Well John I do hear he IS a darling.

12:54 PM
@joojaa ?

think thats his way of signifying he's exhausted from exams

arrg exams
working on stuff in a course called qualitative research methods
hating it

1:07 PM
happy friday

\o/
My only work for today was cancelled! So now I only have to do homework and projects

1:22 PM
...i slept in...for four hours... hardly any point going in to uni... :S
i am really good at sleeping

I wish I was sometimes

i am terrible at falling asleep - nightowl - but when i am sleeping.. well, two alarms have no effect
oh, well.. coffee in the sun

one of my roommates uses ~10 alarms each day, sometimes to no avail
thank goodness I am in a different part of the house, I'd hit him daily if he were in my room

haha nice

hey all, happy Friday :D

1:33 PM
hi @Rsiel do not think i have seen you here before? (though i have been inactive for a long while)
hey vincent

I'm curious, but I don't usually have time to participate. - lurker ;)

:) lurkers also welcome
@Vincent did you see the link i shared here last night?

saw, bt haven't read yet

4 days left in the election!

basically; do not charge per hour - relate it to client expenditure

1:37 PM
can the votes be seen beforehand? ... seems like a long time to wait to determine a winner.

no, i do not think so
afterwards, you can see the calculations

SE has pretty dang good SEO

indeed
it is quite impressive
@Rsiel ..which makes sense, really - seeing the tally might influence voting

:2102197 will have to read

@Vincent in short: if your client have 50 employees, paid xxx pr hour, take the pr. hour and multiply by 50: your work will cost the equal of one hour per employee - that might be a language they understand
paid per hour does rarely make sense for creative work

1:45 PM
I still don't follow, but I guess that's cos' i'm doing three things at once atm. :) You say that for a client with 50 employees, each paid €20 per hour, I should ask €1000 per hour!?

no
:D in sum
i mean, you could of course say more: you give a total cost

ah, it's just a tool to relate it to their labour costs?

yes

hm, interesting

to say i will spend xx hours, at xx cost: relate it to their expenditure
your calculation behind the scene might be vaguely related to hourly rate - of course
but you need to say "you spend xxx wages pr. employee, i ask the equivalent of two hours of each of them"
makes absolute sense to me

1:50 PM
making your cost way more relatable

since creative work is sometimes that lightbulb moment in the shower, OR a hard, steady grind
yes - and you cannot really tell when you start, if it is going to be one or the other
clients might balk at "i will spend 100 hours, at xxx $ per hour" - as many sees design as a sticking colours on shapes
....so your client comes driving up in a shiny new car.... have the latest in hardware... and he balks at the hourly extimates

hm. sounds familiar. I just had a good talk with a cardiologist client, who was frustrated at my costs. I had to try hard not to ask her wat her hourly rate is

...that was the basic idea
exactly
but that discussion might often end up being an argument "my work is more highly trained, life-saving"
"all you do is push pixels around"
so the bottom line; do your research as to the general expenditure of the client, and your work will end up being a % of that

nice tactic

it is - but it needs to be above-table from the start of course
so when you meet with the engineering field company, you must beforehand know average wages, costs of materials etc
one example they used was for a large fashion company, and they agreed for this campaign, it will cost the equivalent of one full-colour, full-page ad in Vogue: something like 250.000 USD

1:59 PM
sounds like a lot of work just to figure out wat your customer's price 'world' is

heheh
i imagine it would be pretty straightforward to find average wages for xxx fields

@Benteh Sorry for hijacking your conversation but it sounds really interesting. What's the link you mentioned?

ah, give me a sec, @gburning

@Benteh np

2:00 PM
@Benteh Great! THanks

at least in this country, we have good statistics for wages in various fields
perhaps in the US people are more forthcoming with what they spend, but it should be doable other places too
"Our fee was equivalent to what he was paying the plumbing contractor."

Q: What methods can I use to create balance and consistency between a group of differing logos?

RyanA regular challenge that I face is balancing two (or more) logos. Whether they need to be equal or one needs to be given priority. Some logos however might be squares, others rectangles, circles, etc... As a quick sample I snagged a nice high resolution photo from Unsplash and pretend its going...

10 upvotes, 3 close votes haha

:D

I can downvote if you want :P

I love it. I understand the close votes, but I think it's a good question. The answer imho is in the middle between science and gut

2:30 PM
morning, folks

Hey, Cocky

hey, @cockypup

@Benteh that is crazy : (

not that that's good, but there are much worse things going on in the world

it is one really sick, deliberate one that can be decided on a personal level

2:34 PM
there are still much worse ones IMO
abortion being one of them

ah; we are not going to go there

well, I would buy them all and free them, the animals I mean

awww @cockypup

@cockypup and make them keep doing it?
they'd just get more animals

does one horrible thing negate another being horrible?

2:35 PM
@ZachSaucier good point : (

"good luck charm" - christ
@gburning no it does not
grading the evil in the world on a scale would be ...well...

yeah, i don't think that's the way to go

"good luck charm" .... right. superstition gone mad

it would actually make me fill I am carrying bad luck around

what's the current stance on font identification questions?

2:39 PM
i would feel sick every step
on the other hand, i heard a hilarious suggestion, to flood the Chinese markets with free Viagra, to stop rhino hunting: i find that hilarious, as someone would be in for a shock as viagra apparently work - as opposed to rhino horn or tiger bits or whatever.
@gburning urrg
MUST show effort
the way i do it; if it is a new-new user, i give them a little time to show effort, edit question, follow font-ID guidelines.
if they do not, close with no further ado

@gburning there is a meta with the guidelines, I think, and was recently edited to include an example of a good font question

if not-so-new users, i vote to close pretty much immediately

I answered an Adobe Help Desk question today : ( I am a bad person

Makes sense!

2:41 PM
@cockypup hahaha

all these similar icons make it hard for me to glance and see who's talking
even with my custom person message coloring xD

@ZachSaucier Thanks!

what colour am I?
gee, I sounded like one of those quizzes, "what Disney princess are you"?

Haha
Beige for boring?

2:45 PM
beige is a good colour for a pup haha

@cockypup rgb(16,94,106)
it's auto generated

lol

@ZachSaucier teal : (( worse than beige

Oh, I thought you meant the avatar backgrounds

@cockypup lol, I like teal. Not that dark of teal, but I still like teal

2:48 PM
@gburning * shock * you meant my avatar is boring? no love for a dog

I went on another date with the girl I used my date app initially with
it was a lot of fun

cool! where did you go?

@cockypup :(
@cockypup Baby, your avatar is perfect. Never change.

@gburning and it is "mushroom" colour, not beige. lol

@cockypup If you say so.

2:51 PM
actually, it is a very boring 4 o'clock in the morning sick of this gray-beige

:D
i probably have the most boring colour choice

white? well... based on a recent question you have no colour at all
haha

ah - true!
very "designerly" though clearly a non-choice

Just to be clear, I like it. The "boring" comment was in reference to your comment about disney princesses and saying that something is beige usually means it's a bit boring. At least around here.
Sorry, just channelling my inner Canadian as not to offend anyone.

@gburning hey, I am just joking : ) I am Canadian too so we can go at the apologizing game no forever.

2:55 PM
do not think we are that easily offended
...brits will beat you at that game :D

well, not unless you criticize my illustrations of snowmen. there I draw the line and eat you alive lol

IMPOSTERS ABOUND!

Well, while I have a lot in common with you fine people (mainly moose and ice hockey) I am not Canadian
snap

@Benteh HAHA!

2:57 PM
@gburning du gamla du fria?

Keep it civil, @Benteh

:D

Du fjällhöga nord indeed

awww

@gburning hi

2:57 PM
God save the queen I guess

HAHAHA

@Ryan What up?

@gburning Not much, got to kill an hour and an afternoon. It's being feisty though; might have to take it out back with the shotgun.

@gburning Oh I know you are not Canadian, you called me boring * laughs secretly *

@Ryan Dern afternoons, always sluggish.
You mericans and your gun laws though

3:00 PM
@gburning its 11am here

@cockypup True. I prefer the Swedish way of being passive agressive and then apologizing profusely when danger approaches
@Ryan So, it's yet to be killed?

i lived in ireland and uk for a few years, acquired the
"would you like some tea?"
"oh, no thanks"
"oh go on"
"well, i think not"
"it will be no trouble"
"thank you very much but i am ok"
"ooohh, gooo ooon"
"ach, ok, maybe a little drop if you are going to make it anyway"

hahaha! that is amazing! you can have so much conversation about nothing

@gburning unfortunately. Just 1 more hour then lunch then shipping then home

@cockypup it goes on and on and on and on and on; it is imperative that it is all the way filled with apologies on both sides

3:03 PM
@Ryan Sounds nice. Free time. Has a nice ring to it. Will have to put it on my "to do after graduation" list

hehe - students either have no time off, or time off all the time

@Benteh Precisely. But as we're doing our graduation project now I'm leaning more towards the former.

:D familiar
we call it DRUB (Døgnet Rundt Uten Betaling)

I am from Cuba, so it goes like this back home.
A: would you like some tea?
B: no thanks, I am fine.
A: But I made it already, have some.
B: Nah, I think I will pass
A: And why is that?
B: I don't feel like having tea...
A: Oh, I see, my f**ng tea is not good for you.
B: No, actually I don't like tea at all!
A: Then why the hell have you being drinking my tea all this time?
B: Because you are so freaking pushy, that is why.
A: Well, you can say goodbye to tea for the rest of your live, I will NEVER brew tea for you, not even if you are dying on a hospital and begging for it like a dog

Haha
So you're danish then?

3:08 PM
LOL
@gburning norwegian

that was the Cuban version

"i certainly do NOT want your shitty coffee, it is worse than your godawful tea!"

hahahaha

@Benteh Oops. Well, I had a 50/50 chance

yup, goes on an on too

3:09 PM
@gburning no worries

sometimes, I am glad to be Dutch. Blunt and simple.

Haha

hahaha

I think I want to move to Cuba now

we do a similar passive agressive as gburning explained...

3:10 PM
Where in Norway are you from?

..so it was a shock for me coming back from ireland & uk, and getting:
- do you want some coffee?
- no thanks, i am fine
(end of conversation, not getting any coffee, have to watch the other person drink delishious stuff)
just outside oslo

haha

Haha
Cool

I had a friend in University that actually integrated the Cuban way of interacting on an application. It was hilarious, because she did not mean it as a joke haha

the _polite way_ would be, if you want coffee:
- would you like some coffee?
- aaaeeeeammmeehhh ...maybe a little

3:13 PM
she went through pains to count the times an application asked the user the same thing
the third time, the application answered something like "we have asked you this three times, so now we will never ask for it again"
and that is it
there was no go back
gone, hated forever

impolite:
- would you like some coffee?
- sure! great!
(perhaps why we find americans in partics blunt and impolite)
@cockypup hahahaha class
would love to do that

haha. amazing. I think here in Canada we are not that polite then... unless I never noticed
it is amazing how little things are perceived as polite/rude in different cultures
elevator ethics was a big one for me when I came from Cuba to Canada

the brits find us rude, but not as rude as germans, and they seem to have a soft spot for dutch, @Vincent

yeaj, I kind of noticed

@cockypup hahaha, class

3:17 PM
Brits would be very easy to make friends with if there weren't so roundabout

the brits forgive you a lot of bluntness, for having delightful accents and being in general a very cool country

Dutch-accented English is... horrible

@Vincent i find it enjoyable; but i think i play that game pretty well

I used to live on the last floor of a building here in Canada. In the morning I used to say "good morning!" to everyone that entered the elevator. I learned very quickly that it was inappropriate. By the last floor I was the only freak saying "good morning!" in an elevator full of grumpy people.

they find it endearing
@cockypup hahaha! i can imagine
@Vincent perhaps not as bad as danish-english

3:19 PM
hehe -- people here are amazed when you greet them on the streets

people do that to some extent in ireland and australia
which can be hilarious

@Vincent ha! yes, that was the next one. saying hi inside the building was fine. saying hi at the grocery store, sure. saying hi on the street, outrageous!

class!

fun thing is, I now have my office in a village, and people are way more used to being greeted here

...and busses? NOOO greeting!
@Vincent makes sense

3:21 PM
would it just be that its Friday fun day but the 5 guy brigade change their names and avatars to match the Village People for a month..

mastering the art of "just right" social interaction in UK and ireland can be hard work
@Matt HAH - who is the five-guy brigade?

^^

well I was going to ask.. Vincent, Ryan, John, Zach and I.... mostly the ones here almost all day =P

:D
...and guys

just for some site humor for a month

3:23 PM
not during elections, @Matt :)

splendid idea, and show some humorous support of gay guys

oh no of course not..

Ha! Vincent, see, there is no way of escaping the Village People

lol

I strangely don't mind

3:24 PM
uuu aaa... it was a quote from simpsons @ZachSaucier

I call INDIAN!

but when you change your name, and people @ -you, it will not change when you change your name?

@Matt I saw that one coming, would look great on your avatar!

ya temporarily I believe

:D

3:24 PM
@Vincent you might get your card back

its either that or this weekend Im going to change my name to Darth_Vader with an avatar that has vader and the background of said avatar matches the pink from our site logo

You know you're procrastinating when you're cleaning dust from your computer mouse with a pencil instead of working

@Matt I'll do it

@cockypup hehe

finlad är platt ergo inte i skadinavien
bye

3:25 PM
@joojaa va?

@ZachSaucier so thats three, two remaining.. @JohnB and @Ryan are you in?

we should have a question we can all answer well too :P

Im going to make a meta post... BOOM

get it featured so all of SE sees it

Psh, mod abuse

3:27 PM
@gburning zapps...

@ZachSaucier such as "is there a good place for a young man to go?"

lol
one person asks it, the others each provide a letter

@vincent @ZachSaucier who are you going to be

ha!

Brilliant

3:28 PM
@Matt sigh I'll call cowboy

what are our options? I ask because I see 6

@ZachSaucier O_O
zach the construction worker
lol

Meeee-wow

3:30 PM
the "clone"
as in "leather jacket, cheesy porn star moustache and cop glasses"
isn't he one of them?

so zach you in?

'course
I'm good with the construction worker

meta up

the main singer looks so much like my friend

true!

3:35 PM
but aren't there 6, not 5?

oh... scott could be the sea dude, lol
I always thought there were five

there is six, yes
Village People is an American disco group that formed in 1977, well known for their on-stage costumes depicting American masculine cultural stereotypes as well as their catchy tunes and suggestive lyrics. Originally created by Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo to target disco's gay audience by featuring popular gay fantasy personae, the band quickly became popular and moved into the mainstream. The group scored a number of disco and dance hits, including "Macho Man", "Go West", the classic club medley of "San Francisco (You've Got Me) / In Hollywood", "In the Navy", and their greatest hit, "Y.M.C...

me too! I was suprised

originally, even 7
Victor Willis (Cop)
Felipe Rose (Native American)
Alex Briley (GI)
Lee Mouton (Leather man)
Mark Mussler (Construction worker)
David Forrest (Cowboy)
Peter Whitehead (nondescript)

ha! nondescript

3:36 PM

this may or may not be what my roommates and I will dress up for at halloween this year, haha

Q: Just a little site fun with some regulars

MattAfter elections I wanted a way for some of the regulars to have some site fun so I was curious to know if 6 guys would like to team up and we could change our names and avatars to match the Village People for a month. So far: Matt - Indian Vincent - Cowboy Zach - construction Positions V...

@Vincent "leather man" lol

go go stereotypes :)

I think nondescript is quite a good stereotype to adopt
"look at that guy, totally dressed as a nondescript"
"I know, all nondescripts dress the same, so easy to identify them"
on a different topic, question:

3:56 PM
lol
'nondescripts should't be allowed to marry!' :P

@Vincent Or adopt children, because they try to turn them into nondescripts
question: I was trying to vote for this question (graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/50986/…) to be migrated to stackoverflow
but when I go through the whole process (close->of topic because->belong to another site)
it only lets me select the meta site, not stack overflow

ya, it doesn't have any specifics (I'd like for one to SO be added)

@ZachSaucier Hi Zach.

@cockypup Just use a custom close reason:

@JasperLoy hi

3:59 PM
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because this question belongs on StackOverflow — Zach Saucier 34 secs ago
@JasperLoy Hey

@Ryan It seems everyone is a room owner here, lol.

only as of recent :P

Congrats!

3:59 PM
Yisela went on a spree
