hi!
Jay Hanlon on September 16, 2013

Stack Overflow officially launched on September 15, 2008. In five short years, you’ve answered over 5 million questions on more than 100 sites, and helped hundreds of millions of people find the answers they needed. Today, we want to celebrate how, together, we changed one small corner of the Internet for the better.

We want to hear your stories about how someone on Stack Exchange helped you.

Before it went into beta, stackoverflow.com had a comic on the landing page that came to symbolize what we were setting out to do: …

@Yisela ola

how's it going, Matt?

ready for the day to end
hi @Scott

@Matt_2.0 $60/hr for illustration is way, way low. After all only you can create illustrations the way you do.
Hey matt :)

hi Scott

8:20 PM
oh you know I was just making an example, lol

Hi Yisela!

the goal was to implement a cat meme

I know .. and I was jsut cracking wise :)
I forgot the smiley... and can't edit comments
Look man.. I watched Jane die... I could have saved her, but I didn't.

breaking bad was great last night

frakin fantastic

8:24 PM
I've been realizing lately, that besides Saul, I don't really like any of the main characters in the show

He's come full circle. From treating meth dealers as family, to treating family like meth dealers

oh the last two I hope are good

based on last nights.. they must be :)
More emmy's for sure
And Cranston.. crying about Hank while scolding Skyler.. jsut genius

Hi Anuj

8:28 PM
hey Scott

@Scott great
@Yisela can I pick your brain tonight on skype? If you are free?

Absolutely, tonight here or tonight there?
it's 8:30am here, so I won't be home for a long time

on skype. Ill hit you up later tonight while working and ask then

no problem
you are lucky because I'm not feeling mean today! :D

8:31 PM

You feel mean a lot, Yisela?

she is a cat
ninja that is

a ninja cat?
@AnujKaithwas did you make it? It looks amazing!

Doesn't "Yisela" mean "Death Kitty" in Aborigine?

8:34 PM
haha

@Yisela yes :) thank you, I am going to add some space age towers in that.

new superhero name

@Eric get your car fixed?

this is what it means ;)

is there a female version? ;)

interesting! "You do not like to relinquish control" :D

Me either Yisela.. that must be why you hate me :)

I do not hate anyone!

Okay... strongly dislike and look for an opportunity to unleash the death kitty :)

I was looking for some positive reinforcement in my name description, but it seems like there isn't any

8:44 PM
i think it's false. it makes a mockery of me :o

"Yiselas are good-natured and love everything in the world"

It does seem a bit on the negative side Yisela
Mine's pretty close
with one or two exceptions

"The name of Scott creates a quick, analytical, and clever mind; you are creative, versatile, original, and independent." I want something like that in MY description too!
"Patience is not your forte." :P

Copy/Paste :)
That's the exception.. I'm exceptionally patient by nature

what about mine

says I am faulty...

I'm beginning to think it picks random stuff from the DB

404 error I suppose I am

hahaa

8:47 PM
@Scott I just tried to analyze "graphicdesign" and it says it doesn't exist, so it's not just putting stuff together

but there are like 40 yiselas in the world, so I'm surprised

Oh.. you can only view 10 pages, then it wants you to pay

simple, remove the DSL cable from the router :D

@Yisela There she goes.. tryign to control everything :)

8:48 PM
and of course, ctrl+shift+del

My name: "Your whole nervous system could be affected by the intense emotional influence of this name."

wow
Do you twitch constantly Johannes?

Haha, why?

The whole nervous system effected just by your name

sup @Johannes

8:53 PM
Hey @Matt.
@Matt_2.0
I'm a little twitchy, admittedly.

I was thinking more like....

I'm glad to be thought of as a kitten.

oh another cat!

But I'm probably more crab-like.

9:01 PM
yeah, i see you Johannes :D

Are you behind me right now?

no, we both are in avatar.
:P
i am turuk makto, and you can be tsutay :D

?
I think I'm just confused.

@Johannes third dimension that

@Matt_2.0 my car's gone =/

9:03 PM
wow.. @Yisela just warped time and left and in the same instance came back O_O
@Eric do tell

a valve on the engine melted, was going to be $2.5k + needed other things, and the car was only worth about $1.5k at this point
plan is to get a new one once I move back to NJ

what was the car Eric?

Why would you go back to NJ, @Eric?

not that many jobs in VT

Yeah but it's NJ ;p

9:05 PM
the part of VT I'm in is utterly awesome in soo many ways, but I'm over the college/early 20's shit show scene, so I want to move to philly
yeh, I'm not that fond of NJ, but where I'm going, I'll be able to find a job in philly, and the plan is to move there soon after

I spent 8 years in NJ, that was more than enough time for me.
but Philly is nice.

I spent 19 =/

8 is the longest I've ever spent anywhere.

I've done 6 years in VT now
where are you from?
/where have you been from

Originally from Germany. Lived 4 years in Indiana, 8 in NJ, and have been in Utah for 3.

9:11 PM
nice, how's life in Utah? Is it kind of rural, or are you in a populated area?

I'm near Salt Lake so it's not bad at all.
What kind of work do you do?

web design, but I was on a one year contract to design courseware GUIs for the Air Guard and that ended last week
so I'm moving back to NJ now to find work in/around philly

There's a big market for web developers/designers out here.
In case you ever feel the want to head west :)

I have to decide if I want to keep working with software UI or go back to web..

9:19 PM
hey since you both are americans, and I am aware that in the central govt., you guys have a 2 party system, but what about the state politics? or the district/regional level, how are the candidates accountable to the central govt.? or is it that you have multi party system for states?

Company I work for, their software is a website, so it's kind of one and the same

@Johannes that would be ideal I think
web apps :)

Yeah
Working right now >.>
And @AnujKaithwas, even on a state level there are two parties.

so what is the nomenclature, and how are the representatives for the state elected?

by whoever has the most power and money

9:22 PM
nomenclature of what?
And people vote on their representatives.

yeah, so how are they elected?chosen?

i mean, not anyone can stand up and say that I want to join repbulicans or democratics.

Yes anyone can

then you will have to be famous, and someone who has done something :|

9:25 PM
No. Anyone who meets the legal requirements can run for office.
You don't have to be famous. In fact 99% of politicians are not famous

^That.
You don't even have to be American-born
only if you want to become president.

so, i say i want to join obama's party and stand for state election, then what?

you must lie to the people
and be voted into office

okay, and the district elections?

You have to campaign, get your name out there, probably get nominated, and then voted for.

9:27 PM
while getting funding by the companies who are paying you under their pocket so you will do them a favor and make them more money

All elections work basically the same way, just one a bigger/smaller level
Just wiki it!
:p

The United States has a federal government, with elected officials at the federal (national), state and local levels. On a national level, the head of state, the President, is elected indirectly by the people, through an Electoral College. Today, the electors virtually always vote with the popular vote of their state. All members of the federal legislature, the Congress, are directly elected. There are many elected offices at state level, each state having at least an elective governor and legislature. There are also elected offices at the local level, in counties and cities. It is estimat...

yeah, wiki isn't quite elaborate

And Matt has a point. Now days, who ever has the most money tends to win more often.

Well i don't think you'll get any more elaborate information from us :p

9:29 PM
well what could be an elaborate source than citizens :)

Citizens who are more politically involved :p
besides, I'm not a citizen.
I just live here.

citizens who are aware of the politics :D

Wiki is written by community :)

yeah, let's not take it there, we know it and it's ideal, but ideal is what does not happen mostly.

@Johannes taking our jobs!!!

9:31 PM
@JohnB, Do you want to work two jobs?

no ty you can keep it

And @AnujKaithwas, this is a Gd chat room, not a political one. I don't know how good the information we provide here will be :p

I do! But not if that means Utah

@AnujKaithwas nobody's accountable for anything in the US, unless you're poor, then you go to prison and work for 20¢ a day for a rich person somewhere

What's wrong with Utah?

9:32 PM
Mormons

eh... it's utah :)

The Mormon religion is a religion just like any other religion is a religion. -- for the most part. Utah is a beautiful state!
But I'm working towards moving to Cali one day.

@Scott ya Ive spent a lot of time working with politicians and Ive never met only but a few decent people out of hundreds of selfish aholes that act like they are god gift

Better than NJ by leaps and bounds anyway.

oh snap.. state debate, grabs popcorn

9:34 PM
Johannes.. I like the State.. but not so much the population :)

But I think we can all agree nothing is worse than Nebraska

I had family in Utah growing up
Nebraska is KILLER for flying paper airplanes... nothign for them to bump into

@Johannes glad you didnt say kentucky

not going to lie, mormons creep me out a tiny bit

The population?

9:35 PM
@Johannes by amount or related, lol

Mormons for the most part. I won't get into religion here, it's not the place for it. But a whole state essentially dedicated to Mormonism is well......

Mormons admittedly make up a good amount of the population (I think about 50%) but usually religion isn't an issue unless you want to date a Mormon girl :)

I'm certain it's not everyone though
just the ones who are loudest

Utah is surprisingly blue for a red state, which helps me tolerate it.

But a Mormon population controls government to a degree

9:36 PM
Only thing that bums me out is that Sunday's are dead.

Just like Christianity controls the Federal elections a great deal

well, that's because a lot of politicians are Mormon in Utah
Right.

what, the church still influences people at top positions?!

Basically, Utah adds another level of religion to laws or regulations... not something I'm fond of

No, but that doesn't really make the state worse to live in than any other state. It's just you can pin the reason to Mormonism in Utah, where as in other places you have to find other excuses as to why the government sucks.

9:38 PM
Yes Anuj. We are, as a country, religious. Not everyone is, but a politician woudl have a hard time getting elected if they were openly an atheist

glad I just live in the south

@Johannes True

does a large mormon population mean everyone's more conservative on average?

I have strong views on Mormonism Johannes... so... that influences my opinion of Utah in general

there are conservatives all over, even in VT, but here, only a small portion are mormon

9:39 PM
Actually, Utah is surprisingly liberal for it being a red state.
But Mormons of course vary.

Actually.. I have strong views on religion in general
but anyway... politics and religion don't make for civil conversation :)

@Scott me too, but I just try to avoid the really really religious

There are those who call themselves Mormon but you'd never be able to tell. And then there's Mormon's who are much more into the religion. So basically -- like every other religion.

I wont lie, I enjoy talking about religion if I meet a sort of religious girl. It's fun to feel like you're teaching/exchanging views they've never been introduced to

In my opinion all religions are basically the same. The back story might vary, but at the end of the day religion is religion and I'll leave it at that.

9:41 PM
yeah, just like religion and history :)

apparently, a lot of the bosnians around me, most of which came here at a young age as refugees, are muslim, but you can't tell. They're like when an ordinary person identifies as christian because their family is christian, and they believe in god

And for the record I'm not religious at all, but I'm happy to let anyone believe what they want to believe as long as it's not hurting someone.
Exactly, Eric. Many mormons are just like that.
Not surprisingly, the one thing we all have in common is that we're human, so certain things are universal.

I am too Johannes. I take issue with religious zealots who think everyone needs to be "saved' or indoctrinated into their personal beliefs.

Right. But calling all Mormons religious zealots of all Muslims terrorists is a very narrow-minded view. Sure, those types of people exist but that doesn't make up the entire faith.

I didn't call all Mormons zealots.

9:45 PM
to be fair, mormonism is kind of based off something more recent, more silly, and more sexist/socially messed up in terms of origin

yeah but silly is relative.

Mormonism is Scientology without the celebrities :)

i think all religions are silly to some extent
I think that's a stretch, Scott.

polygamy is really messed up though

Polygamy is not a thing in modern mormonism

9:46 PM
which I know most of them don't practice that, but still

See.. people get way too serious when talking about imaginary all powerful zombie-like fabrications :)

Scientology is much more cult-like. And they have basically killed people.

@Johannes Because it's illegal.

but when you say modern, the religion's not even 200 years old, and it's only recent that they've abandoned polygamy because the government was getting involved breaking it up

Scientology hasn't killed people. THAT"s a stretch

9:47 PM
They have let people die by not getting them medical attention.

That's not scientology

Scientology believe they can cure mental illnesses
And mentally ill people have died because of scientology

anyways whose going for the bengals tonight?

And Mormons believe John Smith found the Word.

Sure.

9:48 PM
Not a football fan Matt. :) But yeah...... I get the misdirect
:)

I haven't heard of anyone being starved to death or bleeding out because of mormonism though.
I find it an unfair comparison is all.

full house here this afternoon
does everyone seem to do app design here?

I don't do app design.
I'm a web developer.

I dont' do app design

me neither actually :)

9:51 PM
Print media --magazines, posters, books, business cards, etc. And thank you, @Matt_2.0.

@BESW thanks for what?

Probably for changing the subject :p

yeah... like I posted.. never makes for good conversation

eh... haven't there been mass incestuous pedophile rings broken up under mormonism?
I know that's latter day saints stuff, but that's still mormonism, even they don't do it anymore

@Scott I think it just can offend people in the wrong direction.

9:52 PM
Under the fundamental nutcase mormons, yes there have. But that's no indication on mormonism as a whole.

true Matt. And there are so many directions to shoot from :)

I just think most people don't know anything about Utah and judge is very quickly based on the religion.

so what version of Adobe is everyone running?
Im still on CS5.5

cs5

CS4 through CC

9:53 PM
I have both CS5.1 and CS6

when I get my next job, and income's steady, I'm going to do CC

5.5 myself.

@Scott really why?

CC at work, CS2 at home xD

I use CS6 for most stuff.. Indesign CS5.5. (Because I like it better). CS4 because I have clients who use CS4. And CC because it was free.

9:54 PM
I know scott has a mac but any Linux users here?

The only CC apps I really use are Photoshop (becuase versions don't really matter) and Premier Pro because I do so little video work.

I don't even know what CC is.

Creative Cloud
The rental junk

Ah, that the subscription based Photoshop?

yeah

9:55 PM
I hate that.
Will they still be selling licenses?
Or only subscriptions?

me too... which is why I dont' use it and if I didn't get it free I wouldn't have it
They dont' sell licenses for CC
Only for CS6

But I mean.. if they release PS CS7
will it only be CC or also license based?

There will never be a CS7

well that answers my question.

CS6 is the last version to have perpetual licenses

9:56 PM
just subscription updates

can you buy a "snapshot" of a CC version?

I shouldn't say "never" Adobe could alter their position. but chances of that are minute.

Or is it an all-or-nothing kind of deal with the subscription?

You can pay for a 1 month subscription

But then you can't use the program after 1 month, right?

9:57 PM
right
and your files can't be opened

That's dumb.

it's as anti-consumer as anti-consumer can be

aren't month-to-month subscriptions part of a 1-year commitment?

You can do annual or month-to-month.

I thought the minimum plan was a year'

9:59 PM
month-to-month is more pricey though.

You get a discount if you agree to 1 year in advance

do you actually own the apps in iTunes?

I wonder how much money they are losing/gaining from this move.
