@PF4Public It would help if you'd post the link to the question.

@JennyD Sure, here it is: serverfault.com/questions/669340
I just thought I'd not bother anyone with the link if no one is up to O:-)

@PF4Public What is it you're wondering about?
I can't judge either of the answers; obviously your answer was one that solved the issue for you. You as the poster are the only person who can and should decide which answer is the best one. Beyond that, everyone has a right to their opinion and to their vote.

@JennyD So that it is OK to post my own answer, rather than editing the one that was already given, but which is not satisfactory to accept?

@PF4Public Yes. I'm not familiar with the u-boot system, but from your description this certainly looks like a combination of hardware and software error, and the first answer tells you things you can try in order to find the solution, rather than the actual solution.
If I'd noticed that first answer at the time, I might have flagged it as "not an answer", even.
I mean, that the error is caused by a combination of hardware and software. Not that either in itself has an error (though it certainly seems that u-boot doesn't handle this particular hardware/network issue very well).
Your answer describes a solution. That is better than an answer that is basically a list of things to test.
As for the downvote - well, some people don't like losing the "accepted answer" points. I don't really see internet points as very valuable and have a hard time understanding that mindset.

I'd say it is mostly because of u-boot's greatly simplified networking, which under certain circumstances may lead to packet loss as it turned out, but anyway your conclusion is absolutely correct in that it is being an issue in a very specific hardware/software combination.
My concern was that if I have a better answer after doing my own tests (which I had to perform by myself since I got answer from u-boot community similar to "worksforme") it would be plainly rude to add and accept my answer without first commenting on the existing answer, justifying on why I had to answer myself instead of accepting existing answer. But I didn't expect so much anger from him :( Thus I was wondering if I did something wrong...
In fact I got my answer several month after asking here, but didn't post it. Until recently I had to get back to that very hardware, so I decided to post my answer in case this would be of use to someone in similar situation.
By "asking here" I mean asking that question at serverfault website. Not the chat ofcourse.
