this question asks for a hardware recommendation on SU. Migrate to Hardware Recommendations?

@BilfredKerman We don't migrate to betas, and we don't migrate questions that would not stand up on the target site. Just VTC->Off Topic->HW Recommendation (not the site)

@JourneymanGeek What is it? [at work]

@Bob: er... shitty windows XP tablet.
Marries a AMD geode based board with a badly made powerboard, and a ton of taped together AA batteries for power.

Bob
o.O

Can't fix a macro error? Rebuild the entire workstation. Job done!

@JourneymanGeek Oh God...
That looks like something made for a school project
The board at 3:15? I've seen people solder better on their first try

Bob

@Bob pls cen hev ubnut tuch on mah note
:p
Stupid Verizon and its lockdowns
@Bob Wait, I'm stupid. That's Android. Derp
Too used to being on AU

@Bob is that the G4?

Bob
Yep

2:06 AM
@Bob so the battery doesn't seem that bad
At least, it seems to last longer than my Note when it's off :p
Hope @NathanOsman makes his userscript available on all SE chatrooms

Bob
Yea, standby is great. Problem is SOT for me :P

hmm
What do you have brightness set to?

Bob
But I don't know if any phone does better without a giant battery
I have it on auto these days

@Bob without a giant battery?
Oh wait, I see
OK
To be fair, the Note 4 has 3,220 mAh

Bob
2:18 AM
Was in direct sunlight earlier

I got that letter ^

Oh dear

@allquixotic That doesn't sound fun at all. :/

Bob
Oh, was your background investigation stolen? Here, have some identity monitoring!
Only three years too.
That sucks.

well at least I get a free Tri-Bureau Credit Report
those are fucking expensive if you want one normally

2:28 AM
@Bob 5% drain while on, 10% while off?

Bob
@Zacharee1 only because I wasn't using it much this morning

But the screen uses battery when it's off?

Bob
Oh, no, that measurement is overall usage while screen is on/off

oh, ok
lol

Bob
@allquixotic o.O

2:43 AM
@allquixotic wtf

1 hour later…
3:51 AM
@HackToHell the United States' credit monitoring agencies, TransUnion, Equifax and Experian, have a lot of data (provided to them by banks and other companies that give people lines of credit or bank accounts) on every US citizen, which can be used to help combat identity theft. However, there's a drawback. They won't lift a finger unless you pay them a substantial amount of money to help you.
They are for profit entities

That sucks bad

5:18 AM
Aaaand a memory leak

Origin isn't working as intended? How preposterous!

i don't think it's cause of origin, rammap shows a high kernel stack

oh, it's WUDFHost that's leaking
wait no. what am I even looking at

No patience to debug

Anyone here have an Android tablet with a 1080p or better screen and live in a country with access to Amazon Video?

Bob
@allquixotic Nope and nope :(
Well, the tablet part is more of a :\
Did your cable arrive?

Nah not yet
Also that mediatek processor struggles mightily in its valiant effort to play the ultra high end card game, Hearthstone
It takes an age to load but eventually it does barely play
The same game that loads in a fraction of the time at better quality on a higher resolution screen on my iPhone
And probably with less energy usage considering how efficient the 16nm A9 is

Bob
@allquixotic MTK? I thought it was Qualcomm.
@allquixotic What are you trying to test?
> They [the keys] need to be the same for both encryption and decryption.
...well duh
(context is AES)

Fire HD 10 is MTK. Trying to see if Android devices can download Amazon video in at least 720p or whether they are stuck on SD
I THINK Amazon's app may limit you to SD only downloading on non-Amazon phones and tablets
Cryptopals looks interesting. I'll have to try it some time.

Bob
7:03 AM
@allquixotic does it have to be a tablet?

Hmm. My hunch is their app treats tablets and phones differently, so I'd prefer a tablet, since I have access to a phone I can do testing with.

Hello, can someone help me. I have a Mac that has a 750GB drive but the MacOS partition only has 100GB. Disk utility does not show the entire disk but the mac partition only. I am fixing this computer right now I've no idea what the previous owner did.

how is the rest of the disk partitioned?

@AlexSu a screenshot of disk utility might be shiny.

Hi all to post the screenshot I've raised a question, screenshot in link

Q: Lost partition/disk on Mac OSX

Alex SuHello all I have a Mac that has this weird problem. It's a used Mac and I've no idea what the previous owner did. This Mac has a 750GB drive but the OSX partition only has 100GB. Disk utility doesn't recognize the entire disk so there's no way for me to resize the OSX parition. All I want is to p...

:(
Its all in chinese.
I understand chinese even less than I understand macs.

lol
k, let me try to change the system's language

10:19 AM
(windows/linux user mostly)

I will update the screenshot once I get this freaking old computer to reboot in the right language

:-D

alright
screenshot updated
thanks guys
ive spent days trying to figure out the problems
with no avail...

I wonder if you could use a bootable ubuntu image and try to format the remaining 650GB from there
if you have a usb lying around you could make it into a bootable drive, put a linux distro on it and see if you could access the remaining disk space

i will ty
but to my limited knowledge it is extremely hard to get a ubuntu dongle to boot from Mac, unless it is from a CD

10:30 AM
hm

i remember seeing people discussing about this online

it seems like Apple dislike the idea of booting into another OS from a usb

yeah even that article says Mac tends to prefer a CD over USB

my colleague just happen to have a bootable ubuntu usb, i will ask him once he is back from lunch break

10:32 AM
hm.
!!xkcd mac usb

bah.

according to previous owner, he somehow tried to install windows onto his mac
and ended up like this

oh dear
yeah, windows and mac dual boot... isn't really easy to pull off

@AlexSu is there anything on the drive you need?

10:35 AM
oh shit. gotta go to lunch before the place stops serving ->

Off hand you could create an install USB (or even internet boot) and just blow the old drive away.

no, i dont need anything
i tried to blow the old drive away during OSX recovery
but that stupid disk utility doesnt recognize the entire drive

i can only blow away that 100GB partition

Do you have a OS X install media?
Maybe blow away the whole drive with maybe a linux livecd?
(I'm guessing here)

10:39 AM
all Mac comes with recovery data, I could boot into the recovery data and initiate the re-installation process with no problem
the problem is with the partition
linux live CD might help
but it will take me some time to secure one
plus i've no idea if you could reformat the drive in a way that OSX would recognize it
i thought they used different partition scheme?

11:13 AM
I have never worked with SQL Server on this machine
It seems excessive, but okay

@AlexSu the idea would be to remove all the partitions, then install off of some other device

11:41 AM
@AlexSu - Booting/installing from USB might depend on what Mac it is. Machines that shipped with a SuperDrive are difficult to boot from USB. If you can't get Internet Recovery to play nice & completely nuke the partitions, you may be in for some CoreStorage surgery. More on that if you reach that point, or search out posts by klanomath in Ask Different He's the resident CoreStorage genius.
One advantage of Internet Recovery is it has a stripped down Safari in it, so you're not stuck with no Google

@OliverSalzburg I love how they installed 2012 after 2014.

How do you describe yourself to potential employers? Many developers get this terribly wrong.

And it came back to life o_o

@Leathe I just fixed a typo in the title. The rest of it is just too unclear to fix :/
So I flagged it "unclear" ;)

@JourneymanGeek lol

I think my second monitor's got a bad cap

Q: How do I enable touchscreen in bochs?

Sagar KI wanted my android tablet to work like a surface pro (using an x86 emulator, of course). I have done all the preparations, installed windows 8.1 on my c.img file, but, I just couldn't work out one thing. I wanted to enable touchscreen, or else the screen works like some sort of trackpad of a la...

Are android tablet questions on-topic? Is this a grey area?

well, they're not specifically said to be off-topic
then again, he is talking about bosch, which is a software for emulating a PC
if you removed the fact that it's an android tablet, the answer given should still be the same

12:29 PM
@Leathe Android is off-topic ...

imo that question still falls under software
of course android specific questions should go to Android Enthusiasts

The space race is on bitches \m/

About damn time

It is, however, important to clear up the difference between "space" and "orbit", as described well by https://what-if.xkcd.com/58/
Elon Musk is like we doing a harder thing, so you still suck orbital science :D

1:22 PM
@HackToHell they did manage to land it. Also that looks oddly phallic.
That said, SpaceX does 4K videos. ;p

1:43 PM
@JourneymanGeek Ha, true enough, I though I was being immature. Talk about a space D

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It looks like one of my more basic KSP constructs

Bob
2:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek Recognise this? :P

lol, google just pointed me to this, guess who wrote the answer to it ;p superuser.com/questions/684795/easiest-way-to-backup-vps

I don't remember that at all!

@Bob no. Tho that's a common style of bollard here.

Not really my sorta area. ;p

Your face has a bad cap
My face

@qasdfdsaq heh, or a lose power cable. Its been running fine for a bit again

2:38 PM
Ooo, didnt realize there was a SuperUser chat
Anyone willing to answer some questions I have about BIOS vs UEFI under a windows OS?

>_>
grumbles about chat not getting enough love

Bob
@KDecker Sure.

lol

So I have been having issues trying to install Win7 on a new PC I built
UEFI based motherboard
(Sorry I need to explain some background)

@JourneymanGeek if chat got more love, it would be as busy as javascript chat on chat.SO, which would be bad
imagine 1000 Recycle Bins

2:41 PM
I created a bootable USB with Rufus which gave me two options "USB" and "UEFI" boot. I can easily boot to the USB option and enter the windows 7 setup, though I cann enter to the setup via the UEFI option

sure, we'd have 10 Bobs and 3 JourneymanGeeks and 20 allquixotices, but we'd also have 1000 Recycle Bins

Bob
@allquixotic We need more JourneymanGeeks (JourneymenGeek?)

yes, yes we do
*cue 10 separate people replying with ";p"*

I guess my question is, why did Rufus create two boot options "USB" and "UEFI" and why can't my UEFI motehrboard boot into the UEFI option? I assume this is because windows 7 cannot boot to UEFI?

Bob
@KDecker Well, that assumption is wrong :P
Hm. Desktop machine? 64-bit Windows?

2:43 PM
Yeah desktop 64 bit

Bob
Just wanna rule out 32-bit firmware (or OS) incompatibility first. 64-bit Windows does not like the 32-bit firmware on cheap tablets...

@allquixotic one of me would probably wear out my mouse suspending them
@KDecker do you have CSM turned on?

what are you trying to do with Rufus?

CSM? Compatability Support Managment...?

da. AKA 'oldschool' boot iirc.

2:44 PM
@allquixotic I am trying to install Win7 onto a NVMe drive ...

Bob
@KDecker Compatibility Support Module. Often labelled as "BIOS support" or "Legacy Boot" in the firmware settings.

Here wait I made a forum post with the entire issue.

Bob
@KDecker Ohhhh boy.

@KDecker does win7 even support NVMe?
(probably not)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Not natively.
There's drivers for it but I'm not sure you can boot from it.

2:44 PM
No it doesn't.. You have to install a driver in the setup
Which I also am having issues with.

Bob
Anyway, that shouldn't affect booting from the flash drive.

@KDecker CSM is a component of most good UEFI implementations that basically exposes an interface like the old pre-UEFI BIOS to operating systems

Bob
I've not used Rufus before, though. Still doing optical media installs :P

@KDecker you probably don't want to use it (but you should) but does windows 10 work?
rufus works fine on windows 7,8 and 10, tho my windows 7 installs have been on oldschool bioses

Here is the entire problem I am having tomshardware.com/answers/id-2871768/…

Bob
2:46 PM
@KDecker When you say it doesn't work, what exactly are the symptoms?

I'd say if Windows 10 installs, use it and don't ask questions... if you don't like the UI, install Classic Shell or Start10... I wouldn't bother with Windows 7 at this point unless you have some kind of a business mandate to use it

Bob
What happens when you try to boot from it?

@allquixotic @KDecker also rules out rufus being at fault

Bob
I'm assuming you've gone to the boot menu and selected the removable disk from there?

@Bob Yes Win8 and above from what I can tell should work out of the box

2:47 PM
hm. Does windows 7 do UEFI boots?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yes.

Its kinda on the border, and I assume so...

Bob
Vista did too, IIRC.

@Bob I can boot from the "USB" option but not the "UEFI". If I select the "UEFI" option in the boot override I am taken isntantly back to the UEFI on the MOBO.

Also, certain buggy UEFI implementations (especially older ones and/or laptops) have issues booting UEFI from any removable drives; there are quite a few UEFI impls I've used that can only boot UEFI from a local, fixed disk

Bob
2:47 PM
@KDecker Can you provide a photo of the boot options?
@allquixotic OVH? LOL

@Bob Not at this time, currently at work

@Bob and, surprisingly, my Haswell NUC.

Bob
@allquixotic Does that include booting from actual single-partition removable devices, or just removable devices with an ESP?

the best UEFI impl I've used so far was on the Lenovo T530 (Ivy Bridge) - the configuration utility looks like it's from 1985, but functionality-wise it's spot-on

Bob
@KDecker I'd like to see what exactly the USB and UEFI options say.

2:49 PM
@KDecker What's wrong with creating a real question on SU? You will get many more eyeballs on the question. There's only 10 or so regulars on this chat ...

@Bob ESP on a removable device, I believe
@DavidPostill actually I'd say this is a terrible candidate for an actual question

@Bob Will you be on later tonight (Im in EST)

Bob
@KDecker ...I'm AEST. It's almost 2 AM here :P

@DavidPostill I have but the question is so large it doesnt really make sense. Its also much easier to do back anf fourth in a chat.

many problems abound if he were to ask a Q: first, he doesn't really know what he's doing, so he's likely to get terminology wrong and confuse potential answerers. secondly, many people have no idea about UEFI, so they will give misleading information without knowing it. third, this kind of problem requires a lot of back and forth
^

Bob
2:50 PM
@allquixotic Yup, generally back-and-forth troubleshooting questions aren't a good fit for Q&A

Oh, I think it might be a question/answer once we've bashed it out

@Bob lol what about 9AM your time lol? Thats 6pm for me

Bob
@KDecker Also, do you know what firmware version you're running?

Bob is nocturnal
you might find him around at 8 or 9pm EST

Bob
=> asrock.com/mb/Intel/X99%20Extreme4/?cat=Download&os=BIOS no updates relating to boot, but there are a few NVMe support updates you might want to have anyway

2:52 PM
I won't be here after work (I'm also EST) because I have an event to run in SWTOR

Bob
@KDecker I'll be at work then, so I'll probably drop by. But there's lots of other active people here.
And if you ping me I'll see it anyway.

@Bob thats what I was going to do later tonight. Try to update the firmware. I forget my exact version but IIRC it is much lower than what is current

(also, chat is semi asyncronous. If you know exactly who and what to ask, ping em, just not too often)
@KDecker update all the things!

Bob
@allquixotic Yea, that seems like a rare-ish use-case. But a single-partition removable device is the de facto standard installation method now.

!! s/not //

2:53 PM
@allquixotic (also, chat is semi asyncronous. If you know exactly who and what to ask, ping em, just too often) (source)

Yeah another option I was having is that the MOBO does not recognize the M.2 card
It sees it as a boot option

!!should we ping Bob incessantly at 4 and 5 AM his time?

@allquixotic All signs point to yes

but when I view the M.2 slot is says No Device Installed

Bob
2:53 PM
O_O

It's settled, then

Bob
Bad bot!
swats with newspaper

@allquixotic o_0

Ok Thank you all very much! This has been kind of helpful, though again I do not know the terminology very well.
So my question are a little off.

Bob
@KDecker That could just refer to the lack of an ESP. Or your firmware version could be old enough that NVMe isn't supported at all.

2:54 PM
But I will try to update all the firmware I can and try again.

We aim to kind of please ;-)

What is ESP?

Bob
@KDecker EFI System Partition. Basically the boot partition with UEFI.

Ahh

2:55 PM
there's also different flavours of M.2

Cherry, Vanilla, Chocolate, 'Red', ....

Best to check if yours actually does the PCI style one rather than just the sata one.

@Bob in my User Manual for the MOBO it only lists 1 Samsung M.2 that is "supported" on the site it lists 2 more but none are my model

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That's what NVMe is (as opposed to AHCI), innit?

@Bob: NVMe is a protocol

2:56 PM
@allquixotic Your face is a terrible candidate for an actual question

I got the Samsung 950 Pro NVMe uses PCI 3.0 x4

M2 is a physical specification with varients that are purely sata

Bob
@KDecker Wait, you're the one that posted this question? :P

@allquixotic o_0

Ok I have to go guys. I will be on later tonight if youre willing to help!
and yes ^

Bob
2:57 PM
@JourneymanGeek Ya, I'm saying "PCI style one" is NVMe. Or is it? shrug never dealt with M.2 before.

Ohh @Bob you responded to it! I didnt even realize that!
Ok bye guys
Thanks again

ooh... shiny... 950 Pro... do want... but I don't have an NVMe mobo yet, so that'll have to wait

Bob
I have entirely too much experience with UEFI on servers, though. Far more than I want.

@JourneymanGeek An NVMe drive shouldn't fit in an M.2 slot that is purely SATA
@allquixotic I do I do! I have multiple NVMe+SATAe+RAID ports all over but nothing to put in them :(

@qasdfdsaq shows how little I know

Bob
2:59 PM
Oh wait they do AHCI over PCIe too. ookay.
