DavidPostill does a huge amount of reviewing every day, more than I do
I'm a flag specialist more than anything else
Hopefully, I can get back onto the review queues soon
Most of the time, I monitor the front page and the 10K new answers to old questions list and flag bad posts as they appear

@Bob uhh yea screw the pooch , just isn't the same as having intercourse with the dog :-) I hope they made that perfectally clear . messing up your operating system so it does not boot, could be called Screwed the Pooch. a Fender bender in a parking lot , getting to work late because you ran out of gas.
it is used more like "screwed up" the pooch, and as far as i know has never had anything to do with a sexual feat.

Dual Titan X and i7-5960X fairly similar to the Lucifer build proposed a while back.
No indication the CPU is overclocked, which could mean a substantial bottleneck.
That may why the 2160p FPS numbers are significantly lower than expected.
Nonetheless, this calls into question whether a quad-SLI TITAN X build would achieve the intended performance targets 3–5 years down the line.
The extremely low noise and temperature levels reported almost certainly confirm that the CPU isn't overclocked. Even a liquid-cooling system would see a substantial increase in temperature if the CPU was operating at 4 GHz rather than 3.3 GHz.

what bugs me most with games and frame rate issues is never the "average" frame rate or the "max" frame rate, it is only about when it hits the "min" when it chokes in certian places or during certian actions. like right in the middle of a life and death struggle.
I have almost learned to completly ignore tha big numbers and only observe any min shown because of that.
just about as usefull is the user assessment, it balks , or whatever words they will use to describe a miserable playing.
If the motherboard shows up as having stiupid pickey stuff occuring to users, no ammount of 2 day reviews doing one thing will be very usefull either.

Bob
looking into history is so much fun
> However, unless email is freed from dependence on the networks, I predict it will be supplanted by telefax for most uses in spite of its many advantages over telefax.
> a Japanese industry estimate is that 5 percent of homes will have telefax by 1995 and 50 percent by 2010. This is with a $200 target price.

okaay what is telefax?

Bob
@Psycogeek fax
> Eventually, there will be optical fiber to every home or office supplied by the telephone companies.
HA HA HA HA GOOD JOKE
...no
!!no
More like, I really wish that would happen, but noooope.
> The same transmission facilities will serve telephone, picturephone, telefax, electronic mail, telnet, file transfer, computer utilities, access to the Library of Congress, the ``National Jukebox'' and maybe even a national video jukebox.
hm.

oh fax , I always hated that, soo poorly done , in most of the machines, and most people using it paid no atttention to any proper details or alignment or anything.
Video telephones are finnaly a usable thing, yet nobody still would own one. just messes up the answering the phone comming out of the shower thing. and Video Cell phone calls could have been something, but still (seems) to be fully abhorred by the phone company.
I think anytime the phone company might actually be required to do Anything other than collect money, it just doesnt work out.
Wrong people in the wrong places? Programmers love to do the "lookie mom what i can do" as they add half operational features to things. they should instead be doing the "services" then the jackasses that do the services , we will have them in charge of programming instead. " well is it fully operational before we Charge people Out the ass for it?"

@Psycogeek I want to star that (on mobile)
oh shit 2002 was 13 years ago

I have never really concidered e-mail to have a huge dependance on the servers, i see them more like a in-between, the voicemail box that i empty most of the time. Then we start doing this web-mail kind of thing, and it is the users who thrive on the server dependance?
If every users normal computer was instead a full server (or just was regular for in and out), i suspect that the security kinds of things would be extrapolated thousands of time over.

Bob
@Psycogeek email has lots of retransmit redundancies
but, yea, the protocol describes communication
mailbox storage varies by implementation

7:48 AM
And his plan would be that we would communicate without a central corporation, and direct to eachother, but the same basic communications? So if that had advanced beyond "fax" it would be most like Texting?
Texting seems a bit similar in that your "calling" the persons number and sending data to them, but once again anything but directally. . . ahh crap, direct nothing :-)

8:08 AM
@Bob I'm pretty sure that PhantomJS's memory leak is hitting up against the lxc memory hard limit of the Cavil container and causing it to terminate. I should set up that cron job again to restart it every 12-24 hours or so :P
I set a pretty conservative limit of max ram on that container specifically to avoid it taking over the system with its memleak

@JourneymanGeek that was my first thought too :P

The fastest, most reliable WiFi no bufferring, no skipping, no nothing. So says the add, and it works exactally as designed i get No Nothing :-) no buffering and no skipping. it simply does not make it to the inside of my faraday cage.
It really ticks me off too that they raised my price and added this wonderfull wi-fi service out there , i know damn well i am paying for. and it works when the phone or tablet is held against the window.
Then it also disconnects every 2 minutes like clockwork. there was a question about that once on SU, and i would like to know WTF they were thinking when they set it up like that.

10:53 AM
While all other tech is speeding up and costing less, i just researched my ISP cable monopoly , to downgrade to my original price. They would give me a 3mb/s connection for that same price almost 10 times slower than what I started with :-(
Thier economy packages are 2 times dial-up costs and barely faster

11:14 AM
IF we set-up the worlds first Open Net relay system, where each person runs a repeater and 20 mile directional antenna , that would only leave the minor problem of all data daily travelling through 2 criminals computers for each cross country hop. that is 2 less criminals than the 4 government agencies which seem to have trouble following the law..

Q: Google Chrome Randomly Downloading itself

rah2153I'm not normally a Chrome user. I use IE11 on a business laptop, running Win7-32bit. Lately, Google Chrome is been downloading itself and changing all my IE shortcuts to use Chrome instead of IE. I will be working on something and a Chrome internet window will pop-up, out of the blue. I then go l...

#rd user seeing chrome as malware :-)

Bob
If it was installed without permission, it is malware.
Probably not Google-official.

The landlord tried to simply update Flash today, from the proper source, and Chrome and google toolbar came in as malware, he claims there was no way to stop it.

Bob
@Psycogeek You need to uncheck the boxes.
It also tries to install Mcafee.
This kind of bullshit...

That is what i tried to tell him to always use "advanced" and "custom" options when installing anything nowdays.

Bob
Honestly, I already didn't like some of the things Chrome was doing, but anything that tries to install itself in this fashion instantly earns a place in the "stay the fuck away from" category.
I don't care how good or bad said software is. As soon as you resort to this kind of tactic, you're bad.

12:57 PM
Yea that is just it, I may have been happy to install and use it, even pay for it if i desired, but not like that.

Bob
I remember first seeing it several years ago.
(Speaking of which, I also wasn't too happy with how Firefox's default search engine changed. But I can forgive them for that because it's a setting within their software, not an additional program that overrides other parts of my system.)
So far, Java and Flash bundle programs. Ask, Mcafee and Chrome are the bundled programs.
I'm forced to use three out of five of them.

"Adobe offsets the ongoing development costs of Flash Player, which is made available for free, by offering users these options" Uhh what? i thought you were getting a load of money for the "pro" software you charge to people who want to create flash ?
Flash Professional CC
Interactive animation, game and mobile app design.
$19.99/mo
so i guess 240$ a year from 10,000 creators, doesnt pay for anything.
or for $960 a year you get the whole kit, including stock parts and pieces you will never use . And people say subscription fees and online software isn't wonderfull. . . for the investors :-)
Only a few years ago $960 would get you the whole kit too, which a person could use for 10 years or so, or they could bump in another $300 a year for upgrades.
If somehow there was some huge magical change , that people really Needed, i can see that. but people for the most part just want to read the freaking text and look at the freaking video. and of course play the simple flash game.
I do not recall users asking adobe to Add to the flash program to become a whole subsystem programming language with full takeover ability of thier computers. sooo if you worked to try and make flash a OS , that is your problem.
(and your security issues)
Those are "clean updates".
They're posted hundreds of times all over these forums.
Bookmark them.
STOP using the updater UI
He did not use the updater, and years later (after all the other complaints) he basically got the same crap that all the other people complained about.

1:46 PM
His computer is so contrived and controlled and shut off, that he has never actually got a virus, even though he has no idea what to do. so I could say that in his case, the almighty Google and the wonderous adobe were the only virus he has had in like 10+ years.

Q: How to stop Google Chrome to be installed on my Computer?

Wyll Gonroni have found that i had a adware installed on my Windows 8.1 PC that keep installing either Opera or Chrome, i managed to remove it so never mind that, but Chrome keep being installed every one hour of season (which means: for every hour that i use the PC), so what i want is to prevent Chrome to ...

Lol , chrome in malware, like what is next a Apple fans standing outside PC stores, demanding you try a Mac :-)

Hi folks I have a problem that I'm stumped by
I have a funtoo/gentoo system
I would like to use the nvidia proprietary driver
but I would like a framebuffer for the TTYs too
is this possible?
I am using I am booting via UEFI

Bob
o.O

Ell
AFACT a lot of the framebuffer drivers are incompatible with the nvidia driver :/

3:20 PM
@Ell somebody went all creative trying to fix that ? bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=194245

Ell
Hmm it appears to modify the BIOS
but I am booting EFI style
or does that mean the BIOS of the card or what? o.O
It appears to require uvesafb which indeed is BIOS only :/

I barely have any idea wtf anyone is saying, but got there based on this trail of broken ttys :-) askubuntu.com/questions/508635/… & unix.stackexchange.com/questions/157111/… & forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8839
plus this bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=192530 which indicated it might not be All propriatray drivers which have such problems. and asking people in the kown What driver to use , might be something ?

Ell
thanks I'll check these out in time :)
cheers!

@Ell the video cards bios i assumed, messing with the place it is stored in ram, which makes it a non permement?

anyone want to suggest a 50c item I can buy from Amazon?
> Add-on Items ship with orders that contain $25 of items shipped by Amazon. Your Cart currently contains $24.57 of items shipped by Amazon.

Your thinking about it all wrong :-) it is more like what can i get for $5-10 that still ships from amazon, that will be basically free while trying to avoid shipping costs. (and paying that out anyway)

that printer ink/toner or paper your going to need someday anyway? batteries or media like cheap flashcards? wires? that 4k monitor you been wanting :-)

it what? superuser.com/questions/942065/… In this question they point direct to a microsoft page , that states "Every GPT disk must contain an MSR" But I certannly have more than one GPT disk array, and see no such thing? Microsoft is never wrong, so why has nothing ever shown the existance of this ?
In the statement reguarding the user not seeing it "The ESP, OEM-specific, and other unrecognized partitions will be visible only in the Disk Management MMC snap-in since they will not have a recognizable file system." It seems to inidicate that I should be able to see it in disk management?

11:21 PM
Diskpart shows nothing like that either, although I do not really know how to show everything command in diskpart.
Oh there it is, sneaky little sucker :-)
That is not too smart keeping that out of the GUI view, I might have done something really stupid . . . again.
