I am a wuss
I'm going to post an answer that might get flagged. As Aibobot ;p

@JourneymanGeek Hmm. Waiting ... ;)

A: What makes Kali Linux different from other Linux distros for it to be used exclusively for hacking and penetration testing?

Aibobot I have been asked to first start using Kali Linux and get used to the bash before doing anything in hacking. No. Just no. "Getting used to the bash" means you're lacking somewhat fundamental skills and knowledge in linux. Kali linux is a fairly focused distro designed for penetration testi...

@JourneymanGeek Good answer to a bad question :/

@DavidPostill signficantly more confrontational than the answers I post tho ;p

;p
It might be confrontational but it is spot on.

12:18 AM
It had to be posted. Just not as me ;p

I don't even think it's very confrontational. Honest is a better word.
Everybody will know it is you though if they look at the user profile ;)

yup
It is something that annoys me greatly

Guess I gotta get back to answering questions...

@bwDraco quite honestly that one is an answer that was waiting for a question ;p

I'm 100% willing to do something like this on my own account, even if I risk getting flagged.

12:27 AM
;p

No need for a sock or test account.
(You're a mod, so there are probably more stringent requirements, though. Won't want to get the SE team knocking...)

I can see no reason to flag it.

@bwDraco the sock account actually exists primarily so I can see things as a low rep user

My response:

A: What makes Kali Linux different from other Linux distros for it to be used exclusively for hacking and penetration testing?

Most of the same tools are available on other distributions; it's just that Kali comes with these tools out of the box and ready to go, and does n...

> Kali is designed for the security professional who knows what he/she is doing, and is not really aimed at beginning Linux users or everyday use as a normal Linux distribution.
That pretty much sums it up.
I've worked with Kali myself in a computer hacking course.
It's not the sort of distro you want to use as a normal OS, but as a tool for pen-testing.

yup
Its definately not a first distro
or a daily driver distro

A: Why did adding memory significantly increase gaming performance on an AMD APU?

bwDracoWhen you installed the second memory module, you enabled dual-channel mode and doubled memory bandwidth. @JourneymanGeek How's the toaster? :P

@Bob You need to get this on github ;p
Works great so far tho

@Bob How's the Owncloud

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Haven't really used it yet, but it seems to be running fine :P
@JourneymanGeek Well, you have the only copy of the source right now :P

Github has a bias against male coders.

I can put it somewhere you can grab it ;p

Bob
1:14 AM
@JourneymanGeek Maybe later tonight.
Or I can make the repo and you can push to it? :P
I did waste enough of your time...

I'm totally unfamiliar with git on windows ._.

Hi, I'm trying to auto-start a service (on linux) on startup. I'm currently on this website : geekflare.com/how-to-auto-start-services-on-boot-in-linux and it asks to Create or copy your script under /etc/init.d what script would the be talking about?
and I cannot find the chkconfig utility O.o
Would this be the right line to write? : update-rc.d postgresql start ?

@bob those instructions are shit
1. No one really uses classic init scripts any more
2. chkconfig might be distro specific. There's no mention to what distro he's using

bob
I read the new command is update-rc.d stackoverflow.com/questions/20680050/…

....
1. Linux is a kernel
2. What commands you use depend on your distro
3. Your init system depends on your distro and version

bob
Well, I am using mint and debian

mint would use upstart
maybe systemd
debian should probably be on classic init scripts

bob
1:54 AM
I will make my research, I will be back in a minute thank you very much =)

chkconfig is something you find on a red hat based system

bob
It says here adminsehow.com/2009/05/… that the command for debian is : update-rc.d postgresql defaults
Would that be right?

next question
why do you need to do that?
your postgres install includes init scripts

bob
Oh because I need postgresql whenever I start my computer and it bothers me to start it up each time

It should already be there if you installed it correctly

bob
1:57 AM
I would require to view the init script?
and maybe add the line?

No, quite literally
the postgres package includes that by default

bob
wierd...
Shall I remove and reinstall?

Do you have anything in postgres right now?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Debian Jessie is on systemd

I'd suggest dumping it to be safe, so you can restore, purge, reinstall and restore.
@Bob haven't touched debian in a while I guess

Bob
1:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek They went from sysvinit to systemd in 7.x => 8.x

bob
I'm new to this haha

@bob fundamentals

bob
well the whole linux os

Bob
There's now a Devuan fork that stuck with sysvinit.

You sound like you need to do LFS101 ;)

bob
2:00 AM
What is that?

(which is awesome if you are new)

bob
I really want to improve my skills with linux haha because I am not that great

bob
Ok, I will start the course thanks for the suggestion
oh, which one is better?

Bob
2:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...I thought that was directed at me :P
You had me confused for a bit there.
@bob They're the same thing.
edX is hosting the course.

Yeah. It's hosted by edX, but with material from the Linux Foundation.

Bob

@MichaelFrank that's a pretty common issue with VMs. Just get some NTP client to periodically sync the time?

@Bob If the guy has to go 100,000 light years away to get a date, he should be a bit less worried about the girls saying "not if you were the last man on earth" when some people have married a woman that said that to them once before :-)

@JourneymanGeek Ahh, makes sense.

@Bob I'm not answering very many questions ;p
Well technically you answered my last one, even if its by hacking together a solution ;p

Bob

@JourneymanGeek lol. the other guy already answered it, I just happened to be in the middle of an independent one and didn't feel like giving up -_-

@JourneymanGeek do you have a second?

@bob maybe

alright I have a server running with apache2 on a debian machine. Other devices on the network can access it using the debian's ip (192.168.1.16). I changed the content of index.php using (cp -a new_content index.php). Now we (other devices) do not have access to the server (you don't have permission to view this content)
I thought when we use -a, it keeps the permission and etc etc

Assuming the original contents had the right permissions
And well... this exactly is the sort of stuff that's fairly trivial to look up
and check

Hmm...
I'm seeing a whole lot more downvotes on SU than last year :\
Many of which look like decent questions at a glance.
And the downvotes with no accompanying comment.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ?

5:56 AM
the downvotes with no comment bit
But I suspect its just more questions + more users

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh... I have the sneaking suspicion it's just one or two people going around downvoting :S

(Even mods can't typically see votes)

Bob
Some of those questions are decent, IMO. Maybe needs a bit of polish, but commentless downvotes don't help polish.
@JourneymanGeek Ya, I know.

you know what would be good: when you downvote it automatically pops up a comment box. if you don't enter a comment it takes 3 rep off you but if you do enter a comment it only removes the normal 1 rep

but I might not want to post a comment
Or someone's posted the same comment I've posted

fair point

heh
I'm firing up another vm to test something

i was trying to think of a way round the issue of downvotes but no explaination to the author as to what is wrong

(trying to get an ISCSI target up cause, well I've never done it before)
Not much you can do
and I admittedly downvote without commenting. Or comment without downvoting.

9:47 AM
if a comment box popped up when you downvoted would you be more inclined to comment?

No?
I'd find it annoying and obnoxious ;p

would it make more sense for newer, less respected members of the community?

@Burgi Voting is anonymous. There is no obligation to comment - and there shouldn't be. This whole issue gets raised on meta.se almost every day and when it does gets massively downvoted.

maybe its me that is doing it wrong.
i don't downvote unless i can think of something constructive to say

I try to do that
But I occationally downvote when someone should know better and acts like he dosen't

probably on my questions/answers... ;)

@Burgi in most cases i feel the same way, I do not ever find it constructive to kick people when they are down, but without that it wouldnt be stack exchange :-)

10:18 AM
naw

Thousands of people have made constructive changes to thier stupid answers when told what the percieved flaw in the answer is. Thousands of people have also explained thier "thinking" (right or wrong) or explained better what they were trying to relay, when they knew what the problem was.

Oh, and stupid questions
And downvoting those is free

not as much can be done for stupid questions, because (after all) they are the ones asking for "help" not providing (cough) expert advices.
At those sites where they PAY people to help others, you dont see people spitting flames at the hands that feed them :-)
I downvoted your question, because it is stupid, so be sure to click on the Pay Me Button when my wonderous answer (i snagged off the web) fixes things for you.

i have a quick question on large campus sized networks...
how does it spread bandwidth to users?

2:00 PM
facepalm

@MichaelMitchell Opinion-based. We cannot answer that.

2:58 PM
@MichaelMitchell It depends entirely on the architecture of the network and the individual network appliances involved in the network.
There is no possible way to generalize how "the generic large campus-sized network distributes traffic across users".

@allquixotic Bandwidth! Not traffic.
Distributing bandwidth is ... well. The inverse of distributing traffic among users.

4:23 PM

@DavidPostill Do you think, "The cat spilled water all over the external connectors of my computer and I blue screened. What steps should I take to make sure nothing is faulty?"
Is on-topic for SU?
(This happened last night)

@Insane It seems a bit opinion based and maybe a bit broad but it might fly ;) You might want to add more info about the bsod. Have you tried turning it on yet? If not make sure everything is dry ;)

I dried off all I could externally, unplugged everything (and turned the PSU off), went to sleep, and now today everything seems to be fine. But I don't want to get caught off guard later down the road.
You think it's worth a shot asking for general guidance, someone could provide a canonical type answer?

So you have turned it on?
It would make a good question for a future canonical answer ;)

@DavidPostill Should it automatically load my dumps..? It's empty when I opened the program.

Hmm. I can't test as I don't have any dumps. Do you have anythin in C:\Windows\Minidump?
