Well - I'm done testing. I dont think this io pattern is fixable via buffering optimization in xfs. But is in ext4.

@ewwhite I should point out that ext4 is not that much better, about 50% better.
If the files simply disappear / get discard (which appears to be the case) it might be worth sticking that wrk directory on tmpfs (providing whole dir is empty now) seeing as the files are not persistent anyway.

the dir always has crap in it.
my newer systems continue to use XFS... but on top of ZFS
and I've made everything much more complicated.
 
I suppose getting an SSD will reduce the length of that job 4 or 5 times. Might become limited by a different resource but that might be helpful.

I can't find confirmation on this anywhere, and thought it was a known fact: 'When using lease reservations on a dhcp server, and there are no more IPs left to hand out, if a machine that has a reservation isn't connected, the dhcp server will give away that reserved address.' I had a /21 for wireless that regularly filled up with leases and most of the APs had reservations. At least a few were out for servicing at any time and no one ever got a reserved IP

They both make the same high-level point, but for people that believe it is the literal word of god as written - how can they reconcile that?
Either it's allegory meant to show that god created everything and we're in his kingdom or it's literal and the bible stops making sense in chapter 2 of the first book

@Iain I'd point out its demonstrably unhealthy for society to tolerate a sizeable minority of people to hold extreme religious views. Not due to "terrorism" but because the majority of the worlds society dont think that way, those cultures become irrelevent or uncompetitive.

@MDMoore313 the point I was making is that most of the people that take a literal interpretation of the bible use the passages about Soddom and Gommorah as justification to discriminate against gay people, but then they selectively ignore directives like the passage from deuteronomy that tell you to kill your disobedient children in front of the whole town. Or to not wear clothes of moxed fabrics. Or to not plant two different kinds of seeds in the same field.
 
Theres clearly contradictions in the bible (multiple interpretations of the resurrection event, multiple intepretations of what happens to judas). I find these bigger problems to the "literary perfection" of the bible. STILL, it doesn't immediately make someone review their religious beliefs. It weakens a section of their belief but its probably going to get reinforced by other stuff (prayer, testimony) etc.

@MDMarra okay, just making sure. I know I'm in the minority but there have been plenty of homosexuals that have given their life to Christ. It's important to remember that Christians are not under the O.T. law, but under Grace. The N.T. makes that clear. Re: S&G, I use that and other text as a basis that God does not approve of homosexuality, but it's definitely not just there

I understand that the NT superseded the OT and that many sects recognize things like evolution and are accepting of gays. My problem is with the people that choose to use a literal interpretation of the bible to justify things like teaching their children that evolution isn't real and that the earth is 6000 years old

My only beef with mainstream science is why they try to stomp on the Word. I can't speak for all Christians, I don't have a problem with 'modern' science except when they try to contradict the Word (apparently vice versa is true for some of them, and that's fine). Some scientists deny that it takes faith to believe in some of their theories, when in fact it does
