Dog
1:04 AM
Well THAT was convoluted
Chrome won't allow you to copy user profiles between computers anymore because FUCK YOU GOOGLE.
So the only way to access data in an old profile, is to open the profile on the original machine it was created on.
Except that was my desktop. Which is in storage. And inoperative.
So to access ONE GODDAMN SIMPLE JAVASCRIPT FILE, Chrome has forced me to pull a drive out of my desktop, image the OS partition on to my laptop, upload the 30GB image file to my server, create a VHD image on a second server, mount the VHD from the second server over SMB on a third server, create an NFS share of the VHD for a fourth server, create a Xenserver VHD store using the NFS share on the fourth server, create a VHD on the NFS store on the VHD on an SMB share on a VHD, and decompress the OS image onto there.
2

@DavidPostill he walked into it
@Dog so... simple as a rube goldburg machine, and twice as fragile

Dog
Because Xenserver can't use SMB shares, only NFS shares. And Windows 10 can only create SMB shares, not NFS shares. And Windows 2012 can create NFS shares but not from SMB shares
@JourneymanGeek ten times as fragile
Any of the VM's so much as sneezes the entire virtual host will hang forever.

Dog
1:40 AM
All that just to get one bloody file
Thanks to that excellent performance it'll only take 3 FUCKING DAYS to copy the damn image
File => Disk image => NFS share => Disk image => SMB share => Disk

1:56 AM
@Dog does xen server do iscsi?

Firefox is much simpler. It's just a matter of copying the profile data. It'll work even across platforms, as long as the version of Firefox on the target machine is the same or newer (due to updates to the Places database schema).
I've done Firefox profile migrations across machines, even from Windows to Linux, without problems.

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Good point, yes it does. In fact it's the only other thing it does
(Actually it DOES support SMB but you have to pay for a license to enable it -_-)

@Dog there's a decent free iscsi server on Windows

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Yeah I just thought of that now that you mentioned iscsi
Erf
Interestingly I seem to have finally figured out this stupid annoying problem I've had with unmounting virtual disks in Xenserver
Basically if you have remote desktop client open in your VM, Xenserver hangs forever whenever it tries to unmount or remove a disk
The driver in Windows also hangs, as does the XAPI daemon so you can't shut down or reboot the vm either.
Why? Remote desktop hooks into the windows performance monitor API which opens a handle on every drive to monitor disk activity -_-
Stupidly enough, the windows remote desktop client is also what's been making "Safely remove hardware" never work on my desktop and laptop.
I have no idea which idiot at Microsoft thought it'd be a smart idea to silently lock all local drives for no reason whatsoever if you connect to a remote desktop server but whoever it was should go die in a giant violent fire.

1 hour later…
3:21 AM
@Dog what do I have to do to be granted the opportunity to watch you as you work like a bring your kids to work day thing except you dont have to explain anything Ill just watch? :o
hahahahaha Microsoft!
firefox keeps crashing because theres not enough RAM. I had just about enough of chkdsk so I inserted a control c into the command prompt though that didnt help. going to give it some time or maybe Ill get angry enough and just kill the process
OR Ill take out cheat engine and corrupt the process memory! mwuahahaha and risk corrupting the disk? CausingUnderflows do you really want to cause underflows on your own PC?

Bob
4:14 AM
s/not enough RAM/*someone* thought removing the page file was a good idea/

4:49 AM
@Bob 85 usd shipping...
yeah, kinda kills it

Bob
@JourneymanGeek :\

@Bob tbh other than the dells, I'm not averse to fleabaying or locally acquiring off brand monitors. Akira does 4k now and its not that pricy

Bob
@JourneymanGeek But IPS! :P

there's that
actually if I wanted another nice 4k display, its not that bad even with shipping

Bob
So... funny thing...
I need some wheat seeds (cover crop). Apparently they're supposed to be really easy to find at the 'organic foods' shops.
...I honestly have no idea where said shops are nearby.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek it's a rather hard thing to google -_-
@JourneymanGeek yea, was hoping for a physical shop

they seem to have a physical shop

Bob
though I do wonder how you found that - it's cheaper than any other place I've found O_O

"56 Coronation Pde Enfield NSW"

Bob
@JourneymanGeek funny thing about that... not something you normally have to worry about, but here there's a world of difference between having one, and having one nearby :P

4:56 AM
@Bob I might have taken a course in advanced puppy eyes search engine manipulation in the past

Bob
that one's actually not too bad - it's "only" 30 min drive one way

@Bob I donno sydney geography

Hi!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek "far"

30 minute drives for us is 'average' ;p

Bob
4:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek is it? o.O

@Bob shorter distances, but more traffic/more direct

Bob
I should probably just get it delivered :P
@JourneymanGeek That one's not so bad - the northern one is only 15 mins. Same as one of those organic thingo shops over in Crows Nest.

how much do you need ?
also, probably dosen't taste 'alf bad

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I have no idea!

Typical!

Bob
5:01 AM
We're just preparing to lay grass turf, and I wanted to keep the new soil from getting blown away :\

Bob
I think I'll just order from that petandgarden place :P
Funnily enough, it's cheaper cause it's not been labelled organic
not that I care

lol
Not like you're going to eat that ;p
and once its grown... yanno

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I wasn't planning to eat it anyway
just mix it back into the soil
though my mum might want to try wheatgrass, who knows

mom says 2kg per hectare
(I'm amused at the odd, random things that turn up)

Bob
5:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...she's done this before? o.O

@Bob my mom's a trained botanist
While she hasn't practiced in years, she's got some idea about these things

Bob
ah
thanks, though
1kg should be... more than enough
that's some 25,000 seeds apparently o.O
if the birds don't eat them all!

3 hours later…

1 hour later…
Bob
9:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek -_-

Bob
9:42 AM

Dog
9:58 AM
Fuck Google. Fuck Microsoft. Fuck citrix. Fuck them all.

heh, Such rage

Dog
@JourneymanGeek when you've been hours late for everything for a week, and constantly sleep deprived, cause it takes eight hours to do something as simple as copy your browser settings you'd be raging too.

Bob
10:18 AM
@DavidPostill I find that statement offensive.
(see, we can play this both ways if you want...)
@Dog *whistles innocently while using firefox sync* :P
tbf chrome has a sync option too... and perhaps it works better than ffsync, idk

@Bob <shrug>

Dog
@Bob yeah -_-
@Bob chrome sync sucks and also doesn't sync extension settings.

Bob
@Dog in ff extension settings really depend on the extension :\
and it's hard to make it selective if I don't want to sync settings to a specific device

Dog
Tbh the main thing is Firefox doesn't explicitly make it hard for you to copy your setting yourself.

Bob
> cleverer

Dog
10:25 AM
@Bob tabloid

Bob
uhm. honestly not sure if that was intentional.
@Dog I've never tried with chrome
used to copy my ff profile all the time

Dog
Chrome (not the underlying Chromium) deliberately blocks you from copying your profile now.

Bob
before setting up sync. which was mostly an attempt to retain history for a longer period

Dog
For no good reason other than to force you to use Google sync

Bob
@Dog how so? o.O

Bob
@Dog thanks. it's ridiculously hard to search for :\

I used to use this thing called mozbackup for backing up my firefox stuff

Bob
> I had tried Firefox but had a lot of problems because it kept claiming certification errors when going to gmail, and even other simple websites
lol.

Dog
@Bob yeah which all the more increases my rage.

Bob
Maybe look into why you're being served invalid certificates?!?!
Noooo, of course it's the browser's fault!

10:28 AM
ah. Its dead

Dog
@JourneymanGeek yeah, can't do that with chrome anymore, Google blocked it
@Bob lol. Probably had a wrong date on his PC

@Dog just use the built in chrome account sync?

Dog
@JourneymanGeek it doesn't sync extension settings
The thing I need right now is a script I wrote in greasemonkey/tampermonkey

Bob
@Dog Nah, since Chrome apparently worked and the guy mentioned an employer, I bet it's DPI on a corp firewall.
Chrome using system certs and Firefox using its own cert stores tends to cause the different behaviour.
:D
My problem is I don't want some userscripts on some machines :\

Dog
Nice formatting there Chrome
@Bob Yeah I'm switching to Firefox again I think

Bob
10:34 AM
@Dog lol, that happens to me on FF with reddit.compact and lists
@Dog heh. word of warning that ffsync isn't the most reliable thing
but it usually works fine
unless you leave a machine off for a while... then it can take a really long time and bring back old addons that you deleted :\
no idea how chrome handles it

Q: Is it possible to synchronize userscripts between Google Chrome installations?

Anderson GreenI've noticed that userscripts aren't automatically synchronized like (regular) extensions in Google Chrome. Is there any way to ensure that userscripts are synchronized between Chrome installations?

Tampermonkey will only sync external scripts — ElephantHunter Jun 19 '14 at 19:40
...whoops?

Dog
Yeah, hence my rage.
> Chrome is an incomplete browser that relies on all sorts of OS bits to properly function.
Lol

11:10 AM
OS bits ...

Daily Mail math fail:
"In a group of 366 people, there's 100 per cent probability that two people will have the same birthday because there are only 365 days in a year, excluding leap year."

Well they got that bit right, but:
"Conversely, with just two people the chances of them sharing a birthday is 99.7 per cent.

With three people, the odds decrease just barely to 99.18 per cent."

???
2 people in a room have a 99.7% change of having the same birthday?

eww daily mail
7k rep away from my 100k
I really need to try to answer questions over the weekend ;)

1:55 PM
@JourneymanGeek Erm 100k surely. You are as bad as the Daily Mail ;)

@DavidPostill "Errata: The Journeyman Geek is 7000 rep away from 100K, not 10K. The lackey responsible for this has been punished in a suitable manner"

Interestingly enough the source from where the Daily Mail plagiarised it's article (Washington Post) got it right:

"So the probability that two people do not share the same birthday is 365/365 x 364/365.

That equals about 99.7 percent -- meaning that, with just two people, it's very likely neither will have the same birthday. "
Note the addition of that small word not

Bob
@DavidPostill s/people/fewer people/?
oh, neither
I don't math well at 1am
or any other time, come to think of it

I don't math well. I'm a dog

I do math well enough to spot blindingly obvious errors ;p

Bob

Dog
I have catted
Grr it's 2016, how does a PS2 touchpad driver still manage to constantly bluescreen the latest Windows 10

the driver sucks?

2:58 PM
it's 2016 and people are still crying about windows failing to do stuff?!
Will they never learn?!

@Bob I stopped it and it was trying to read 10 different files at once, no wonder it was stuck at a single progress point for 4 days
@Dog oh I'll take you down @Dog !!!!!!!!

Bob
Meh. You were warned, several times, about not running chkdsk on a physically failing disk.
I'm just waiting for your disk to crap out entirely from the repeated reads of damaged areas.
If you're lucky, that *might* not happen. *shrug*

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere if yer ain't gonna listen, ye ain't got the other left ta complain ;p
@Dog I could cuss in 5 languages
But I choose not to ;p

3:18 PM
I didn't know that the playstation 2 had a touchpad driver. Super user joke!!
well @Bob only one way to find out.. I'll run chkdsk again and if it finds NEW bad sectors on the way to file 49060 , your and my dream will have come true the drive is falling apart and sincerely it is unfixable and sincerely I dont have to try to make it bootable again!

Bob
sigh

@Bob tbh I think he's just trolling you

in the mean time, I'm going to download a windows 10 ISO ... and interrupt chkdsk if it seems fine and try to run some fix boot stuff or a repair
look basically I have this hard drive from someone who decided to stop communicating

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh, I got videos to watch.

my mom is like just give back the hard drive in person, say it cant be fixed. I'm like.. well that might not be entirely true, I hate leaving people in the cold

3:22 PM
;p

Bob
Speaking of videos, I'm also open to suggestions of more videos :P

I need to go to sleep in a bit
I donno. My youtube list is wierd ;p

@Bob don't listen to @JourneymanGeek I am not trolling you.

@Bob I'm seriously eyeing a razer blade stealth
might get one if the whole new job thing works out

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh, mine's probably weirder :P

3:24 PM
next week's my last at the place under the boat

Bob
If you're happy to share but not publicly, Steam?

lol
more like
no idea what would interest you

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Is that more of a yay than aww? :P

most of them seem to be machinists and stuff ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That's good, cause I have no idea too! :P

3:25 PM
@Bob kinda
if the new job pans out

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Laptop, yea?

tested's stuff is usually good though longform
@Bob their 'base' 12 inch model

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hm, wasn't that the mythbusters offshoot?

@Bob vaguely
basically 2 other guys started it, Jamie and Adam got involved, one of the founders left, adam's kinda the main guy
the park bench (matt grey and tom scott) is amusing pop sci too

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hm, kinda disappointing they don't have 1080p, though I suppose you could just double it on 4k

3:28 PM
@Bob my brother has the 4k model

Bob
(DPI scaling is decent in Win10, but sometimes native is still better...)

I think the QHD model at 12 inches is what I'd go for

(then passing this one to dad once I get a new battery)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek How much?
ugh, chroma gimicks
hm, they're all 8 GB RAM
TBH that's a bit disappointing. DDR3, too...

3:31 PM
The model I was looking at is 1660, 16gb for all but the 128gb model

Bob
Huh.That's not on their site :P
Heh. Thing looks pretty decent.

Download Windows 10
Update now

We noticed you are running Windows 10. If you are looking to update to the latest version, click Update now.

if I get the new training + placement thing I was discussing, I'm probably springing for it

you guys hate me dont you

3:39 PM
@Bob it does
tho I'm probably not getting a core
I'm convinced there will be cheaper options and unlike some, mobile gaming dosen't really appeal to me
Also, my brother has one, and likes it enough that he's eying the 17 inch model ._.

Journeyman here wants me to have a shortened lifespan, I am Bob's pet peeve for not having a page file,

Dog
