Q: Supernova styles missing?

Zach SaucierI was viewing this page and noticed that one question with 187k views didn't look like it had that many views based on the coloring - it had the same color as questions with low views. Upon inspection it had the following styles: .supernova { color: #777; font-weight: 400; } These are ...

@WebandFlow If it's a mod, just ping them here and I believe they can make a temporary private room

Hi @joojaa

hi
@DumbNic hows it goin

Nice relaxed Sunday here, you?

starting to be able to move

Why couldn't you move?
Have you engineered an exoskeleton and are in recovery? :P

engineered exoskeleton is in recovery :P

4:24 PM
I knew it
If anyone could it was you ;)
what are you working on lately @joojaa?

5:14 PM
@DumbNic ah sorry needed to tend the kids
Ive been trying to find good uses for postscript. Or in fact i mourn the death of the last good 2d graphics api

5:27 PM
@joojaa Sounds like someone who doesn't want to transition to mp3 because they spent so much on their CD collection :P
How many children do you have?

2 one boy and a girl
@DumbNic well perhaps it is but for a person who has discovered postscript AFTER it was deprecated leads me wondering

@joojaa nice, how old?

1 EPS is clearly better than SVG
boy soon 3 gril 5

@joojaa I delivered some graphics to a printing company as EPS though, upon request

2 EPS is better than PDF for a person developping graphics
the only thing thats going against eps is

5:30 PM
one color? - or is that a different format?

1 no support for transparency, which would be ridiculously easy is implement
2 adobe sees EPS as their biggest competitor

doesn't it only support one color though?

of the 3 contenders eps, pdf and pdf eps is clearly better in terms of engineering
no
it supports color just like anything else
so my latest eps is looking like this:

it's Martian to me lol

copy it in a file (with eps ending), and drop it in illustrator
but yes probably a boring example you probably would like this one better:

am opening AI atm
looked at them, did you hand code them or draw?

hand code
the ean thing is useful because you can change the code and it changes

nice, you mean change the numbers?

so if you change (9 772049 343272) draw-EAN-13 to say (9 111000 222333) draw-EAN-13

are you sure it's not limited to only one colour in the pallette?

yes im sure let me whip an exaple

5:43 PM
am trying atm as well
is there something older than EPS that I'm getting confused with?

i cant think of anything really
unless your talking of something older than 1980's

appears to work for me
It may have just been the configuration he asked for, my memory is hazy

the real point is in my examples
its easy to do things in postscript
I can do a logo that's BOTH rgb and black and white, and has different style for tiny versions etc... in one file

that syntax is fairly unreadable though for anyone unfamiliar with console stuff I think
That's what'd take me longest to wrap my head around
for me it's easier to just do it manually lol
but I am appreciating more value in it from the uses you are describing

yes but your not supposed to write it. BUT heres the point somebody has to
Both svg and pdf fail here

5:54 PM
actually, that last example is much easier to read, I could probably do a little bit of that

i can write postscript with a text editor. I can sortof write SVG with a text editor (ist just incredibly verbose), and i can maybe sort of write pdf with a text editor
yes because its not a program

also pointless to write it when it's more fun and just as quick to make those shapes

Ill give you a hint. If you place your eps in illustrator then edit the file illustrator will update on your edit

I do get your points though, and the programming side is difficult
@joojaa what do you mean by that, the code will change?

so if you save the text again with new values illustratr will update the image, So say you put the isbn in and changed the isbn code then illustrator will update
sort of like a custom macro shape

5:59 PM
aha! and it would probably be a lot easier to programmatically generate 1000s from a CSV list - or even simple txt file
is it your original work? can I hang on to it, or is it copyright?
I'm going to be a typical British person and go have a cup of tea :) will be back in up to half an hour though

you can use it

thanks a lot :) I'm not sure if I'll ever have a use for it but I'd like to
maybe one day for a mockup, could customise it quite cool eg, 8008135 :P, back soon

7:00 PM
Technology SUCKS!!!!!! :)
In the middle of sorting out 2 raid failures (apparently due to heat and a bad fan).. I decide to clean my keyboard.... well I must have gotten overzealous with cleaning because I plug it back in and it's DEAD! I pull out my spare keyboard and the while left side doesn't work... I forgot to reorder a new one the last time I replaced the keyboard (I always keep a new one for backup). So this morning, in my small town, I've had to run around trying to find someone selling Apple keyboards....
On a Sunday no less. Just joyous weekend :)

At least if it was a PC you could've gone anywhere @Scott :P

I found a couple at Staples. If not for them, I'd have been driving 50 miles this morning....
And I could have gotten by withouth an s w d or x key until tomorrow if I had to

I feel a bit hopeless when my tech goes down :'(

Just that once a decade tech-tsunami that happens :)

Especially as it's a laptop, one part can stop me using the whole thing
Keyboard or screen
Can workaround both though

7:10 PM
Oh I always know I can get back up and runnign wthout losing any work data... but it may takes days to reset things. Thankfully this one isn't that bad. It'll take a couple days to rebuild the RAIDs, but I can get by until they are done.
But, yeah the keyboard going was critical :)
Note to self: Take it easy on those moist wipes with the keyboard

Supposed to use pressurised air I recall
And maybe a cotton bud

And My RAID is supposed to send emails on errors.. well it was erroring and no emails were sent.. so I need to look into that once it's rebuilt.
Air doesn't clean finger gunk :)

Was shopping for keyboard and mouse recently
Some of the ergonomic ones are crazy

they really don't make ergonomic keyboards for the Mac. There are a couple, but I hear they are hit or miss as far as working well.

Email on error is something I wasn't aware of, pretty awesome when it works

7:13 PM
yeah.. I SHOULD have sent email tellign me the fan was out.. adn it was too hot... but it didn't.
and all this I think because I closed a nearby window on Friday.
So... it got warmer in that area
Office is ALWAYS warmer so that window is normally open a crack.

What made you check the problem?

well when I finally got to a point where the RAID manager app would see it... it showed all the errors.

Ahh okay, that's literally the only server environment error I could think of
Maybe the usual culprit or just a lucky guess

Well a bad disk in the RAID would error and a corruption of data can cause the RAID to break.

Yeah that's basically the error it's built to handle, I think I was taking into account that more than one failed simultaneously
such a rare error / coincidence

7:19 PM
Well one of the RAID isnt' failing.. the MAC OS is just having an issue writing to it... which is odd.
So that RAID just needs to be reformatted (and all data reinstalled to it)
That's some nebulous Mac error... not sure why. Could have been a power interruption

how old is that disk? you said some were quite old before
could just be on its way out

yeah the bad RAID is a decade old.. the one with the odd reformat error is maybe 3-4 years old
But it was all moved 8 months ago.. so... who knows

I think even 4 years is a decent lifecycle for a disk that's used regularly
unless it comes with some kind of extended guarantee
and a decade, lol, no surprises on that front

yeah. I'm geenrally not overly worried abotu a disk failing after a couple years. It happens. I just hate it when they start dropping off at the same time. Rebuilding multi-TB RAIDs is not fun :)

Maybe better to do an early upgrade if you've got a lot of work to do already?
using disks from same manufacturer and model should work better than mixed as well

7:27 PM
Nope. Mixed same spec' disks works better. If you buy all teh same manufacturer you'll run the risk of there being a "bad lot" and drives will start dropping off all at the same time
I get all 7200RPM 64MB cache drives of the same size. And NEVER western Digital drives... but Seagate, Toshiba, Hitachi, etc.

that's a good point, I suppose the architecture is so standardised nowadays that there's no noticeable difference either, it's just what I was always taught, same manufacturer stuff often works better together

In theory that true.. but in practice.. it's not due to fluctuations in manufacturer quality

I only do it if there's no better option
I got this alien like mouse the other day: johnlewis.com/logitech-mx-performance-mouse/…
it's quite comfortable, and has a little bit of 3D potential if I ever get around to it
there were better ones, but at twice the price (£80) :/

Interesting... :) I haven't used a mouse in years.

I bought a really small bamboo tablet before
it was way too small to be useful
the ones I want are out of my budget
like £1000+

7:37 PM
yeah the larger ones cost :) I can't use a "small". Currently using a "large" and can get by with a "medium" at times, but the "small" is just too "small" :)

Hi @ZachSaucier I don't think we've met formally

@Scott oops, the actual drawing space was less than half the tab size

yeah they are small :)
it's like trying to draw on a trackpd :)

also want to show you one crazy keyboard that I kinda want
2 mins
kinda like this: google.co.uk/shopping/product/… but I can't find the exact one
the more I think about it, the more that curve and angle makes sense
if anyone has tried one I'd like to hear if it's comfortable or not

7:43 PM
Interesting. They take some adjustment I hear. Never tried ergonimics

the biggest problem I foresee, because I have it already, is that on a normal keyboard elsewhere you're actually slower once used to your own
I'm atleast 5x faster on my current one, and it's not even that different

yeah and they kind of assume you are using the keyboard 80% of the time as opposed to a mouse. I can see ergonomic keybards for writers, but I just can't see one when most of my use is shortcut keys in apps ;)

Yeah I don't do all that much typing beyond slowly writing copy and browsing
and the price of these items is so much higher than I remember a few years ago
@joojaa posted a useful barcode EPS earlier btw
when you change the ISBN numbers in the code, the barcode changes appropriately, from what I understand

meta doesn't get a lot of activity on GD, does it? Haha

@ZachSaucier sometimes it seems like nobody has been there in weeks lol :)

8:13 PM
Who runs that "You think your logo is hard core" tumbler... I've cought one!
:D

8:28 PM
@GiantCowFilms what's that?

8:47 PM
@DumbNic Its someone ripping of logos like the image... you'll have to see it

@GiantCowFilms Is that IMDBs old logo or just an odd version someone whipped up?

@DumbNic Look at there sight... its to do with advertising

@GiantCowFilms Yeah I just use them for the community ratings
if it's a low 6 it's questionable, anything lower is a waste of time
