12:00 AM
Oh
Do you have any good answers worth voting for?
Wait all your answers are good and worth voting for

That's 2 days running at 190. My epic badge is not getting any closer :/

Dammit 1 minute late

@qasdfdsaq Too late

If only you hadn't distracted me with the rapist.com

12:26 AM
Ugh... works web filters are going to have a field day with this chat. -_-

12:38 AM
Sex?
Is it because of all the unencrypted sex?

@MichaelFrank You wouldn't want that done by a mere hobbyist

Shivers
Cold cold cold cold cold!
Time to get up, drink water, take ubuprofen and turn up the heating.

I got a cold too. I'm not sick often but when I am, I'm as sick as a dog

@MichaelFrank Trolling succeeded! (And just in case it was not: I moved off XP after win7 came out. I am just upgrading familes laptops when I talk about XP).
Week 2 of this cold.
I almost did not have it for a full week.
As in: Tired. Some sneezing. Nothing more.
Then 4 days ago it struck hard.

I just had a bowl of hot noodles (with tabasco and jalapeno)

@JourneymanGeek I have a tube of Xtra Kickin' Jalapeno Cheese Pringles. :D

12:59 AM
I ate 4 buns today with thick slices of sausage and lots of rocket.
Tomorrow however might involve making chickensoup.
Probably simply, but I never did that before. Time to google for recipies.
Otherwise I will just take chicken, onion and thyme
Oh, vcarrots. I got some large carrots. Those will be used.

Dammit I miss noodles

@Hennes Better make a stock!

can't get decent noodles anywhere near here :(

@qasdfdsaq fairprice.com.sg/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/… this is my sick day noodles
else I get the plain vegitarian stuff, drain it, and do stuff with it.

Mm
I should just import some since I cant buy good stuff locally :(

1:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek who uses cc's to measure a bowl? o.O

Also, wauzer approved.

I use my eye.
pour pour pour.... OK, just about enough.

@JourneymanGeek That your dog?

I prefer to use a kettle.
@qasdfdsaq Its arguable if that's my dog, but yes.
(the dog/human dynamic is wierd with snauzers. Sometimes they have pet humans ;p)
But yes, that's the journeyman geek dog.
(and no, we don't give him human food all the time, except for cheese. Sometimes he's like "that smells gooood" and gives us the sad eyes o doom)

Right, back to sleep after I washed my feet ot get them warm.

1:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek Eh, they say the same about cats

"In a surprising turn of events, the American Medical Association (AMA) announced Tuesday that it will begin advocating for a federal ban of consumer-directed advertising for pharmaceutical drugs and other medical devices " medicaldaily.com/… which seems to have become the primary income for televsion :-)

@qasdfdsaq common (incorrect) wisdom is that dogs are pack animals and humans need to be dominant. We work out fine with a slightly bossy dog who knows when to agree with the human.

Now one has to wonder if they want to ban the falseness of it, or are tired of informaing the patients of all the Horrible side effects, where they will really hear about them. Because the law as it stands now, requires them to spend 1/2 the ad telling how they will also kill you.

@JourneymanGeek Intersting
Yeah I've always been told dogs need to get bossed around and cats boss people around

@qasdfdsaq with dumber dogs yes

1:58 AM
People also say cats are intelligent but I find them utterly stupid

Different sorts of intellegent.
Most cats couldn't give a shit

@qasdfdsaq hungry cats suddenly become much smarter.

Some dogs are trainable. Really smart dogs are semi independent.

Cute? yes. Intelligent? IMO no.
Sure they're good at digging out food. But that's about it

Bob
@allquixotic :)
Just going through emails now

2:00 AM
@qasdfdsaq define intelligent?

Having the faintest clue what's going on around them

My dog wouldn't do say, agility trials. Mine however knows exactly what he wants, and does his best to let us know what that is
lol
my dog's at the door 3-5 minutes before I get home.

Basic conditioning, yes. Complex associations not so much
Our cats are like... hear door. Run to door.
Sit in front of door until it opens.
Never mind understanding door only opens at certain times of day, it's just sit there until it opens. Meaow occasionally.
Never mind their ability to handle novel objects is restricted to this flow chart:
Sniff => Is it food? => Yes => Eat it
                   No => Attack it

else sleep on it

Is it box? Sit on it

2:06 AM
@qasdfdsaq other than that I don't have a regular schedule, and when the dog's sitting at the door, I'm roughly 25 floors down.
Also he was teed off when we washed his rug and it wasn't in his usual place.

We have two people (previously 3) in the house so we'd watch the cats sit at the door when someone downstairs opened it
IMO cats are basicall just autistic

People say cats can be intelligent but the most intelligent things I've seen them do can all be explained by just plain old classical conditioning

2:20 AM
That made me nearly spit out my lunch

2:32 AM
yeah, not the sharpest knives in the drawer

@JourneymanGeek Yeah I saw that one the other day. So desperate to do it to my own cats but haven't foudn the right kind of tape yet
Full version goes on for a minute or two longer

When my dog has something he can't remove he paws it then gives you the look
Had my dad remove a thorn the other day, the poor thing

At least they can ask for help
Cats just ignore it and bleed all over the floor
They seem good at removing bandages though

heh
My dog's good about that
and we've never used the E collar on him

I'm not a dog
Why are you comparing me to a dog?
STOP COMPARING ME TO A DOG! :'(

2:50 AM
anyway, I wasn't
Also, I need to remember to pick up conformal bandages at some point
they seem awesome since they only stick to themselves, but thankfully I've never needed them yet.

3:03 AM
Woof?
Woof woof woof woof woof?

arf
and lol
I was comparing dogs to cats
Even if it was a little unfair

3:23 AM
woof.

1 hour later…
4:51 AM
@Psycogeek gone.

5:10 AM
superuser.com/questions/1002118/… candidate for migration?

"you might want to try initialising those values" :-|)

._.
that's what the errors say ;p

1 hour later…
6:40 AM
True or false? Windows 8-10 does not do "Extra large sized icons" Big view thumbnails properly?

6:57 AM
Hey

False? They seem proper enough ;P

@Elizabeth thanks, so it is just that one user.

@Psycogeek No problem. I think it might be a settings problem.
@Celeritas Hi?
Doing some planning and finding a host for dedicated server. What might be some security factors I should keep in mind?
@davidpostill @bob Thanks for all your help 2 days ago on the router issue. Got caught up in work and didn't go try your solutions till today. Anyhow, all seem fine. I guess it was just a crazy peak time. Thanks again! Learnt a lot.

Bob
7:15 AM
@Elizabeth Good to hear.
@Elizabeth Security? Really depends what you're doing and how sensitive it is.
At the end of the day, you need to trust your host won't do anything dodgy.
Also, if you care about protection from government, you might want to locate it outside the US, for example -- but then the question of which country is "safe"(er) comes up.
For most everyday things? Doesn't matter as much.
The rest of getting a dedi basically comes down to price, reliability (how good the hardware is), support (uptime, response times for issues, etc.), etc..
Oh, and location will affect latency. More important for game servers, voice chat servers, etc., but will also affect things like remote desktop and SSH. Could also potentially limit transfer speeds to your location, and cause unacceptable delays if you're setting up a VPN.
Reeeaaallly depends on what you want to use it for... closer to you (or whoever the primary user is) is almost always better, but can cost more depending on where you are too.

Tell the truth bob your first host provided by someone else is like buying your First House, it was a former meth lab, when it rains a rivers runs through it, termites are eating through the floors, and a strange smell of dead bodies is comming from the attic. On Your Next purchace though , you know what to look for.

Bob
@Psycogeek lol, true. but like buying your first house, it helps to ask people who have already experienced it :P

@Bob Wow. You're amazing bob. Such detailed response.
@Psycogeek That's what I'm afraid of so I wanted to ask the expert community.

Bob
At some point you develop a bit of a feel for how a host is.
Reading customer reviews definitely helps.

Now, to describe what I am trying to accomplish here ... I first want to ask is it okay if I go a bit into programming here... I'm asking so I don't offend anyone.

Bob
7:23 AM
@Elizabeth For security, it always comes down to your requirements and how much you're willing to pay for it. There is no such thing as 100% secure, and it's really hard to say if some given host is going to snoop on your traffic.
However, as a general idea, it's somewhat less likely for a bigger host - if they have many TBs of data going through they're less likely to care about one user. But they might also do some big data aggregation and logging (NSA-style) - you can never really know for sure.
@Elizabeth Sure, shoot.

@Bob Haha. Okay, here goes. I am planning to develop my first web app.
Now, with the limited experience I have currently I am debating on hosting with a host, building my own servers or using the cloud vs cdn

Bob
Ahhh.
@Elizabeth Ok, you basically have four "classes" of hosting available.

Right.

Bob
At the cheapest, lowest-capacity, least-work and most-potentially-dodgy, you have shared hosting.
That's where they run the webserver for you. You have almost no control over it.

That is what I might not be so fond of. No control, Security issues... etc.
Speed.

Bob
7:28 AM
You usually get some kind of control panel. You can upload files, and some dynamic content using whatever language/framework they support (PHP, ASP.NET, Python, etc.)

Bandwidth. Traffic.

Bob
It's the easiest way to get started, but it usually doesn't scale.
Slightly above that, are the VPSes. They're still relatively cheap, and you get full control over the VM. The host still might oversell the server capacity, with some contention between different VPSes. You need to do all the webserver management yourself.

The question is all current startups I see now .. hardly uses standard hostings anymore. All going into the cloud and cdn. It seems like all these hosting companies are really for the small / med business sites I tend to design for once in a while.

Bob
Then you have dedicated servers, and "cloud" hosts.

Like using AWS.

Bob
7:29 AM
A "cloud" host is basically a VPS provider, generally providing transparent failover across machines if a physical machine goes down, and they usually make it fairly easy to spin up a new VPS, often auto-loading an image, etc.
Very scalable.
A dedicated physical machine obviously gives you the most control, but you sacrifice the redundancy of a "cloud" host. It's harder to take backups, and you need to worry about things like your HDDs failing.
@Elizabeth Shared hosting is... well, there's been a bit of a movement away from it of late.
The software provided is often out of date, the hosts rarely support any significant traffic, etc.
Cheap VPSes work for some small personal site, but of course especially on the cheaper end your uptime isn't really guaranteed.

Isn't a "cloud" more vulnerable to hackers ... and other security exploits?

Bob
Physical dedi is cheapest if you need a lot of power (CPU, RAM, storage space) but you need to manage your own backups and redundancy.
@Elizabeth Eh... really debatable. Depends how the infrastructure is set up.

Hmm ... now I see the pros and cons of each hosting option a bit more clear. Anyhow, due to this I seem to have obtained even more debate between each other. Observing that a tremendous migration of startups are transitioning from the traditional hosting to more advance technology like the cloud, node.js server, LAMP...etc.
Does this mean that traditional hosting with hosting companies are really just for the small med business sites .. that get lot less traffic and lot more static pages?
Or for internal software hosting for enterprises?
Not high traffic stuff like webapps and startups?
@Bob Yes, storage space, cpu and ram because app would be photo heavy.

Bob
7:53 AM
Sorry, popped out for a bit.
@Elizabeth As far as security: Even with a physical dedi you have what's known as out-of-band management.
That would still be a target for attackers.
Overall, "cloud" hosting is a bigger target, but the software involved tends to be kept more up to date too.
Tradeoffs...
@Elizabeth Well, with "cloud" hosting it's often more expensive for resources - you have to pay for the redundant storage, you have to pay for traffic, etc..
AWS et al. are really good with bursty loads. You can easily scale up and down as necessary.
But if you have a consistent (large?) load, a dedi is usually cheaper.
@Elizabeth One of the biggest problems is estimating requirements :P
You don't really know what you need at the moment.
A VPS or 'cloud' VPS tends to be a good starting point.
Then you adjust as your needs grow.

8:09 AM
@Bob Right. I think so too. So if there was sudden high traffic... I could immediately scale up with no breakdowns and no "Temporarily Unavailable We are currently experiencing abnormally high traffic volume" kind of thing. There is also the benefit of having cdns that increases load speed with it's spread of servers all over. Now the issue is who I'm planning this with is somewhat familiar with tech but the basics like a app/ site needs a host.
My partner is strongly nailed to the fact that cloud servers are the most targeted and vulnerable kind of hosting. My partner believes that so much, she wouldn't even use any cloud products like dropbox or icloud ...etc.
How do I convince her that a cloud is actually more secure or as secure as a dedicated one?

Bob
@Elizabeth Also depends on how you structure your app.
You need to structure yours to actually support that kind of horizontal scaling...
(as opposed to vertical scaling. vertical scaling means giving more resources to a single server. horizontal scaling is adding more logical servers, usually requiring a load balancer of some sort at the front)
@Elizabeth Usually CDNs are used to load static resources.
Your dynamic scripts would still execute on your server.
A CDN is basically a very big cache.
@Elizabeth Hmm. Overall it's probably less secure, but not significantly so.
Overall you're probably more likely to suffer a security breach from poor coding or vulnerable software within the VM/server than anything in cloud hosting infrastructure.
Out for a few hours.

@Bob Thanks Bob for the guidance. I think I have an idea in my head so far. I'm heading to bed. Hope to chat again. Cheers! :D

8:25 AM
man, I hate being sick.
I was out cold most of the afternoon

1 hour later…
9:29 AM
hmm
got a bounty
probably getting another one.
And I'm still at more rep given away as bounty than recieved :)
And while I was out sick...

dog door size is clearly incorrectly optimised.

"This poor American bulldog had to have her head cut from a cat flap after an amorous encounter with a terrier went drastically wrong. American bulldog Keeta, who is currently in season, found her head trapped when a small male dog, thought to be a terrier, found its way into her owners' garden in Leicester"

Initially, that reads far more drastically than it really is. "had to have her head cut"

9:46 AM
Knowing terriers, he might have herded here.
Smart little critters.
Can't trust em JRTs

Q: Can Apache Ant fully run a task over a fileset without stopping on the first failure?

SeanI have a target set up in ant which runs a PHP lint check on all modified files since the last check. <target name="lint" unless="lint.done"> <apply executable="php" taskname="lint" failonerror="true"> <arg value="-l"> <fileset dir="..."> <include name="**...

10:03 AM
@Sean I think ant questions are more suited to SO ... stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/ant has over 12000 questions. superuser.com/questions/tagged/ant has only 18
Did the folks on SO tell you to delete the question?

Bob
10:18 AM
@DavidPostill It's definitely on-topic on SO as a dev-related tool.
Not sure if it should be considered off-topic at SU though.

@Bob I was just thinking he's more likely to get an answer over there ...

I hate ants

10:38 AM
I'm pretty sure there's questions about the other sort of ants too.
at least 3 ._.

11:03 AM
Those answers all suck, nobody said "get an Anteater" Zot!

@Psycogeek Possibly because that's illegal

Only because the chemical companies dont like competition :-)

Actually....
someone did

Being smart is a reason for deletion now? That studiohack is an ass

lol
Its not really a practical answer.

11:11 AM
So?
Plenty of answers aren't practical

You can be smart but there needs to be a kernel of a practical answer there.
Then they're not an answer, possibly

Like that guy who asked how to change his BIOS splash screen

A: How to destroy a CD/DVD rom safely?

Journeyman GeekThe proper way is to get yourself a shredder that also handles cds - look online for cd shredders. This is the right option if you end up doing this routinely. I don't do this very often - For small scale destruction I favour a pair of tin snips - they have enough force to cut through a cd, yet ...

That was smartass, but I had a sensible answer before

Now that should Git Between the Keys
Prolly even get that food out of there

11:23 AM
Really bad, how is a cat supposed to use the laptop without a Mouse plugged in?

Using the touchpad
It responds to paw pads

I think that's a wheaten pup

@JourneymanGeek aww

Also, I managed to use Inigo Montoya in an answer <3 meta.stackexchange.com/a/269597/135565

I tried to upvote, but was prevented from doing so by a login dialog

Anyone here play tomb raider?

The new one?

11:42 AM
Or the less new one

I'll likely get it when its inevitably on discount.
The less new one was fun

Im thinking of trying to complete it before the new one arrives
Wondering if it was worth playing
Guessing thats a yest if it was fun

I liked it
and its pretty straightforward
isn't a huge timesink

I just got killed by a wolf

Bob
12:00 PM
@qasdfdsaq I have the entire collection. Installed one of the games. Played none.
...I have problems with Steam sales

Heh. Turns out I bought it back in February but only just realised I had it

@DavidPostill Yeah, I said I was concerned about the question not being suited to SO and whether I should report it to get it moved by the mods or delete it myself.
If it's really out of scope for SU then I can try and look elsewhere, no problem!
Thanks for the feedback either way! I'll see if I can post it back up / un-delete it on SO and set a bounty.

@Sean It's not off-topic in either place. But IMHO more likely to get an answer over there in SO ...

Now I just got shot and strangeld by a perv
Is this game just a string of quicktime events of watching Lara get killed?

lol
I think the idea is to show her as weak and vulnerable
then gradually turn into a mass murdering badass.

12:12 PM
Seems a bit misogynistic

I got tomb raider in 1997-8 played it , it was actually a real game of the year back then, it was not "made for gamers and reviewers" It was fairly easy back then, without it being extensive puzzel , or death defying climbs, or a FPS war shooter. After that it was sold to Devs who just wannt to see me die and laugh about it :-)

Q: Can I recover my word documents from my lost USB?

LorriiI lost my 60 GB USB quite recently back in my school's computer lab. Unfortunately, by the time I got there when I realized my USB was missing, it was already gone. So, its currently missing. I have a few important word documents in there, that were only saved in the USB. There is no auto-recover...

I played a demo of the old 90's tomb raider but never the full game. Didn't have money to buy actual games back then.

How do I recover recovery from a missing disk?!

12:16 PM
The next versions that came out were much harder, and "regular peoples" interest in it started dropping like flies, I then laughed at the Devs :-) because the titles never had the percentage popularity/acceptance/review that the more simple ones had. By then though i could game some, swear better when dying, and fully despised QTEs one of the new ways to beat me over the head.

@DavidPostill magic?

@JourneymanGeek A time machine?

two coconuts, a trained tracking dog, and a goat playing a kazoo?

@JourneymanGeek now i would upvote that

I'm wondering if therre's a temp autosave folder
you could hit a machine with some recovery tool and see if you can find them there

12:22 PM
Or ask the computing lab supervisor if a USB stick has been handed in
Also how the fuck do you save in this game, it keeps crashing

I seem to recall it auto saves.

@JourneymanGeek Yes, but it deletes all this temp stuff when you save and exit word. It only hangs around if word crashes or is killed with the document open.

Hence me suggesting seeing if it could be recovered.

@qasdfdsaq which one is it ? underworld? ledgend? anniversary?

That said, if its in a school lab, things get messy

12:26 PM
Yep, possible but very unlikely.

he should just grab what of the 60gig disk he stored on his 1Gig hard drive, barely taking any space at all, and move on with life.

:(
My toes are painful
Stupid cold.

Else . . . he should learn that taking time to simply back-up flash sticks is worth the time and space it takes to do so.

@Psycogeek: If its important to you, put it on the cloud. That way everyone can get a copy (HAI NSA!)

good luck trying to get a copy back from those (nsa) azzwholes :-)

12:44 PM
Any important file should be backed up in 3 (preferably different physical) locations. At least one should be in a fire proof safe (together with your irreplacable personal paper documents).

I wish you could backup women in case you lose them

yup
Well, I'd like offsite backup, but close enough

@qasdfdsaq are you saying the fireproof safe is not an option?

@JourneymanGeek 3 preferably different physical locations == offsite for 2 of them ;)

@Psycogeek Firstly they degrade quickly when kept in there and secondly that doesn't satisfy the multiple copies/multiple sites requirement

12:53 PM
@DavidPostill I have my backups in different rooms
Once my brother moves out completely, I need to talk him into housing a small system for offsite backup ;p

Problem is you need to use proper cloning techniques

@qasdfdsaq Why does a backup degrade more quickly in a fireproof safe? In any case that would surely depend on the backup medium. For example I don't think punched cards would degrade in a safe ;)

at least the cloning works well for the sheep, especially if you want them to back-up

1:15 PM
(long pauses added here simply for dramatic effect)

Bob
1:48 PM
Hm. Looks like I'm probably making a trip to the not-so-local hardware store tomorrow.
Turns out they sell butane torches.
Saves me from dealing with element14 :\
(Not that they're necessarily bad to deal with, but they're expensive. And have a minimum order if I don't want to pay more on top of that for shipping.)
And then I search ebay and find this:
...where's that montoya picture

2:02 PM
@Bob: I've got a hot water bottle on it

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That sums up a chunk of this listing

Bob
@JourneymanGeek My desktop (esp. GPU) acts as a heater for my feet... whether I want it or not (almost Summer here, getting pretty hot... 36 today)

@Bob: I have an answer with doge (though that dosen't count cause it was a AFD answer), one with boromir, and one with him ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek AFD?

2:06 PM
April fools day

Bob
2:33 PM
@JourneymanGeek o.O
I don't remember that...

Bob
2:54 PM
I'm tempted to make a bot auto-respond to all with a grumpy cat fox.

And one post with "restore from backup" and "VTC as duplicate off" ?
Also. Grrr. Damn popups reminding me that I can upgrade to windows X

3:48 PM
@Psycogeek This one looks good for 24" shooting tent: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Photo-Studio-Table-Top-Portable-Lighting-Light-Stand-Soft-Box-Cube-Tent-/201317567612?hash=item2edf764c7c

I wonder where would I position it. Behind tent? I already have 2 video lights which I can place in front:
Hmm this lamp on eBay has small reflector for long lamp.

4:05 PM
I bought a 90x90x90 tent recently that came with a couple lamps and works pretty good. :)
I don't really know what is going on but I just thought I'd say, haha.

1 hour later…
5:33 PM
I received this emaik, which is a known scam:

@allq, have you received anything like this before?
This is the complete text of the email, except for links.
This email would constitute wire fraud under United States law but the sender is in the UK.

@bwDraco Is that your phone number above +507... You might want to delete it.

@DavidPostill: Not my phone number. It's for contacting WhoisGuard and it isn't confidential information.

@bwDraco nup, but I get endless emails from marketing people trying to help me "build my website"

Bob
That doesn't look like fraud. No false claims. Just typical spam.
I suppose you could say it's made to look more "official" than it is, whatever that means.

btw, the author of BrowseEmAll, Daniel Herken, added me on Linked In :D because we had a few email correspondences and I bought his product. browseemall.com
