@Federico My father flew through WW2, about half in the Ferry Command and half as an instructor (after he lost a lung when an O2 bottle exploded). I can remember him mentioning that when training new pilots on tailwheel aircraft, they would sometimes start the takeoff run on the right side of a wide runway to give them a better chance of getting directional control before running off the left side of the runway. It was not, at least as I remember, a standard procedure for experienced pilots.
@Federico Also, there were a few airports with a square runway, each side being long enough for takeoffs and landings of trainer aircraft. After the war, these square runways were not maintained and fell into disrepair except of a single lane down the middle for use as a normal runway. Chico, CA was one such airport. I remember landing there in the 1950s when the square was still usable, although weeds were coming up through the paving, except of course for the standard runway lane.
