1:23 AM
these colorization assignments are a lot more challenging and time consuming than I expected

so is life in general
Nothing energizes me anymore 😥

Still have so much more to do :(
@johnp what's wrong?

ah nothing, just very tired all the time...
that looks good so far
if you use a masked gradient map it'll get rid of that monotone skin
even just on the cheeks and face

I still have a lot of work to do
Just laying down base colors right now

looks well. where did you get the pic from

1:34 AM
two people already finished

oh cool. reddit has some fun stuff for design... there's a paint-me reddit where people upload selfies to illustrate

the crazy part to me is reading the workflow. A lot of them do the entire color on a single layer and just paint over mess up and such
creating folders and layers and keeping track is a bit of work but I have to believe the long term pay off of having them is still ultimately faster

lol for the colorization? i used to be like that with painting but now i try to commit to about 3-4 layers

I already have more than that

maybe colour gradients + lumo masks are the way to go

1:52 AM
finally, a roll out

💰💰💰 ? @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ :P

actually, yes $-$

nice lol

ya, really going far on 11 dollars with google adsense this month, lol
anyone paying for a private guthub account?

opensource guts....nom nom

1:57 AM
you're talking to the two most non-web people on GDSE lol

lol

I seem to have scared everyone away

you are Darth Vader

guess cai got tired of me asking him, hey hey hey hey hey hey hey, lol

1:58 AM
said the spider to the flies... >:)

think CAI has been traveling. I could be mistaken on that

I'll be staying well away from web stuff for a while

Piebie too

and for my b-day I got a lego tie fighter, boom
yes I play with legos biatches

lol i was gunna suggest Ryan make a macro rail with lego the other night...
think there was one on youtube lol

2:00 AM
lol Im going to build my next plugin in star wars lingo
these aren't the people Im looking for. . .

4 hours later…
5:58 AM
hello @joojaa

Hola

how is Finland this morning? Can you see the Aurora?

Cloudy, an no not this time of the year, and rarely with light pollution in city. So after dark, at teh outskirts on a clear winter day yes sometimes

Ah right, it was supposed to be visible here and in other places last night... Probably some solar flare or magnetic tomfoolery

probably but we had a cloudy night so nothing would have been visible anyway. Havent looked up space weather for this season yet. IM currently hunting for Halos instead of Auroras

6:24 AM
¬_¬ So tired of these supposed design curators. If they had any sort of design education they wouldn't make conceited claims like "Post-modernism is dead/a trend"

What comes after Postmodernism :)

One only has to look at modernist architecture designed for the "ideal human" to realise that it's fascist in nature

We have a naming problem with our stuff.

history is doomed to repeat itself, I guess @joojaa :P

Perhaps you should not use time as a qualifier for names

6:28 AM
I want to reply to that guy but I dunno if there's much point if they're not up for any real discussion other than namedropping famous designers and jumping on their bandwagon

SO names like fast, new, modern, contemporary are bad monikers for items as moniker surroundings tend to change

I'm not interested in the names, but the ideology

I dont know if you are correct by the way
Obviously many modernists were living in a gae of fachism. But were they untimnately fachist or just affected by the surrounding realities

Modernist design makes presumptions of what/how the end user should be. Post-modernism recognizes that everyone will interact with a design differently. Think about usability and people with different accessibility needs.
that is why it annoys me when people say that postmodernism is a trend
it's too early for the frownies ¬_¬

6:49 AM
@johnp Well no modernism does really do what you describe. Sure, they strive to make humans into some form. Which arguably can be a good thing if done right, just that the prevalent views on the world were from our perspective a bit misguided.

Postmodernism however seem to revel in the thought that each individual has the right to his own views and is equally correct. This to me is too extreme. However postmodernism ranges quite much so a lot of postmodernist is between these extremes. Again there were modernists who were certainly were not fascist and trying to make humans into one mold.

One of the main principles of modernism was an orientation to a perfect future or utopia. The problem is, who decides what utopia is? Universal grand narratives are dangerous things

Perhaps, but only because you do not get to decide ;)

exactly
there are many similarities between fascism and modernism....the attitude towards history. Those who control history, control the world

No your right for obvious reasons, however i do wish the current world would have a bit more visionaries to choose from. Humans do need some direction id just want there to be something one could follow to steer the world. Everybody unto himself seems to cause a drop back to mental problems we had in middle ages
So if everything is as good then there is no reason for me to get better after a point. And that is a very dangerous idea. We already see this in place, where leaders decide stupid tings just because all solutions are equally right.
They are not

Yeah that is a problem these days. Institutions, businesses, anything with power seems to become tainted by it eventually, and it's hard to trust any of them in a postmodern world. But if you can't critique power, then that is a frightening thing

7:49 AM
@johnp im using my Friday by doing the retouch thing @Ryan posted in the BG

oh nice, the colorization thing or something else?
im currently skim reading a layout book before diving into a booklet project. it's been a while and i feel rusty. also the tutor for this module is a horrible man which doesn't help

Well i probably going to airbrush im just laying over a powder skin effect right now
Some things like the nails need separate treatment

nails can be tricky if they're bad lol
i really wanna try out the face liquify tool even though im morally opposed to that level of retouching xD but it has the same kind of macabre quality as watching a car crash
on the other hand i have a pic i took of a groom with a miserable expression on his face as the bride walks up the aisle that could do with a liquified smile

After 5 minute powder and quick blocking

cool

8:00 AM
direct shadows need more blue and skin hue/incidence variation is missing

yeah recolouring shadows can be tricky
still not sure if it's even possible to fix that sketch that was starred in my dropbox... tried fixing proportions with liquify but then fixing the stretched paper texture is the problem
i know a certain amount of resketching is needed but i want to minimize that as much as possible

8:46 AM
@joojaa! You changed! :O

8:58 AM
good moaning, Vincent

moan?
am I that annoying? :P

no, referencing the french policeman from 'Allo 'Allo lol

ah. That was from before my time.
Well it wasn't, but I never watched it.
Know a couple quotes only by popcultural osmosis :)
good morning to you too, @johnp

haha osmosis
oh i'd kill for a red bull now @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ
when doing printed type design, do you use a modular grid or just a column grid @Vincent ?

@johnp column grid and baseline grid

9:07 AM
indeedy

uh... what's a 'modular' grid?
sheepish laugh

i always try to make a hybrid of that and a modular grid but i can never get the modules to align to the baseline without a lot of effort ;(
it's when you divide the page into modules
sorry i didnt mean to say that. that looks sarcastic xD

@Vincent changed what?

i posted a question on this ages ago. i shall search

@joojaa your avvie!
@johnp ah those. Haven't tried them yet

9:09 AM
they're awful!
when combined with a baseline grid

My customers usually want too much content in a page for them to show :)

ha

I can't liiiiiive without a baseline grid

neither can i

Well i have a bit of work here as my predecessor left tha stuff in a bit bad state

9:10 AM
but i like the consistency of modules

I guess my results tend to look a bit modular-ish
@joojaa well, way to prove you're better than them :)

happy friday folks! :3 youtube.com/watch?v=F1-SNrbVFW0 (NSFW)
baha though i dont like gaga... ^ nsfw lol

@johnp please eidt that nsfw in right after the link ;)

haha
aw sorry, my edit timer is up
is that dependent on rep? it's a little annoying

I think it's a room owner priv

9:16 AM
ah ok

@Ryan <- Doing on background gave the sky a color wash
Original

not a bad job

lots to do ive only looked as the skin of the arm so far
@Vincent well im starting to be happy with the hand i shouldlighten the under forearm and palm a bit then i can move over to the silk band

I like the rather muted colour. Most colourings are too saturated to my tastes

yes well you get that if you just use color mode. IM actually using a clor pick of her own skin in a old picture with a gradient map

9:28 AM
nice tech

Presumably the black and white filter they used kills red and brown completely so i think her dress is eithert black and blue or red and light gray?

@joojaa no, it's gold and white :P

Yes thats a possibility she likes yellow
and gold
Didnt find that dress though
no to eat then home
Bye

cya @joojaa

wave

10:30 AM
I hate audience research ¬_¬ when you're not designing for web or have access to analytics, it feels like pretty much all data is questionable at best
and as for legibility research, it's all very inconclusive

11:30 AM
to say the least. I'd add 'subjective' to that latter subject as well @johnp

definitely lol
messing about with national statistics and google trends by region...again seems very unreliable
what sources do businesses use...dont IBM have some sort of marketing statistics database?

dunno
fun thing is that marketeer don't want to know about the unreliability and some see Google Analytics as the new Wholy Grail

yeah i just hate plucking audience personas out of thin air xD

Persona! :D
/gamegeek

11:48 AM
:( i dont understand

Persona (Japanese: ペルソナ, Hepburn: Perusona), also known as Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, is a series of role-playing video games developed and primarily published by Atlus. The series is a spin-off from Atlus' Megami Tensei franchise, and was originally based on the high school setting of Shin Megami Tensei If.... The first entry in the series, Revelations: Persona, was released in 1996. There have since been nine further console titles (five main entries and four spin-off titles), with the latest, Persona 5, being released in 2016. The series takes its title from the beings used by characters in...
it's one of my all-time faves

ah i see
btw Humans is starting again on CH4
did you watch the first series? youtube.com/watch?v=wvnrD3MHz4s
haha well all the info i need is here for just 1750 euro euromonitor.com/consumer-lifestyles-in-ireland/report
not bad i guess if i was a large business
hehe

12:35 PM
@johnp nope, already have too much too watch :P
@johnp 'just'

lol, it's good but not great anyway

1:05 PM
rar
@johnp im drinking a red bull and Ive put a post it note on it with your name... for john.. or.. I drink the souls of my enemies, lol

it's the thought that counts!

1:57 PM
any plans for the weekend?

sleeping, type layouts, chinese colouring pencils
you?

2:13 PM
anyone wanna make a couple o' hundred bucks? :P
these will be available for pre order next week...they should sell on ebay for about 200-400 dollars. the 1/6 scale ones sell for 800-900 currently

@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ lots of games and finally getting all my back movement, well, back

@Vincent what you do to your back?

Threw it out last Sunday X(
Happens every three years or so

ouch, I know the pain, sorry to hear it.. muscle related?

I'm used to it, I've had scoliosis my whole life
yeah, the only symptoms left now are the fact that everything is all tensed up
it's getting better. How is yours?

2:28 PM
pushing it to the limits working out lately. my desk does help

@Vincent I played a couple new games recently, XCOM and King of Tokyo

@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ brave!
@JohnB haven't played the first, how did you like the second? :)

light fun and easy, a stark comparison to XCOM which was not light or easy :P
we lost on the tutorial -_-
it's a lot of mechanics to absorb, but once you get going and understand the roles it's not too complicated

it does look very cool
it's co-op then?

yeah

2:42 PM
but... Nintendo hard?

I think my biggest frustration was with the app. There's no rule booklet, the app controls the flow for you. But one app on one guy's small phone for four people felt a little claustrophobic

I get it
then you'll want at least a tablet :/
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ you have a flexdesk now?

exactly. Or perhaps if everyone could download the app and join a game lobby or something so everyone could read what's going on

I have an adjustable desk.

that would be awesum yes
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ so you can both stand and sit?

2:43 PM
yes

sweet!
@JohnB let me know if you play any more of it, I'm curious
looks really cool

we probably will, I'd definitely like another shot now that I understand it better

But... if you can play this, you can also play Pandemic no problem

hehe, still trying to get a solid group of 4 for Legacy

2:45 PM
I can't remember if I told you I bought and played the original

@JohnB no you didn't :)
congrats :D
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ sweet!

they have an app now you can control your desk from

it's more machine now than desk...

lol

well I got it close enough
I quote that all the time :D

2:48 PM
how did it treat you, @JohnB?

It was fun! I think I've played it 3 times now, twice as Medic and the other time I don't remember
I do like being the medic
the difficulty feels very dependent on getting the "good" roles

It's a very directly powerful role
Hm, that's why, in legacy, you can choose your roles every scenario

ah ok cool!

I do really like the dispatcher a lot as well
Dispatcher + Medic = synergy

yeah dispatcher is awesome, I think my top four are Medic, Dispatcher, Researcher, and Scientist
the rest are meh

2:52 PM
huh? which others do you have then? Operations Expert, Contingency Planner?

and Quarantine Specialist

ah ok
I won't say nothing about the Quarantine specialist... Don't want to spoil you ;)

hahah ok :D

3:18 PM
@JohnB how is the weather up north? we are 50s this week

Rainy all week but the temperature is perfect for climbing

oh nice
you mountain bike ride, too?

nope

you ever sleep on the side of the mountain yet?

like suspended you mean?

3:21 PM
the ultimate hammock experience? :P

I'd love to but those portaledges start at about $600
and there is so much other gear in line to be bought first

ive always wondered if there was a backup for failure

multiple, definitely

that's bizarre
imagine rolling in your sleep...

3:23 PM
hope his lady doesnt kick him out of bed, lol

haha you're tethered in, you wouldn't roll too far

"...for in that endless sleep, what dreams may come?" - Hamlet :P lol

....that can't be comfy

hey, bright side is john will be able to escape the zombies

lol

3:24 PM
in that picture they are attached to bolted anchors on the wall. You could hang a truck from those, a couple of people won't cause it to fail. but yeah, definitely a minimum of two backups but could be more

lol

i wouldnt be surprised if one day someone built a home on the side of a mountain like that

I think I saw something like that but I'm pretty sure it was a CG render

well Corbusier built houses on stilts cus the earth was "filthy" lol. it's very possible

the future home of a Bond villain

3:29 PM
imagine if the ceiling leaked in that kitchen

well you wouldnt need a AC for something like that

hah
oooh, I forgot Luke Cage premieres today

dont these sheer cliff housings actually exist as fortifications in the agean scottland alps and china

3:55 PM
I keep forgetting in illustrator how to move two anchors inward or outward at the same time
ah, you can do it with scale but that relies on the scale panel

I've been geeking out on stats all afternoon @Vincent you might find this interesting cso.ie/en/statistics/socialconditions/…
if you select them both with the selection tool and resize holding alt does that work @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ ?

@johnp nicely designed
bit garish but quite nice

lol yeah. the Dutch seem to be happier than us

I forget that at times

@johnp even when we have a reputation for nagging and complaining? :D

4:10 PM
oh i thought you had a reputation for being happy and laid back? :O
ireland are awful complainers
if you ask someone how are you they say "not so bad"
lol
did you ever go WOOFing @Vincent actually lol. I thought it was a euphemism when someone mentioned it to me

@johnp WOOFing?
The Dutch also complain a lot

yeah you stay with a family- usually on a farm, and learn the language
wwoof.fr I think it's free, you work in exchange for accommodation and everything...
i like the idea of living near monte carlo growing vegetables lol

4:46 PM
@johnp never even heard of it
closest I've come was AirBnBing

supposedly it's quite popular, i think a few countries do it
id love to get fluent french so i can realise my mediterranean dreams 😍
