Well, for sure chat isn't the right place for grievances. But to clarify a potential confusion: the list of rooms is a list of active rooms. To see inactive rooms, there's a button at the bottom of the room list page. The sorting options aren't the most intuitive or useful, but the rooms to which you're referring are visible to everyone who sifts through the list of frozen rooms associated with this Stack.

7:12 AM
Thank you @BESW but the rooms are indeed gone, not merely hidden due to being frozen.

Could I talk to a mod (@Ryan, @Darth_Vader) about this question, the users behaviour and the way I called him out: graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/63630/…

9:29 AM
@PieBie They'll probably look into it now that you've tagged them. It does sound a bit rude indeed

yeah, I couldn't help but think he was spoiling for a fight. So, what with all the commotion going on on Meta, I'd like to confer with a mod to see if I was right in saying so. Could be I'm just making it worse.
OK, he just did it again. I think he's just trying to piss people off. Gonna take Ryan's advice: flag and forget.

Yes that's wise. I don't think you're making it worse. They'll see the flag and might clean up the other comments too
yes.... xD

alright, thanks go-junta! back to work it is :)

See you!

Yeah; as a general rule when someone is being a jerk, it's not a good idea to engage with them. Comments aren't a good place for useful resolution of social conflict.

9:41 AM
what meta commotion?
i must miss all the 'fun' :P

It shouldn't be hard to spot it from a glance down the meta main page.

well, first it wasn't fun ;) And second it's just that some "guidelines" needed to be talked about

I don't think it'd be productive to get into it in chat, really.

You can always scroll back up and see

@BESW: you're absolutely right, let's all just forget about it. I've flagged it, the mods will review it and deal with it. Now let's all talk about something a little more fun :)

9:46 AM
Like "arghhh already thursday!"
For some it's "yay"!

Umm. I finished up this design last week.

Looks great! I'm sure it's even better at full size with the text you seem to have added in your background

Yeah, the text render is a little cheap in the screenshot of a thumbnail. [grin]

hehe we can see it! That's a nice touch

On the final program the background text is legible (but not distractingly so) as two chapters from Voyage of the Beagle.

9:59 AM
Nice! Yeah that's what's fun with this... sometimes you can insert great text and only a few will discover you've hidden a pearl there

I chose Voyage because it covers a lot of different content areas at once.

It's good in programs, people discover your art when waiting

Yeup.

I see, indeed, you had to find something that covers more than one topic. Did you tell the people you do that for or will let them discover it? I guess they asked

Also it keeps me entertained while working.
I mentioned it, yes.

10:03 AM
:)

Part of my reputation is based on finding ways to customise material where generic work would suffice.
For example, when designing theatre advertisements I use colours from the sets and textures from the costumes so the poster contains elements of that particular production.

That's good, you add an extra "layer" or dimension...plus as you said it' fun too
ah yes I see, great idea indeed.
Lot of work sometimes to find something to use and how to integrate it, but fun puzzle though

Thanks @PieBie. Cleared.

Hey Vincent, no prob. Adding to the comunity is what this site is all about ;)

thumbs up

wow you did a lot! Fun projects too, let me have a look
haha Forever Plaid, I see what you did there

The plaid design is simply photographed off the costumes, as is the off-white background texture.
(And the music notes in the background are a song from the production.)

Good job! Not always easy to lay out the text with so many different content

Thanks.
Yeah, the bigger productions with a lot of sponsors and "must have X on the poster" constraints force me to get extra creative.
Some, like the Vagina Monologues, basically had to forgo non-text elements altogether.

yes indeed... tricky when you need to add sponsors logos, there's always a minimum size. I noticed you did very well with the vagina monologue one, so much text but it's super clear with perfect emphasis

10:22 AM
You can also see my own progression, favouring fewer and simpler elements as I got more comfortable with the medium.

yes, interesting to see the progression, and everything is very different

Whenever I have time in my schedule, I try to take a poster as an opportunity to try a new style or technique.

heehee I'm sure you're frustrated a bit sometimes with your 2 green logos

Tartuffe and Rashomon are both "I have a Wacom tablet now!" posters.
@go-junta Haruum. You'll notice that for 134F and 143F I got special permission to use greyscale versions.

Yes, "special permission"! Sometimes it would be cool to just use black and white more often

10:26 AM
They're very proud of their big fishhook G.

bah it doesn't matter, at some point we just get used to it and the logos become secondary anyway
Looks good, I wish people didn't hate Courrier font so much! I mean clients in general

On reflection, I think 154F would have been fun to make the logos look like sticker decals slapped onto the poster.

yeah maybe, but maybe it's less busy the way you did it

But that one had six student directors and they cut my start-to-print time by a third, so....

Funny how you use the paper fold to split your logos on 154f

10:29 AM
Hey, the stock background image had a fold, so I might as well use it...

haha yes I see that but it's good idea. Sometimes design has these fun "coincidence" and end up making things even better

I try not to use too much stock imagery (eg 142S's background is a photograph I took of a woman's hair) but it's not awful when I have to.

indeed, stock pictures are a bit less personal sometimes and are bit too perfect. But using part of them in that context doesn't makes much difference

And yes, constraints are what make artists grow the most.

I agree with that, and the challenge is fun usually

10:33 AM
154F used stock for the dice and the arrow, but the hook is a local traditional design so I made it from photos to match the clip art.

well, I was trying to find you a great quote from Victor Hugo on this but I never remember a word translated in english... I need to verify if it makes sense
Yes I thought so

hmm?

I appreciate the comment! :) @Vincent

So the quote is something like "great artists have chance in their talent, and talent in their chance". Don,t know if that makes sense (Les grands artistes ont du hasard dans leur talent et du talent dans leur hasard.)

@ZachGates any time! font-ids are often done wrong and (very, very) shoddy. So I'm always happy when I see a good one!

10:37 AM
*chance

@go-junta It makes sense! I'm not sure if I agree with the first bit necessarily, but the second one rings true.

@BESW I'm saying this to refer to your use of the fold in the paper earlier. Meaning you found a clever way to use it and great artists see opportunities everywhere

I would translate 'hasard' more with 'luck' or 'coincidence'

And sometimes something you didn't expect ends up awesome.. but you can't humbly get all the credit heehee Well, I like that quote. I can admit not all I do has been planned, sometimes there's a bit of "happy luck" that makes me look like a "genius"!
Thanks Piebie!
These 2 words would fit well indeed, I used google translate because I know hasard has a very different meaning in english :/

'hazard', yes :)

10:41 AM
hehe oh well

exactly: sometimes an unplanned coincidence improves your work greatly, regardless of your talent. But someone talented will spot these coincidences faster
something like that :)

@Vincent I've found myself making these letters by hand, haha

yes indeed, Piebie! That's why I find it amusing when I see people brag a lot as if everything was always 100% planned ;)

@ZachGates ooh, jealous! I love type design but hardly ever find the time for it

@ZachGates It's nice you came here to say thanks! And hi!

10:43 AM
@go-junta I have been guilty of that as well anime sweatdrop

I already did the whole cursive typeface :P

and yes @ZachGates extends hand nice to meet you!

@go-junta Hi!

@Vincent hey it's alright, we're all "guilty"of this. That's going o be our little secret. Mere mortals don't need to know about it!

(thoughts on improvement are appreciated :))
@Vincent Nice to meet you, too

10:44 AM
@ZachGates Nice! Must admit, doing typeface seems pretty scary to me and lot of work!

@go-junta I'm just now passing hour 5.. /:

We're happy some people have the patience and eye to do it! Then we can buy them (maybe)! I don't even know where I'd start

Hehe, I've been sitting here for about 10 minutes trying to decide what the letters A and N might look like

I guess scripts are the most complicated to do too

Yeah, pretty tedious, but hey ¯_(ツ)_/¯

10:49 AM
haha

Music helps

So what's your process? You put some loud industrial music and start drawing each font one by one in Illustrator, and then test each of them with the others or ...?
There's probably an answer on this somewhere, excluding the music choice ;)

scripts seem hard. I usually stick to somewhat geometrics I can draw a template for

@go-junta I'm drawing them with the brush, eraser, lasso, and rectangular marquee in Photoshop
While listening to Future (at the moment)
Before that it was Def Leppard, then Chuck Berry, Eminem, Michael Jackson, Kiss, and Kendrick Lamar
in that order ^
and the zoom tool

listening to the zoom tool? :P
what kind of band is that?

11:02 AM
I see, not easy. I don't do much writing with brush in Photoshop, it looks like a 3yo graffiti usually. Anyway I think my general writing look like it, I guess it's the same for everybody who use computer to write everything. Lol@Vincent
Is future this band ---> soundcloud.com/futurebandclub

Hm... 'Penny Tool and the Anchor Points' sounds like a gig I'd visit.

Very 80' sound, I do like. If it's not then I just discovered something new
That'd make a cool bar name

a bar would be 'Option Bar' :P

I wonder what kind of people we'd see there! Not like graphic designer have a stereotype imo

or maybe 'The Gradient Stop'

11:04 AM
hahah@Vincent
Menu bar and space bar were taken already, oh well

...suddenly I have an idea for a subject for the design challenge this afternoon
since all of America is doing Thanksgiving, it's up to me to pitch something :S

haha! Well, that seems like being some good topic to start with

@go-junta Future

Thanks Zach, I'll look at it

No problem

11:09 AM
So you like the "old" Eminem or the "new" one? That guy is a genius
hey Future is good, at least what I'm listening to so far. Thanks

@go-junta MMLP2 has some amazing lyrics on songs such as Rhyme or Reason, Rap God, and Brainless, to name a few. The older ones are much more actively violent, as opposed to the newer ones being more passively violent, or just verbally.
@go-junta I think Future has gotten a lot better in the past year or so. His new album, DS2 (Dirty Sprite 2), is pretty good, as well as his collaboration album with Drake.

Yeah he changed a lot but I like him anyway. Even if the old lyrics were more violent, he's a great writer. It's nice to see his evolution

Agreed. It just depends on what your mood is to which you want to listen to

haha indeed
You don't listen to these albums in loop
I'll have a look at what you linked me, thanks

No problem
@go-junta Sometimes you listen to songs on loop, though. :P it look me 201 listens to learn all the lyrics to Rap God (without reading the lyrics from Rap Genius or something similar, which would've made it too easy)

11:16 AM
haha true! Well I need to read the lyrics for sure... everytime

Haha, it becomes ingrained in your thoughts after awhile
Sometimes I'll be writing an essay or reading a book and the song will just pop in my head

I think these songs are fun! Even trying to sing them is funny, like those songs when we were kids

Definitely

Well maybe I look too much into it (as I think english speaker say), but I don't just enjoy the art of these kind of artists. In our modern time, and in every generation, we get those extraordinary creators who just go against the tide. And they're very human and own their stuff. So I admire Eminem too for this. He's not just a singer, he's some kind of Cynic philosopher too.
Hi @joojaa, welcome to MusicInkSpot Thursday Fun Party

@go-junta Ever heard anything by Tyler, The Creator?

11:28 AM
No' I'll have to look for this!

He's "offensive" on purpose. Don't read too much into the lyrics on the funny songs
Over the course of three albums, he tells the story of someone with schizophrenia who experiences multiple personalities

I like the Drake x Future you sent earlier. I just can't listen to that kind of "low key" (or whatever it's called) for too long haha! Makes me feel like I'm melting, like it's super slow. I'll need to check the other songs, only listened to one so far
oh interesting, I'll look at that

Cowboy, Colossus, and Rusty are all good, serious songs by Tyler
songs like Domo23 and Trashwang are the funny ones
(all on the same album, Wolf)

I really need to read the lyrics otherwise I'm missing the main part of the song. Thanks, on Colossus now. Buffallo video seems quite nice even if a bit controversial ;)

Hehe, Tyler is very controversial
His interviews are very cool, though. Also his Twitter
off topic (or rather on topic), how does this look?:
Here's the original :P

11:36 AM
I like the Bob Ross painting and colors! One thing, you need more contrast or to lighten a bit the background behind the text.. maybe by adding a low transparency (like 30% layer transparency) of white blur or light blue/gray behind the text

Overall pretty shiny! Maybe a little too midtoney though? The text and the illustration don't differentiate much and I'm not seeing any deep darks or bright lights.

Otherwise I like the color you chose, and layout

Ah, I see, the original is also dominated by low contrasts.

LOL I saw the Bob Ross link after, then I was... "wait a minute..."

I'd be inclined to fiddle with that to give the illustration more depth and the text more differential.

11:39 AM
Great concept, a good wink to master Bob <3

@ZachGates I'd flip the A

In particular, the "Brian" bit is really hard to read against the background.
(At first I thought it said "BRIM.")

@BESW That's what it looks like from the thumbnail /: hmm

just move the "by Brian" slightly more centered, it won't mess your concept
It's the happy little tree that hides the "by"!

Putting fiddly text (script typeface) on fiddly backgrounds (detailed landscape) with similar contrasts (mostly darkish midtones) will inevitably reduce readability.... at this point in the project contrast adjustment is probably the easiest fix.
Earlier in the project, I'd've suggested designing the landscape so its brighter, less detailed elements coincide with there the text will be placed: for example, expanding and re-positioning the smooth white snowy mountainsides.

11:44 AM
Hi all

I like to use some subtle transparent blur behind texts (not the layer style text outer glow), and to hide that "flashy" effect, I use other colors than white. Like on this one I'd use some color from the mountain so it doesn't make the blur too obvious but add contrast by hiding a bit the darker parts of the mountain.

I really like the individual elements you've got there, though. They're just not quite complementing each other, instead getting in each others' way; it's a problem the inspiration material has too.

doiing some math answers

Poor Zach, he only ask for a small feedback!

11:45 AM
Hi @joojaa

o/

So what's that? Your next Satellite? Looks great!

Q: NURBS topology classification

ValerioIn what sense a NURBS surface can only have the topology of a plane, cylinder or torus ? For example I can do a NURBS sphere. Is the sphere homeomorphic to one of the above surfaces ?

Ah yes of course, NURBS! (No idea what this is haha)

better/worse?

11:47 AM
Non-uniform Rational B-Spline

Joojaa, it's good, you expand my vocabulary every time I read your stuff
@ZachGates Yes I think it looks good!

It is a bit like a Bezier, except it can have any number of points. And can actually do circles.

Definitely better. The "with" does get lost in the trees a bit still.
And... [squint] are your only true blacks in the text shadow?

yeah i would move "with brian" to right so it occupies the white mountain area

Look people, it's a happy little tree, not just any tree
But I agree with Joojaa! It won't mess up your Bob concept
Booooooooooob <3

11:51 AM

I do agree with joojaa that moving the second line over a bit would improve legibility lots without suffering
yea!

@BESW I agree. I think this looks better.

better

inverted A is way more legible as well!

I ran into a similar foliage/text conflict with my Rashomon poster a few months ago, but I was able to modify the way the light fell through the leaves so that the leaves would be much lighter behind the text.

11:52 AM
Great!

Loverly.

What where?

hey @BESW Don't know if I sent you this already but it might interest you. Kind of cool if you want to build prototypes of board games printplaygames.com/prototypes

@BESW Hehe, maybe.. Should I change that?

@joojaa I think Bob is dead :( But he'll live in our memory forever

11:55 AM
@ZachGates I'm not sure. No true blacks does help with the "faded 80s" feel of the illustration; without that aesthetic goal I'd be a lot more sure it needed blacks.

@go-junta Blaspheme, Bob lives on

I wonder if Bob ever flip a table with all his paint or ever got mad

@BESW I'll find a way to lighten them

haha Zach
We don't know, maybe Bob was super sweet and but throwing his "unfoammy" cappuccino in his assistant's face when off camera!

11:57 AM
@go-junta I'm reminded of the bit in How to Cook Your Life where Brown breaks down.

finger crossed, this is the last one
I think it looks pretty vintage now

...I'm flipping between that one and the previous and not seeing any difference.
Uploaded the wrong one, maybe?

@BESW Seems like I'll have to be content with Ramsay flipping, I can't find a youtube of that Brown :/

@BESW "the joy of physics" is 7% lighter (:
@go-junta "I got a letter from somebody here a while back, and they said, 'Bob, everything in your world seems to be happy.' That's for sure. That's why I paint. It's because I can create the kind of world that I want, and I can make this world as happy as I want it. Shoot, if you want bad stuff, watch the news." - Bob

ay-men

12:01 PM
That's very nice, and I do think he was truly a good guy ;) Just funny to imagine those ultra zen people flipping tables sometimes. I'm sure they're adorable even when they do so

@go-junta Cool! I'll pass that on to my boardgame friends.

Ok, now it really is lighter
Is it too light now?

not to me

no, it's great

OK, awesome
Thanks for all of your advice!

12:10 PM
push to production

(off topic) I don't know if I should post the link but there's that hilarious scene in the movie "Death to Smoochy", the Cookie Scene (nsfw)

@joojaa It's for a friend's physics project, haha. Not much of a production /:

It's the Bob Ross thing that made me think of that Robin Williams hilarious movie

@ZachGates whatever it goes into is production of the design

@ZachGates It looks good and people will find it funny if they know Bob

12:12 PM
Indeed

haha

That was the original, hehe

yours is a tad bit better

:P
Paint vs Photoshop: Episode I

I see why you had to re-do the script text now
That's real custom quality work you did there!

12:20 PM
You don't get much better than homemade :P

Indeed!

1:06 PM
Goodnight, everyone!
or rather, morning

3 hours later…
4:00 PM
Is there anyone around for the weekly design challenge?
@marcusdoesstuff @FirstDraft @DA. @go-junta @joojaa @rafael @ZachSaucier @Vicki @Yisela @bharat @Wrzlprmft
I... guess that's a no --_--

haha

yeah, laugh :P

We could always do an improvised contest when more people get here

I've got um... Well I can download some drawing app on my phone lol

:)

4:25 PM
I'm working. But if it's not too much of a hassle I might just chime in...

@Vincent I completely forgot about it this week. Thanksgiving :P

Maybe I'll participate too but meh.. not sure either.
Hi @Noctrine, want to try our little weekly design contest?

Is it now? What's being designed?

we don't know yet

Someone chooses a random topic and we have 20minutes to create something. There's no prize and it's for fun! And I don't know if it's right now but soon if we get enough people!

4:32 PM
Sounds interesting - I'm tentatively in.

Yay!

I'm out for now - need to spend some time with my dad before he goes to work today
have a good day people

Maybe we should do the contest another time :/ Not many people because of the holiday I think. @Noctrice There's a way to "subscribe" to get ping when it happens, but I don't know how to add you to that list. @Vincent Maybe you can help for this or guide Noctrine?

4:50 PM
Too bad the contest is usually at a bad time for me. In Belgium, where I live, it's around 6PM, and that's when I get to go home from work

@PieBie Yes it's hard for me to participate too sometimes. Nothing stops us from doing some improvied contests for fun too sometimes and more in the european timezone!

how very true :)
but not right now ;)

Yeah, same for me. I'm about to take a little break, I don't feel much like Photoshoping.
HI @Ryan!

5:06 PM
I get room event pings

Great!
I'll be back later! A bit quiet now but have fun, all! :>

DA.
5:56 PM
@Vincent ah, slept in. Oh well. Next week! Happy turkey day!

@Vincent sory was swimming with the kids

6:57 PM
@Vincent Sorry, I had an insane day at work (no surprise there). If you post a challenge I will try to participate!

5 hours later…
