll in hand. "I have a...summons for you, sir." Her voice is calm and collected.

Ben
Deception?

...no deception, as that's what she's actually trying to do :)

Ben
2:01 AM
Lol alright.
*Hans looks puzzled. He recognizes her from the Grand Hall a few weeks ago. She arrived shortly after the death of Elsa
*He stands and walks forward. "From who?" *He stops a few feet from her

*Jherala continues "The Queen of Light wishes to see you in her court."

Ben
* Hans looks around. "I'm sorry I don't have time. I have other... matters to attend to. Please give her my apologies."

*Jherala shakes her head, holding the scroll out for him to take "I'm sure the Queen of Light will be more than happy to make you some time..."
*She gives him an almost-sweet smile along with this.

Ben
*Hans looks around again... Slightly frustrated, he comes and takes the scroll. "Thankyou. I will look at this as soon as I have time. You are dismissed."
*He looks around again as he heads back to his seat

*Jherala turns to head back and try to hide once more...(rolling Stealth at +0 again)

Ben
vs Perception at +2
d20

Ben
*Hans doesn't react. But he can hear Jherala's armour clicking and scraping by the door.
*He carefully looks at the scroll. (What does he see?)

The scroll is written in what looks to be some sort of fey script, although oddly enough, for some reason, he can read the words, albeit not make sense of the incantation they form.
(does he recognize it as fey -- and what are his attitudes towards fey, for that matter?)

Ben
(I don't belive so..? Elvish and Undercommon are the ones I'm thinking might be relevant?

2:14 AM
(Elvish...it's probably the closest to fey scripts. lets have him make a History roll to see if he can figure out if it's fey in origin I suppose)

Ben
(As for his attitudes, he's effectively an atheist :P)

(heheh.)

Ben
History at +2
d20

(and I'll say he's able to figure it out, if only from the tales he's been told about fey)

Ben
2:16 AM
*Hans has a general idea of what this might be. Since he can hear Jherala by the door, he's beginning to see what might be happening here...
*He walks up to the door, and stops on the other side
"Psst! Are you still there?"

*Jherala opens the door and nods "Yes. Is there a problem, sir?" Her voice is polite and sweet.

Ben
*Hans seems desparate and a little on edge "Shh!!" He pushes her back outside, but stays inside

*Jherala takes one step backwards, but keeps the door open. "Go on, sir..."

Ben
"I'm sorry, but I need to be discreet. There are eyes everywhere... Every since the death of the Queen, I have been watched..."
"I realize that you may perceive me to be one of the bad guys, but I'm not. I'm attempting to find the real killers, and the only way I can do that is from the inside"
(Deception?)

(go for it)

*She replies with a smile "Ah...best of luck with that quest. However, this concerns a matter much greater than the Queen's death..."

Ben
"I could use your help, if you would be willing to assist?"

2:23 AM
*She asks politely "That assistance would entail...?"

Ben
"I have a list of names. These men need to be dealt with"
*He rattles off a few names

*She shakes her head and smiles "The Queen of Light has given me...a greater role to fulfill than that of a mercenary lackey."

Ben
"These men are the leaders of the Assassins Guild here. If we can take them out - remove them the whole Guild can be removed!"

(are they really, and would she have a way of knowing otherwise?)

Ben
(Nah it's just a random bunch of names, but unless she has a knowledge of the Assassin's Guild, I can't see why she would)

2:30 AM
*She smiles "I'll take it under advisement. Now, as to the issue of the summons...?"
(deception this time -- she's probably not trusting him even that much :P)
(at +3)

(opposed insight on your end?)

Ben
Insight +0
d20

(what does he know/has he been told about fey btw? just a bunch of tales of pranksters and such? or has he read some of the...harder-core material in that section?)

Ben
2:33 AM
*Hans smiles back. "I'm sorry but at this point I really need to watch out. I'll have a proper look when I am not being so closely watched."
(Rumours and tales and such... He's done a little bit of side-reading, but nothing too major)

(hrm...would he reveal to Jherala that he doesn't believe the scroll can actually do anything, or is he trying to deceive her into believing that he does believe the fey courts exist when he thinks they don't?)

Ben
(At this point he's sort of trying to get her to leave, so he can deal with her as she goes)
"May I walk you out?"

(while she's trying to get him to either read it in her presence, or reveal to her somehow that he doesn't believe the scroll has any power over him)
(so, Deception roll?)

Ben
(Btw he still does have the scroll in hand)

(yeah)

*She smiles sweetly "Sure, that will not be a problem."

Ben
*He smiles back, and offers her to lead the way.

*She begins to head for the exit....

Ben
*Hans follows. For now, he needs to bide his time, wait for the opportune moment

2:44 AM
*She continues to walk along at a smooth clip "Thank you for your time, and do keep in mind if you do not surrender yourself to the Queen of Light...you will be headed to her court, one way or another."

Ben
"I'm sorry, is that a threat?" *Before She can turn around, Hans slips into a hiding spot. (Stealth at +5(

(The attack then gives away his position... Yes?)

*Jherala takes the thrown dagger in the back of the neck, horizontally, and staggers severely a few steps forward, managing to turn around with the dagger in her neck. She reaches into her pack and produces a wand of Magic Missiles as he spots where the dagger came from, growling "Coward....!" (yes)
(the wand has a blue/purple crystal on one end)
(my turn?)

Ben
Yep

*Jherala takes the metal rod, with the blue flame-like crystal on its end, and points it in Hans' direction, growling in Draconic...

(ah yeah -- we completely forgot about that with Hans)

So +5, then an additional +2 for stealth

Ben
*Hans retreats to the other side of the room (your turn)

*Jherala slips the dagger into her belt, taking her holy symbol in one hand and pointing at him with the other. She growls several words in Draconic followed by a single word in Common. "Read!"

Ben
so no outcome?

I'll have to look at the saving throw rules brb

Ben
Wanna get a second opinion just to make sure?

@Ben nah.

Ben
(Ouch... That's Hans done again haha)

3:23 AM
(yup...RP it :)

Ben
*3 hits, directly to the centre of his chest, Hans is blasted down the hallway. He slides to a stop.

*Jherala puts the wand and sword away, letting go of her spell. She pulls the knife out of her neck carefully with one hand, putting her hand on her holy symbol with the other as she channels healing energy into the wound....
(end of RP...Jherala got very lucky the second sneak-attack didn't land, because she would be on the brink of death if not dead if it landed)

Ben
Indeed haha. That was a much better round for Hans. Especially that crit XD

(want to do one more take on this, with guards showing up at Hans' beck and call?)

Ben
Hmm maybe. I'll have to take a quick break first though. Gotta hang my washing
