12:31 AM
@Ramhound: kinda borderline but I'd probably not be inclined to move it.

12:47 AM
@Bob Isn't it morning for you?

Bob
@MichaelFrank ya, I'm apparently nocturnal now

lol
She does have a point tho
That much smoke means you arn't burning efficientlyu

2 hours later…
3:05 AM
@MichaelFrank superuser.com/questions/909410/… it is 1 second after the latest letter was typed, or until it no longer matches, where it default beeps.
If you delay by one second, the next letter typed will start a new search.

any multi-monitor os x users out there?

Not directly ;p
I very vaguely support them

heh I connect my macbook to a few different external display setups and was just appreciating the fact that os x notes your arrangement per monitor
can't remember how long ago they added better external display support I'm wondering if that was added then

ahh. I'm useless then ;p

. . . tapping the ESC key also begins a new search

3:12 AM
@JourneymanGeek no problem, just curious ;)
what does vaguely support entail exactly?

(I'm sort of the resident windows guy with a side of linux. In a linux/mac shop ;p)
And our macs (and other systems) are set up identically, so... there's little intervention by us unless shit breaks.

ah okay, nice
it's been a while since I've had a reliable desk setup for my laptop at home but I finally got that squared away plus a desktop monitor mount

My primary system at work is an old beast of a workstation ;p

@Psycogeek Update the answer then ;P

@JourneymanGeek I take it you wouldn't be aware of how os x determines which screen to display the command-tab app list on?
or does that fall under vague support? ;)

3:21 AM
Nope
Vague support. Not use ;p

ahh, didn't realize you chose your words carefully
you'd think when I click on a display and subsequently command-tab it'd show up on that display

think again

(also, least when I was new here, my dislike of macs was well known. ;p)

3:23 AM
have you tempered your distaste since then?

@Qcom Probably not, they still suck. :V

D:

Oh, I've learnt to live with it, and let others suffer ;)

the only complaint I have is the gratuitous hardware prices

I'd probably pick up a mac mini if there were 100-200 dollars cheaper.
That and I actually have too much spare hardware at the moment.

3:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek I have so much spare hardware

but for someone who effectively does all personal and professional work with a single machine I appreciate apple's build quality

@Qcom Until your MBP charger breaks cause of the poor cable design and you're left having to fork out $130 for a replacement. ;p

don't remind me of their cable prices...
is that how you treat new people around here @MichaelFrank? hehe
I wanted to purchase an extra charger cable until I noted the prices then pretended I never looked it up

@Qcom: One official and one unofficial machines at work, 3 at home.
I have er... 3-4 spare boxen at home too ;p

well I do have a spare pi so maybe count me as having two machines

3:31 AM
Work - one workstation and a personal netbook (eventually for when we lose direct internet access). At home, laptop, desktop and a NUC as a server/linux desktop.
2 old laptops (core 2), a early atom mini itx in a normal desktop case, and a PIV mini ITX/space heater.
oh, and a pi, which used to be where I put my backups.

you just introduced me to NUCs shows you how much I know ;)

Well, I have the gigabyte equivalent - a brix.

and if anyone else has an aversion to bees don't image search nucs

next unit of computing. They're probably the best option for a small, low cost, quiet home server/HTPC box these days.

At home I have; Laptop, Macbook, All-in-One Touchscreen, Gaming PC #1, Gaming PC #2, Home Server, HTPC, 2x eeePC
plus a bunch of random workstations and 1U servers that aren't doing much.

3:37 AM
a second gaming pc for when the first one is busy loading a match?

Or have company ;p

@JourneymanGeek Yea, pretty much.

what a host, built in lan support

oh. And the shared box. Currently inactive but gaming capable, vaguely

@Qcom I have this idea for a suitcase that is basically a LAN in a box. You turn up, plug it in and everyone just jacks in to the convenient ports on the side. Instant network!

3:53 AM
I'll take two ;)
what are your games of choice @MichaelFrank?

@Qcom: naturally. Tho in my case its cause I got fed up with people getting me kicked off the desktop.

@Qcom Right now I'm pretty much only playing Destiny on PS4.

ahh nice, since bloodborne came out I've finally been excited to use my ps4

and damn, I could SO use a few of those at work

3:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek Those are some serious mobile servers.

There's times when we need more render boxen.

@Qcom Yea, I have a very short attention span for PC gaming now... and a very loooooooooong list of Steam games.
I often sit there, staring at the list until I eventually get up and turn the PS4 on.

lol. I don't really have anything that grabs my attention at the moment. Waiting for GTA to cheapen out a bit, or maybe arkham.

the only pc games I play are those indie games that run well enough on my macbook hehe

Most recently I played a lot of Eve Online... but then I had to go back to work after 2 1/2 months off work.

4:02 AM
so meatboy, sword and sworcery, etc.
I've never tried eve but I like its premise how have you enjoyed it?

SU site now acting all funkey , tossing Error 502 everyonce in a while
now back to really speedy

@Qcom I really like it. But it does take a lot of time up.
My advice? Join a newbie friendly corp after finishing the tutorial missions. They're generally very generous with ships and you really only learn the game by exploding.

One of the best experiences I ever had was making the run from our home system to the "Eve Gate" which was over 40 system jumps away.

@MichaelFrank exploding or exploring ? :-)

4:13 AM
@Psycogeek exploding.
But generally Exploring leads to exploding when you're new. So both?

but I dont want to die, i hate when that happens.

@Psycogeek was wondering that too haha
@MichaelFrank thanks for the advice

@Psycogeek EVE is not for you.

and perhaps not the souls series either

Ugh... Those Mace Knights at Heide's Tower? No thanks.

4:16 AM
ahh you're in the know
bloodborne has spoiled my love for dark souls 1 and 2 a bit

Really? I watched a couple hours of Man vs Game while he played Bloodborne... It didn't look all that different.

it definitely isn't in principle but even though it's 30 fps the speed of play is far greater than in souls
the health regeneration mechanic plus the fact that actions take far less stamina also allow for more aggressive (i.e. sloppy) play styles

@Qcom That's probably a side-effect of the no shields system though.

true, that too

4:27 AM
Anyway, home time!

4:39 AM

Q: Source path too long - BUT IT NEVER USED TO BE

SE505I am getting the following error while trying to copy backed up data from my external hard drive to my desktop: The source filename(s) are longer than is supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming them to shorter name(s) before at...

Desktop? From an external drive to your desktop, WELL there is your problem! and here I thought you said you like Organised :-(
The desktop should be reserved for rouge program icons that dont know how to behave, and viruses :-)
(and that temporary thing, that you know should be in a nice clean accessable folder anyways)

4:59 AM
rouge? ;p
and he might be meaning a desktop PC as oppoed to a PC desktop. Them tags tho.

your right, but it does figure that he is copying to something with its own path

2 hours later…

Perspective Apple: We'll sell you a gold-plated watch for $10,000. Tesla: We'll sell you a battery that will change the world for $3,500.

Microsoft is silently preparing your PC for Windows 10 (not very silent it is an Optional update) "have discovered that the update is actually a notifier and installer for the Windows 10 update, thus allowing for the nagging to upgrade to begin as soon as the new OS becomes commercially available." from unreliable site theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2402948/…
The update can cause a few minor issues besides being a legit sales tool. Could be I (myself) am reaching EOLU for windows 7. End of life of updates, as they start stuffing the old os with updates that are "not made exactally for it, but are tailored to work with it" Sorry no better way to say "accidentally can mess stuff up", pushing you into the new system.
Hey microsoft your updates that are really for 8.1 screw up my _______ , what you going to do about it?
MS: Laugh

7:20 AM
from netmarketshare.com/… If it is as good as the site stats web pages, then it is probably all wrong.

7:32 AM
yay, paperwhite should reach the transhipper tommorrow. If my wallet does too, I can get it all sent over

7:58 AM
Sweet. Seems like that document scanner is up for sale again

the last buyer couldnt afford the shipping?
or the whole thing was being shill bid, and the shill accidentally ended it
brother sells 3-1 B/W toner printer units with low quantity scanner paper feeders, new for about $150 in the US
Probably stuff about 24pages in, 36 of them thin ones
The homeowner has that one, even though i can sneak off a print to it via the local net. He thinks it is fine. It is ok now that it is new with fresh gripping rollers. he Paid around $125-150

8:29 AM
Would be good deal? Elements and Elements premiere included.

Elements is baitware, completly sufficient for any regular consumer to do work in it, but entirely inadequite when trying to do anything "special" with it, or requiring much control of everything.
Element baitware packages , can often be updated , for less than the cost of the whole real package. Sort of weird, but it is one way that you do not lose much , when you find that elements is to elementry.
Because elements is simpler, with less manuel and mind numbing features, it is a lot easier to get started and used to thier (crappy) programs, before having to update and live with this training forever.

2 hours later…
10:08 AM
@Psycogeek I currently use Paint.NET
Would it make sense to buy Elements? I see many designers use Photoshop and offer project files .PSD which I am still able to open with Paint.NET but I wonder about support...
Currently I need Adobe Lightroom for photo enhancement and Photoshop for better PSD support.

Check the price for upgrading from elements to full on the adobee site. most times you can buy or get elements for free (with some hardware) then update it to full , for less than the cost of a full package (minus a student package). . . . because it is bait , much like if you signed on to get spammed by some seller , you see the "deals" as they come out.
If you are going to really get into photo processing, or getting paid for it, there Will be some missing stuff in Elements that you must have , even if you do not need it today. They specifically pull features to create the crippled package for that purpose.
As far as lightroom, i have never needed it, photoshop has every feature that anyone would require for photo filtering and manipulation. I have processed over 20K pictures and never required it.
(adobee is not a charity :-) you should see thier buildings, and in one of the most expencive places for property/real estate, someone pays for that. (other than me)

10:29 AM
@Psycogeek I thought Elements are about photo organizing and editing but Lightroom for processing?
You used Elements for photo processing and found it equal to Lightroom?

Sure, it can be that way.
Elements = Crippled package , that is cheaper, and does most stuff , Applies to all crippled adobee packages.
Photshop = Really for original creation , and will do every filtering and photo manipulation needed
Lightroom = Added piece of junk that does some of the same processing that photoshop does, but not really designed for original creation

You think Lightroom can complement Elements?

Lightroom could compliment photoshop, but totally unnessisary. Elements just means crippled.

@Psycogeek You think this guy uses Elements? fiverr.com/ajb_graphics/…
He offers .PSD and I wonder if I should really consider Elements to work on existing projects and photo processing. Plus get compatibility as we both work with Adobe software.
I do not really create designs from scratch but edit delivered projects. Elements, texts, sizes, enlarging - downsizing etc.

Maybe I should consider Elements to be on same with level designers?

Wacks boris upside head (bonk) He could use photoshop, or gimp 2, or he could use corel , or the other 3 top photo programs. But if he learned photoshop, then he is doomed to continue using it. If it is the "elements" version, then someday he will be upgrading.

10:40 AM
Can Elements do photo processing like this guy offers? fiverr.com/dcoufal/…

If it is object oriented work, vector grafics , i think that would be done more in illustrator.

@Psycogeek Are banners considered object oriented vectors?
If designer designed me logo and sent me .AI file, can I plug it in Elements for editing or will have to get Illustrator?

Simple processing without , re-painting and clone painting , and texts can be done in XnView and it is 10X faster for some filtering.
@Boris_yo yes banner type things, and large texts, and cartoonish elements is more towards vector grafics. but even a strict vector artist will still have a photo filtering program.
@Boris_yo adobee files go round and round between the programs, for the most part. Perfect example is WTF opening of a PDF in photoshop.

@Psycogeek I am looking for easier solution than XnView. This was done by a guy who lacked good lighting:
This was after processing:

But remember that elements is Crippled packages, designed to force you into upgrading to the full package, sooo when you start to "need" then you gonna bleed $$$
@Boris_yo XnView 10seconds

10:46 AM
I assume in XnView I will have to install plugins and learn thing to do what he did but why not just do it in Elements in 2 seconds?
@Psycogeek No plugin installs?
@Psycogeek I think crippled package of Elements 13 and Premier is worth $45...

@Boris_yo That is right you can even stuff adobee plugs into xnview, but I never bother. The real work of simple filtering is all about filter matrixes, "Math High On Pixels" Those filter items are in loads of things, because they have been around for 20 years.
@Boris_yo wacks boris upside head again. The package is Photoshop elements (crippled) and Premiere elements , "elements" is not one of the programs. It is still photoshop

Seems like Adobe does not offer good help and this guy is not aware of tutorials that are supposed to exist for PE?

"Just Say NO!

This is a real horrid program. If you have a pro who can teach you it may be OK but trying to learn on your own with only their "Help" is as worthless as all other "Help" options you've ever attempted to use. I want to do some of the most basic, minimal adjustments, no layers or anything fancy and it's completely worthless. I've tried multiple times over the last couple years but it never has worked for me.
@Psycogeek You mean Elements and Elements Premiere are 2-in-1?

It really does have a large learning curve. corel programs seem simpler, MSes premium photo program is very nice, and is very simple
<--- hopes that the hangover your going to have in the morning was worth it :-)

@Psycogeek It's afternoon here.

Once you go through the hell of learning how to use adobee programs, then it begins to look easy. it never was, but now your stuck.
That is why if your a student you can buy these programs very cheaply, once you learn them, you will likely be using them and paying for them again and again.
If it is the money that your worried about, and you have not used Photshop before. then get your hands on the (psudo) free photoshop package, and start using it. it is only crippled in that it is 32bit (access to huge memory).
that package is only a 340Meg download, it comes direct from adobee, includes bridge and (i think) lightroom. just no support, and (thank god) no more horrid activation garbage.

11:15 AM
@Psycogeek Does it have Adobe Camera RAW?

it Has some sort of "Raw" opening capability called "photoshop raw"

@Psycogeek Does package have name to search for on Adobe.com?

Raw really isnt that special, seeing that BMPs themselves can be fully uncompressed all the colors all the pixels, and even 16bit per color. It was an added "standard" when we already had 45 others, but it is just that another standard that (in this case) has all the data still.
When it gets to really specialy file items, it is usually the propriatary program file saves that are barely compatable between versions of them.
Trying to stuff into the file all the data , plus all the ways it is assembled, masked, layered, and all that stuff. that is where compatability is just generally, programatically difficult.
Free photoshop is around this link adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/… But it is not really free , it just has been made free :-) but the idea still is that you once had purchaced it.

11:31 AM
Note to self: add more than a single SSH key to your user account on a fresh server :P

@Psycogeek Is "technical problems with servers" their excuse to ditch support for old version or they speak truth?

@Boris_yo did you have a problem with the server ? or is it not available in your country? It may very well be english only. can you work all in english?
Ohh, yea, dropping the server support, and activations garbage, and giving up on it, was because it was a PITA, I was a PITA :-)
gizmodo.com/5973730/… see ender89s comments (in the comments) for a full install problems guide. Which also indicates that installing it on windows 8 may not work at all (without VM)

11:52 AM
@Psycogeek And you really don't know if one day they will come after you to get their pie if they discover you did commercial work with it...

@Boris_yo I have a real actual licence for it. As for anybody else, it is still baitware, you cannot use it to get upgraded to CS7 or whatever it is this week, and people always have to have the latest stuff, so they will eventually buy.
I wonder how it looks on a 4K screen running in the full res. i would bet the text and icons are way too small and do not size up .
If it doesnt work in win8 without a VM, then again they will be buying someday. Death Taxes, Google ads and paying adobee , all just part of life.

12:32 PM
@Psycogeek I am still on W7 Enterprise. I noticed I started getting a lot less updates as support is critical updates only now. I will be getting W8 but only with new laptop...

1:13 PM
Is there anyway to make textbooks more readable in my laptop
specifically I want the text to fill the entire horizondal width of my screen
Instead of it just filling the vertical places

Fit width?
I know Sumatra does that.

How do I do that ?

with the fit width button? all the PDF readers have it

Ahhh
That only zooms in

Put the laptop in portrait mode :-)
Even if you could subpixel font smoothing doesnt work, when the pixels are the other way.

1:39 PM
Made it into an epub
Format is a bit off
But I can read :)

Describe what you were going for? or how the epub improves this? I know that reading a PDF vs a book always seems off (not just right).

nope , looks like sumo does not have a side-by-side mode?
that pic i.stack.imgur.com/GJKsN.png the one you removed ? looks more book like.

@Psycogeek that's epub
Side by side mode in pdf desn't pack enough text

sumo in fit width + 1
I actually do not like the TOC to be there either. But thats ok cause i only look at the pictures anyways.

1:56 PM
It's harder to get the flow of the text when I am zoomed in
I don't like it
I want the whole page or none at all ;D

Ahhh , so isnt it really all about the stupid oversized margins?
how they obviously waste billions of trees of paper :-) by using the default margin setup , creating vast useless white spaces.

2:27 PM

Bob
2:38 PM
@allquixotic How did that end up going?
Because Beats and Apple can go die in a fire => theverge.com/2015/5/4/8540935/apple-labels-spotify-streaming
> Apple has been using its considerable power in the music industry to stop the music labels from renewing Spotify’s license to stream music through its free tier.
> its own streaming service, which is widely expected to feature a considerable amount of exclusive content
> Sources also indicated that Apple offered to pay YouTube’s music licensing fee to Universal Music Group if the label stopped allowing its songs on YouTube.
Nope. Not touching that shit with a ten foot pole.

But will you visit them in prison?

@Bob I used it until the 30-day trial expired, then stopped using it. It has the same limited collection that all the "woodwork" streaming services have. Spotify is a significant cut above those.
(woodwork streaming services, per my definition, are the umpteen different streaming services that came late to market, long after Spotify was popular)
it's like the music cartels have the "standard package" of a couple million songs they sell to any Joe Blow CEO who wants a new streaming service, then they have the much-enhanced package with lots of individual deals, etc. for Spotify
@Bob at least I never paid them anything... and their streaming app, like all music apps, still cuts out occasionally on BT on my Note 4 :/
Hey, at least the iPhone 6 never drops out over bluetooth (I've never heard anyone complain about it, anyway). Can't say the same about the past 4 Android smartphones I've owned.

Bob
@allquixotic Uh, no.

""Payola has come to mean the payment of a bribe in commerce and in law to say or do a certain thing against the rules of law, but more specifically a commercial bribe. "" & ""Payola is no longer the local DJ receiving a couple dollars for airplay; it is now an organized corporate crime that supports the lack of balanced content and demeaning imagery with no consequences""

Bob
> The Bluetooth on the phone is ridiculous, it cuts in and out, drops calls and I feel makes driving unsafe.
> Some people have found that a temporary fix for the problem is to log out of iCloud, forget all connected Bluetooth devices, resetting all settings, then restarting their iPhone, repairing via Bluetooth and logging back into iCloud.
O_O

2:51 PM
@Bob ah, okay... my bad

Bob
@allquixotic Well, they at least seem like they might be trying (and failing..) to fix it in firmware updates. No idea what the Android side is doing.

I am trying to download a bunch of images but I cannot use things like Downloadthemall, as the files root folder (/shared) is blocked, so you have to go each sub-file individually to access them. They are all named in a recursive manner though, so is there some tool/way to get all these files using a recursive grab? i.e. shared/images/image_headers/23_0.jpg, shared/images/image_headers/24_0.jpg, shared/images/image_headers/25_0.jpg.

@Bob Android makes little tweaks to Bluedroid every release, but they seem to alter the character of the problem, rather than fixing it.
With 5.0.1, the sudden loud "shotgun" pops I was getting are gone completely, but I still get fairly regular "dropouts" lasting <1sec, and occasionally the audio stream experiences what I can only describe as what happens to a carrot when a master chef chops it up as fast as he can
like, a dropout every 5 ms, then audio for 5-10 ms, then dropout for another 5 ms, repeat for 2-3 seconds

@Austin script it + wget?
or better yet, generate a list of files and use wget on it

Bob
@allquixotic I think I actually get that sometimes on 4.3 with a wired headset.

3:03 PM
@Bob I have never had wired heatset problems -- definitely not since ~4.2, possibly yes before that

4:02 PM
Wow
I installed the C/C++ plugin for NetBeans and it detects my MinGW-w64 installation immediately

@DragonLord on Windows? (I have to ask, since you can actually install MinGW64 on GNU/Linux)

On Windows 8.1.

is it in PATH?

Yes, it is

that's why ;p

4:07 PM
I'm going to manually add in mingw32-make

Bob
Huh, the cooling on this lappy is really well designed.

Yay, I have a TV again :D

Bob
Pushed the CPU to 99 degrees, and the fan got quite loud and the palmrest got a bit warm :P
now I'm trying to bring it back down to idle temps... this is taking quite a while
hm, not sure if the keyboard is stuffing up or if I'm just missing a lot of keys o.O
or, more likely, the EC monitoring program... apparently accessing EC introduces a lot of interrupt latency

4:26 PM
@Bob WebStorm is pretty nice for node.js debugging, the VS combo you specified is great, but I am kinda used to IntelliJ shortcuts

2 hours later…
6:39 PM
It bugs me that the Homegroup icon will randomly show up on the Windows desktop now and then. Just happened today. Had to do that hacky fix someone posted on this site, where you uncheck and then recheck some checkbox option in Folder Options.
I wonder why this happens.
@Bob My old Lenovo Thinkpad had amazing cooling. It barely got warm. My new laptop also has great cooling but the heat shielding means I can still feel it get somewhat warm. It's not terribly uncomfortable though. It pushes heat out very efficiently.
@CanadianLuke Any further status?
@JourneymanGeek Woof! :P

7:01 PM
@Ben nope!

@CanadianLuke Well let me know! My friend is also wondering. :)

No problem. I was busy with cadets all weekend, so I was barely home

@CanadianLuke I understand. :) We all have busy lives :P

Yup
I'm gonna try it at work, with SAMBA 3
Error: Could not find or load main class directoryReader.jar

Did you pass the -jar option?
Or just list the file?
java -jar directoryReader.jar -D remote_directory

7:22 PM
I live dangerously... Without any -jar switches :P
It's running

:P May take a while depending on how many items there will be, as I said

@BenRichards my (mom's; but I bought it originally) T530 gets pretty hot :P

@allquixotic Weird. My old Lenovo Thinkpad Edge runs AMD, so it certainly will generate heat. I just can't feel it on my lap :P
