12:02 AM
Just got the final sketches from the costume designer, and they're beautiful.
Trying to think of ways to include the interior detail.

10 hours later…
9:45 AM
hey Team Western Europe: it's Friday!

1 hour later…
10:56 AM
M'rr. My client wants to put my poster art on a digital billboard, and the folks in charge of the billboard need my "Photoshop PSD (with layers)" so they can make the billboard file themselves.
I compile my final layouts in InDesign; Photoshop is for creating elements, not assembling them.
Should I, like, export my InDesign composition into Photoshop for them?

1 hour later…
12:21 PM
@BESW hi! Well, if that is what your client wants...

I'm just not sure if that's gonna give them what they're actually asking for, I guess.
I've dealt with the folks behind this billboard before, and they're... not very good at defining what they want clearly. They ask for very general things ("the Photoshop file") and assume it'll have whatever they're after.
They were very disappointed the last time I tried to accommodate them.
Oh, well, burn that bridge when I get to it. [pokes poster design]

I know these types of clients, you can never truly make them happy, so don't bother trying much

It's not the client, it's the third party the client needs to use in order to get my work on this billboard.

or that

12:38 PM
I just lent out all 24 projectors

1:00 PM
@PieBie TGIF!

I don't think the G has much to do with it, but thank him anyway :)

@BESW They probably mean any old *.jpeg
oh yeah. That should be TJIF.
but then, I'm a Whedon junkie :P

to me it's TTFSMIF

lol
don't forget the tomato sauce

1:09 PM
colander off to you, sir :)

@PieBie I love that show

massive DNS outages across the internet, I suspect some sysadmins are having very rough Friday mornings

everyone who knows it loves it

@JohnB that's not good

I spent too long this morning trying to determine what was wrong with my connection when I couldn't access Twitter -_-

1:14 PM
Hm, they seem to work for me, even sites I've never visited
some people were rather quick

yeah back up for me now
was down for at least an hour though

seems to be mainly impacting US East

1:46 PM
sorry all, I release a project, lol

Project Death Star? :P

bwhahahaa
Happy Friday gents.

tips colander

it is a great fall day here, mid 50s.. little cold breeze, just refuse to drink anything pumpkin

only a week more of pumpkins

1:50 PM
week? here it's a month more, we have thanksgiving so the remaining of the pumpkins are used for pumpkin pie or other recipes

ah cwap

2:04 PM
got to admit this is pretty awesome though, @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ

2:20 PM
kewl
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ A very merry Friday to you too kind sir.

2:35 PM
And now rumors think Mac isn't going to have HDMI either, just a single USB-C and a pro model with 4 USB-C. Headphone jack is also getting questioned

3:15 PM
Mac just wants to be wireless. no strings attached :/

@Ryan I get the point for the non-pro model, but they are kinda taking the professional out of Pro
actually hmm, does the 2015 pro even have HDMI though?
ah yeah it does, I've never used mine I use DisplayPort

@JohnB yes it does
the 2015 pro has two thunderbolt ports, usb, audio on the left, and hdmi, usb, and sd card on the right

right

3:38 PM
At this point I might be more excited if they announce a new iMac instead of a new Macbook
or something like a lower level Gn since that's far out of most budgets

For some reason, today Adobe insists on having all fly-outs from right-click menus to the left instead of the right which is mighty annoying
I hope that fixes itself with my next reboot

4:05 PM
I find adobe cc a little buggy...

^^ Can we nominate this man for the understatement of the century?

:3

And on that bombshell it's time to end the show! Good weekend everyone!

I notice it when I close most apps they kind of hang for a minute, then appear to force close
lol cya next time @PieBie

have a good one @Pie

1 hour later…
5:28 PM
@PieBie good weekend for you
later all

bye

ut oh, might be ordering a copy of Windows 10 now: Bash on Ubuntu on Wndows

5:49 PM
Windows 10 seems to be really on the right track.
My main hesitation at this point is Malware/Popups

there are onlly popups on the bad part of the internet though :P lol
i wish windows moved to linux years ago rather than this weird flirtation with ubuntu they have at the minute

@johnp watch the video from the link

There's popups all over. Even my Mac now is getting bombarded with bogus "Update your Flash" suddenly
just started within the last few weeks and I haven't changed any of my browsing or anything

hmm i dont get any popups really unless i go into a dodgy site
had a quick skip through @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ It's like an emulator of sorts?

I used to watch Basketball on questionable site but I haven't even done that for like 2 years now

6:00 PM
naughty things and torrent sites will always have popups xD
it's like they know

Well next week Ill see what Mac announces and how my annual review goes
if mac releases something exciting Ill get it probably unless my annual review goes really really well in which case Ill get a 2 bedroom apartment and a desktop

best of luck with it, hopefully it works out

they already gave me a significant increase in role this Monday so I'm hopeful
thats part of why I haven't been as talkative in chat --- very busy
I have an assistant now too which I'm not really happy about and have to find busy work for her. She's not really qualified for much of anything

aw lol. teach her one thing really well maybe

Wish I had my Wacom Pro here. Was trying to take a few minutes to finish up a digital painting I started but its just not as good on regular Wacom without tilt
She thinks she knows how to write and the plan is for her to do testimonials, press releases, and possibly ad copy
Her grammar is okay, maybe as good or even better than mine for proofing. Need to try to work with her on getting better at new ideas though

6:20 PM
oh @johnp I'm going to create a makeshift studio in my living room on Sunday and shoot some stock photos. Not sure how itll go without flash. Might end up buying one. Might hit you up for help since you've done studio and flash stuff

had to close my browser there...installed the new affinity. ah cool :) yeah sure, ill help if i can lol. depending on whether u want to use ur own lighting id suggest getting a good blackout blind for your windows, unless you work at night

I'm borrowing a trifold setup for product photography to use
Probably won't shoot this weekend because I'm getting the stuff Sunday evening. But going to prep

oh nice, like one of those desk setups? or something bigger
i didnt know what to get at the time so i got a lightbox

hey @Vincent you're in here late-ish

yeah, I'm at home on the old laptop

6:28 PM
the college studio was so booked out i ended up working in my flat lol. but they're handy to have for glossy objects like jewellery, glass, metal, etc

yeah a desk setup

it's evening here

my mom's husband has one he never uses so borrowing it and going to take some photos to hopefully put on a stock website

how are you @Ryan?

might rent a flash or purchase one
I'm exhausted and ready to go home! you?

6:29 PM
post-exhausted and relaxing with the bf gone from home tonight :)

I started online dating again (lol). I need to get fit or face a life of loneliness and dogs everywhere

@Vincent sounds like a good time to have a drink and sketch / paint / write / read

I'm sifting through my Magic cards.
with a drink and some relaxing triphop
@johnp keep at it! It's how I met my bf!

what triphop you have on? do you have a soundcloud playlist?

Don't know wether it's actually triphop, but it's Archive
and I do have some likes in SC, but I don't know whether they're public

6:39 PM
Online seems to be my only hope with my rural reclusive lifestyle xD
My sister met her husband online
I have a spotify, and a soundcloud but I haven't used the later in a long time

warning: depressing lyrics :)

well seems soundcloud got hit in the big DNS attack this morning and is offline anyways

ah yeah that's what JohnB said. Seems to have hit East US mostly though

^ I love the music videos they post. Then I sometimes end up wandering around Vimeo looking for others

haha warning: cheesy&depressing stuff open.spotify.com/user/1160270814/playlist/…
oh i thought u were sharing ur profile @Vincent

6:46 PM
no, I don't have one
Haven't felt the need for Spotify yet

nice.

I feel like it should be 3:45 at least... its 2:45 :'(

love the animation too
huh? the version you linked to is 4'

I mean the current time, sorry. Sad the day isnt done et

6:49 PM
ah ok

nice animation...reminds me of the one for Tame Impala youtube.com/watch?v=wycjnCCgUes

@Vincent yeah thats why I like the ones Dezeen shares. Usually interesting animation and they're blog generally discusses the artist and some of the behind the scenes along with music I can usually enjoy

any good stuff planned for the weekend?

In that particular one it says the person spent 3 months on it often working on his bed as it was his first big project after graduating

that lends it personality :)

6:51 PM
@Vincent supposed to go to a friends tonight to play games. Then tomorrow supposed to photograph a friends kids final football game (not at all looking forward to this), halloween party tomorrow night, and seeing my mom sunday evening
Really only thing I want to do is go out sunday morning because we're finally going to have a cold front :\ supposed to drop to the 50s here. The rest I don't even care about I'm so exhausted

gonna be able to catch some sleep?

I got not white haha
for sure, hopefully, maybe. I might not go out tonight
What about you? Any plans?
of course doing a buzzfeed quiz wasn't on there

playiing D&D tomorrow. First time in ages
playing Magic on Sunday. relaxing weekend

7:07 PM
ooh D&D for firs time in ages. Rolling a new character then?

no, finally continuing an old campaign
I'll play my bard again. Pretty happy about that.

cool, that sounds fun. Wish I had gotten more into D&D but never got far along

It's a lot of fun, provided you're on the same page with your group about what you want from the game
and of course if you have a nice group :)

it would probably depress me now
the girl that I was severely depressed about was a big D&D player. Sad as it is I still pretty much avoid anything that reminds me of her :\

7:23 PM
eh. I can imagine.
I am happy that I can still listen to Archive. This record got me over a real big crush.

Relationships are a story we tell ourselves - whether they be true or untrue. I kind of find that helpful @Ryan ever seen 500 days of Summer?

nope never even heard of it

it's a movie with Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Dechanel

heard of that one, never seen it

it's good, been a while since I've seen it
it's not really a romance flick lol

7:31 PM
Maybe if I don't go out Ill watch it tonight... if its on Netflix or Redbox

I think I've seen it pass by on Dutch Netflix, but I'm not sure
And of course that tells you squat about US netflix
so I'll just stand over here

you should go outside Vincent, assuming its dark there. Johnp too
there's a meteor shower

it's overcast

ah. Here its likely to be a little overcast but more importantly too many mosquitos

i think it's overcast here too but ill check again after midnight

7:47 PM
I just want to go home already, pour a drink, and finish this

lifts glass cheers in advance.

is that a painting or painted over a photo? :o

whatever it is, it's gorgeous

Painting over a reference photo that I took. When I'm done there won't be any photo left.
Going to do a series of them

very cool

7:54 PM
Thanks and cheers @Vincent

ýou know what would be cool @Ryan

going home!

if you got a rose for a week and photograph it decaying over a week lol. for each photo you could do a quick painting over it

yeah I might do something like that actually while I have the little studio setup in place
going to do as much as I can with it while borrowed

you can probably get an intervalometer app for your a7

8:07 PM
I don't know main things I'm between as far as gear goes is Filters, 35mm Tilt Shift, and Flash
The Flash that sounds the best is pretty pricey unless I'm positive I'm going to put it to lots of use which right now I won't
Kinda he same problem with the others though really

8:28 PM
depending on what you need it for flash is something disposable so i wouldnt go too crazy on it depending on your needs
you can get a very good flash for 150 tops
you only get a few thousand shots out of a flashgun at most
some only in the 100s

the one I heard good things about for use with Sony A7 is the Phottix Mitros+ which has the transceiver built in but its like $400
Yongnuo's are so much less expensive but my understanding is I'd need to get a transceiver separately and I'm not sure if they have any automatic ones

i have a neewer and they included a transceiver
i paid like 45 haha

I'm really thinking about entering the wedding game, it was surprisingly fun, but I'd need at least one flash preferably two

and it's very good!
what you're paying for with extra $$ in flashguns is the faster sync times i think....so your maximum possible shutterspeed with flash. mostly needed for those still life freeze shots of exploding fruit and what not
my flashgun has this red sniper like laser haha. it was great for taking shots in the dark, or for when i had to hold the camera from a height and couldn't aim through the viewfinder

the reviews on Amazon for the Neewer at least for Sony is terrible
Does your flash work automatically?

8:40 PM
ah they may not have TTL for sony, i have no idea
yeah
and manual

The wedding I shot I did all manual but next time I'll shoot in Aperture Priority instead and want a Flash that can handle that without seeing what the lens is doing

for still life you'd need master and slave modes xD i think they may be listed as S1 or s2 or somethin
yeah look for TTL that's compatible with sony

that Phottix Mitros+ is its just expensive

so you could potentially get one decent flash and a cheap one depending
i know I'm captain miser, but I really wouldnt spend that much on a flashgun, it's a disposable item
of course, we are all disposable..in the end 😑

I dont know what emoticon you just tried to use but I can't see it on a computer

8:47 PM
haha sorry, i was just being an existential nihilist

9:38 PM
@Vincent Unfortunately they specify that they expect a fully layered file which they can manipulate.

I'd just work as you normally would @BESW and copy it into photoshop afterwards

Yeah, well, that usually involves flatting my PS work before placing it in InDesign, so I'm gonna modify my process a bit.

mmm it's annoying. people always seem to ask for .psds and they were never designed for this kind of thing

If they'd explain what they need, or what they're going to do with the file, I could make sure they have it!

10:22 PM
finished
hmm actually maybe Ill add a stalk/stem whatever

ooh very nice
it looks like it's floating in water...very ethereal

think it needs more?

hmm? it looks good
one good tip (that i never really got to try tbh as I usually work over my pencil sketches) is to only use hard brushes over layers and layers of a low flow or opacity

I didn't use a soft brush for this

it makes things pop and adds depth. your painting looks great
i know, i can see that. just a tip

10:38 PM
oh ok, thanks. Ya I mostly used soft brush for erasing (rarely do, didn't at all on this piece) or for masking (which I also didn't do at all on this)
This one was really just one layer. A few added layers only because I was scared I wouldn't like what I was trying to do and wanted the ability to delete the change

way back when i tried doing colour paintings i always made the mistake of soft brushes on portraits. I prefer to work with pencil brushes and dry media if i ever do any work now anyway so i dont really work that way
can barely talk tonight. yeah i think the fewer layers the better, forces you to commit to the illustration
far easier to rework something if you need to anyway via real life paper lol
my old lecturer used to say "paper remembers"...very true. even in packaging and other stuff
youtube.com/watch?v=jTk0NtYl56E Been watching her a lot lately...she draws models from instagram actually
thinking of joining it for that reason

watching right now
wow maybe I should've gone with normal pencils instead of these watercolor ones
I've barely had time to use them yet still, been so busy
and this is your old teacher?
she sounds young
whew she's incredible! I really need to spend an hour a day sketching and learning how to draw. this makes me jealous. drawing makes me frustrated though

10:56 PM
oh no haha, she's just a random youtuber
yeah my memories of colouring pencils weren't like this at all till i started seeing what others were doing. but seemingly there is a huge jump in quality with colouring pencils - the wax/oil based ones
you should be able to achieve a similar quality with ...was it derwent you got?

yeah that's terrific I'm going to have to get better colored pencils and some sort of brush for blending
the watercolor pencils you mean? they're faber castell

oh cool
for the pencils in that video^ they're oil based so you can use either methylated spirits or a much safer option - zest it...it's less toxic. I think that's a uk company though so prismacolour or someone probably has something similar over there. It's like an oil painting when you use that, it breaks down the binder or whatever and just leaves the pigment on the page

ahh I had no idea such a thing existed. I'd much rather be working with oils than water

I feel like i have a lot of knowledge of this crap but no experience ;(

that digital painting I did is 486 mb :(

11:02 PM
i wish i was more confident with illustration
lol were you using 16bit? supposedly that's recommended at least, and ram can get crazy

yep 16 bit
16 bit RGB
and yes Ram can be hard. Again, need to get myself a new computer

i find it hilarious that mine's still going xD since 2011 and it's still pretty good. it's a brick but ticking along
i got my brother to blast out the fan vent with a air pressurizer haha
the only thing id want is higher dpi...other than that it's hardly worth upgrading

dpi? huh?

ppi i mean

huh?

11:15 PM
on the monitor

like you want a 4k monitor or a new graphics card?

id just like a closer preview before print of the type
not too much of an issue but meh

11:34 PM

11:52 PM
yep thats me. Just told my buddy I'm not going out tonight. Too tired

that'll be me when i start exercising again :( ah, probably for the best Ryan
i dunno really what to do about exercise... the gym in town is full of a******* and there are evil dogs where i live as far as running goes...
I may try and use the local football field though the idea of workmen laughing at me there isn't nice either ¬_¬
