@voretaq7 No, but thermite can make melting lead into a rather quick process. That or a nice fresnel lens.

@voretaq7 Yeah, I was gonna answer it, but it's closed. Good riddance, stretching no into 30 characters is a pain anyway.

@HopelessN00b lead has a (relatively) low melting point. You can make it on your kitchen stove if you're so inclined.
@HopelessN00b HTML comments.

@voretaq7 Yeah, I know, but thermite certainly does create molten lead, regardless of whether or not you could do the same thing with a lighter or a 100W light bulb. :p
Actually, I bet thermite would make gaseous lead too... lemme check.

Q: Disable thumbnailing on a per folder basis

MishaI have a folder that contains 20 Gigabytes of precious gif images. When I open this folder my computer slows to a halt. Does anybody know of a way to prevent Windows 8 from making thumbnails for only that folder. I know how to disable it globally. Maybe editing the mysterious thumbs.db file?

Yup, Pb: Boiling Point: 1740.0 °C, thermite's ignition point is over 3K.

Your porn... erm, "precious images" will look better as .pngs, FYI. — HopelessN00b 27 secs ago

Ohhh, and he edited his comment now.

@WesleyDavid MLPorno?

Installing SharePoint 2013 Enterprise. Still easier than Confluence.

@WesleyDavid Did pictures of boobs jiggling get reclassified as "physics simulation" when I wasn't paying attention?

is a video game series produced by Tecmo and developed by Team Ninja that is primarily composed of fast-paced 3D fighting games. Its story and characters are the creation of Tomonobu Itagaki, who has since left the company and is no longer working on the series. In addition to its innovative countering system, the franchise is arguably as well known for its cast of busty female characters and the animation of their breasts. This aspect of the game's popularity led to the creation of the spin-off game Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball and its sequels, where the women and their sex ap...

I want some Doritos.

@WesleyDavid Well, if you were in Washington, I'd assume you were celebrating I502 with a blunt.

@Adrian Pass di dutchie, mon.

@Adrian Yeah celebrate... interstate highways?

12:37 AM
@HopelessN00b State initiatives (propositions in California). I think Washington State had one about cannabis.

Oh. Yes, celebrate that it'll be the DEA throwing you in federal prison for 5 years, instead of a misdemeanor state rap. Huzzah, or somesuch, I guess.

Eh, the feds can't keep up. A few more states falling down and they'll have to cave. I've been very surprised though at the level of aggression coming out of the administration against small / recreational drug offenses.

@WesleyDavid I'm surprised everyone hadn't figured that out about Obama 5 years ago, but whatever.
Fuck NVIDIA. Put your goddamn driver updates through QA process, you retards. :/

12:53 AM
@HopelessN00b But... but... hope!!
@HopelessN00b There, there dear. Have a lolly and settle down.

@84104 Yeah, as of December 6th, recreational cannabis in small amounts is legal as far as the State and Local governments are concerned.

@Adrian Legal, or de-criminalised?

@WesleyDavid especially considering that's how 70% of the prison inmate counts in the US got there since the 1980s.

@WesleyDavid And change, right, I remember reading that somewhere. :p Anyway, good thing about that hope bit, 'cause it's all we'll be left with come 2017.

@MarkHenderson Legalised.
It's now regulated like alcohol.
There's even a DUI threshold value specified. It needs tweaking for sure, but it's a good start.

12:56 AM
@Adrian Honestly, though, if rational thought entered the drug war at any point, it would have been stopped decades ago, or before it started, so I don't hold out much hope it's gonna change now. :(

@HopelessN00b No, the people can be rational about it. It's the government that can't be rational. It's too worried about being re-elected to be rational.

Hey, prohibition worked out so well, we should expand it to every other drug out there, brilliant!!

It's funny how all the niche players, pundits, and whatnot always seem to get caught by surprise come election day.
Eventually the US public comes around and realizes that astonishingly stupid things need to go away.
Look at the "legitimate rape" dipshits that all got thrown out.

@Adrian Um... have you seen voters? They're the one who vote out politicians who aren't "tough on crime" and give even a hint that they might be soft on drugs.
@Adrian The whatnows?

@HopelessN00b Yes, but that's because you're looking at the wrong layer of the problem.
Put things on ballots as Initiatives and they'll usually vote in their best interest as long as the game isn't getting horribly rigged.

12:59 AM
Well, in that case we could just dispense with Congress entirely.

We've got one dipshit here called Tim Eyman who's gaming it for all he's worth that's causing problems, but generally speaking, the American Voter doesn't have much use for complete asshats when considered as a whole.

@Adrian I don't think so. As with most things, the problem is people. True since ancient times, and will be true as long as we exist as a species.

@HopelessN00b And thus the beauty of this fine country. You sir, are entitled to and encouraged to have your own opinion.
"If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking." George S. Patton

@MichaelHampton Why not? Got it halfway done in 1919, may as well finish it off now. Now sense paying all that money for Congress when the people can run mob rule democracy just fine without 'em.
@Adrian Mark Twain - "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect."

But the majority voted for Romney...

1:02 AM
Wow, there's a Microsoft employee named Rock Wang

@MichaelHampton Is that how it shook out at the end? Regardless, the majority voting for the slightly lesser brother of Satan is hardly an argument for the majority's decision making abilities.

Yep, Romney got the popular vote and Obama got the electoral vote. That hasn't happened in a while...

@MichaelHampton Not since the last time the liberals were up in arms about it, anyway. Weird, I don't hear much noise about it this time...

@MichaelHampton So far the numbers I'm seeing have Obama winning the popular vote by 2981201.

Hm, those weren't the last numbers I saw. But then again I haven't looked since Wednesday morning, so they've had plenty of time to fudge them....

1:06 AM
I'm really getting pissed that Microsoft requires an AD domain for so many of their products. Just because I need some MSFT services, now I have to build a domain and manage another directory. Sonuvabitch.

@MichaelHampton Ah, yeah, some places are still reporting. I don't think Florida has been decided yet.

@MichaelHampton Yes, Romney hasn't had the popular vote benefit for a while now. Today's report is that Obama will have wom the popular vote by 3%

Aha. I kind of lost interest after Wednesday morning...

@MichaelHampton Yeah, it was pretty well obvious by about 11EST on Tuesday. Now it's just getting the finals.

@MichaelHampton I think I lost interest around August... of 2002.

1:10 AM
@HopelessN00b Eh, the elections are fun to watch, much like a 75-car pileup on an ice-covered interstate.

@MichaelHampton Except for the fact that in the national elections, you're getting dragged along with whatever the drooling, window-licking masses do...

@HopelessN00b Some of us have written off the U.S. government as a lost cause.

@MichaelHampton Some of us still have to live here. :p
No, you were right the first time. And it doesn't change much anyway, given the government is in charge.

In any case, I think it's pretty sad that the results so far are that Obama is leading by 18% in the EC (with ~5% outstanding) and will only have won by about 3% of the popular.

@HopelessN00b I guess I've had somewhat different experiences than you. Starting with the completely unexpected arrival of half a dozen U.S. marshals and ATF agents at my front door a few years back.

1:15 AM
@MichaelHampton You'd be surprised. How's that go? A conservative's just a liberal who's been mugged... and a libertarian's just a conservative who's been mugged by the government.

@HopelessN00b Oh, I was a libertarian by the time I was 21. Having gone through all of that early. :)

Either way, I'd figure having a half dozen paramilitaries show up at your door might illustrate that the government's in charge, regardless of any trivial inconveniences, like popular will or toilet paper the constitution.

Oh, it was unpleasant. But they forgot to get a warrant first... so they spent an hour and a half asking me to let them in, which I didn't :)

Hmm. I'll try to remember that trick. I'd probably have grabbed the guns first, and thought about the whole warrant thing during the sentencing phase.

We have something better than guns. We have video cameras.

1:21 AM
Ugh. And speaking of guns, third flash power outage tonight. I really need to buy a UPS.
@MichaelHampton Yeah, those only help when the cops don't take the tapes. Thankfully there's the cloud now shudder - that feels wrong to say - but a wee bit late for me.

Oh, I solved that problem before smartphones were widespread. Amazing what happens when you hook up a voice mail box to a mailing list.
Around here, if the cops arrest the wrong person for "possession of marijuana" then about 100 people show up at the police station and hotbox their lobby.

@MichaelHampton Yeah, NH, "live free or die," the libertarian movement you got going on there... and me in O-fucking-hio. :(

Come on up and join the fun. Before we secede. :)

@MichaelHampton ...or shortly after. Always up for a good firefight in support of a noble cause. :)

@HopelessN00b Naa, the first thing we'll be doing is putting up a border fence to keep the Massholes out. :)

1:35 AM
...and, I need a new video card. This fucking week. Gah.
@MichaelHampton Doesn't sound smart. It'll slow the flow of socialists fleeing freedom in search of nanny government.

@HopelessN00b Oh, we'll be more than happy to let them leave...
Ooo, Dyn is hiring.

@MichaelHampton Yeah, but they don't even run any MSDNS servers, so how good can they be at this interwebs thing?

@HopelessN00b That's why they're so good. No Windows anywhere.

@MichaelHampton No Windows anywhere? I'll shoot off an email, offer to help them rectify that for real cheap.

@HopelessN00b haha, that should be good for some laughs :)

1:48 AM
@MichaelHampton Don't worry, when I get in, I'll refer you as the guy to help admin their legacy linux boxes. :)

@HopelessN00b Hahahahahahahaha.

2:02 AM
@MichaelHampton my coworker at the last real job came directly from Dyn
in that role

Aha, and how did he like it?
Did I mention that my girlfriend's ex is currently a sysadmin at Dyn?

@MichaelHampton or a similar role... he's really a superstar developer, but was devops-y there.
he seemed to like, but wanted to move on the bigger/better things

@ewwhite Yeah, I was gonna leave my answer as a comment, link to the FAQ, downvote and VTC... but someone some porcupine posted an answer while I was doing it, so no auto-deletion for that thing, sadly. :(

VMware's offering (whatever its name is this month)
@HopelessN00b I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, since his question could probably be rescued by removing the references to personal use. But when he posted his comment to my answer, I had to vote to close.
If you've never even heard of "VMware's offering (whatever its name is this month)", then you probably aren't doing this in a professional setting.

I asked a question here. Didnt get an answer. Can I ask same question on AskUbuntu?

Q: ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on (111)

JohnMerlinoI am unable to connect to on my ubuntu installation a remote tcp/ip which contains a mysql installation: viggy@ubuntu:~$ mysql -u user.name -p -h xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -P 3306 Enter password: ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' (111) I commented out the line below...

2:16 AM
@JohnMerlino It's very frowned on to make duplicate posts on more than one Stack Exchange site.
I did read your question a couple hours ago and I'm still thinking about it.

oh ok thanks

@JohnMerlino Just so we're clear, you did make the config file change and restart MySQL on the remote server, right?

@JohnMerlino Post the contents of netstat -tl

no, I made the change on my local machine and I restarted my local mysql server

@JohnMerlino That wouldn't have any effect on the remote server, which is what I presume you're trying to gain access to.

2:21 AM
ok I am not on the sudoer list of the remote server. So basically I need to comment out bind-address on remote server and then restart that one?

@JohnMerlino Yes. Also make sure skip-networking isn't anywhere to be found

Right, you have to make the change on the remote server. Since it appears someone deleted their (correct) answer I'll just post a new answer.

@JohnMerlino Dude. Think about it. Why would editing your local server parameters affect the remote server?

@MikeyB other people arent having the problem I am having, so I thought it was something with my machine

@JohnMerlino That's because other people understand what's happening when they connect to a remote host
And yes, you're "somewhat" correct in that your user account isn't allowed to connect from your current external IP. Still makes no sense to edit a separate MySQL daemon's configuration file

2:25 AM
@JohnMerlino I posted the solution.

yeah your right, it doesnt make sense. Im logging into their server right now, but I think it wont let me edit it

@JohnMerlino I inferred you aren't the admin of the remote server.

correct

@JohnMerlino You'd have to get the admin to make the changes, or use @MikeyB's suggestion to forward a port with ssh. Though that might be against policy and get you into hot water...

@MichaelHampton We start with cold water. Once they're in it, and over the flame, they can just wait while it heats to a boil.

2:28 AM
Yeah i got that message "is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported."

Enh, it's just a database, how important could it be?

Everyone knows that all the important stuff is hosted on websites over .torrent

@jscott The thing about a frog not jumping out of water is a myth. It'll jump out regardless. You have to put a lid on the pot.

@JohnMerlino RUN! WHILE YOU STILL CAN! THEY'RE ONTO YOU!

By sheer coincidence, somebody just bumped a question about tunneling MySQL over SSH to the front page...

@JohnMerlino Don't let it get away with that. Call it a tattle-tale, and threaten to have your big brother kick its ass!

2:30 AM
@JohnMerlino Just have the admin add you to /etc/sudoers, or put you in wheel or whatever's required for that install.

I just viewed the file though and it is commented it out there as well, it appears someone did comment it out there

Probably firewalled, then.
And without sudo you won't be able to view the firewall rules.

Now that I make enough to buy every piece of software I use, I *still* download a DRM-free copy from one of those online places that offer such things.
(Not to defend those particular twits, or asking about it on here...)

4:04 AM
@MarkHenderson Wait, middle-click? Doesn't that just open-in-new-tab?

@MarkHenderson Aye. I only download stuff not available on TV in the US and mostly even then it's stuff not even on video. Like B&W historical footage of Motorcycle Grand Prix racing pre-1970

@MichaelHampton Middle-click the actual tab itself and it closes
But yes middle-clicking a link opens in a new tab

@MarkHenderson Huh, you're right, it does. I always just went for the X...

@Adrian My rationale is similar, I download shit that's not going to show in Australia for months. Also, nobody one person actually pays each time they watch TV (advertisers end up footing the bill), whereas people do pay to buy video games, so I feel that vindicates me at least a little bit

Must be my Windows-ness, but I've grown to loathe 3 button mice. Always end up sliding onto the wrong button, and before you know it, the window's closed, I've lost my flow and have to start fapping that work I was doing all over again.

4:07 AM
@HopelessN00b 2 button mice drive me nuts. How else would I use the cut-buffer?

@Adrian Click both buttons.

Clicking BOTH buttons to paste off the cut-buffer is a PITA

That's why you buy a mouse with more than two buttons.
It did take me quite a while to get used to clicking the scroll wheel, though. I used to own an actual three button mouse.

My last mouse had forward/backward buttons on it that worked with Firefox. Loved that mouse.

@MichaelHampton BAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA as someone with a mac at home, this makes me laugh

4:09 AM

Fucking Apple took 78 years to add a 2nd button to their mouse, but you can't right-and-left click at the same time
It makes it impossible to play games that require zooming and shooting at the same time
@Adrian Ditto, MX5000 Laser

@MarkHenderson On UNIX-like systems using X, clicking the middle button (or both buttons, if the mouse doesn't have a middle button) causes it to "Paste".

Great mouse, once you clean all the jizz off it

@MichaelHampton I get those donated now and then. Usually all grimy and occasionally full of baby cockroaches.

@MichaelHampton that... would take some getting used to, as I use middle-click regularly for scrolling slowly through large documents

4:10 AM
@MichaelHampton Paste from the Cut-Buffer, which is not the Clipboard.

Like an auto-cue

@Adrian Right, right, that's "grime" on the mouse, and not anything worse...

@MarkHenderson Haha, I occasionally middle click to paste when using Windows, and the scrolling thing continually surprises me.

@HopelessN00b Well, I don't think they shipped from Logitech in a mostly uniform dark grey.

@Adrian True. Though I have KDE and it does a pretty good job of keeping them in sync. Most of the time.

4:12 AM
What I do love about the apple mouse is that you can gesture on it. Swipe the body left or right to go forward/back etc

@MichaelHampton Bleh. I don't WANT them in in-sync. I want my cut-buffer to NOT talk to the clipboard.

Did anyone ever have that IBM mouse that had a trackpoint ontop of it (for 360 degree scrolling)?

@Adrian Oh, grey? You might be safe. The ones I see are all yellowed, and there's not enough money in the world to get me to touch one. May as well be dog-poo on the end of a stick, as far as I'm concerned.

Gives me two different areas to paste from and I can cut & paste two things into the destination that way.
@HopelessN00b Yeah,they're yellow where the "grime" is worn off. I told the volunteers to haul them straight to the Trash.
Considering we get mice for $4.25, I don't think it's a big line item.

@Adrian Well, obviously your neckbeard is better than mine.
Don't we have a canonical iptables question yet? I'm really sick of all the questions from people who have absolutely no idea what they're doing and screw up their system...

4:16 AM
man iptables ?

@HopelessN00b Man pages are for neckbeards.

@MichaelHampton So, you're saying I'm a Windows admin with a neckbeard? I knew that whole *nix thing was way easier than you guys let on.

@HopelessN00b I dare you to try to read the iptables man page.

@HopelessN00b Neckbeards don't run Linux.

4:24 AM
@ChrisS man pages are a UNIX thing too/originally, though...

Real Neckbeards write their own OS. From scratch. By toggling transistor states with their facial hairs.

@ChrisS they might - it's just they tear their neckbeards out in frustration

4:36 AM
I'm no neckbeard. But I'm definitely all about getting shit done. Efficiently.

The iptables management isn't that bad.

@MikeyB iptables is an elephant

@MikeyB No, iptables isn't terribly hard. But you don't want to learn it by reading the man page.

Firewalls should be gymnasts.

@MichaelHampton That sounds like an exercise in humiliation

4:39 AM
@voretaq7 Eh? Is it slow or something?

@MichaelHampton He probably thinks it's slow because he used it as a perimeter firewall once

Oh dear gawd no. You buy a freaking piece of hardware for that.

@MichaelHampton Come on man, where's your sense of neckbeard

@JoelESalas @MichaelHampton I have no opinion on it's speed. I just think its codebase is bloated.

@JoelESalas Once upon a time, I ran Gentoo. In fact I ran it for several years. But eventually I decided I wanted to get stuff done other than compiling the system.

@MichaelHampton Compiling the system is an end unto itself

Someone baconated coffee.

@JoelESalas Why should I compile the system when others will do it for me for free?

@voretaq7 I don't trust Debian as far as I can throw them.

4:49 AM
@MichaelHampton I don't trust Mark Shuttleworth as hard as I can cockpunch him.

That's not to say Red Hat hasn't screwed up before, too...

@MichaelHampton Red Hat has some modicum of respect for the needs of the enterprise instead of neckbeardly WHAT IS THIS NONSENSE, LET ME REMOVE THIS FUNCTION CALL IT CAN'T DO ANYTHING GOOD

@JoelESalas Red Hat has their own way of doing things, and fearlessly break anything that is not the Red Hat Way

@voretaq7 Rawdoggin' it with --nodeps

@voretaq7 I don't mind that so much, since it's all documented, and I seem to be one of those rare individuals who actually reads the documentation.

4:59 AM
@MichaelHampton I mind, because it's not standards-compliant, and they break the standard tools.

Wait, which standards did they break? Other than Microsoft standards...

@MichaelHampton Even AIX, where you MUST use smit to do anything, still has a working netstat

Wait, netstat is broken in Red Hat? How so?

@MichaelHampton there was talk of removing it in an upcoming version at one point, perhaps they've come to their senses
(or perhaps it was Debian that was considering such blasphemy and I'm mixing the two up, but it was one of those goddamn penguin-fucker distributions....)

Ugh, I'm going to bed, but a parting gift before I go...

Q: Network clouding / VPN

sujithI need to access internet as well as my VPN network using cisco 1841 router? IS this possible. Kindly help

5:02 AM
@voretaq7 Oh no, it's Linux in general... all the old utilities are being deprecated. netstat is being deprecated in favor of ss.
...and the package maintainers responsible for it are Debian people.

@MichaelHampton mmhmm
and this ss nazi utility
it is in which section of POSIX again?

Point. Though I wouldn't blame this on Red Hat.

If they want to stop adhering to POSIX and do their own thing that's fine
just stop pretending to be a "unix-like operating system" and admit you're as bad as MS.

@voretaq7 Eh, my Fedora 17 box has netstat and it's being actively maintained. So fuck those Debian people.

5:09 AM
@MichaelHampton your fedora 17 box also has the OOM killer sneaking about in the shadows waiting for an unsuspecting database server to knife in the goolies.
and a package monster called yum, but I can't hold that against you. computer people are shit at naming things.

Hm, I thought I turned off the OOM killer....

@MichaelHampton <river>It doesn't matter. It'll still be there. Waiting.</river>

@voretaq7 Oh, in that case I'll save it for a special occasion. When I really need to kill something.
Then again, if I REALLY need something dead, the easiest way is to just have Oracle buy it.

@MichaelHampton sniffle

I might be running Solaris on my desktop today if not for that.

5:17 AM
@MichaelHampton I mis my Sun workstations...

OpenIndiana? Worth trying out?

@MichaelHampton everything is worth trying
except Windows.

@voretaq7 That's not normal. But on Meth it is.

Q: SAS or SATA for 3 TB drives?

SyRenityWe are looking to purchase new 3 TB enterprise-grade drives and can buy either SAS or SATA models. AFAIK, SAS generally gives better performance than SATA, but searching for benchmarks I found the article Seagate Constellation.2 and Constellation ES.2 Hard Drive Review . The summary is tha...

TL;DR Cobbler is awesome. Go to their Indie Go Go page and consider a donation. The Long Story Anyone familiar with the RedHat slice of the Linux pie will have a good chance of having heard of Cobbler. I could go on about it, but I’ll let the project speak for itself: Cobbler is a Linux installation server that allows for rapid setup of network installation environments. It glues toge
