12:00 AM
@MDMarra :EATS COUPON:
::RUNS::

@voretaq7 You don't go home until 7PM?
Okay, time for me to eat and then try and salvage some real work for the rest of the night. Today's SF personnel issue sucked my day up.

@WesleyDavid Agreed. I have to write a bunch of stuff in PS tonight or explain to my boss why it didn't get done haha

@RebeccaChernoff adobe.com/products/air.html QQ

wrong air (:

I have kerberos tickets for the empty realm. How did that happen?

12:03 AM
Also on my to-do list: work on making #ServerFault on Freenode.
Or maybe that would be copyright infringement... how about #ServerFuckingFault - that might work. =P

@RebeccaChernoff I would never leave you, you know that.

@RebeccaChernoff say oy ... you know you want to!

@Zypher Can I be a chat mod? pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepl‌easepleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease

@WesleyDavid meh, I'm on freenode (:
@Zypher you think I'm gonna act on cue? wtf dude. q:

12:06 AM
@RebeccaChernoff You're like Savoir Faire - you're everywhere.

@RebeccaChernoff ... yes?

@RebeccaChernoff Flagged for profanity and attacking a mod

@WesleyDavid yeah...so pretty sure that's already old.

@RebeccaChernoff Shutting up.

@WesleyDavid no need, i have a php project ready for her to work on

12:07 AM
why do you torture me? ):

@Zypher You are a mean, mean man.

it involves wordpress and openid ohhhhhh yea :)

Oh sweet! @RebeccaChernoff While you're at it, that means you can work on my blog too!!

@RebeccaChernoff I use blogger. I expect a version for my blog as well

@Zypher ...because I haven't wasted enough hours on that already?

12:08 AM
hahaha

yawn
Okay, time for foods and then a night of catching up

dammit @Zypher. you mentioned php and scared @WesleyDavid away. that's not nice of you!

php does that

amen to that ):

how does gaming.SE's chat have more lines than here?

12:14 AM
uh, they talk more?

@Aaron what do you mean by more lines?

more lines of chat

I'm presuming the all-time messages stat

I thought we were pretty talkative in here
I guess not
english.SE does too

Were they a site at the launch of chat?

12:15 AM
@Aaron it's over 24hours so our chat tends to center around working hours EST

If they were a site at the time chat was launched, I can see that. If they weren't, I'm impressed.
People that make emoticons backwards freak me out. The eyes go to the left of the mouth.

@MDMarra q:

GAHHHHH
Is this room permaflagged? I see a blue notification next to the room name from the list of rooms, but when I click on it, it says that there are no flags.

chat flags get out of sync sometimes

this room probably should be permaflagged......

12:31 AM
lol

@Aaron Then, everyone would ignore it.
BRILLIANT

This will make my life better: webmonkey.com/2011/12/…

@84104 As long as there's a way to decline it in WSUS, I agree
If not, it's a nightmare.

@MDMarra My situation is probably a bit different. See I have to support actual personal computers.
Not the only things I do, but one of the more frustrating.

12:54 AM
So. Who here knows about espresso machines.

@ScottPack Not I.

Useless!

@ScottPack I've been called worse things by nicer people.

Too shay.

No more drama? :(

1:03 AM
@pauska No more of all that llama drama!

@Aaron You take that back! You take that back right now!!
@pauska It's 2AM, go to bed.

@84104: eh, We standardised on FF at my dad's office back when MS didn't realise the whole 'we need to actually update our browsers' thing
also that any 'corporate' resources we have are either installed by me (roundcube/company website) or so old that it dosen't matter (sqwebmail/imp)

sqwebmail? That's like Chernobyl levels of fail. Goo on you for using roundcube.
I need to move all my sites and services to my dedicated server and I'm prolly going to go Zimbra

1:18 AM
lol
@WesleyDavid: we're using crappy shared hosting, can't get them to move off it for now

@MDMarra I'ma lurker and proud. I'm not gonna pretend to be a know-it-all, as much as I'd love to be xP

basically I'd rather they use roundcube and fall back to the other two. they use sqwebmail first, imp as a fallback and roundcube as a last resort

@JourneymanGeek Shared hosting eww.

I didn't set it up. I could probably do it cheaper if not for inertia, honestly

@JourneymanGeek I know how it goes. =/

1:20 AM
@WesleyDavid: eh, especially in a small office environment, and you're the boss's kid...which isn't a good thing ;p

@JourneymanGeek People patronize you? "Oh, he's only here because his dad owns the place."

right now is especially bad. We're pondering downsizing (we have had a horrible year), so i can't get anything done
the other way around ;p
I don't get paid, so, i really am only there cause dad owns the place. It also means i can't threaten to quit. The systems there are pretty much geriatric, and could fail at any time, there's no organisation support, or planning or any of the nice things that makes an IT guy's life easier

Wait, your dad patronizes you? "You're only here because I'm your dad

lol
no. Its "I have a problem with X, could you come down?"

Ohhh, okay. So do you do IT work professionally?

1:23 AM
errr... If i got paid, it would be professional ;p

Okay, I get you. I have been in the same place. I got started as a volunteer
Did all the work, got no pay for it.

To go against @MDMarra, I'ma change my name too xD NO ONE WILL KNOW ABOUT MY LURKING LULZ

Well, here's the thing. I'm fine with the lack of pay

@Shads0 We shall call you "squishy"

@WesleyDavid Flagged for calling me fat

1:25 AM
@Shads0 Flagged for using two 'f' words
@JourneymanGeek So can you market yourself to other companies in the area to get a paying job doing what you do?

What i really would like is a little structure, and funds/support to get things we ought to do down. I can half our hosting costs (and get better, bigger mailboxes) by switching over to a VPS. If we're going to keep the business, we eventually need new systems, I can't keep the ones we have going indefinately, since they are so old i can't even dumpsterdive for parts

@WesleyDavid Flagged for fighting fun fighters fudging feasibly fascist faces.

@WesleyDavid: well, that and its family.

@JourneymanGeek What kind of monthly cost are you looking at for a VPS?

@WesleyDavid: honestly? I can do everything we do for 15 dollars a year + moving over the domain name

1:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek Holy cow, $15 a year?

a year.

VPS?!
Are we talking about one of those micro 128MB VPSs?

pretty much, thats enough ;p
hell, i'm paying about 30 bucks a year for what i use now... that'll be cheaper too
I'm using these guys now buyvm.net haven't had any problems once i actually got a VM (they run out of stock pretty fast). I basically need a simple as hell mail setup for... 3 people, and a static web page (we run a wiki cause i can't be bothered to do web design, but no one actually updates the ***ing thing)

@JourneymanGeek Okay, so do you admin the site with a shell or do you use a control panel?

at worst, i can offload the database duties elsewhere. We're paying something like 120 bucks a year for a domain, crappy 250 mb mailboxes (nowhere near enough) and outdated software
They use some sort of control panel by parallels
Shell works for me

1:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek Eww, Plesk?

I can't remember honestly.

I do no like Plesk at all.
What distro are you most familiar with?

Well, if i was running one site, plain old shell works
anything debian based, unfortunately
(I need to learn the red hat way of doing things eventually, more marketable)

@JourneymanGeek I was just kicking around an idea. I mean, I've got a dedicated server I'm building from the ground up. It's not got a cp or anything. Not even a LAMP server yet. but it's CentOS
It's hosted in Tampa Bay Florida though, so about as far from Singapore as you can get.

At the moment, everything is frozen

1:34 AM
Hivelocity.com is who racked it up.

Even my proposed, no cost backup plan
(to them, it uses stuff i already have on hand)

@JourneymanGeek Heck, for such a small deployment, I'd feel like a jerk charging. =)

XD
If we get a specific contract (which means we would need to keep the company as is), then i might have leverage ;p

I'm wondering about carving up some OpenVZ containers.

until then, augh...

1:35 AM
I've only got 4GB of RAM in it though - I'd want to get 6, but hosts rake you over the coals for RAM

"2GB more? That'll be $30 extra a month!" >_<

@WesleyDavid 6 usually

Actually, if we had a static IP, i could run everything off the little atom box i have sitting in the office (can't do mail for it)
grouches

@voretaq7 Oh, I did my time conversion wrong. Keep forgetting that I'm in mountain time for the next five months

1:36 AM
The perils of the very small network sysadmin
if i can call myself that

So what the hell happened in here earlier? (am I allowed to say "hell" still?)

@JourneymanGeek You can use a dynamic DNS system - but I think for you it would be a service that costs.
@ShaneMadden Flagged for saying "hell"

Solid.

@ShaneMadden Things were said. Kittens were eaten.

@ShaneMadden meh. blah blah drama blah blah. move on. so how's the weather? (:

1:38 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Said she was disappointed in all of us and wouldn't be sending us any Christmas cards. We cried.

@RebeccaChernoff COLD. >_<

@WesleyDavid: I have DNS set up. Run a script that updates the IP address every so often with wget, has worked perfectly for the past two years. Have had no downtime. However dynamic ip addresses can't run mail services cause of spamblocks

@RebeccaChernoff Raining. Starting to cool back down to winter.

I'll have to peruse the transcript if I'm bored later.

Its understandable, but oh so annoying

1:38 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Cold. Supposed to warm up tomorrow though, might finally melt some of this snow.

@JourneymanGeek Straight up crunk, bro. You had to use a script with wget to update your dynamic IP? Okay, you're a SysAdmin. =P

I want snow.

@ShaneMadden DONT SAY THE S-WORD!

@RebeccaChernoff Yeah, freaking cold here. It's 55F right now and sometimes gets into the 30s overnight. that's not okay with me.

@RebeccaChernoff Hush you! They have SUVs out here in the suburbs!

1:39 AM
Did someone say SCVs?

@voretaq7 Man, we had trees collapsing under snow two months ago.

Snow season is taking your life into your own hands every time you step out the door.
Never know when a Canyonero will go careening off the road into you

@Shads0 SCV Ready.

@Shads0 SUAVs (SubUrban Assault Vehicles)

If it's going to be cold, I demand snow.

1:40 AM
@WesleyDavid: actually, i scrape the IP address off my router with w3m and cut, since the transparent proxy i use breaks most ip address detection... and run the script every so often with crontab... its embarassingly ugly, but it works, somehow

Otherwise it's just miserable cold.

@RebeccaChernoff If I recall your area right, you tend to get a lot more ice than snow, ja?

@JourneymanGeek Nice. Ghetto to the max.

@ShaneMadden I need to ladder again, I was becoming a decent silver Terran, prolly couldve gone gold, then just kinda stopped

@RebeccaChernoff its miserable cold anyway! 20 minutes after the snow stops the traffic turns it into a narsy black-gray slurry
<- would probably like snow better if he wasn't a city rat

1:41 AM
@WesleyDavid: working around my inadequecies ;p

@voretaq7 I work from home, it can snow all it want and f up traffic. (:
@ScottPack eh, usually "wintry mix". so yeah, slush that then just freezes.
this year though, we've got zilch of anything besides rain.

trying very hard not to hate you right now.....
Nope. Hating you. And your hot chocolate in pajamas while watching SUVs go careening off the road.
Set up a webcam so I can watch the cars crash. Put a mug of hot chocolate in front of it for me.

@Shads0 I don't have the time and dedication for it. Was platinum, but haven't played much in a while. Probably get back into it when heart of the swarm comes out though.

@voretaq7 For the past few years my town has been running low on salt, and very large stretches of the roads are brick. So they don't really plow, so much as scrape off the top layer of snow, then throw down cinders.

I will live vicariously through your carmageddon!

1:42 AM
I feel sorry for the bicyclists.

@ShaneMadden I just try to have fun, though, getting better is always good

@ScottPack We never have enough salt. or sand. and our plows drive around with the blades up because they're afraid they'll hit something and break the springs.

@voretaq7 also don't forget not having to wake up way too damn early and be in the office by 8:30. q:

@ScottPack Who does large stretches of brick road where it snows? Did someone smack whoever made that decision?

so winter is pretty much just driving hell.

1:43 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Ok, I was right. I have family in your neighborhood. We're much the same, except you guys are more likely to get ice than we are. Sucks.

@RebeccaChernoff don't have that problem :-)
<- 10-6, nominally

@ShaneMadden We typically only get plowable snow about twice a year.

@ScottPack oh yeah? whereabouts?

@ScottPack Ah, that's not too bad then.

I will never have snow ;p

1:45 AM
@voretaq7 What's your drive to work like?
Long ways?

well if i do, we are all doomed, for i live near the equator

@RebeccaChernoff Webster Groves

@WesleyDavid 20 miles. Variable between 20 and 120 minutes.

@JourneymanGeek I live in the Arizona desert. We get snow once every decade for maybe five minutes.

@ShaneMadden It just puts us in an unfortunate spot. We reliably get snow enough to make it worthwhile to know how to take care of it. But not often enough to really put the money into preparing.

1:46 AM
@ScottPack just down the street

Plus I have family in the Lake Eire snow belt. I find it disturbing that their sidewalks are bone dry with 2 feet on the ground.
@RebeccaChernoff It's my wife's family, really, but we used to do the upcoming holidays there. Timing sucked, since we made the requisite custard trip in the middle of winter.

254 minimum 283 maximum 264 average @WesleyDavid

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, that's about what I was expecting.
You've got like a 22,000 mile round trip.

1:51 AM
Singapore to Tampa Bay is a 10376 mile flight according to travelmath.com
Add some zigs and zags.

32 ms for my office mini server (which i don't do much with right now) , between 203 and 755 for my vps , in canada
so not too bad ;p

I'd like the IP I posted above to be removed, but don't want to flag it and freak anyone out
@RebeccaChernoff could you do the honors for me?

well, delete it ;p

Yeah, deleting posts is all wibbly wobbly timey wimey

@RebeccaChernoff Huggles.
Hrmmm... KVM or OpenVZ...

1:55 AM
virtualbox!

ESXi

@Zoredache Well sure, that's the serious answer.
I was a little disappointed to see the HCL for v5. My 3ware raid controller wasn't supported anymore.

This would be for spinning up VPS-style containers.

@WesleyDavid: KVM if you ever need to run windows OpenVS if you want to go linux only
KVM sounds more fun tho

Ohh, didnot know about the Windows hiccup. I wasn't planning on Windows VPSs though, so that's okay
@ScottPack And your wheat is revived. You're welcome. Qock.

1:59 AM
well, iirc openvz would only let you run linux VMs
so windows/bsd/fun obscure os du jour...

@WesleyDavid Did I forget to harvest? Fockle

@ScottPack ಠ_ಠ

@WesleyDavid Hold a tick. I don't have any crops waiting to be harvested. What are you talking about?

Hi folks in this room! I'm passing time while I install updates on a test server. How's it going? :)

@ScottPack There were two withered wheat crops that I saw and revived
@techie007 Much nicer especially after today's earlier tiffs, spats and general viking rampages. =)
@techie007 What kind of server and whatcha testing?

2:03 AM
@WesleyDavid Well you know what they say about vikings.... Horny hats... :)
@WesleyDavid It's a Windows 2008 R2 VM that I'm going to install SharePoint 2010 onto. This is round two after VBox failed miserably..

@WesleyDavid Not for me. I've never planted wheat, nor are there any ready for harvesting.

I'm using VMWare Player (for now), it's working much better...
Go Sharepoint installer, go!

@ScottPack Oh, it must be that other Scott Pack from Athens Ohio then. My bad.
@techie007 WSS or MOSS?

@WesleyDavid Yeah, he's a rather unsavory fellow.

@WesleyDavid Well, I'd answer you, but I have no idea what MOSS is. :) It's SharePoint 2010 Enterprise. It's the first time I've been blessed to have a reason to bother installing SP, and I haven't even gotten to my options yet. ;) (Prereq's right now).

2:10 AM
@techie007 I think MOSS is the pre-2010 way of saying "SharePoint 2010 Enterprise" =)
MOSS was Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, which was the pumped-up version of Windows SharePoint Server (WSS)
Some of the live-editing features of the web-based editing tools in SharePoint 2010 look snazzy. They went all Google-docs

Gotcha! :) The ridiculous part is that the entire reason I'm installing it is for a To-Do list for some basic project management! Sad, but the licence is free if it works out, and it might also give me a reason to try my hand at "SharePoint Integration" programming (which I picture to be painful, like Office automation). :)

@techie007 You know, SharePoint gets a bad name, but in my experience from WSS 3.0 and a little beyond, it's not worse than any other behemoth software product that tries to do document control and also be a platform to manage enterprise workflows.
If you work with it, it can be great.

I've just never had a reason to collaborate with my fellow employees beyond what we do in person, and it seems that neither have our clients,,so I've just never had a reason to use it or judge it either way. :) I'm guessing the Outlook/Exchange integration features will be top-notch. ;)

@techie007 Oh yes, the Office / SharePoint integration is pretty kewl.

2:25 AM
We're supposed to go install a 15-piece network at a new office so they can be open for Jan. 9th. We found out today they won't have a floor until then, let alone furniture. good times... :)

@techie007 Wow, awesome. SO you're a technology consultant?

No, I'm the guy who does everything but sell. ;) I work for a long-time VAR turned MSP.
We consult, supply, monitor and service servers, desktops, and infrastructure devices. 99% Windows.
@WesleyDavid What is it you do to pass you days?
*your

@techie007 Well, for about a year and a half I've been an independent IT consultant / MSP

Where-abouts? (I in London, Ontario, Canada)

However, I got a bit tired of the small jobs and micro-clients and decided that I'd see what other opportunities existed out there. I was either going to go whole-hog into the MSP side of things (Which I don't like so much, I prefer projects) and then have a three year plan to hire people to do that for me while I try and bag larger projects, or just go to work for a larger consultancy that can use me in bigger, more awesome ways.
I'm in Phoenix, Arizona.

2:38 AM
Nice. Yeah the "SP"
ughh me drunk..

@techie007 Yes, this job can drive a person to the bottle, that's for sure. =)
Currently I'm in the interview process for a place. We'll see how that goes.
And another kitty enters the room!
head bonk

Yeah the MSP thing can suck. And it has, but I keep my clients happy, and the boss finally found some guys who seem to know how to push it, so we'll see.. Been there 13 years now, so I figure I"ll give it a little longer before I just start shootin.. I mean.. looking elsewhere. :)

Wait, where's @TomOConnor - we need a Big Cat in here.

@techie007: where exactly do they expect you to install the hardware? the ceiling? ;p

@techie007 heh. MSP to me is deathly boring. I actually find more satisfaction from designing the management systems and automation that keeps the MSP side of the business running. Actually answering phones and replacing toner cartridges for clients is what grates on me after a while.

2:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek You gotta wonder. :) We have to establish mounting hardware for the desks as well.. :/

Bloody hell, what the hell happened in here earlier today? Looks like an all out war

@MarkHenderson Just some soul searching... and chair throwing. Mostly chair throwing.

Hey @Mark.

I'm trying to follow the chat transcript, but it's just all over the place

@MarkHenderson Had a good summary around here somewhere...

2:44 AM
There was an awful lot of overbearing finger waggling too.

@WesleyDavid - fair enough. I see a lot of fuck words :P

flags @MarkHenderson

@MarkHenderson Flagged for swearing!

(Don't worry I'm not here to kickban anyone who drops an fbomb :P)

I do believe messaging everyone does get a bit confusing ;p
especially when rooms have evolved their own cultures

2:45 AM
@WesleyDavid I enjoy that side as well, and for the most part, am the only one who can/does it. :) I have been working on a Portal/dashboard for the customers for a couple months now in my spare time, along with rewriting our web-based RMA submission app (redoing it from Delphi to ASP.NET+jQuerycoolness). fun fun..

eww delphi

I didn't even know you COULD flag people in chat

@MarkHenderson It appears that a small population of users, only one of which is a regular, had taken issue with the profanity and subject matter that was being used of late. Instead of talking to us about it, it went to meta. Then, flags started flying in chat - I believe by people who were not regulars and did not understand the personality and culture here...

I've never seen any flags appear
I missed all the fun :( I remember seeing something about that before I went to bed

...then mods from many other sites showed up, had conniptions, banned people out of hand and generally made fuckwits out of themselves.

2:46 AM
Srsly? Mods from other sites showed up here to deal with our flags?
Hmmm
That's uncool

@MarkHenderson Yarp.

I usually ignore flags i get. Though i was a little o0 over the one with that one with almost tasteful nudity ;p

@JourneymanGeek It's not about the language or the IDE my friend. ;)

@MarkHenderson Chat flags go to every mod on any site who is logged onto chat, as well as random users with more than 10k SEI wide rep.

@techie007: Isn't delphi that pascal dialect?

2:47 AM
My faulty for not spending enough time in chat then

@MarkHenderson So apparently there are now like two or three users who don't ever even show there faces in here who have taken it upon themselves to be the voices of feigned moral superiority and say we shouldn't say certain words.
Because "what if a 14 year old came in here?!"

Well, it's lovely to see you on this fine, fine morning.

That 200KB stand-alone web server app built in Delphi has run error free for 6 years. :) And yeah, it's Object Pascal, "Delphi" is really more about the IDE and it's auto-from-generating goodness..

End quote.

auto-FORM-generating.. :)

2:49 AM
@MarkHenderson If you look over at Tom O Connor's starred quote you'll see one of the biggest instigators --->>
Said person also got in a row with Chopper and was the straw that broke his back and helped him to decide to resign as a mod. sad face
So, it was overall a shitty day here. Chop leaves under bad circumstances, we get called out by people who aren't even here in chat, and one who didn't take it with us directly, and then mods from other chat rooms come in and start shooting people on sight.

In short, the ides of December will live in infamy on Server Fault.

@WesleyDavid AND THEN REBECCA SAID "OY".

@RebeccaChernoff Oh, you're still here!
Yay

the end. (:

wtf chopper resigned?!
Fuck me he did too

2:52 AM
YAY, SharePoint install is done (I think)... Man I'm glad I missed the drama... Now I remember why I stopped IRCing.. Oh, that and I got a g/f... ;D

That makes me mad

:/
@techie007: IRC drama can be fun
like the time someone's autokick script went mad

@JourneymanGeek If you're into that kind of thing. Personally, I pretty much can't stand dealing with anyone's drama.

... damn it, my desk seems to be threatening to fall apart

We need to have elections quick smart then, because although you can't see the mod stats, that pretty much only leaves sysadmin and myself monitoring the whole 24 hours

2:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek I BBS'ed man, I got sick of chat-drama before the turn of the century. ;) heheh

Now gossip I am in lust with, but drama I despise.

@ScottPack: there's the good kind of drama

And sysadmin and I overlap quite a bit in our active hours, so there is possibly large chunks of the day when there won't be any mods

@JourneymanGeek Now stop being silly.

the ones where its the machines rebelling rather than people getting their ****ies in a wad

2:53 AM
@MarkHenderson we needed to add mods anyway tbh
you guys are way overloaded

@MarkHenderson Which is unfortunate, because that's (largely) the US business hours that will be left unregulated.

hm, site or chat?

just judging by what we can see and the data explorer
@JourneymanGeek I'm talking about site
@RebeccaChernoff BEWARE: We have stars again.

thats quite... scary. SU has 4-5, and most of them are active

@RebeccaChernoff - should I pop off an email to team@ to ask them to run an election soon?

2:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek One of the things Chopper was mentioning a while back is his answer rate was through the floor because of the workload of doing "mod stuff"

@voretaq7 in that case...
user image
4

@voretaq7: eh, thats common with most mods

@RebeccaChernoff mmmmh.... ok yeah I'll star the bad kitty.

So, is there a page that actually shows the list of site mods?

@RebeccaChernoff but ONLY because I spent today doing software work fixing 500/Internal Server Errors as a result of a Ruby 1.8->1.9 transition

2:56 AM
Plowing through the users pages looking for diamonds is silly.

@RebeccaChernoff Excellent

For the record, ':' is NO LONGER A VALID SHORTHAND FOR then, and the postgres gem is deprecated. I CRY!

@voretaq7: one of the things that got me at first was that
