@Jack Hi
I can't even remember if I filled any forms for that one.

1 hour later…
10:43 AM
@Joonas mulle ainakin tulki paita ja kamat jo
@Vincent i need a trained eye

Hi @Joojaa. Trained at what? ;)

@Vincent Eye

tell me

Am i hallusinating but why do the letter seem noncentered

'outlined' is centered way better than 'center'

10:47 AM
@Vincent Yes

C and D are off indeed
and all of the 'center' letters seem just a px too high

@Vincent but why is A better in center? How can moving them up and ndown make them feel differently positioned sideways?
Thing is i have about a 7000 of these and with differet fonts so manual placement is out. But why is this so different form normal kerning
@Vincent so do i need to lets call it kern both up and down as well as sidewways. Or am I indeed hallucinating

I guess it's got something to do with the optical center of the glyph
since an A is so thin on top, its optical center is lower

how would you go ahead and find the optical center

by eye
by gut

10:51 AM
@Joonas Hii

Yeah thats why a was like it is in center and thats why B and C are nort

most probably, yes

But I filled the form and received the goodies
it was good @Joonas

@Jack i got mine yesterday Give it some time. Joonas probablygets them today
@Vincent would it be possible to have some heurestics for optical center you think

@joojaa I... doubt it
but then again, Adobe made 'optical' kerning a thing and I mostly agree with that

10:54 AM
@Jack Joonas lives further off logistically

hi @Jack
did we meet? shakes hands uncertainly

@Vincent yeah i know but erning letters is easier than kerning a ballon for some reason becasue it has more degrees fo freedom.
Maybe this would become my first question ever... Tough not sure is GD is a good place to be.

give it a try I'd say
you might be surprised :_
:)

YEah i need to refine this furter tough, yyou know what have you tried and all.

Hi @Vincent I dont remember certainly!

11:04 AM
then
shakes hands a bit more confidently
nice to meet you :)

same here :) @Vincent
@joojaa arent they cool?
I use to visit this chat room often but suddenly got too busy and no more visits :(

@Jack well it would have been cool either way. I wearing the t-shirt as we speak

I know the feeling. Summer was ok, but now its work work work

yeah lectures begin next week

I see!
@Vincent yeah and by this you loose the conversation all the time

11:12 AM
@Jack your work's over, so you're here again? :)

@Vincent not like that just came to see, work is never done!

good.

Work is done when you are done. Life is a project all between is part of that one project, no matter what others tell you.

lol
life is a ball

@joojaa @Jack I did receive a package notice last friday but I've been toi lazy to go get it. It could be the gd.se package.

11:24 AM
@Joonas you should check! its running all around!

@Joonas ne toi sen mulle kotiin eilen mutta se ei mahtunut luukusta mutta satuin olee kotona ku nuorin oli kipee. Joten kotiin asti tuotiin.

@Jack do you speak any weird languages? The two Suo-men have been going at it here the last few days ;)

11:47 AM
Mornin folks

@joojaa Joo ei mahtunu munkaa postilaatikosta. Postisetä tulee aina vastaa aamulla kun oon kävelemässä röihin:)

Oh sorry im not encrypting my communication on purpose

@joojaa I'm kidding :)
hey Spartan
how're you?

@Vincent i know trying to be social
with my antisocial tendensy not so easy ;P

@vincent gomennasai, baka...baka...

11:55 AM
@Joonas lol
ii des yo.

12:18 PM
@Vincent Doing well, thanks. Sad to be back to work on this here Tuesday... how are you?

good, thanks. lots of work, but most of it is fun and pays well

That's good :)
My job isn't bad... I'd just ideally be self employed one day :)
My job is really quite ideal while I pay off my student loans and whatnot
I like what I do and I like the people
Though I wouldn't call it fun :P
The problems I encounter at work (business system development) are not nearly as fun as the ones I solve in my spare time (game development)

being self-employed is both harsh and great
I never regretted quitting working for a boss

I've heard good and bad things about freelancing in the development world around here. I'd like to think I'd attempt it one day but I need significantly more savings and a plan
Less debt perhaps :P
The school I attended is the best and worst thing that happened to me in my career lol
(ITT Tech)
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo expensive
But since I was attending night classes, one year in I got an internship as a SharePoint admin / developer that I got to do 30-40 hours a week which accelerated my career very very quickly
It's a blessing and a curse

SharePoint
shivers
have been doing some work with it, some sixish years ago
but yes, not having any significant debt and little rent and all really helps when you start being a freelancer

12:38 PM
morning

hey @Ryan

I already regret offering to help my dad
I ask him for specs he sends me some other ad he had done instead as well as a pantone color for his logo. I ask him about the pantone, he says ignore it cause they can't afford it. ... Then why'd you send me it!?
Oh and that other ad. Its in Comic Sans MS.
I'm not sure if its better or worse than the crumpled paper

@Vincent SharePoint has a bad reputation because everyone does it wrong. It's kind of depressing.
The 2010 and 2013 versions of SharePoint are greatly improved over it's predecessors too

@Ryan my eyes! they're burning! :(

But still suffer from being so flexible you can screw up implementation without proper planning
Most companies just turn it into a file share via a browser which makes it less usable than a normal file share... which is bad

12:51 PM
I kind of understood that it's a very powerful program and that we only used a tiny part of its capacity
but then again, bankers...

Yeah... I don't think MS helps by selling it as "free" when really you need to put a lot of man power towards a proper implementation
And companies say "I may not know anything about it but how hard can it be? Let's just do it!"

@Vincent Is it really worse than that crumpled paper though? I'm not sure.
Anyhow, what board game you get?

@Ryan it's hard to say, but I prefer the crumpled paper
we ended up getting Race for the Galaxy and Hanabi
pretty content overall. Race promises to be a deep game, that's also fun with just the two of us

Race sounds better to me than Hanabi
Hanabi sounds kinda like a drinking game since you have to try and explain what number and color someone is holding

It's more of a puzzler, actually
it's a small game
how was your (long) weekend?

1:01 PM
eh not too eventful. Workout took a lot out of me on Saturday so then I slept the entire day basically. Sunday went out with friends all day. Yesterday I didn't do much of anything. Played a lot of Hearthstone

So let me get this straight... we would recommend Race for the Galaxy for only two players?
My wife and I are always trying to find games that are good for just the two of us

It is at least fun with two players

Cool. I'll have to check it out

and that's saying something about a 2+ player game. Most of those are either focused on two players and can only nominally be played with more, or they are made for 3+ players and the interaction and mechanics for two are... lacking

Exactly

1:03 PM
I found Small World to be enjoyable with two as well

Small World is one of our favorites

with two, it's a quick game you easily play two of in a single sitting. With more it's a bigger, longer game

It's still not that bad with more though since it's driven by turns as opposed to "last man standing" or anything of the sort
I personally love it because you can feel like you are losing and somehow manage to pull of the win

I didn't say it was bad, only different. I like it both with two and more

You never know who is winning the whole time (assuming you keep the gold numbers a secret)
I used the phrase "not that bad" to mean "it's not terribly long compared to others"
Might be an American phrase...

1:12 PM
hehe... ok, correction, I love Small World, independent from the number of players
(unless that number is one, of course)

hahaha
If you are looking for a 2 player, and only 2 player game - I would recommend Mr. Jack. It's kind of chess like in the way it's played but the two players play very different roles in the game.

already in the collection :) Mr. Jack in New York, that is
my bf usually wins, tho :/

The bastard
Forbidden Island / Forbidden Desert are fun coop games for 2 or more
I think it might actually be more difficult with more players

heard of those
yeah, co-ops usually become harder with more players
Pandemic, I'm looking at yo

Okay im off to play MtG
Cee yall

1:17 PM
@joojaa jealous! :)
see ya!

@Vincent another good one :D

sigh any css wizards in here?
@Ryan won any?

@Vincent what's your issue?
..css issue, preferrably...

@Joonas lol
thanks, but I solved it
a </div> in the wrong place can wreak great havoc

With html spread across multiple documents, it's not necessarily easy to find...
Wordpress, i'm looking at you.

1:32 PM
I've worked with Wordpress plugins once... I was so angry with the people who wrote them

That's why I annotate my html / php like nothing else
I try to keep up the habit of adding a comment to each /div that mentions what div it's closing

I usually go with <!-- #wrap -->

yeah, I use php so its /* ends foo */ for me

1:56 PM
hi! anyone around?

do you know what this font is? I know it comes with windows but can't find it:

@Yisela Joke or serious?
@Vincent won any what?

serious

@Yisela Bank Gothic

2:02 PM
I thought it was copperplate or engraved...

and hi @yisela
@Ryan Hearthstone

@Vincent thanks!!

anytime :)

I bought the 40 pack. Won a few constructed games and went 1-3 in the draft. Need a lot of work still on drafting
Have a fair amount of Dust now too but not sure what to craft with it

@Ryan drafting is fun, at lewast in MtG
it's my favorite way of playing the game

2:11 PM
I'm terrible at it. In Hearthstone you get 3 random heroes to pick from. Then 3 cards to pick from for 30 cycles (decks in Hearthstone are 30 not 60). You then go until 12 wins or 3 losses.
My personal best so far is 3 wins.

sounds tough

2:26 PM
Hey @Vincent @SpartanDonut @Yisela and anyone else around -- questions on curriculum for teaching design. Do you feel these are on topic?

I think they are. We don't have for naught

I might have a question then sometime probably tomorrow. Working on a proposal and need to include course goals and/or a basic outline.
not sure if the question is too much opinion though

You can always pasebin the question and run it by chat if you aren't really sure once you've got the question composed

itll be way too long for that

sup

2:37 PM
morning Gramps

forgot about that name

hey Matt. How're you?

going nuts trying to figure out a good way to center an SVG with text and allow it to be resizable.
how are you?
saw there was no one in here yesterday

ah, that sounds nasty indeed
going nuts 'coz I forgot to prepare for the appointment I have tomorrow morning and it's almost to to go home

we can help you stay awake, lol

2:52 PM
it's not that late yet
I can always take my laptop home

you take your laptop home you'll start to be like me

I'll wear a black integral helmet with a mustache glued on?

I'm going to try and get taxpayers to buy me a new computer and adobe subscription so I can work at home. lol

@Ryan =/

@Matt what's wrong?

2:55 PM
okay... I give up..
ideas for centering an svg with text and be resizable??

I'm working on a proposal to the Small Business Development Center here to see if I can do workshops and consult for them. If possible, especially for the consulting part, I'll see if I can get a small grant to cover my expenses. I know most of their consultants are paid staff members so I think at least enough to cover my costs should be doable.

@Ryan sounds like a plan

Not sure if they're going to be receptive to me or not. I wanted to talk with the woman directly but instead she emailed me back just, "Please send me your resume." I replied, "Do you want any sort of proposal or letter along with it as to what I want to help with? My resume will only tell you part of the story." And she hasn't replied again.
I'm just going to send her my resume with proposal anyways
Problem is I've got soo much I want to cover for them and I'm not entirely sure what their current "e-Marketing and Social Media" workshop covers. Thinking I'll focus more on print, copywriting, and how to hire and work with creatives.

Q: Does StackExchange’s establishment hate typography?

Incnis MrsiPossibly some of you read Wikipedia. We can’t say it is designed professionally, but (in such its parts as en.wikipedia.org, de.wikipedia.org and ru.wikipedia.org) community treats typography with respect. Such things as “dash”, “arrow symbols”, “degree sign” (°), and “serif vs sans-serif” font f...

3:12 PM
I can't decide if I understand the question... and if I do understand it I can't decide if I care.

I understand and don't care. I'm answering it to say basically that lol

That's more or less where I was but thought maybe I was too ignorant on the matter
There I go giving something seemingly silly the benefit of the doubt...

zomg
sorry, but someone needs a life

left my answer

um.. ok
I see a rant.. dont know how it pertains to design though?

3:20 PM
Something about Typography being design related... I dunno

I don't get how someone can bitch about typography while writing I repeatedly in their post.

@Ryan lol thats a great comment
closed.

wat

hey @JohnB

sup John

3:33 PM
hi
dammit, @Ryan!

hah in before your extra comment. ill delete mine

:)

you have a nice long weekend?

yup, I did nothing

my type of weekend!

3:42 PM
dunno if anyone here has DayZ, but I played a bit of that. And a couple games of Catan (which I assume at least @Vincent has played)

@JohnB More than I ever wanted. Had to put up with it just last Sunday :)

All the hostility of Monopoly bundled with the strategic screw-over-your-friends attitude of Risk

Catan is good fun
DayZ is fun with friends

never heard of DayZ

PC game

3:45 PM
It's a zombie survival game. I hadn't played it for a few months, not much has changed.

ah, that's why boardgamegeek comes up empty :)

Hopefully there were some bug fixes in those few months

zombie path finding seems to be less aggrivating
some sort of transportation would really be a game changer
A typical play through for me goes as following:

- play with friends, agree to meet up somewhere (30 minutes to do this)
- arrive at location, go somewhere with them (15 minutes)
- come across some random dude, one of us dies, friend says "welp I don't want to play anymore since I just lost all my gear"
haha

@JohnB holy crap. Only takes you guys 30 minutes to meet up? So pro...

@SpartanDonut well, assuming one of us is in Solnichniy and the other is in Berezino ;)
if they're on opposing sides of the map then the conversation just goes "Nah, I don't want to play with you because I logged out near NW Airfield"

3:54 PM
oooh a show we're attending is going to be held at Caesar's Palace. Wonder if I'm going to that one

that'd be fun

I'm more interested in the show we're going to in San Antonio, and boss just confirmed I'm definitely attending that one.
Vegas isn't my cup o' tea
though I won't turn down the opportunity to travel either

have you been to San Antonio before?

never been anywhere in Texas

the river walk area is very nice

3:57 PM
I think the convention center is right on the river walk

it's of course very touristy and expensive, but nice none the less
great place for Tex-Mex!

I don't think I can do tex-mex. I can't eat spicy foods

ahhh bummer

For shame

I want to see if there's a Spurs home game though that I might be able to find the time for. I'm not sure how long the show hours are at this one.

3:59 PM
quite

I know someone who says jalapeno potato chips are too spicy
Makes me weep inside

you won't ever be able to appreciate @JohnB's homegrown jalapeños

@SpartanDonut you haven't met me. I don't know anyone worse then me at spicy foods. I like the taste of them too, I just can't or shouldn't eat them.
Once in a while I'll have at home where I can have a sweat rag and gallon of milk with it haha

@Vincent way to spell it properly with the eñe, we can add that to the meta post as an example of how much we care about typography

beer helps, better than milk imho.
but I guess you don't drink

4:02 PM
I'm very picky about my spicy foods. For example Tabasco is gross. Buffalo Wild Wings mango habanero sauce... delicious but incredibly painful some days

@JohnB I almost felt personally assaulted by that question
was even planning to wait for a day to write an answer
but alas, now it's closed :)
then again, my answer would probably have amounted to 'learn your altcodes, dude'.

@JohnB well played
I think its particular spices I can't tolerate. Its been a while but I use to eat Jalapenos without a problem but other stuff like red pepper or cumin, even just regular old black pepper can make me sweat like you wouldn't believe

what about wasabi?

I know my mom now has Acid Reflux and can't eat certain spices and foods. Maybe I'm getting that too
Wasabi is so-so, I usually avoid it because I just don't like it that much taste-wise. The ginger though is delicious

I like black and red peppers, but I can't stand the Japanese Green Monster very well

4:07 PM
Im come back from a meeting and this place is hopping..

ever watch Furious Pete on YouTube?

that's a pretty funny challenge. I've eaten a ghost before, I would not do it again (unless on maybe a triple dog dare)

lol

I had some ghost pepper BBQ sauce recently... it was good but very hot indeed
It was one of those where the more you ate the worse it got though... so in moderation not too bad

yeah spicy BBQ sauces have a way of sneaking up on me. Starts of with "That's it? This isn't hot at all" and quickly descends to regret

4:15 PM
put it this way, I just started sweating because a coworker of mine is eating buffalo wings for her lunch... in the next office from mine

hah wow

I remember as a kid those Icy Hot / Mineral Ice things making me feel absolutely terrible like I was choking. Now I can actually tolerate those though.

@Ryan buffalo sauce has a strong vinegary scent about it that could do that if it wafted into the room. I feel ya

on this hot note, I'm going to call it a day

later!

4:19 PM
see you guys later!

Well now I'm hungry
Thank god its about lunch time

im eating lunch right now

I hate you
Waiting on a coworker...

Q: How to designer game artwork similar to Jellies and Two Dots

ItsMeAgainAs a game developer I want to learn just enough Photoshop for designing game artwork myself. I am specifically interested in the game artwork style used in Jellies and Two Dots (please see images below). How can I learn this art style as a beginner in a structured way? I appreciate any guidelines...

@Scott I'm about to post your picture as the answer
ah darn got called away, in a minute!
<---- arse

7:38 PM
I'm selling that version of Photoshop SuperXtended, @Ryan. Only a $2399.99 monthly subscription.
Limited number of copies available though. And Once they're gone there will be no more.

Do you prorate partial months? I figure with that version I should be able to finish my game art in about 5 minutes after which I can unsub.

Prorated partial months from the first. Once paid, they last the rest of the month. So, if you sign up on the 5th, you get a prorated amount. (-$399.99 for a total subscription fee of $2000.00). The subscription is then valid the rest of the month. If cancelled, it will end the first of the following month.
So... You'd have to sign up on the 29th, and cancel on the 30th or 31st.

I think I can manage that if I plan ahead. Good deal.

Remember, limited subscriptions available :)

I have a feeling I'll be the first to offer up money ;P
That's what... $80 for a day?

7:45 PM
yeah roughly $79

Cheapest game art money can buy lol
Except for free of course but free art sucks and doesn't have all the features your photoshop does

Well it doesn't necessarily create art. it gneerates ideas, mimics styles, etc. :)
There's no telling if the brainstorming and idea generating will be what you see as "good" :)

Meh. Worst case scenario I dispute the credit card charge with my bank. Crisis averted.

Cash only :)

This is obviously a scam

7:50 PM
or err... bitcoin maybe :)
Nahhhhhhh. why would it be a scam :) ???

Cash only... drive over the Water street bridge and toss the cash out your car window while driving. The cash must be in a locked metal briefcase. Anything else and we won't touch it and you won't get your product. If you throw a ringer we will find you and we will kill you.

Oooo I got my merch in the mail :-D

Congrats @Emilie

I had to share :-P

@SpartanDonut shhhhhh.. it's my hope those in need of the "magic button" won't realize.

7:53 PM
Well since I've found you out I obviously get a cut or your secret isn't safe.

What secret? :)
No clue what you are referring to.

Unfortunately I think google now knows. Guess you're SOL, friend.

Nah.. if you need the magic button you clearly don't read anything associated with the apps much :)
You do know it was all a joke, right? Limited subscriptions because... oh darn.. the last one was just sold.

I would hope me implying that I could make game art automagically in 5 minutes would signal I was playing along with the joke

ASCii isn't always great at conveying tone :) I thought so.. but... well.... You seem a bit sharper that that :)

8:06 PM
Do I get a free license for helping to promote your products?? @Scott

Sorry no subscriptions can be comp'ed. The corporate mandate strictly states "suck every penny from anyone."

Do you take Somalian dollars?

We took the lead from Adobe and while they perhaps aren't as clear in their language use, the sentiment is the same.
So... I'm at the bank drive through today....
Anyone else feel it is inconsiderate to go through the drive through if you have some complicated thrid party "need to discuss with teller" transaction to make? I only use the drive through when it's a simple single transaction.

Yes I do agree with that

I think it's just rude to make those behind you wait 10 minutes becuase you don't want to park and go inside

8:14 PM
I was pissed when I went to a new bank offering credit union shared branch only to be told I have to come in at their bank. The one I usually go to lets me drive through
I walked inside, like 6 people in line, I ask the woman at the back of the line how long she's been there and she said 15 minutes so I just turned around and walked back out.
But here Scott, while you wait this will cheer you up:

yeah I do that.

But at least I do park and go in when I know it's not a simple scan and give me a reciept transaction

I only go to the bank to deposit my roommates share of our rent. Otherwise I never go to the bank.

@Ryan ain't "the cloud" wonnerful!?

8:19 PM
it sure is
Adobe "Style Mimic" works entirely through complex cloud analysis

....and content aware osmisis

I'm not even sure what manual tools like clone stamp are for anymore QQ

8:34 PM
I thought about mentioning Kinko's or similar to that guy asking about jobs.... but I'd HATE to do that to anyone.

fuck! one of our largest distributors just got bought out by an umbrella company of one of our competitors

uh-oh

I just met their new head of automated gates last week too. He was really excited about seeing our stuff cause his first deal since coming over was a couple thousand dollars worth of our equipment which he had never actually seen in person
Hope they don't drop us, I don't see how they can if our dealers are still wanting it but might be harder to get them to keep pushing it

I would guess it depends on how close the parent company is to the products.

well the parent company and our competitor are both in Elmhurst, IL so guessing pretty close
the distributor is based in Denver

Q: Describing and comparing illustrations: is it a fit for the site?

illuminÉI was wondering if someone with little knowledge of the fundamentals of graphic design could ask a question along the lines of: Can the technique used in this drawing(ink pen) from a professional artist be briefly summarized/categorized and is it similar to what is seen in this other work?(showi...
