Q: Undo making a chat when people won't chat?

CakeyIf you talk to someone in comments too much the site says "move this to chat". Then you push a button, but what if the person won't chat with you? What is the point of the feature? There needs to be an "undo" because I think I made a mistake with turning a comment thread to a chat. Or at least ...

10:01 AM
hi

10:48 AM
@joojaa
are u still here?

2 hours later…
12:57 PM
hey, an empty room. That's odd.
hi, empty room.

morning

hey Matt, what's up?
@Matt what to do with this Q?
0
Q: How are pixels drawn on an LCD screen?

JUSTIN JOHNSCould you please tell me how a computer draws an pixel on an LCD screen. I have come to know that lines are drawn using pixels. However I couldn't get how could a pixel be plotted?

1:22 PM
moved it to super
would do better there

thumbs up

has any of vladamir's 3ds max questions had a single answer?

you dont see what I see though..

Joe
good morning ink spot

1:27 PM
sup

I see
hello Joe

Joe
hey hey hows it going
i was wondering if anyone used some form of "team creative" asset management software

I dont know how we can communicate to him any more but if wants to ask 3D questions than its great but I wish we knew how to help

Hey Joe

Joe
trying to setup some network filesystem system for our design team and im looking for some insight if there is any available software or cloud app that will let our designers check in / check out psds
@JohnB hey hows it going

1:31 PM
@Matt yeah, it's not that he's doing anything wrong, it's just that the expertise he's looking for isn't present on this site

Joe
@Vincent if it were blender i guarantee there are some guys on game development that are awesome at the 3d stuff
but i dont think any of them are using 3d studio max to my knowledge

Hmmm, I don't know of any software like that. But I think we have a version control question somewhere, maybe that will shed some light

Joe
@JohnB let me search it again 2 sec - and TY

@Joe did you know we have a blender stack?
@Joe there isnt anything like that

Joe
@Matt i did not, but now i need to check it out

Q: Version Control for Design files

phwdCan someone describe their workflow they use to handle multiple versions of a file ? For example, if more than one person worked on it or you explored an idea with the design then realized you have to undo state multiple times and hope you reach the previous state you needed Does one just sa...

Joe
@Matt i did a few searches and i was hoping that wasnt true but i havent found anything like a creative "digital asset management system" described in that question yet

@Joe the issue I ran into is you would have to wrap a DRM or something around the file it just wasnt worth it. We also realized if you have to think on the terms of checking in you might need to find a new designer if you dont trust them

Joe
@Matt well im obviously a tech guy, all i can do is setup software and suggest it has policy in place by the management - im not in the business of trusting :)

@Joe gotcha...

Joe
but you bring up a good point

1:38 PM
there are systems that monitor what transpires like time of download flagging if the file hasnt been downloaded etc etc

Joe
and btw thanks all for the suggestions... looks like i have some research still ahead of me
right right and that makes sense, but my biggest worry right now is multiple designers one psd
weve got projects that had too many hands on them and dozens of copies of the same psds with only slight changes
basically an organizational nightmare

sounds like it

@Joe why can you delegate certain aspects of the design?

Joe
i agree that probably isnt ideal, but the large volume sort of mandates if Designer Y is busy
client needs it now Designer X has to step up
and its mostly web and print work, so the argument has been made for splitting up "pages" into different source files
but if you have 12 page mocks, in 12 psds and client suggests header navigation changes... now we have 12 files to update
anyways how are things going

1:55 PM
@Joe you might not be the person to ask, but I wonder why Photoshop is being used for that
sounds like InDesign would be better

@JohnB I agree

Joe
sounds like you guys are on to something and i would love to know more
ive got very little indesign experience but we have access to it

Any time you're dealing with a multi-page publication, InDesign is what I would go with. It's basically Adobe's equivalent to Microsoft Word, while Photoshop would be MS Paint

@JohnB go wash out your mouth.

:D sorry! Was trying to make it relatable

2:02 PM
:P

You can still use Photoshop to edit graphics and link them in the InDesign document. They can be updated automatically when changes to the PSD are made

Joe
@Vincent haha
and i appreciate the dumb-ing this down for my programmer brain
im going to check out indesign.. i thought it was strictly for book layouts magazine stuff good for text
brb meeting time

ok

@Matt why?

because if you recommend a school in two years it may not be there resulting in a useless answer
the programs change all the time with colleges over here

true, but software solutions change over time as well.

ya but you can access the software throughout time but I dont think you can go to school if it doesnt exist =P

still, it might help some people in the next couple o' years. We can always close it when it's obsolete
at least, that's my €0,02 :)

2:39 PM
no thats cool

3:04 PM
I just realized we have a pets stack!!!!

uh, yeah. I've been reading some of it about some of the weirder behavious of my cats :)

Hi, guys

Hi @Ilan
I gotta scram for today. See you guys later!

@Vincent speaking of cats.. how do you handle clawing
@Vincent oh bummer.. later
@Ilan greetings!

hi
Matt
Do you have 1 min to see some small question?

3:19 PM
sure whats up

I learn some new tools on Ai
and cannot follow some simple step in the tute

whats the tut?

step 13 of this
I invoke "E" tool
and cannot convert the mesh as explained
Actually, I dont see any diffs between V tool and E (free transform) tool

are you grouping them after you made the duplicate?

yes
I have a group

3:23 PM
I would have just used the transform tool for all of it and be done.

"Manipulate the Mesh by skewing it using the Free Transform Tool (E), click the middle right handle of the bounding box and then hold both ⌘ and option together"
I don't understand this at all
:(

are you having trouble trying to manipulate it?

actually with "E" tool I can resize it
but I cannot skew it etc

what version are you using?

16
I mean I can rotate
as a whole

3:30 PM
Ill have to play with it to figure out. right now I dont have ai in front of me to manipulate it but I swore there was a skew option

ok
I will investigate it further
thanks :)
I'll ask @Scott too
"In Scott we trust"

oh I found something that may help
4
Q: Illustrator equivalent to Photoshop's skew tool

Tom RIn Photoshop the skew tool allows you to move each corner of the object being skewed independently. Is there an equivalent in Illustrator? Envelope distort seems overkill and harder to achieve the same result.

theres a trick to it

Thumb Up!
You see :)
it is solvable
will work on it now
thanks

anytime

3:50 PM

4:06 PM

4:19 PM
@JohnB its.. so dark.. lol
congrats though!!! jealous!
now make me a lot of stickers, lol

fixed

what brand is the shirt?

Hanes nano

so you got three stickers?

yep

4:28 PM
one for the jeep

haha yeah right

jeep not worthy

4:41 PM
never seen @scott mad like that before

The implication that I am anything less than ethical does not sit well with me.
I go out of my way to ensure I'm ethical in all respects.

I agree..

And I think perhaps there's a language barrier, no matter how slight, that I'm just seeing today.

so hows your day going other than that?

I may have over reacted, but someone telling me what I think and what I meant when I typed something then implying that I'm unethical for that was, frankly, infuriating. If my real name were used here it would be borderline libel.
OTher than that.. my day is good :)
I should check the mail to see if I got swag... I only check it every few days.

4:49 PM
Im going to tent my windows again, around 2% and put a sticker on my window so if I drive on a trip they still cant see me

I ordered this really cool little wood/leather table online.. it gets here yesterday.. has a HUGE hole int eh top of the table. I jsut love shippign BACK 100lb things in huge boxes :)

They ship from MA, so assuming they all went out on the same day then you should get it this week or early next week

I doubt I'll use any of it :)
I'm not a "sticker" guy. Might wear the shirt around the house depending on how it fits.

well send me the stickers then, lol

I know john's runnign around putting stickers on everything!
the car, the house, the pets, the kids....

5:07 PM
Anyone seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet?

yeah, I liked it a lot

I was wondering if it was any good
It looks fun.. but you never know

Did you see/enjoy The Avengers?

it was okay. They tend to get a bit too long in the battles at times.
But I'll give GotG a try :)
It has been in theaters for a coupel weeks which is a good sign

It's very similar to The Avengers. I liked it more because I didn't follow all the Marvel movies leading up to The Avengers very closely
only saw them on Netflix or on TV or whatever

5:17 PM
I thought the Avengers was a bit boring at times. The individual movies were better.
Kind of like Transformers 2 with it's 45 minute battle scene where you can't tell what's going on most of the time :)
But.. that's Michael Bay for you... :)

speaking of, I saw the new Ninja Turtles movie didn't do particularly well
no intention of seeing that

@Scott I hear it was good

I always remember that movies released in in August are crap :)

scott you see noah yet

Although.. Expendables 3 was better than Expendables 2
No not yet.. any good Matt?

5:20 PM
u saw 3!!
I can see why the pope didnt like the movie

ha!

it was an interesting movie and the simulation of the real thing I could get that but some parts at the end would make good debates

WEll that's sort of true for all religion based stories.
and fairy tales... :)
I did see Maleficent... which is really sleepign beauty... okay family flick

hey i liked that.. I really did like it
I thought that was very well done.
and yes it is sleeping beauty but a better version of it

yup.. didn't even realize it was sleepign beauty until half way through and the twists made it interesting

5:24 PM
you see Breaking Bad won the award?

Xmen days of futre past was pretty good.. better than the previous 3 xmen movies
Yeah.. that show should always win awards :)
Nothing else mixed comedy drama action and mystery as well :)
Godzilla was exactly what you would expect.

i had no intentions of seeing Godzilla
saw ride along

It's liek Godzilla vs mothra
Ride along was okay.. a bit forced but decent.
Spiderman 2 was very good

ride along was good for the beginning than got really old
glad I only spent 1.20 on it

yeah the jokes were the same throught the entire thing

5:29 PM
well dude voice was annoying after awhile

yeah like Chris Tucker

I cant stand more than 10 mins

Walkign dead season 4 dvd arived yesterday so I'll be binging on that the next week or so :)

not a big WD fan

Love WD.. second favorite show after Breaking Bad
Although.. season 3 was slow
Falling skies WAS good.. but this season is not great.. and it's ending after the next season
Other than that... that's pretty much all the TV I watch. I try new shows but they are all the same old thing rehashed
Take that back.. I do watch Hell on Wheels as well.

5:49 PM
a master @Scott.. you are aware that file you marked as duplicate was in regards to ratio and not resolution?

err... I guess not
reopened

lol
the master made an error!!!

I'm no "master"

master illustrator man
the only guy I know that has an ai tattoo on his arm

@Scott :)
Matt helped me to solve some issue, but I totally fail to perform "warp" around with mesh
can I ask you to see that?
I sword I tried for an hour
to solve that

5:56 PM
yeah I saw it @Ilan, that answer was pretty much what I would say

I don't get how the guy performed the "rounding" skew
all the deformation I can achieve are far from his smooth warp
:(

You've lost me. I don't see anything in that question about "rounding"

ok, I place here a link, if you have some tolerance to my questions... gomedia.us/zine/tutorials/vintage-typography-tutorial/…
step 13 - he perfrormed "round" warp of mesh
by mesh around the shape

He's justt moving the anchor points around

when I affect the mesh, I dont see this diagonal line
just :)
ok i continue
thanks

6:02 PM
He moved the top left anchor down.. making the angled edge
Just Direct Selection tool and click and move anchors.
Oh, in that step he did skew vertically. Then he moves anchors around to make the curves.

Q: What is a good comment to leave for closed critiques?

MattWe get a lot of critiques questions and I always wonder what would be the best way to not scare off a new user but leave a comment that will encourage them to edit their question after it has been closed in regards to not being in scope. So, I would like to know what you guys think and suggest f...

@scott

@Matt ??

your buddy wants the chat removed.. are you ok with that since he deleted his answer?

yeah I don't care.

so he it seems he removed his answer but not his downvote?

6:28 PM
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics... even if you win you're still mentally challenged :)
Eh.. I don't care abotu the vote
-2 wont' effect me in the grand scheme of things
and he got a badge for deleting an answer with a -3 score :)
Peer pressure!!!

ha ha

I've washed my hands of that mess. He's not going to understand and it's not worth my time to try and resolve anything.

I posted an answer to his meta question

Good answer. I was in the process of answering and stopped when I saw yours :)
Today's lesson... Want the rep points? Then always include images. Even if you are simply restating what was already posted in another answer :) graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/37890/…

6:47 PM
answer to what?

just in general :)

ok.. I want to leave a comment but in no way can I leave a comment that wont sound rude.....

Same here :)

Q: Critique: logo for a health product

DanielI’d like to know what you guys think about the logo below, there is some debate about the feathers of the tail, they are supposed to evoke an organic feeling, but others say they seem carelessly made. Should the shape of the feathers be more like the shape of the body (simpler curves and appeare...

and your comment?

6:51 PM
I really really want to say the wings look like manly swimmers.. but no way on this earth can I do it without being mean...
oh... ggrrrr

true. You shoudl reopen it though :)

I am

@Scott i noticed this too post a image and you cet voted, even if image is irrelevant

yup @joojaa and image in an answer always gets more votes.

i hate onscreen keyboards aaargh
other than pictures you never get votes fo imagemagick comments
apparently gd.se hates imagemagick

6:59 PM
No.. designers don't use imgmagik really at all.
And once they look into it, seeing its command line.. they are scared and write it off.

yeah i know. but if you ask about thousands of picture rezises it the RIGHT tool

My only experience with imgmagik is via PHP and web dev. I've never used it for anythign other than on a server.
Oh I agree it's useful.. it's jsut not ever taught anywhere in terms of design.

@Matt clawing? as in clipping them?

huh?
man even when I open the question I cant beat scotts answers, lol..

What? My answer isnt' any better.

7:03 PM
I think its good

commandlines are the best tool since keyboards. Anyway who am i to argue i draw a lot of vector drawings with something thats marginally more capable than notepad.
@Scott specializes in easy to give score type answers @Matt

I love svg
@joojaa I think he has powers over his icon that make people vote his questions

@joojaa command line stuff is always useful.. but I dare you to find a "design" program anywhere that even mentions it, let along explores it. It's one of those areas a designer has to find on their own and be interested enough to persue.
I think I'm becoming a bit of a joke to Matt recently.
Seems that way a bit
Anyway... I just post what's on my mind. I have honestly never strived to garner any votes.

i write eps manually SVG is jut frigging retarded in verbosity

I know Inkscape is retarded :) That's my extent of SVG knowldge :)

7:07 PM
I animate a lot of SVG
and develop a lot of SVG instead of using EPS

I jsut don't get a lot of call for SVG.. but I should use it more now that it's more widely supported with browsers.

I animate a lot in Maya ypu loose on all accounts @Matt

I took a class on Maya animations in college
that was a hard class
still prefer 3DS Max

how did that work out

it was an animation course

7:11 PM
Max is a bit like a tricycle sure it gets you there easily but when you want to push that last 10% it givrs up

Man, there were no software courses when I went to college, well other than Word and Wordperfect...... I'm freakin old.

Maya is just so much more productive once you get past the initial horror
we didnt either but thats another story. not that they could have taught me anything. I actually liked wordperfect
i started using computers whan iwas 7 my first program was written on the second day

@joojaa I used it because I was in the lighted sign industry

@Matt MAX? oh deary deary me

um.. ok

7:17 PM
i mean you could have gotten the same result with 1/3rd of the work but yeah sure

its what they used and it was purchased for me... careless really

not the worst choice
anyway supposedly you used maxwell as a renderer

ya I think thats what it was called

ok
so purchasing based on buzzword bingo. Pretty common strategy i suppose.
but thenagain my aversion is because i want to get things done right, but not nessecerily done
thats optional :) supposedly you get more done
:P so dont take me so seriously im a 3d snob

8:03 PM
@scott.. why arent thy not a member!!

'cuz I wouldn't participate :)
Print issues are a "necessary evil" for me. Not something I really enjoy dealing with. And ultimately, they are far too dependent upon the art. Honestly, I see that as a dead end stack. Once it gets to a certain point, all that can be said about print will be said about print. Interesting up until there. But ultimately a dead end.
And after that, it'll all be "How do I get this art to print"

is 3d printing related to?

There's a lot of good questions at that proposal. I just question how many more they may ultimately be.. but then, I could be wrong.

8:22 PM
why not add some
@Ilan no there is a site for that if I recall
@Scott WHAT

It's been 20 years since I was in a print or prepress environment. I wouldn't know what current issues are.

scott is old...
do you like this clip - youtube.com/watch?v=G3oyDZD2O9A

I guess even disco can make a come back

disco is cool

..see... :)

8:57 PM
3D printing == additive manufactiring

9:37 PM
Just got my GD swag today:-)

9:47 PM
@PearsonArtPhoto aah - saw Brendan got his
but alas - i live on the fringes of the world, so we will see how long it takes to reach us out here On The Edge

1 hour later…
11:00 PM
@PearsonArtPhoto yup, got mine today as well. Nice stuff.

11:22 PM
I got swag!

11:42 PM
I was really impressed that the sent me the magenta and white iPhone 5s
