12:00 AM
do you guys recommend using Fail2Ban in production? I use it currently on our publicly exposed dev boxes. We have a need for some form of active alerting and reaction, but no resources for purchasing or even learning anything new and complex
I'm referring to more than just SSH protection. Our SSH port is not visible externally

Considering how often I see it recommended whenever anyone asks a question even remotely related to "how do I keep my logfiles small from all of the SSH scanners out there", I'd say it's safe for production.

@hobodave I've been using denyhosts in production for years, haven't made the jump to fail2ban yet.

I will never use denyhosts again :)
@packs had a box go down hard because of denyhosts. The host.deny list grew to a few thousand IPs and it caused sshd to use insane amounts of memory and time with each connection attempt. It eventually caused it to swap and crap started getting killed by the OOM killer
something to be aware of at least :)
we got hit with a nasty attack last Friday on our open (sigh) SIP port, they were bruteforcing passwords for 40+ hours

@hobodave At one time I remember the files getting huge, but there are very few machines that aren't highly restricted on ssh.
I don't remember running into your problem before, though. I do have my machines subscribe to the service. Hmm..let's see how big those files are :)

Q: This is a test question. It should not actually get posted to the site.

Big, but not huge.

@packs I didn't even subscribe

@Zoredache That user is an obvious spammer. I would like to submit a flag for them.

Actually, that user isn't a spammer, just a person who was trying to test something, and thought he could self-delete his question.

@hobodave I wonder if what you're describing is a bug in the version, or just a known issue with the tcpwrapper code.

12:21 AM
@packs it very well could have been a bug. I left it and never looked back

@Zoredache chomp

I wonder if I should ask a new question on meta, or if my update to my existing question about the url filter was enough... meta.serverfault.com/questions/1193
I swear this is a dup (serverfault.com/questions/232416/…) but I can't find the question...

@Zoredache Probably because Kyle blogged about it a while back.

Wasn't Kyle's post about allowing developers admin access on the Production servers?
Or was there another.

@Zoredache It was, but that question reminded me about that blog-post something fierce.

12:39 AM
I really wish some company would develop a good type 1 hypervisor for the desktop.
That way you can have the best of both, Give dev limited access to one VM, and full admin access on a couple dev VMs that are forced to a different vlan.
Found one that was pretty close on SF, and one that was nearly identical on SO. I wish I could vote as duplicate of the SO post.

Anyone here have experience with Ghost-like software for tanking up multiple pc's at once (ie multicast), without having to pay the US budget as a fee in licenses? One of our companies is a school, where they buy used $300 laptop to perform courses with.. using $46 in symantec ghost license on each laptop (1600 laptops) just for one single ghost session is a bit steep
Hrm, maybe this should be posted as a question on the site instead

Well if they're Windows, we use WDS for multicast deployment in my college and it works really well
And relatively cost neutral to set up at school licence prices, possibly even free if they have a server box with the capacity available. (The one that was just doing Ghost?)

Well, thats the problem.. they cant get the school licensing from Microsoft
I dont exactly know why, maybe because its a corporation (as in profit $$)

ah well then
in that case they can probably afford it. I think Windows server will cost less than ghost however you slice
not sure about multicast support but you could look at fog too

Yeah, agreed. I've used WDS before, it's sweet

12:14 PM
Just gotta check out the licensing rules then.. if they can get away with user cals for just the laptops in the process of being imaged then it'll be cheap

fog is cheaper though not as slick

Maybe look at opsi.org

we went WDS but I know a hell of a lot of UK schools and colleges use FOG and do very well with it. If you look on the edugeek website they have a forum there supporting it

Linux-based, GPL3 license

Hello everyone

12:19 PM
hi

@RobertMoir: fog actually looks quite nice

Oh it is. I know some people who have done big big deployments with it.

I have a question, currently my VPS is hosting one website through a single IP, now I am planning to run one more website on that same IP, which is multiple, my website directory is /www/html/all_my_current_website_files now if I am going to add a new website, which will be in a folder, will the current websites location do I have to change?

@ntechi: Why don't you open a question on the main site?

OK
@SvenW what is the main site?

I was kidding ;)

Of course, or: ^W

So, what's new?

same stuff different day

very bright in the UK today isn't it?

yeah... it seems the front reception of our shiny new campus building has been designed in a huge parabolic arc that catches and gathers sunlight from wherever it is in the sky on a sunny day like this
so i'm trying to stay out of that part of the building...

12:46 PM
when you say campus are you in education?
what do we think about this 'question' - close or leave?

@Chopper3 LOL. And a great morning it is, too, with a greeting like that! ;-)
@Chopper3 I can attempt to edit
it looks like a valid question is in there somewhere

@Chopper yes, I work for a 6th form college

I used to work on bank trading floors and in most of them there's a competition for who can enter with the most interesting/abusive profanity-laden welcome - some of them were astonishingly offensive

and that question leaves me speechless. Which doesn't happen often

@RobertMoir Oh cool, my son's looking around at 6th forms right now - although the school he's at probably has the best for miles so if he can he'll stay there I think

12:53 PM
Whatever gives him a good choice of subjects he wants to do is good.
I think a few places still plan on making the time table easy for the staff first and students just have to fit in around that

That question is another that really deserves a "think about trying to leave the ocean first before planning a manned mission to mars dude" response

vs. figuring out what student want to do and moving hell and earth to make that combination possible
and lets be honest for most students its also "where are my mates going"

@Chopper3 OK, cleaned up a bit, but yes, it's still very broad!

looking better Josh but.. .still yeah... the guy needs to walk before trying to run!

@RobertMoir I was very "focussed" so knew where I wanted to go but I imagine many of them decide that way - my son's pretty focussed too so will probably pick the place that gives him the best chance to get the degree course he wants (I hope/think)

12:56 PM
@RobertMoir yeah. And it's borderline for SF anyway as both questions are really kinda programming questions!
"How do I program a site to set up a cpanel account"
"How do I build an online domain name registration system"

hopefully chopper, agreed josh... got to go

@Josh thank you

Q: Bandwidth Monitor

SaxtorI am creating a bandwidth quota program in PHP, however I am finding that to create it with PHP is a bit hard. As an example of what I am trying to do, the user can download 10GB per day, and after they have reached the bandwidth cap the user should be unable to connect. I would like to find a ...

made my brain hurt too much, LOL

sounds like a shoe-in for SNMP
@Josh you aiming for Strunk & White badge? :)

@TomOConnor Copy Editor actually :-)
No, in honesty I just like improving questions
I am surprised I don't have Copy Editor on SO though, I edit all the time over there

there's only 2 unawarded badges.
one is to hit the daily rep cap on 150 days.. Ouch.

1:23 PM
I'm aiming for 12k SF rep by the end of the year, but if I don't get my lazy ass out of the MSO Tavern and start answering questions it'll never happen, LOL

and the other is to have been a fan when it was in Area 51.
which nobody will ever get.

@TomOConnor Give Evan a few more days.

@TomOConnor not gonna happen, that one!

yeah

I would have been a fan! Badge please!

1:24 PM
@Josh are you doing Wesley's 10k in a year challenge?

;-)
@TomOConnor unofficially, yes
And failing, LOL

@Josh I think all of us except for Phil are failing :)

What the devil happened there..

When I agreed to sign up, I decided that getting to 10k would be good enough for me.

Same here :-)

1:25 PM
all my messages just got prepended to the top of the page.

@TomOConnor reload. Chat must have had a seizure
it does that to me sometimes

Strange.
i wonder if it bugs Jeff Atwood that his users rep is so much higher than his.

@packs Since I decided to try it, something strange has happened. Instead of gaining rep on SF, I have started gaining it by leaps and bounds on MSO! My rep nearly doubled since the start of the year, LOL. I think I'm doing it wrong!

@Josh Just retconn it to be instead of SF MSO instead. Or all sites combined!

@packs haha, I could do all sites combined. That's usually how I roll, trying to evenly balance my reps (and areas of expertise)

1:28 PM
Occasionally i pop into SO
but i only wanted to increase my Rep from 1 to +100 or so

I'm normally on SO, I'm a programmer first and a Sysadmin second. I know, don't beat me!

A: Should dev be admin on their computer ?

ZypherShould they? That's up to the corporation. Personally I think it's fine as long as there are some understood rules. Being admin on your box is a privilege NOT a right. Catching viruses on multiple occasions will get the right revoked Disabling corporate agents will get the right revoked - AV/...

A: How To Limit User Quota Bandwidth to 10Gb/day

Bilalhello. Im facing the same problem. I am trying to calculate the total bytes sent to the user before he actually stopped the download at certain point. How can I accomplish it ? @pauska XMPP all the way!

What happened to this question?

@GregD it's somewhere in that mess of cables...

Smells like a diamond delete....

@TomOConnor: It's a dupe, close it

@GregD Question title just reeks of "subjective and argumentative".

2:34 PM
@Iszi I also think the question has been asked before, perhaps worded differently.

Short answer, IMHO, is "no". Their administrative rights should be limited to separate, test systems.

@Iszi It would depend a lot on their development process, and how many environments are actually in use. But yeah, in general admin rights in dev? Sure, np. Test and Production? Let's tighten up the rights a bit.

@packs My statement was more particularly geared towards "Should they have rights on their regular office workstation?"

I was just making a distinction between dev and test.

@packs Ah, good point.

2:46 PM

anyone else with an iDevice having issues with the app store?
Is the VZW wave murdering it?

@DanBig Fine for me (but I'm in Europe)

i have several apps that need an update, but the downloads and connection times are atrocious

'Need' or 'want'?

3:30 PM
Not sure of the difference in this case
Both, I guess?

Unless you really NEED it then just wait it out - guess there's either something up with their site or your link to their site - either way nothing you can do about it other than try a different connection

I NEED MY ANGRY BIRDS!

There's talk of an Angry Birds movie - I'll see that right after Transformers 3

@Chopper3 Or 2, or 1.

grumble... something caused my workstation to reboot last night. Now all my library caches have to rebuild. freakin' performance drag...

3:46 PM
Transformers 2 is the only film to have given me a headache - I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than see #3

The first Hulk movie did that, but I'm willing to place at least part of the blame on the theatre's sound system.

@Chopper3 Am I the only one looking forward to #3? All I want out of it is a marginal storyline, robots, "cool" graphics, well choreographed fight scenes, and lots of explosions... that alone would put it miles ahead of the 80's TV version.

@Chopper3 don't tell @BartSilverstrim that, his gravatar will cry!
;-)

@ChrisS Yes, my son calls the first one "Attack of the Easily-Rendered Polygons" and the second one "Revenge of the Blurry Cube, Cone, Sphere and Teapot"

@Chopper3 but... extra credit for cool shaders? :)

Q: Is there a diff/merge utility to compare binary files and synchronize data bit-by-bit in either direction based on differences in binary data?

purefusionI have a tricky dilemma. I've got some files on two different destination drives, copied from the same source drive. The source drive had been failing, so I used dd to copy over the data to one destination (with options conv=noerror, sync which fills error'd blocks with zero bytes) and I used ddre...

I don't know which is worse - the question or the first answer - serverfault.com/questions/232765/average-response-time

"Dear ServerFault, does anyone have a magical happy tool that will tell me which bits should be zeros and which bits should be 1s in a file to make be into the program I want?"
I don't have the heart to tell him that his algorithm in the question will result in a file that is all 1s
(at least in the pathological case where one file is the bitwise NOT of the other file)
whup, now his comment made me break out the "pathological case" stick. sigh

@voretaq7, he needs a tool that will do a bitwise OR on his two files, and send the computed output to a new file
Or that is how I read his request.

@Zoredache that's how I read it too, except a bitwise OR won't "fix" data loss -- there's no guarantee data didn't turn up a 1 instead of a 0, or that the bitwise OR of two files will give the "correct" original file

@voretaq7 did you really just point us all at jquery?

@Chopper3 It has a marketing site now!
:-)

@Chopper3, I think he wants us to notice the typo.

oh I see
for a horrible second I thought he was doing a "looky at my new toy" thing :)

@Chopper3 I don't do UI. Haven't touched Javascript in almost 4 years now :)

Ben
You actually have to go to jqueery.com and click (anywhere).
Is everyone running links?

@Ben of course they are. They all know better than to click on anything I post!
Site could only be better if it randomly rickrolled you

I see Drobo have a 12 bay box now - only 3 x 1Gb NICs and it's retailing at $8.5k - does that seem steep to you guys, for a product that comes from a so-far predominently consumer-oriented company?

5:55 PM
is that 8.5k with drives?

no

That seems very steep then...
Last time I checked I can get a 12 bay cheapo iSCSI enclosure for 4-5k

$8.5K for an empty shell with 3 gigabit NICs and some software? Highway robbery is more like it.

actually it either only has 2 x NICs or they've not updated their specs right - I suspect the latter as the tech specs state 8 slots when it's clearly a 12 slot box
what I was thinking too

drobo makes some nice hardware, but it's not worth that much

6:05 PM
looks like new ipod classics due soon, stock's not being replenished - about time, my old 160GB one for the car is on its last legs

Oooh, Patch Tuesday is out.

That's an hour early!

Just three criticals. None of them look to be remote exploits. MS11-003 has patched all the IE zero-days.
Anyone got any info on when 2008 R2 SP1 is coming - I could really do with using Dynamic Memory on live servers (been testing in the lab) but I don't want to go live on the RC if I can avoid it.

My Speak'N'Spell's not had any patches since the 80's goddamnit - think of the unpatched exploits!
@RichardGadsden oh yeah, forgot about dynamic memory, they're catching up with vmware bit by bit I guess

@Chopper3 There's probably a botnet running on your Speak'N'Spell.

6:14 PM
I wonder if anyone's licenced the speak'n'spell as an ipad app yet?

Yeah, Hyper-V in R2 SP1 is looking pretty nice. And it's a lot cheaper than ESX.

@RichardGadsden how so?
unless something has changed drasticall last time i looked at it they where pretty price comparable when you matched up the licensing for all the features

@RichardGadsden yet 3-4 years behind functionally, it might be cheaper but I get such a good discount from vmw and would need 50%+ more hosts using HV anyway that it's not worth considering

Oh yeah, HV is best for mid-sized solutions - can't yet compete with VMWare at the top end.

or in a linux environment

6:18 PM
... or when you need reliable ha
ducks

True, but Microsoft and linux not really a good combination.

so you're right, in a 99%+ MS house, small deployment, with no vmw discount structure, no HA/FT/sVM requirements then it's a pretty good deal

@chopper3 Yeah, which is me.
And you can do some HA (fHA - for fairly High Availability ?) with SCVMM.

Great news, I was born in Warrington near you by the way, and one of my mates is one of St. H's favourite sons - small world

I should update my bio - I've moved to Manchester now, though I still grew up there.

whereabouts? had a place in chorlton 20 years ago - you'll be a red I'm guessing?

Yeah - Hulme.
I decided that walking to work was a good idea.

it's come up (a bit ) there if I recall, wife's from heaton moor and we used to go up to see her dad all the time but he pegged it last year

It's come up a fair bit in the last 20 years. It used to be very Moss Side-ish, but not so much any more.
Council did a number on the place.
Just looked at your bio - you built BT Vision? As the Russians would say, vov.

6:30 PM
vov?

It's a quote from Stephen Fry. (the Russians say V for W).

anyone know the name of the service that lets you post yourself as a freelancer sysadmin, people bid on jobs, etc?

not single-handedly - just the data centres, network, san, server farm and overall design - MS did the main software, though not for its replacement (called YouView), much to their annoyance

@DanBig elance is a big one that i know of

@Chopper3 what's the replacement run on?

6:32 PM
And yes, I'd be using VMWare for a huge-scale project like that too.

although ... from what i've seen of those you have to have WAY cheap rates ... like not worth the time rates

@zypher, i'll look into that, but there was another that I'm trying to remember the name of

@DanBig I thought they'd banned that sort of thing from Craigslist these days ;)

@Chopper3, I have given up on the erotic services years ago.
This is actually for a buddy of mine, hes a programmer and is looking for side work, and i seem to remember the sysadmin site also had programming gigs.

@Chopper3 My virtualisation deployment is two physical servers and about 40 virtual ones for miscellaneous services in the office - completely different worlds.

6:35 PM
@RichardGadsden it's not launched yet due to BBC Trust delays but from our side it's all HP BL490c's, virtual connect flex-10s, EVA 8400's, ESXi 4.1, Cisco Nexus/MDS, Oracle Linux, then some custom code by Massive and theplatform with a bit of W2K8 in for DRM stamping
@DanBig it was mentioned on here once, can't remember by who - Warner perhaps?

@Chopper3 Any smaller and I'd be over to Xen, but if I'm paying for Windows licenses for the virtual machines anyway, Hyper-V comes along for the ride for next-to-nothing.
@Chopper3 Isn't YouView the thing that lots of STBs and TVs are supposed to be supporting in the near future? I love the fact that the only thing you use MS for is DRM. Pretty much sums them up.

OnForce
I just recalled it.

Totally understand - I do big/expensive/high-profile but I can't do what 95% of what people on SF can, it's much easier when you have DNS people, DB people, offshore minions etc. but you get away from the coalface, that's why I come to SF, to keep an eye on what's really going on
@RichardGadsden yes, bbc, itv, c4, five etc. standard STB defs, portals etc. technically it's not hard but politically it's like running in treacle - nobody can agree on anything
Re:DRM we're doing multiple flavours, MS is one - we use Windows for some other things too - vCenter and CommandView leap to mind but most is OEL (which is just rebadged RHEL)

am i remembering correctly BBC is eventually going to stop blocking it's content from being seen by people outside the UK ?

I thought it did that now tbh
I can ask them on Thursday

6:45 PM
hmm last time it tried it was still blocking (right around the new year)

I cheat for US TV, I have a Tivo in the US on a commcast cable tv thing - well worth the effort, get to see all my favourite stuff right away :)

at least for the Dr. Who Xmas special it was blocked
haha yea
I'm thinking about setting one of those up at my mom's house so i can watch my 'local' sports team after I move

Oh I read that wrong, sorry, got it the wrong way around - no I don't believe they will unblock any time soon - their licencing agreements are way too complex yet similar to change without enormous work - and there's no support from the Trust so it won't happen for AGES

bah

Didn't know you were moving? where to?

6:47 PM
ah moving up to NYC from Philly

Closer to work!

cool, whereabouts?

haha
not sure yet ... ideally i'd like to be in manhatten
but ... we'll see how that works out

I was up on w84th for a year, nice part of town - where are you looking?

yea the commute isn't horrible but ... the plan was always to move up here, commute wasn't so bad so i'm just letting my current lease run out
havn't really started looking yet going start in a few weeks

6:49 PM
any chance of a share with any of the FC guys?

i think most of em are married

And not in Manhattan if what I heard is correct.

yea that too most of the SO/FC guys are in Brooklyn

shame, tribeca's gone too expensive too

yea my sister is pushing the East Village ... but i think that's just so she can stop by and bug me to pay for dinner and stuff easier

6:51 PM
@Chopper3 it's all gone expensive :-/

what's morningside like these days?

buy or rent?

oh rent ...

I'm not sure if Joel buys.

How about McCarron Park :)
where does he live?

6:55 PM
Upper West Side i believe

heh, I'm strange about real estate -- I refuse to rent unless it's substantially cheaper than buying. You can get nice places in queens/brooklyn for slightly-less-than-rapacious prices

Heh, that's the thing. In Manhattan, renting is substantially cheaper than buying.

that's where I was, mind you barclays were picking up the bill - actually you've just reminded me, I'm over your side the week after next for a couple of days, so no mod'ing for me sorry

yea, and ... i don't want to get tied into anything for 30 years right now either :)

yeah but you build no equity :-) Buy a nice condo in Queens, pay what you'd pay to rent in Manhattan, and in 10 years sell it for more than you paid (especially with the market still in the tank)

6:58 PM
@voretaq7 I quite like Fort Green actually - I have a friend that lives out there

@voretaq7 god an hour and a half commute
i'm trying to SHORTEN my commute

one of my cousins is just south of there in Park Slope
's a nice area

I was just going to say park slope too!

@Chopper3 no worries @sysadmin1138 is eager :) where you heading to this time around?

Queens is an hour and a half?

6:59 PM
DC :(

hour and a half? You're looking somewhere other than Astoria or Flushing then. Don't Do That! :-)

ahh damn sooo close
