I like this question (though, probably not for this sites format). How do you guys like your spaces lit? Looking around my office, personal preference and "vibe" weigh heavy on who has lights overhead turned on and who doesn't. graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/61544/…
I definitely feel more creative when it's dark around me.

10 hours later…
12:05 PM
oh ya, weekly design challenge today
I feel like our participation will be down because hardly anyone has chatted this week :P

1 hour later…
1:21 PM
@Zach chat? what's that?

1 hour later…
2:39 PM
I won't be here for the challenge today, I've got family in town and brunch in a few minutes. But I'll do a late submission

@JohnB enjoy brunch

@JohnB have fun!
should we start pinging the usual suspects, tho?

good idea, chat pings are delayed to show up on the hot bar

like @ZachSaucier, @Rafael @FirstDraft, @DA. @Vicki @marcusdoesstuff

@joojaa

2:43 PM
@go-meek

go-meek is unpingable, so is yisela at this point :'(

@chanduc
I tried to poke Y through G+

I mean at that rate you could just superping her lol
feel like superping should be hyphenated super-ping

it should

you English speakers and your hyphens

2:46 PM
@Wrzlprmft @BESW either of you want to play along today?

hello!

@Yisela :))

we Dutch don't care about hyphens and just chain words together
hey @Yisela :D

thatjustdoesntmakealotofsense @Vincent

2:46 PM
@Ryan not that way
but we can build really, really long nouns by just stringing them together.

@FaheemMitha would you like to do this week's 20-minute design exercise with us?
@Vincent 20-minute hyphenated just for you :P

lol

I am at work but I'll try to make it happen :)

Ah, apparently the longest Dutch word is 50 letters :)

flauccinaucinihilipilification is the longest non-scientific word in the Oxford. It means "worthless"
I once used it in the final sentence of an essay for college writing course (that I took in High School) as a slap in the face to the professor.

2:52 PM
Can we start right on time today?

@ZachSaucier as in, in eight minutes?

will try

I'm a little pressed for time :)

We start when people show up. Maybe we could change the notification to be a few minutes early next week like 10:55

2:56 PM
Who's choosing today?

raises hand

:still hopes it's the comic sans ones:

lol

I'd win if we were competing on that one :D
if I can get it done in the time provided

@Darth_Vader where you at fool, its game time

2:59 PM
@Ryan I don't know what that is.

Vincent is going to give a topic, we'll set a 20 minute timer, and everyone makes something in that time limit (roughly speaking since we're not strict if you go over or submit late or anything)

do we post here first?

it's 1700 here, are we ready? Or whould we wait a bit for others to show up

@Ryan Ok. I don't have any idea what I would make, so probably not. But thanks for the invite.

3:00 PM
@Vincent gogo

We pinged everyone already, think its safe to start Vincent
seems a quiet week

any width / height?

3 hours ago, by Zach Saucier
I feel like our participation will be down because hardly anyone has chatted this week :P
@Yisela it may be specified

depends on what @Vincent says @Yisela

Instructions are simple, but it may be challenging. Make a single-colour icon for the UX element 'sort list items'. Icon must be roughly square-ish

3:02 PM
hmmm

export to any size that imgur'll accept :)
3..2..1..go! :)

@Vincent what type of sort?
any?

@ZachSaucier generic. could be alphabetic, could be by age
nonspecific, yes

what a worthless button :P

sort items by list, or sort items that are already in a list?...
I'm not sure I get what the button does :)
just sort?

3:04 PM
its fun being the prompt isn't it @Vincent haha

@Yisela sort items already in a list
@Ryan yup :)

(I haven't started the clock yet, waiting for the followup questions to finish)

I was prepared

but but but

(ah, I started mine. If you want to do the timing, that's fine)
lol
what;s up? :)

3:05 PM
So generic sort-list icon in a roughly square shape - any other questions?

a button for "sort" could be an arrow. Do you mean I have to decide what sort of list it is, and what I will be sorting with that particular button?
you said nonspecific

My understanding that it is to work for ALL sorts

@Yisela ive started drawing my arrow lol
dont copy me!

@ZachSaucier yes. imagine that the button leads to a UX element where you can specify the kind of sort

3:07 PM
I'd just do the above :P

okay whatever timer is starting

@Yisela eh... I should've specified 'textless icon' :/
or rahter, 'language-independent' :P

I think I'll pass on this one

I... I would like something more revolutionary, but for the sake of UX it has to be pretty self-explanatory

^^ UX says "Sort"

3:12 PM
I withdraw mine too, sorry :)

:( I like the topic @Vincent for what its worth.

I like the concept - coming up with an icon for something. Just not the bounds given
if we were to pick a specific sort and make an icon for it that'd work as well

ok
@ZachSaucier then try that :)

@ZachSaucier I've sketched at least 7 different ways to represent Sort so far. I don't see the issue at all
are they all great? maybe not. are they going to be universally understood? the hell if I care. This isn't an exercise in usability its a design exercise

The two concepts are completely intertwined in my book

3:15 PM
Make a single-colour icon for the UX element 'sort list items'.
An icon is just a grpahic, it has to be simplified to the maximum. Using an unconventional icon just makes it less clear

I am not asking for an unconventional icon

I really don't want to criticise the idea, at all! But maybe "sort" is too classic an element, maybe the icon could be for something abstract
I feel like a grinch

heh, I thought the assignment hard enough already :)

okay then imagine if you will - why are you assuming the list is vertical? what if its a horizontal list?

And hey, it's my first time being the prompt, so... sorry `^_^

3:18 PM
it's completely fine :P

alright, I will give it another try

@Yisela I liked your first one...

Comic sans for life

hahaha

@FirstDraft cool :D

3:23 PM
it's a..... sorting box!

lol

(that looks a bit like a toaster)

lol lot like a toaster

that's nice

3:25 PM

less toaster more drawer

@Ryan ah nice idea

@ZachSaucier :0 nice tool!!

ya, it's lovely

3:26 PM
@ZachSaucier a lot of those might work just for a generic 'sort'

@Vincent I disagree :P

why?

@Vincent this is my favourite cause it has action in it (in a single state)

bc icons need to be more exact

(@Ryan my timer expired. yours?)

3:27 PM
that was my sketch, well sideways
I liked the dot concept the best. "Sort" then it switches to "Shuffle"

yeah, @vincent's has the most action, but is a bit too busy for a small icon

@FirstDraft agreed

yep, depends where it's used

I like Yisela's toaster the best

toaster is not valid because it said list sort
not "sort a bunch of random crap" :)

3:29 PM
it's a nice icon--I'm amazed you can whip that up in just a few minutes

I really like the idea of "order", "shuffle"
it wouldnt work for something where you click and choose different sorting options, but for a binary command it's great
I didnt get it at first cause I was thinking list

@Yisela one friend in the HTML/CSS room does art on it sketchtoy.com/64992341 (this is of another room member)

haha

even if you sort different options it could work. "order" would open the different order choices (which Vincent even mentioned somewhat) then Shuffle would just go back to random

3:30 PM
or you could have the Order icon be a random Order. All sorts of ideas

@ZachSaucier cool :)

thanks for the topic @Vincent and for playing everyone

Thank you all for your contributions :)

yeah! sorry about the initial reaction
I just... do icons a lot for work
but I'm very surprised by the results, sorting is not as straightforward as I thought

gotta go o/
ty for challenge @Vincent

3:33 PM
see ya, Zach!
and no prob. I had trouble coming up with something nice anyway :)

@GaryMeyer greetings and computations

Hello. how is everyone today?

more sober than I should be

Hi!
Aaand goodbye, because I'm heading home :) Thanks Vincent!

bye @Yisela have a good night

3:39 PM
bye!

hello @GaryMeyer

a buddy of mine just figured out a way to play Flash videos on iOS

hullo

hi joojaa

hi
why would you emulate cSS in illustrator?

3:50 PM
@Ryan wut?

why not make it in browser?
weekly challenge

@Wrzlprmft we do a weekly design challenge. Thought you might like to join us

I might. You have a topic, right?

> Make a single-colour icon for the UX element 'sort list items'. Icon must be roughly square-ish

We do this every Thursday at uh... 11am EST or 3pm GMT

3:55 PM
Ok, I'm off to a mini-holiday. Seen you guys Monday!

bye vincent

css in illustrator take one :)

@Wrzlprmft single color! yes easily done but still. Very good icon by the way mind if i steal that from you :)
you shoudl swap the top 2 bars

@joojaa I tried, it looked ugly.

4:08 PM
yeah what about logarithimic scale?

Logarithmic scale of what?
Bar lengths?

bar sizes
yes

yeah it looks like fu you now :)
first was better

Is it the proportion of bar lengths or swapping the top two bars or both?
@joojaa No, I don’t mind

4:22 PM
swapping, and propotion

4:58 PM
ah, mine's very similar to yours @Wrzlprmft
I swear I didn't peek :)

I wouldn’t call that very similar.
@JohnB Why two arrows?

conceptually
because it's twice as better as one arrow
I originally wanted to have the arrows show the swaps but I ran out of time and it didn't look very nice
kinda like @Vincent's
nice work everyone

Nice work @Wrzlprmft and @JohnB

I think I like @Wrzlprmft's third the best. @Yisela's red one looks like a toaster :D (sorry!)

5:54 PM
@Wrzlprmft Good use of diagonal to save on space
@Ryan go back to your vaca ;)

@ZachSaucier huh?

Misread Vincent as you
doh
that's what I get for skimming while scrolling

DA.
ah bummer. I missed this one. I like doing icons.
Nice work everyone.

@DA. Gogo

1 hour later…
7:11 PM
@ZachSaucier any idea what would make a website not print correctly unless scaled down drastically? I haven't setup any special CSS for printing though I will at some point. Right now though the site I've been working on pretty much prints the main menu (top) and the submenu (right side) then nothing else unless drastically scaled down.

oh wow, finally Skeptics got a facelift meta.skeptics.stackexchange.com/q/3396
I think that site had the most atrocious design of any SE site

Never visit it but I know one of the mods over there :\

know them from outside SE?

@JohnB Hmm, I miss the characteristic yellow.

I hated the yellow and black

7:22 PM
It’s also lacking individuality; feels like a beta site

@JohnB yep
i should take tomorrow off. so drained
and can't believe 3 upvotes have been given to that Animated Gif export question or my answer :\

uh well one was mine because you taught me something :)
I didn't know using Media Encoder is the "right" way now
but Save for Web sure is convenient

I dont know if its the right way either. I never make animated gifs in photoshop anymore hahaha
but it sure made me sound smart and thats whats important
hahahaha

:D
I wondered why SFW was considered legacy but never cared enough to find out why

They were making a poor attempt at improving it through Quick Export and Export Assets
Except everyone is trained to use Save For Web so nobody knew or looked at Export Assets. Since nobody used it, they got rid of it in CC2015 essentially leaving an odd gap where SFW is Legacy but there's not really a great replacement for it either

3 hours later…
10:50 PM
@Ryan I'd have to see the CSS to have a guess. I haven't heard of that before

11:13 PM
Hey @ArtOfCode
