So
critique questions
do we allow them
that is the question
@Yisela @Matt_2.0 awake?
(and anyone else lurking)

2:04 AM
yes?
I summon @JohnB

ayo
alright so Writers.SE has some solid guidelines for critique questions
16
Q: What are the guidelines for asking for a critique of my work?

justktI want to ask for a critique of my work? Can I do that here?

I've been tossing the idea around in my head of lobbying for a similar structure here
thoughts?
also did you come up with a time for Saturday's event?

I think it's a great post and we should duplicate it word by word except where it says writers :P

I will have access to a computer, so I can come

thinking 1200-1400 so everyone may have a time to join

are you going somewhere on holidays John?

2:07 AM
no I was going to be splitting wood all day but I think I cancelled that

skype me the link

writer thing

@Matt_2.0 Sunday 5 am... well...

thats 5am for you?

2:10 AM
xD
yes
I think.. is that new york time?

we can figure it out over the next week

oh is this next saturday?

yes this saturday would be toooooo quick no?

oh
well I moved my log splitting to next satuday so I could make it!

we can do it if you want
ok I guess we will do it then

2:11 AM
no no I'm joking

only thing I had planned was to go look at a house

google maps man

haha
does it come with a white fence?

why yes it does..

because it's one of the first things I remember about you, you mentioned you wanted a house with a white fence
(omg I DO sound like a stalker half of the time)

2:14 AM
dont know about white but I want a fence
@scott creeping
anyone know how to exist out of the type tool in CS5.5 Photoshop

esc?

nope doesnt work

esc then v?

well arent you wonderful ;)

2:24 AM
actually that doesn't work for me so I agree with Yisela
hitting esc deletes what I just typed
is there a hotkey to commit current edits?
ctrl + enter apparently

Huh? Creeping? Wha??

Wasn't that a scene from iRobot?

probably

I love how they fall and just stay there

2:31 AM
Matt.. what I meant is I critique without emotions in mind... I end up hurting a lot of feelings. When I went to school, they taught us well to separate personal from the work. I had work destroyed, spit on (literally) and trashed. I tend to not be kind enough if I find things wrong. I don't mean to be harsh, but it comes out like that most of the time.
So... for a live critique.. it's probably best I shut the hell up :)

spit on....what

I had my work spit on.

that sounds a little extreme, must have been a classy individual

Those were the days when you made presentation boards and had physical pieces to critique.
It was the way the class went. Sub-par was not acceptable. I admitted the work was bad so it's not like the guy just did it out of the blue :)
I actually smiled and nodded in agreement at the time.

meh, I don't see myself spitting on anyone's work regardless of what I think

2:38 AM
Actually, it was a good lesson for me. I don't advocate doing that, but it was a turning point in my work.
I've never learned from anyone who simply says, "Oh that's nice."

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” (The Internet)

I agree, candid feedback is the most helpful

(too cheesy)

oh so if you watch.. you get to see Yisela edit a comment 15 times :)

give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. teach a man to give a man to fish, and you've got recursion -JohnB, August 2013

2:42 AM
heh

xD

Give a man a fish and you imbued him with the smell as well.
speaking of fish... dinner time. see y'all later.

@JohnB do you know any site that has good examples of visual representations? graphs and so?

like infographics? (buzzword alert)

could be, yes
any complex information represented in simple graphics

2:49 AM
does graphjam.com count

maybe, thanks :)

those are more comical
but that's all I know off the top of my head

I have a very interesting challenge ahead
I have to represent how much work a person does. It's counted in "documents". So I was using blocks (1 for each), with different colors depending on what kind of doc it was
it made it very easy to compare people's workload visually
but now I have to add the length of the document to the graphics

that's what people are to you? just little pieces of paper?

2:57 AM
neat

3:26 AM
whoops

1 hour later…
4:41 AM
Halo!

hi Anuj!
how's it going?

hi Yisela, it's good, how about you?

good, about to leave work (it's almost 5pm here)
you are in India, right?

Yeah, I am from India.

where in India? I have friends in Bangalore and Goa
(I want to visit them next year, maybe)

4:48 AM
The parent state of Goa, Maharashtra, do you know Ajanta or Ellora caves? Renowned for Cave Paintings?
oh great, I don't know about Bangalore, but Goa seems to be a nice place for rest.

I haven't been yet, so I don't anything about it
I lived with Indian friends, but they went back home

okay, it's good, we see very few Indians on the beaches in Goa :)
oh, so did they make you eat the food ;)

well, I want to see as much of India as I can when I go
I'm not particularly interested in the beaches (though beaches are fine for a couple of days)

what fascinates you about India?

fascination is a strong word! But history and religion mainly

4:52 AM
the history is good, I don't understand about your feeling about the religion, the present is pretty much messed up.

I'm interested in Hinduism (although my friends, being from Goa, were mostly catholic)

oh! okay, then you will have to visit Haridwar, and Banaras, these two places are considered to be divine.

and I might be wrong with this, but people I've met that have travelled or stayed there for a while told me you could see everyone seems more.. spiritual than in other places, and I would like to see that

and maybe if you have time, you could go to visit a holy shrine.

would love to see everything
perhaps spend some time in an ashram

4:56 AM
Yeah, you can say that.

it must sound ridiculous to you, you are from there
I bet you are tired of tourists looking for spirituality :)

nope, it is not ridiculous, and I am not afraid of the tourists looking around for spirituality either.
but if you stay at a common ashram, you will have to forget about the word hygiene and facilities, and staying at an Osho ashram or "The art of living" guy's ashram is totally different. Most foreigners opt for these two ashrams.
but then, they are very much different.

I was thinking of the Art of Living one, because I did the courses
would be more interested in the 'real' ones, but I'm not sure how long I could do it for
I'll see when the time comes :)
but now it's time to leave work, so it's a great time :D
talk to you later!

cya.
@Yisela, but again, ashrams where not made for kings and the riches

2 hours later…
6:40 AM
@yisela, @johnb are contests, critiques and anything we are trying to generate for GD only allowed in meta or can we post it on main?

7 hours later…

@Matt_2.0 meta

1:43 PM
morning

hi guys
what are your thoughts on the straight line question?
I tried to improve it

its a bad question

then surely it should be closed, but on what grounds?

2:00 PM
morning

well you read what I had to pull info wise.

What was the question originally?
looks like he's just asking how to get rid of aliasing, which is strange that he knows the term aliasing but doesn't know how it works or how to remove it (did you add that dom?), and someone gave a thorough answer explaining aliasing/anti-aliasing
which is probably a nice, fundamental thing have/get out of the way as a question on GD SE

yh I added the aliasing, the title was real bad before

very basic question, but something I could see a lot of print designers asking
gotcha, but you might want to change it again

exactly, unless theres a doop its a good beginners question

2:05 PM
the term aliasing probably isn't familiar to people looking up this question
right
but the way he described the line as being jagged or saw like, is probably how beginners would search this
a beginner looking for the answer could likely overlook the term aliasing because they don't know what it means
you have to think like an SEO
what would your audience seach, not what's correct, or what you would search

that's why I left all of his content in
feel free to edit it to improve if you can elaborate better

it definitely explains it once you click on it and read it for a beginner, but the title "How to reduce Aliasing", while correct and the people who know the answer know what this question's going to be about, it is probably going to be overlooked by a beginner

unless they find it in search, through its content

@user1803405 exactly, what I dont understand is how he knew what it was but it was like pulling teeth on trying to figure out how he got there.

edited
Dominic added the word aliasing
that threw me off to
I changed the title, though I left the word aliasing in there, so it might still look like an odd question for people who get it, but it will serve its purpose for beginners looking up the question

2:11 PM
can you just change the first letter of each word you added to a capital letter please
otherwise it looks really odd
I gotta pop out, back in a bit

how is everyone doing today =)

done

I've approved, needs one more

i blessed it.. lol

34, let's do this

2:17 PM
34 what?

that's the number of the day!
goal: under 10

oh emails.. peeww.. Not awake yet

am I wrong in asking questions about what he did to create the image?

Q: How to Remove Jagged Edge (Aliasing) on a Straight Diagonal Line

C-LinkThis is 120px X 283px dimension, PNG image. When using it in website the same image dimension is set through css but in the browser view it is showing like a saw like this Is it possible to draw without any little curve? Is there a file format or method I can save with that will reduce the...

oh off topic.. blood money was AWESOME!

graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/20400/… there are lots of duplicates of this, somewhere...
or at least 1 I think

Q: Photoshop curved Shadow

PerplexedHow to create the shadow effect as per the url/image below? Specifically, the rounded/curved shadow at the bottom:

that's the one
does that work for GIMP as well?

this does:

Q: Blending a drop shadow seamlessly

eastboundrI need to apply shadow to an overarching border, however so far I've created the shadow with CSS, and since the overarching border is formed by two boxes, the shadow overlaps. My solution to this is to cover up the overlapping part with an image that looks like a seamless blend, however I'm not...

2:55 PM
@Matt_2.0 Nope, I was wondering that too, the mention of css was weird
maybe he was asking how to remove aliasing in css?
We may have just taken a confusing question and edited it down to a basic question about what anti aliasing is

@Matt_2.0 It certainly was, it's going to be a descent in to hell from here I think

Hello.

@Aaron Hey!

@JohnB How is your day going?

@Aaron alright, trying to chip away at a growing pile of things to do
what about you?

3:09 PM
Trying to draw some swords for fun in Paint. (Only program I have available.) I am trying to find how big I need to make it to make it look smooth.

oh boy
Have you considered another program? Or happy with Paint?
Paint.NET might interest you

It is not my computer so I didn't want to get into too much stuff online or download stuff.

ah.

I will check out Paint.net though thank you.
Paint.net is a place to get products to use not a virtual paint program?

confusing name since they don't own the domain :P
there might be a portable version that you wouldn't have to install

3:18 PM
Ah. Thank you. I will look into it.

Depending on your skill level, GIMP would probably be the next step up in terms of free software
GIMP > Paint.NET > MSPaint
but it can be intimidating if all you are used to is Paint

I have taken a graphic arts class so I know how to use photoshop and Illustrator. It has been awhile but I remember the basics. I have been told GIMP is much like photoshop.

photoshop 7 is also free for dl somewhere i believe
or maybe it's 6
one of the pretty damn old photoshops is free

@user1803405 as I said though I can't download stuff.

3:33 PM
CS2 is "free"
they shut down their activation servers, but it's not abandonware
they basically said "we are shutting down our activation servers, and leaving this serial key on our website, but don't install it unless you've bought it. honor system!"
or maybe that does fit the definition of abandonware
so I needed to convert 13 cm to inches
googling "13cm in inches" brings up a lot of unwanted results

4:26 PM
new computer =)
@JohnB sounds personal
@Aaron I would suggest inkscape

Inkscape?

yes

What is it? Online or download?

download

I can't download.

4:34 PM
why not? just curious

Not my computer.
They don't mind me using what is on it but said not to download anything.

oh

5:22 PM
.
am I still user1803?

@user1803405 you need to set your chat user to the correct parent site, I think

5:42 PM
nice

yay

Do retina screens change the physical size of images on the web which don't have specified heights and widths?

dunno! Never even seen one in person

iphones have retina screns, but I'm used to pinch and zoon for non-optimized sites, so I expect things to be a little out of order

Joonas might know, if he is reading this

5:48 PM
but I wonder if on macbooks / imacs with retina displays, if the web in general gets kind of disheveled looking, as far as I know a 100 x 100 image that doesn't have a height or width applied to it, will be physically small, whereas other elements with px are by default counted as 2 pixels

Joonas, our guardian angel of device related questions
(he has all of them)

@Joonas Thanks

hi

what's good Matt

6:00 PM
buidling a new server =)

yes it is supposed to take over mankind

oh nice

hey thats her evil name.. dont call her that
wait... I just realized Joonas is in the chat, lol

6:06 PM
No I'm not...

you are joonas bot -.1

6:25 PM
SKYNET, means I am to see the pretty woman in red!!! :D

??

How long should a quote last?

30 days is normal

I wonder if explicitly adding a quote expiration date increases the likelihood of someone placing an order

well it makes them know that the quote is only good for a few days plus covers your back

6:42 PM
bout to hike up the price on a loyal and consistent customer, we'll see how this goes

how much increase?

$8,250 → $8,500
I have my "if you were a new customer, I would have quoted you at ____, but since you've ordered previously...." speech ready
Which is true. This is one handed down to me from a sales guy that no longer works here, he loved giving people huge price breaks

7:02 PM
lol
get em john!
add comission
make it 8725

5% would be nice

Only a 3% increase
I can see a client noticing that, but it doesn't seem outrageously higher

Q: Why is flat design not as common on the desktop?

XylonFlat design has become extremely popular since the release of Windows 8, but I cannot find as many examples of it on the desktop as I do on the web and mobile apps. By desktop examples I mean Windows 7/Vista/XP visual styles, Gtk/QT themes and Linux desktops. I don't think there are as many appli...

I think this question's legitimate
if we have a tag for trends it would be perfect under that

but its based on opinion and that is something we do not allow

Q: Font that looks like another font or how to edit the font

axrwkrI found a font recently and I really like it, but the numbers in the font don't look right, so I was wondering if I could post a question about either finding a font that looks the same but has numbers that fit in better with the alphanumeric characters or how I might go about editing the font to...
