12:05 AM
Well here goes nothing...

12:17 AM
PHEW
Phone working again, looks like my data is intact

Bob
O.o
That was random
Congrats, though

Thanks
Looks like everything's intact
I think I'll leave it un-rooted for now... too risky a time
Can't afford any more lost time
And you know what the irony is? Last few times I went on holiday I purposefully took a copy of the full 2GB flash image for my phone with me just in case but stopped doing it because I was like why the hell would I ever need that

12:46 AM
just think of all the things you learned in the process. someday you may need to hack a google bot to stop it from making another mass grave full of bodies :-)
Blurting out phrases like "robots safer than human" recode.net/2016/1/8/11588618/…

tho to be fair, they need to split the various flavours of t-bolt

speaking of . . no Analog VGA on these new nvidia cards.

got DVI-I?

i hope that is some of the power savings.
DVI-D i guess only. but the 480 is comming with HDMI and DP, but not DVI
I did not see yet if AMD dropped the VGA (on the dvi) yet.

and practically? VGA is dead

12:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek Hang on, does that mean Apple machines don't have DVD drives?

the only real standards that should matter are DP and HDMI, except for legacy purposes.
@BenN I think not

I don't use Apple things, so I'm just trying to read the chart

I can't think of a modern system that has one...

Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but every machine at home, at school, and at work has a DVD drive

I don't have an optical drive at the moment

12:53 AM
I didn't know popular machines shipped without optical drives

er. Its a logical thing to drop on most low end machines.
I don't have one on my desktop. I figured I'd install one when I needed it... and that hasn't happened

I only need it rarely, but when I do it's really important (e.g. somebody shipped me a DVD, or I only have a disc for an OS thing)

I have a USB optical drive.
Somewhere.

Oooh, that's neat

or I pull out my old laptop and use the one there

12:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah, was gonna say. Also headphone jack rumoured to be on its way out, do Apple laptops even have HDMI? I don't recall seeing one.
iMacs certainly don't have it either.

hm, and no mention of DP
apparently apple TV
and 'older' laptops maybe?

@Psycogeek No analogue VGA on any new cards. AMD ditched it a generation or two before Nvidia and Intel supposedly don't support it anymore either, though many OEMs still incorporate it somehow
@Psycogeek AMD dropped it two generations ago.

I do wonder, has HDMI become standard on the extreme low end monitors yet?
Last time I cheaped out, I got DVI and VGA

R9 290 already had only DVI-D, that's why I returned mine.
@JourneymanGeek Nope, I returned an extreme low end monitor recently for having VGA only.
My current extreme low end monitor has VGA, DVI, HDMI, and MHL

ah
heh
my current 'cheapish' monitor does VGA (3x) HDMI 2.0 and DP.

1:02 AM
HP business PCs and monitors seem to all come with displayport first and foremost, sometimes also with VGA second, but very rarely HDMI or DVI

Bob
@qwertyuiop ...I'm considering doing that now -_-

@Bob I would recommend it, especially if you're not likely to be near a fast/unlimited Internet connection.

vga dead, I only have had to use VGA for testing, cable, card, monitor, backup connect. but i do have one high priced projector that is VGA or "component"

Incidentally, this isn't the first time I've had to download a 2GB Samsung firmware image over 3G/4G to recover a bricked device while away from home.
And I suspect it won't be the last.

@qwertyuiop DP's supposed to be the 'standard'
but a lot of cheaper devices (wierdly) come with HDMI

1:05 AM
APBD (April) seems to be the most recent UK firmware I could find...
It's one version newer than what I had but one month older than yours it seems.
@JourneymanGeek DP is God.

in the real world (not the geek world) we do have to realise that there are still CRTs even in use out there, in places like kids bedrooms and all. fact is i still use a beastly 27 inch one in my bedroom.

@Psycogeek you're an outlier who hates all new tech ;p

And if anyone isn't convinced of the superiority of DisplayPort yet... May I point you to the $10 adapters that'll turn any compatible DisplayPort or mDP port into HDMI 2.0, VGA, and/or DVI in a single almost-passive box

granted, I have a plasma tv that does VGA and composit only

I would love to still be using a CRT...

1:07 AM
@qwertyuiop its also 'cheaper' to licence.

@JourneymanGeek tell that to the customers who were running win95 on 16 meg ram machines :-)

tho, I think the holy grail to me is DP over USB C

Bob
@qwertyuiop there's no such thing as a fast/unlimited connection here :P

@Psycogeek the ones who drop off their PCs on horse drawn carts?

Bob
except maybe in uni, which I'm not

1:08 AM
There's only one LCD monitor I've ever come across that's close to CRT quality for contrast and refresh rate, and it's highly expensive due to the fact it's hugely above average for both.
@JourneymanGeek unless you're HP

Some people could use the same washer dryer dishwasher and computer for 20 years, just because it (doenst have win10) works :-)

@qwertyuiop ._.
DP is royalty free. HDMI isn't, right?

Because they equip their DisplayPort ports with HDMI alternate mode, which I assume requires them to license the HDMI interface on top
And HDMI gives you cheaper licensing if you put their logo on the box, which HP don't, so it's a double whammy

Bob
@qwertyuiop I bricked a phone (S4) pre-exam once... had to wait till I got home to fix it

(Unless outputting HDMI over DP alternate mode doesn't require an HDMI license, in which case... Yeah its cheaper)

1:09 AM
that's silly 0_0

@JourneymanGeek having a single port that can output anything isn't silly, it's awesome.

@qwertyuiop sticking a logo on a box would be smart ;p

@JourneymanGeek But also bound to confuse people since it doesn't have a physical HDMI port anywhere

Then again, DVI => HDMI adapters/cables basically work off the same principle
And I don't recall anyone mentioning them requiring licenses

I hate when developers ask for debug logs. didnt you already cause me enough trouble, and isnt it your job to test and debug :-) When it is freeware i am more likely to comply.

Sometimes problems only show up under very particular circumstances
As a developer I find crash logs very helpful

seems like it is easier for them to dubug 1, than for me to debug 20 :-|

I'm sure it is, but without the logs they might not know what part to debug

1:28 AM
using about 150 total pieces of software, it is impractical that i can assist them in all thier endevours and still have a life.

For me it's mostly been a "ah, that's the function that crashed" that helped me solve the problem
Of course you're not obligated to send them stuff, but it is in both of your best interests
You could tell them to go sign up for Windows Error Reporting though, that's a good idea

yes it always has been in my best interest to both, indicate how the problems occur (or debug) , and to give them a list of what would be the best thing to do for the program. One program (almost) became completly re-designed for ME :-) then was obsolete in 1.5 years.

Bob
@Psycogeek can't have it both ways. people don't want to send automatic telemetry and crash reports, but people don't want to go to the effort of manually sending logs...

i only send out crash reports for so long, then my system is so different and wierd, that sending it then wouldnt help anybody.
so generally i use that automated system for only the first month at most of a fresh install, which is like 1/100th of the total time.

3 hours later…
5:02 AM
everyones fading

in my eyes: racist

its not racist if they don't trust anyone.

people with multiple tablets, what's better for reading, screen size or resolution ?

@HackToHell ideally, you want high pixel pitch on as high a resolution as possible, on a 'better' display type
tbh, I'd just suggest a kindle for reading

5:16 AM
Yeah but mom wants one for youtube, so she pays half of the money :D
I pay the rest and we share the tablet
@JourneymanGeek pixel pitch ? that's a new term
googles

@HackToHell basically maximum resolution over as small a size possible ;p
so for equal size a higher resolution is better. For the same resolution a smaller size is better

@JourneymanGeek ah like PPI
Mi pad - 2048x1536 - 7.9 inch - 11k
Lenovo S8 - 1920 x 1200 - 8 inch - 9k
Both are kinda expensive, I was hoping for a 7k tablet
But price will probably drop in a quick sale or something
So I'll wait :D
Both are of a higher resolution than my laptop xD

heh
the mi pad looks like a 'better' option
tho, I'd warn their skins are somewhat odd. Very apple like

Yeah, MIUI is kinda weird
Still better than ZenUI I suppose

I try to stick to as close as stock android as possible

Bob
5:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ehhhh
For reading, I'd say the pixel density of 1920x1080 at 10" is more than acceptable.
Don't worry overly much about that.
Though, IMO 8" is rather small. It's in that awkward place where it's too large to be portable like a phone but too small to be comfortable browsing like a larger tablet/laptop.

@Bob Ah, If I go for a 7" tab, the highest resolution one I could find is 1280 x 600, is that okay for reading ?
@JourneymanGeek There's not a lot of tablets these days
I guess people don't get them as much now

@HackToHell and/or most people who want one have one ;p
so its more of a 'replace on failure' than a new market

Bob
@HackToHell It's... acceptable. Wouldn't be great for videos.

and blah
(still trying to work out the sensible option for getting a one plus thee)
@HackToHell I've read on 1024x800 at 7"
Its not terrible
but I kinda preferred my phone a lot of the time.

5:52 AM
Aha, so it's okay I suppose. Lemme check prices for a good tablet at 7"

Good morning!

Bob
@HackToHell Any reason you won't either go 10" or just use a phone?
7-8" really is right in the awkward zone.
Heck, if anything, 8" is better than 7...

@Bob phones suck for movies? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek So do 7-8" tablets

less so? maybe? ;p

5:58 AM
i like my phone for movies, adding in some descent sound. being close enough to somthing small , is just about as good as being far away from something big. then your eyesight goes , and being close enough doesnt work.
magnifying glass, carboard box and a bright phone, is a projector :-)
pico projector and a phone with MHL or Slim port?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Considering @HackToHell already has a phone, the options are spending ~$100-$200 on a 7-8" tablet with minimal value, maybe a bit more on a 10" tablet that's probably more useful, or just using the phone with no additional cost...
Personally, I like reading on my phone. At least for books, it's nice to have the narrow screen.

@Bob its for his mom tho

Bob
But a larger tablet would definitely be much better for movies than a smaller tablet.
@JourneymanGeek Does she not have a phone?

I donno, its @HackToHell's mom ;p

Bob

"In C# 6, you may define a default constructor that is called when new S() is invoked, but not when default(S) is used." - That feature was dropped in the end - because it caused too many headaches, from what I remember. (You can still do it in IL of course, and the situations in which it's invoked aren't always obvious...) — Jon Skeet 3 mins ago
oooh
Jon Skeet correcting Eric Lippert :P

wow the FAA (aviation admin) has now allowed kids to play with RC drones. what a country

@Bob shes does, it's a 4.5"
And that is too sucky for movies

Bob
@HackToHell If you feel 4.5" is too small, 7" honestly isn't all that much better...
Eh. Go into a local store and try one out.

under 55 lb drones, that go less than 100mph less than 400 feet up, but not a night/

6:26 AM
Just went out to do that, they don't have the tablet section charged :(
So yeah going back in the evening

Bob
...go to a different store

There's only one which has tablets out on display ...
small town
Actually there's another one but it's 20 mins away
So I'll go back in the evening :D

and the rest have simulated displays with cardboard cutouts of how it might (never does) look? and those of course Are plugged in :-)

@Bob I can't read for a long while in my 5.5" phone :S

Bob
Eh. It's a pain to search, or read articles, but a nicely-formatted book works well.

6:42 AM
Perhaps i use the wrong font/size
I should optimise my phone reading first

I tend to use larger fonts
but its cause I'm dyslexic

@JourneymanGeek oh what sizes?
This is on a 1080p 5.5"

@HackToHell on my PC, size 20. On my kindle, the 4th largest size I think

4th largest ?

yeah
It dosen't tell you what's the size
i.imgur.com/pr5Nnc9.png this is how I read on a PC

is it worth pushing a junior developer to add more detail to his commits?

I have a friend in the USA and she's managed to adopt a pet skunk!? To me that's just sounding odd
Yes @Burgi
It will ensure understanding of what their doing as well as being good practice.
When they have enough experience they can put lousy comments like the rest of us ha ha ha

7:39 AM
hehe

@Burgi somewhat. Tacit Knowledge (I know what I did and why) vs Explicit Knowledge

I'm struggling with my website. Do I need to do anything clever when setting up IIS8 and IPv6?

i've never had a minion before so its quite scary

I'm pointing a domain (AAAA) record via IPv6. But when I connect, it just says the site can't be reached.

have you set the bindings in IIS?

7:41 AM
@Burgi, for me, I'd ask for more but give him the time he needs (and help) so you can show him what to do . Then after a few times he can do it on his own.
@Burgi, yes, assuming that setting the binding for IPv4 is the same as IPv6

should be
you might want to traceroute the domain name to see where it messes up

this might be a better question for the main site, maybe?

Indeed, I know that the chatters here are pretty cool though :)

;)
The link I provided has a script to do that, but you can also manually rebuild it with 3 steps. 1: disable winmgmt service, 2. rename (backup) %windir%\system32\wbem folder 3. start winmgmt service. — Kevin Tu 5 hours ago
i am new guy for this forum, i didn't notice this is a aged thread. I have lots of material about WMI, and i have few years' of WMI supporting experience, so i just want to share something with the OP. So i need to delete my answer? — Kevin Tu 4 hours ago
@JourneymanGeek any recommendation on replies to those?

thats kinda cool youtu.be/IG2HANsvAxw?t=222 an android phone, hotspot and projector. that is "enough bright" and has sufficient reviews to assume it would work.

@Rahul2001 DO NOT WATCH THE SEQUEL!

8:01 AM
@Burgi tickets already booked... why?

@Burgi what sequel?
The same way there's only one Starship Troopers Movie
and George Lucas fell in a sinkhole right after return of the jedi was made, which is why the new trilogy took so long...

no? nor does it wear underwear, on the inside or outside.

@JourneymanGeek Hmm. How do you find them? Searching superuser.com/users doesn't seem to ...

@DavidPostill er. I happened to notice a few on my rounds? ;p

they've got a wrapper for mysql_real_escape_string

anyway, I've let the other mods know the user's an issue, deleted as needed, and if this person turns up again, now all y'all know.

all the classes are in the global namespace

@DavidPostill funny thing is if I found out using mod powers I can't tell you guys since it involves PII

Bob
PHP has namespaces?
Oh yea those things no one uses

9:12 AM
the new versions yes
i used them in my last job... :(
so yeah the namespace thing might be a legacy issue due to the age of the site
still annoying

@JourneymanGeek You missed one :)

Oh
pretty sure I nuked that

@JourneymanGeek Never mind. It's a review test :) My bad.

ah
Its POSSIBLE I missed it
but only cause someone else got to it first

vanishingly remote though

9:20 AM
@Burgi you'd be suprised.

this doesn't bode well for my OCD

On some days stuff like that gets handled by users really fast

@Burgi why shouldn't I watch the sequel?

@Rahul2001 reviews range from "I only watched this movie cause my employer paid me" to "Meh"

I think he means the dot + he's on mod vacation ;p

Bob
ah
makes more sense

@Rahul2001 bad script, retconning of the entire original invasion, bad acting, weak main characters, plot holes you can fly a planet sized ship through....

@Burgi the first movie wasn't exactly... logical either

and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much deus ex machina
@JourneymanGeek true but the casting and direction was much better

also, feels like they're trying to franchize it

9:27 AM
now that I have got that out of my system, i'll unpin this tab and be back later
see you folks!

I wouldn't mind if they turned it into a series ala sg1 ;p

that might work
it did feel like they were setting up a 3rd film

ahh... him. Never heard of him.

most politicians are terrible

they made him education secretary. all the teachers went on strike
they made him justice secretary. all the judges went on strike
