call it "banana" doesn't have to be root, as long you have full permissions to the instance.

@MichaelHampton fucking finance industry

I was in HFT when Knight blew up

Oh my...

@MarkHenderson Was it at least six figures American?

And @ first they blamed the network guys, I told if your market feeds blew up at least you would not execute stupid shit in 2 minutes.

12:08 AM
@JoelESalas Yes

At least they pay well enough for you to be in a broom closet all day

@JoelESalas I wasn't going to uproot my family and move them to the coldest place on earth for anything less
@JoelESalas Hah, yeah I'd heard about that

Then Facebook IPO followed and our startup got closed. -)))

lol puppet
[root@vmhost2 puppet]# pwd
/var/lib/puppet/lib/puppet

I heard you like the puppet. Let me give you a puppet to puppet your puppet.
I still prefer puppet or chef to cfengine2/3 any day.

A: Should I set a mysql root password?

Joel E SalasActually that's not the only way to get in. Is your web application perfectly secure? (The correct answer is always "No.") So yes, you do have a channel by which someone can get in, and it's the actual web service you're running. If someone gets in, by default they can't look at the .myd files. ...

12:29 AM
@DanilaLadner We call that the Foreman.
@ewwhite OK, try this one. blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2013/08/29/…

@MichaelHampton like the kitties hiding in the wheel well of my rental car...

The shark on the subway, though...

@ewwhite Someone reset the clock?
Dear New York Times Reader,

As you may be aware, on Tuesday, access to our Web site was impacted by a malicious attack at our domain name registrar.

This resulted in many users being redirected to a bad domain address instead of NYTimes.com.

We resolved the issue by early Tuesday evening but there have been some lingering problems due to some Internet Service Providers not yet updating our Domain Name System records.

We fully expect that all access will be restored by the end of the day today and we deeply regret any inconvenience this may have caused.

Our bad

1:12 AM
@MichaelHampton Yeah, I implemented Foreman when it is still was quite buggy and work with Ohad through lots of issues.
i had 8 different collocation sites with each having puppet/foreman setup
dhcp, tftp servers with foreman proxies

@jscott And why were you browsing for adult literature on CL in the first place?

@MarkHenderson I do not think it is literature, not that it makes any difference.

@MarkHenderson It was under "general". But that person has been hoarding ggw stuff since, possibly, 1997. They're aware of the Internet (hence posting on CL) but they don't know how worthless what they have is.

@DanilaLadner Hey those are some very entertaining DVD jewel cases!

Nope, those are audiovisual works.

1:54 AM
Can it all be shipped USPS Media Mail?

yeah through IMAP

@DanilaLadner Hah, what exploiting drunk teenage girls with the promise of a free t-shirt and free booze to get them to make out with eachother whilst you plaster the footage all over the internet, ruining their lives as soon as someone matches their face with a name so you can profit off their actions whilst passing on nothing of value to them? That's not literature? I don't want to live on this planet any more
@jscott Who even buys that much porn anyway?
Or buys full stop

"hoarding"

Indeed. With all the free porn out there, who buys it now?

@MichaelHampton Apparently the masses of free gonzo porn on xvids/redtube/youporn/etc are having a serious impact on the traditional producers of porn

1:56 AM
Well shouldn't they be a little smarter?

@MarkHenderson Those porn producers should have known that we don't want to hear crappy 70's music and fake orgasms.

I mean can you image girls from "2 girls 1 cup", having a suburb house by now, a banker husband, a dog, 2 cars and 3 years old son?

See also: rochester.craigslist.org/for/4034452813.html -- Reasons why I love/hate CL.

@jscott You'll be surprised, bur someone will buy it.

@DanilaLadner Indeed, hence "love/hate"

2:01 AM
@DanilaLadner No; I imagine they're probably junkies looking for their next score, or dead. Also, I never saw that video, only heard it described

I've never seen either. Most likely, meth ate them up by now.

I have seen 2 girls 1 cup. I..... don't recommend it.

Funny, I replied for remote side job "deployment/build" thought was Jenkins/Maven/Ant stuff, turned out to be a desktop builds gig.

I got downvoted on something and now my rep is no longer divisible by 5 and it's destroying my obsessive compulsive brain.

@RyanRies I think you also earn -1 for down voting answers

@jscott Ahh yes I keep forgetting about that... It should take me about 0.4 seconds to find 3 downvote-worthy answers

Nothing pisses me off quite as much as thumbnails that, when clicked, pop up images that are the exact same size as the thumbnail. >:|

in LinkedIn of hot chick?

@DanilaLadner Well that's one example I guess :P

But I agree with you.

If you've ever wanted to know how bad PHP really is see the above link.

@Jacob You could do that in any language, not just PHP

3:20 AM
@MarkHenderson Hey, I'm trying to rag on PHP here; stop fighting my argument with logic

@Jacob If you make such a call shell_exec("sudo useradd -p $encpass -g groupname -s /bin/bash $username"); I agree with Mark it will be terrible from any wrapper lanuage, will it be python, ruby, perl, e.t.c.

@DanilaLadner You never give up a good chance to hate on PHP even if it isn't its fault...

To be honest I saw some indian kernel devs while creating some kernel module were getting MAC ADDR of the nic card from within C code using "ifconfig", so nothing is surpising to me anymore.

Does that count as 'code reuse'?

@Jacob Sure but you need to make sure your insults have integrity
I'm all about integrity when ragging on anything
And yes, PHP is teh sweaty underballs of languages
I love this though:

"You sanitize your input, right?"
"I do not. What does this mean exactly and why should I do it?"

3:29 AM
@MarkHenderson Condoms
That's how you sanitize your input
I'll be here all week folks

@RyanRies Not really, you do not go from kernel space to user space to find a mac addr.

@DanilaLadner Agreed... I was only kidding :)

I wonder who sponsored that website?

@Jacob Horrible map, try selecting some of those tiny states like DC
I literally cannot even get a pointer for NY

3:44 AM
I, for one, am all in favour of automation.
it raises the value of human life.

Call me Malthusian, but I think the only thing that raises the value of human life, is fewer humans.

@RyanRies ECON 101

@Jacob minimumwage.com/about Um, they tell you who they are.

Founded in 1991, the Employment Policies Institute is a non-profit research organization dedicated to studying public policy issues surrounding employment growth. In particular, EPI focuses on issues that affect entry-level employment.

EPI sponsors nonpartisan research which is conducted by independent economists at major universities around the country.
Doesn't tell me which Fortune 500s sponsor them...
I guess all of them'

@RyanRies Have you been drinking again? I had to block you for about a week last time you came on here drunk

3:49 AM
hello all

(Keep in mind that that is also a biased website...)

so what are we talking about?

@TeemuLeisti Surprisingly, not fisting for once
(probably because @cole isn't here)

oh ok

We were talking about what a shitty language PHP is.

3:54 AM
yeah, especially when someone is trying to use it instead of bash.

And on the topic of things we're not discussing, we're also not discussing "Why the sky is blue","Quantum Mechanics","Audis","Why being a homosexual is awesome","Star Trek","Why?","How long does it take to suffocate someone","Is there something better than tissues for cleaning up jizz","Why do Americans get their groceries in paper bags","What would happen if you opened a portal from the ocean into Wesley's house"
THe list of thigns we're not discussing just goes on and on and on

@MarkHenderson Where do you get "Why do Americans get their groceries in paper bags" from?
It's not true

@Jacob Movies
TV

@MarkHenderson see above comment

Everyone on TV or movies brings home groceries, hugging them to their chests in flimsy paper bags

3:56 AM
@MarkHenderson Plastic is the norm...

I don't remember the last time I saw a grocery store put groceries in a paper bag.

Trader's Joe.
Always paper bags.

Ah, there's not one around here. And anyway, we have a stack of reusable canvas bags.

yeah, me too.

maybe we could discuss "Why?"

3:58 AM
@Jacob Plastic bags are starting to become illegal in some states here. South Australia banned grocery stores from supplying them years ago

as paper bag always break.

You have to bring canvas bags with you, or buy canvas bags while you're there
@MichaelHampton Only useful if you remember to take them out of the boot (trunk) before you leave the car :p

San Francisco did that. I think a few other places have as well.
@MarkHenderson Yes, true, sometimes I forget.
And I know what a car boot is.

@MichaelHampton I forget maybe 30% of the time

ok, time to go

4:00 AM
And sometimes I deliberately don't bring them because I need plastic bags for home :P
@MichaelHampton That was more for the less-educated (@Jacob et. al)

@MarkHenderson True. In the US, if your'e talking about cars, a boot usually refers to one of these:

Teemu probably left for some more exiting chat, like web cam chat for example.

@MichaelHampton Here we call them "WTF IS THIS SHIT DOING ON MY CAR FUCK YOU NORTH SYDNEY COUNCIL"

@MarkHenderson Angle grinder ftw?

Actually I don't know if many places use them here, but we call them clamps :P

4:02 AM
s/exiting/exciting
I never saw this in US.
I mean at least not in the towns I lived.

@Jacob A few weeks ago I watched a YouTube video of someone doing exactly that.

You can get lithium battery powered angle grinders these days
Could be a cheap way to repeatedly get out of fines
But surely they know that they clamped you, and when your car is gone/fine not paid they will send you an infringement notice?

@MarkHenderson Atleast in the US you can rent them.

and expensive way for them keep some useable boots in stock.

4:06 AM
@MarkHenderson I guess, I try to avoid the issue in the first place

@Jacob I've only ever had one parking fine, and it was in front of my mother in laws house, and someone must have called the ranger specifically because they were unhappy with the position I had parked in. Fucking wankers.
@MichaelHampton Wow thats a proper petrol powered fucking saw

Jeez. Apparently the clamps in Melbourne have spikes.

Not a fucking saw. You wouldn't want to fuck that. It would cut you a new vagina whether you wanted it or not
@MichaelHampton 5-series? Fucker deserved it
Apologies to @ewwhite for the previous statement

Calling poweful people in the correct places works much better.

4:10 AM
@Jacob I dunno, name dropping to get out of things where you've done the wrong thing is pretty stinky
It perpetuates the cycle of people in power misusing their power for personal gain

Oh and don't get tickets in the first and or pay them first ?

Politicians here have lost careers over writing letters to get their sons out of parking fines

@MarkHenderson I avoid it by not getting parking fines?

@Jacob Well that too. I've only had 3 speeding fines (all in-person, never from a camera) and I just suck it up. The approximately 9,000 times I've sped and not got caught, I can deal with it this once

@MarkHenderson Luckily we don't have speed cameras

4:12 AM
Also, haven't had a speeding fine in 3 years so I should have lost most of my demerit points
@Jacob We have them everywhere. Also, on the freeway on my way to and from work there is 90% of the time a highway patrol car radaring
Which is horrible because it's a wide, fast freeway with a stupidly low speed limit so everyone barrels down there, not harming anyone

@Jacob By not having the car is the most efficient way to avoid them.

@MarkHenderson I have a 400 mile trip on a highway tomorrow that is notorious for police :(
@DanilaLadner I have to have a car...

I'm quite shocked that I have never gotten a speeding ticket. Even when I was doing 15mph over the limit right in front of a cop.

aah, it is wonderful that we do not have boots in canada

I did get quite a few.

4:16 AM
@MichaelHampton Haha I once got pulled over by a cop because he was in the slow lane doing the speed limit and I was doing about 20kph more, just wafting past. Didn't realise he was a cop car until I was ontop of him. He let me off with a warning; I think he only pulled me over because there were a lot of other cars around and he wanted to set an example.

also, how much can you speed by in the US, as a rule, before cops start harassing you?

@FalconMomot ~5MPH is safe 10 is pushing and 13 or so is a definite pull-over

cool

Also, 10 years ago the cops would only stop you for doing 125+ in a 110 zone. At From 120-125 you might get a flash just as a warning to slow down. But now I've been booked for doing 115 in a 110 zone

@MarkHenderson a lot of rural highways have a speedlimit of 113 KPH
Urbanish areas are usually 90 :(

4:19 AM
@Jacob Our maximum speedlimit everywhere except one state is 110. Northern Territory went from unrestricted to 130, but they're going back to unrestricted again

It's annoying here because it will switch going down the road for no reason

@Jacob OMG they do that here too
It's usually some legacy hangover from when they upgraded the highway 15 years ago but never legislated the change in speed limit
And thats where the cops sit

Or here in the mountains... Cops will sit at the bottom of the hills -_-. Well officer I didn't want to rape my brakes and die...

My trip to church is along a 110kph freeway for about 20 minutes, but there's a section in the middle that's 90. For no fucking reason at all. And thats where they sit
@Jacob I think thye have rules here stating they can't book you on a gradient higher than 4% or something
I know speed cameras have to be on a flat

@MarkHenderson WV police are terrible
Atleast in VA they are semi fair

4:21 AM
Oh, and what's this shit about radar detectors being illegal.

@MichaelHampton What are you asking?

wtf have Yahoo done to Yahoo Groups?!
How the fuck do I search a group?

@Jacob I'm not asking, I'm saying it's shit.

I'm debating whether to drive down to seattle this january, or fly down and go without a car

@MichaelHampton Because otherwise nobody would get booked
I agree it's bullshit

4:23 AM
AFAIK they have radar detectors? Plus they use LIDAR anyway

LIDAR is hard to detect
because of the lack of a massively obvious radiation pattern

@FalconMomot If you were in Vancouver I'd say drive. But from Calgary it's a rather long trip...

@Jacob You can get LIDAR detectors these days too

@MichaelHampton About 12-13 hours
through the mountains in winter

Fly. Hire a car if you need one.

4:26 AM
anyone know whether trying to ride a bike in seattle in january or february is an insane idea?

@MichaelHampton Yep, that's the way to go
@FalconMomot Yes

Oh, and besides, I don't really trust that temporary bridge they put up...
On May 23, 2013, at approximately 7:00 pm PDT, one span of the Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River at Mount Vernon, Washington State immediately collapsed into the river when it was struck by an over-height truck. Two other vehicles with three people fell with the span. The trapped people were rescued by boats. Background The bridge crosses between Mount Vernon and Burlington, in Washington State, about north of Seattle. It is part of the primary road transportation route between the metropolitan areas of Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia. Before the collapse, approx...

@Jacob it is? aww.

I am from Russia originally, I used to ride a bike in winter.
It is just not save, that's all.

@MichaelHampton I hate it when they use the word "immediate". I doubt it was immediate at all. I bet it took at least some span of time

4:27 AM
Is there snow in seattle in winter?

Like "They died immediately" - well hang on, you don't know that. We in fact know very little about death, and at what stage a person actually experiences death

@DanilaLadner Not that much, usually.

I don't know - I've never been there in the winter
I'll happily bike in torrential downpours
but I try to avoid doing it on snow and ice.

There's even arguments about at what stage is a person dead. Just look at Mandella - his family keeping him on life support. I would classify that as dead

@MarkHenderson It was pretty close to immediate. One of the people whose car fell into the water was right behind the truck that struck the bridge.

4:32 AM
@MichaelHampton Where did you get that from?

@Jacob I was watching the news at the time it happened.

@MichaelHampton oh

Yeah, CBS killed their web video feed and put up a live feed of the local news from Seattle for several hours after it happened.

God, how I hate politics, can't they just let syrians deal with their shit on their own?

@DanilaLadner You could ask the same question of practically any country that the US has been fucking around with for the past century or so.

4:42 AM
Yeah, it just over the line I think, Obama 2007 words: It's time to admit that no amount of American lives can resolve the political disagreement that lies at the heart of someone else's civil war. That's why I have a plan that will bring our combat troops home by March of 2008" WTF is he doing now?
"Lockheed Martin" is not meeting its revenue goals this year?

5:31 AM
@DanilaLadner You can never believe a word any politician says, no matter how much you might want to believe them
We have a guy running for prime minister here who has actually said that unless it's in an official press release, not to take anything his says in person/in interviews too seriously

Q: Chkconfig-- what are the 0-6 in chkconfig result?

user1812956what are the 0-6 in chkconfig result ? Example chkconfig --list|grep iptables iptables 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off

And people voted for him?

@DanilaLadner Nope, he has lost 2 elections in a row, but I think he will win this one

At least he's honest about his lying...

5:35 AM
@MichaelHampton We get to choose between dumb, dumber and the greens in this election

yeah, what a nice world we live in.

"Douche and Turd" is the eighth episode of the eighth season of the animated television series South Park, and the 119th episode overall. It first aired on Comedy Central in the United States on October 27, 2004, just before the 2004 presidential election. In the episode, PETA forces South Park Elementary to change their school mascot, so a new election is held to determine a new mascot. Meanwhile, Stan ends up getting kicked out of South Park after refusing to vote. The episode was written by series co-creator Trey Parker and is rated TV-MA in the United States. Plot During a pep rally...

Our current prime minister isn't really all that bad, but he was caught on camera eating his own ear wax as a back-bencher
@MichaelHampton Hah I knew I had seen something in a south park episode once

6:13 AM
@MarkHenderson MORNING MATEY

@pauska AFTERNOON
Going home in 10 minutes and Sunday (fathers day) got a massive system going live so fingers crossed I won't be in tears by the end of the day

6:29 AM
You're a big boy, I'll sure it'll be fine

Q: Using which software can I produce network maps of this kind?

clawsI found this image few years ago. I don't remember where I found it but it really helped me in teaching all the networking concepts to my students. I mean, picturing network like this has somehow made things very clear than those 2-D Network diagrams. The only problem with this image is that it ...

Busted...

6:47 AM
how so?

@FalconMomot "This image is fake, I want a real one"... Um, that IS a real one

7:17 AM
@FalconMomot did you and @Thecleaner go close-vote happy last night? ... on router questions..

7:37 AM
As sick as it is, I've met my goal... Now I can let myself go...

@MichaelHampton what are you using as default SELinux user mapping in your IPA setup? (ipa config-show)
@ewwhite 1000 days or astronomical rep?

probably both ;p
