A simple question about why adding memory dramatically boosted the performance of an AMD APU ultimately led me to write a highly-detailed technical answer:
66
A: Why did adding memory significantly increase gaming performance on an AMD APU?

DragonLordTL;DR answer The performance of any GPU, including those found in AMD APUs, is heavily dependent on memory bandwidth. The memory upgrade caused a dramatic performance increase because the system previously had only one memory module, and the upgrade added a second module which doubled memory ban...

cool ;p
and that's the best sort of answer
and that's interesting since it makes faster ram useful, even when you don't OC

Great, thanks.
See ya later.

2:27 AM
@Bob it already did :PP my mod ion engine that requires no resources (or more technically, generates its own) :P
although technically a true ion engine is still a reaction engine (it has to expel mass out of the spacecraft to generate thrust), the way I designed it, the net mass of the ship remains a constant despite an unlimited amount of delta-V
it looks like an ion engine, but it behaves like an EmDrive
in the grand scheme of quantum mechanics, it's always seemed insanely limiting that we could only go anywhere by basically shitting baryonic particles (if we're lazy, we shit them at fairly low energy, as in chemical rockets; if we're efficient, we shit them at significant fractions of the speed of light, like high Isp ion engines)
the idea of translating about the universe simply using photons is awesome
receive photons from cosmic rays, solar radiation, etc. --> generate electricity --> propel craft

@MichaelFrank AWESOME Footage

@Boris_yo why shouldn't it be able to?

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ The range is open spectrum, anything from phones to baby monitors to cheese graters can use it (source)

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: meh, such a cheese grater would use wifi, and post pictures of your grated cheese directly to instagram with filters.

Hmm this is the best processor that can work in my mobo newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103913
Why does it have to cost so much -.-

3:39 AM
@HackToHell "out of stock"
I found some "used" ones on Amazon for like $180+... that's quite ridiculous for a very old CPU, 45nm, basically obsolete

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Some other site said it costs 300$
Lost the site in my tabs
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ It's actually fast (for it's architecture)
And it's AM3!

Bleh, I need better CPU and a new HDD.

thankfully I'm pretty good there.

3:43 AM
does want new speakers
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: he would have to replace his motherboard as well though
possibly and ram

that's a very low-end Haswell CPU, and its single-thread performance is much faster; its multithreaded performance is pretty close (and you're not going to see the multithreaded benefits of that 6-core unless you have some magical game engine that can peg more than 2 threads); and given the price of buying that Phenom, the value proposition is enormously in favor of the i3
if you were actually considering buying one of those Phenoms, you could get a new motherboard and a new Haswell i3 for less money than buying a new Phenom
unless you have to also buy new RAM -- if your current mobo is DDR2, you'd need DDR3... and anyway, if you have DDR2, your total system performance will be lightyears slower than a Haswell system with DDR3, because DDR2 will easily bottleneck with 6 cores putting out that much raw performance
and if you don't need new RAM then the original analysis stands: the i3 plus a new mobo is cheaper than buying that Phenom
and better

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ That's ........ sad
$400 vs $120 :'(
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ RAM is DDR3

Trying to install centOS 7 on VirtualBox on Windows 7 32 bit

I get to the boot screen and when I click on "Install CentOS", it just goes blank. Nothing happens any further

That never goes well for me.
try restarting it
the VM that is

and no, I have no idea there.

8:21 AM
tried. didnt work,.
@JourneymanGeek Could it be an architecture issue?

There is usually a message. 32 bit usually makes more sense for VMs tho

8:43 AM
So wanna install Dota 2 :|
I am not more productive without it anyway.

@JourneymanGeek done installing :)
Now on reboot, I just have a command line. No GUI.

And?
Nothing wrong with that

8:59 AM
@DragonLord Did anyone check to see if the UMA frame buffer size changed? speed can only account for about 20% at the max even, double rate for about 10% . Allocating more of the system ram to video ram would be how much? noise on the web suggest that the A10 APU UMA can be set to auto in the bios , allocating 128m to 1&2G of memory. IF that was true in this case, allocating 1gig when there is 4 there, and 2gig when there is 8 there , would be a natural for AUTO ? I dont Do amd or APU.

Bob
...Adobe
Why must you make it so difficult for me to pay you.
Do you not want my money?
And this is why piracy is a thing.

They were relating the APU shared memory ammount to the old AGP memory ammount, where you could set how much was shared , while this ammount was still usable by both if needed in the olf AGP. There also where the GPU itself benefitted from ram, the BIOS could be set for just how much was set out for it.

9:13 AM
The old AGP, that i do remember :-) In that quetion the guy doesnt have enough memory for the 64bit OS itsefl :-) the pig that it is. Then he runs a high end game too, and he has some sort of "shared memory" that can exist. Plus he only uses 1600 memory anyways which your links themselves suggest would be a 10% decrease. so i believe that some attribution should be made to the idea that he was completly choked out on memory for a modern system, with a modern game.
And shared would finialise it as a killer.

hello
I have a question
I bought a new wirless card
because my onboard one on the motherboard was bad
the question now is, how do I know which one is being used?
and or should I disable the old one?
why are there 3?

how does a wireless card on the motherboard go bad? antenna disconnects? drivers flucked up, cant get control of it because dual software conflict of MS own and the adapters software

Bob
@Vader You should probably disable it if you aren't going to use it.

12:28 PM
@Vader diable everything there, enable one by one, when it works stop :-)

Bob
Uh, don't do that :P
Psycogeek likes to disable everything he can until something breaks

ahh gee your no fun

alright
how do I do it than?

if i can break it, i can fix it :-)

sure...

Bob
12:29 PM
@Psycogeek sure, sure, but it could cause a problem later, and not everyone has the time, patience or knowledge to find the cause or fix it :P
@Vader Just disable the onboard one.

@Bob yes but which on is it the top one or the middle one?

Bob
Better if you can disable it through the UEFI (BIOS).

the bottom one is the new one

Bob
@Vader ...GbE is wired.

GbE means LAN?

Bob
12:30 PM
?
It means Gigabit Ethernet.
It's a standard for wired communications.

is the middle on my ethernet port?

Bob
"LAN" is above the phy layer, and "LAN" has no meaning there.

Okay, I will disable the top one

Bob
You can have wired LAN connections. You can have wireless LAN connections. Heck, you can have a LAN connection over a phy of a user with punchcards.
@Vader That's the wired one, is it not?

so much for the value of abbreviations , they could have abreviated Family controller instead :-)
@Vader but he said it would be better to disable the onboard back in the bios/uefi

12:33 PM
why?

and i would agree

what's the difference?

the memory for it will never be allocated for one?
it would never get enumerated.

brb

@Psycogeek lol what happend ?

12:40 PM
That is the last time i get drunk, flickr.com/photos/marcoferrarin/14793998992 got home yesterday and OMG which one is mine

My College is using MS SQL server 2000 yay !

@HackToHell it happens just like bob says it happens, start trying to control what is on and off and the system has so many interdependencies it takes forever to figure out how to control it all.
did you know if you turn off "tabletinputservice" the screen snipping tool wont work, WTF , why MS no longer know how to program?
if you turn off aspects of "live" so the e-mail doesnt connect to MS to get your ISP e-mail, the e-rmail wont work, and it always checks with microsoft as it leaves anyways.
I have no idea how anybody steals the OS anymore and thinks that MS doesnt know, because there is at least 4 ways it connects that are not discussed when ripping off the OS, 2 of them require no DNS.
I can guarentee that MS has a big ass nice/naughty list on a server out there somehwere :-)

1:00 PM
@Bob I want to see this.

I do not rip off the OS, I got more licences for all this stuff than I need, but i also dont like things doing stuff that i didnt say it could. For a OS that has all that Stuff stopping ME from doing things with my own computer, it has balls to be doing stuff itself without me.

1:16 PM
@JourneymanGeek Because there's no 2.8 - only 2.48GHz
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉ Here is your idea in real life: facebook.com/photo.php?v=844916842186501

with obsolete win98se a person knew they had a virus is 20 seconds, only 4 things were running. With XP you could stop and close everything , if anything was still running at that point it Had To be a virus. With windows 7 there is so much stuff going on behind the scenes, a virus could take over steal all your data , leave a note on the side "thanks bud" and half the people using it wouldnt know anything even occured.
i guess making these comics isnt going to get much better.

@Psycogeek: feel free to run windows 98SE then ;p

@JourneymanGeek What about Windows 3.1?

Sure, why not?

@JourneymanGeek sure just needs a little kernel adjustment so it works with more than 1G of memory, then a little fix for accessing large hard drives. That would only leave finding all the software that was entirely obsoleted, and going back to playing Doom 1

1:30 PM
@Psycogeek: There's always tradeoffs.

I worked with a system that was still running win95 , and it was horrible, they had such a horribly small ammount of memory it was paging to disk prior to getting done booting even.
can you fix my computer that takes 5 minutes to boot? sure let me call up the vatican and see if there is an exorsist available. If that doesnt work we will keep the priest around to do last rights.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek See what? LAN with punch card phy? :P

Yeah ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The latency would be... amusing :P

@Bob: it would

that 3rd generation processor, with 60K memory , and 24x80 display is sure to not be outgrown. Moors law says that it will be decades before a computer rivaling it and costing less would exist :-)

@Psycogeek Some NAND cards are slow and some are fast when buying from China. Those that are fast are made of higher quality material? Is material quality what decides speed?

@Psycogeek Must be Fallout 2 tanker FOB navigator.

@Boris_yo i think you decide if the speed exists or not? There are sandisk class2 flash chips that are as fast as some china flash falsely classed as class 10
how many time more memory than these things , have they squished down and put into 2x2mm X.5mm thick on a cpu die?

2:46 PM
@Boris_yo I think besides great advanacement made in the nand being smaller and working faster , they do things like this "Built-in ultra-high speed control chip, a 4-channel parallel processing technology, 4-way simultaneous operation flash " Basically a "raid0" controller. to get all the stuff that has to happen working simeltaniously in different blocks and cells and all at the same time.

@HackToHell well, if you completely ignore all the libraries (Boost, etc) and C++11 and such improvements, any book by Stroustrup will still be relevant for learning the fundamentals

Bob
@HackToHell Where's the problem? :P
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I wouldn't really expect a uni course to do anything with C++11 just yet

Bob
I always thought you were home on Saturday

just the past 3 weeks or so.

Bob
Ah
At least you're being paid ot?

5:44 PM
!! s/ot/straight-time overtime/

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ At least you're being paid straight-time overtime? (source)

but yeah, the straight time overtime (8 hours * my hourly wage) more than makes up for working 20% more hours in the week
even considering wear and tear and gas for my car
it's still a $ win

Bob
Not even extra for weekend? :(

my company takes a lot of flak for having absolutely abysmal anti-employee HR practices -- and rightfully so! -- but the one that's perfectly reasonable is "if people work overtime, pay them straight time overtime, even if they're "exempt" from US labor laws that would mandate them by law to pay it"
I'm okay with straight time; I haven't gotten overtime (1.5x / 2x) since I was a Non-Exempt intern :P

Bob
I think the legal requirement here was 1.5x for sat and 1.75 sun (excluding specific awards)

5:47 PM
if you're a "professional" in the US (the classification is sufficiently loose that some seriously non-professional jobs fall in) you are "exempt" from 99% of the labor laws that the government enacted

Hi guys... what if I buy a laptop from Dell or HP... the operating system is gonna be in English right? What if I need the operating system in German? Do I have to buy a new license for Windows 8 which is gonna be in German?
I mean when I buy it from Dell.com or HP.com... in US...

If you are lucky: yes.

one of the big things is you are allowed to make a fixed amount of money per year irrespective of whether you work 2 hours or 24 * 365 hours, and the government doesn't give a fuck if you end up making like $3/hour as a result

We sometimes got Dutch OS's in the Netherlands. Which is horrible.
Luckily we had an English OS disk to reinstall with

non-exempt (people who are not "professional") are required by law to make overtime, with 1.5x their hourly wage for normal overtime, and 2 times their hourly wage for holiday work

5:48 PM

I can't download and install language packs, so that I would have Windows in like 40 languages?

It is not that I mind localised OS's. But I do mind improperly translated and utterly incompresensible translations.
Not sure for win8, but in win7 you could change the language for a few versions.
(e.g. not for home or starter, but in ultimate and/or maybe enterprise you could)

Windows 8 Professional and Windows 8 Enterprise both allow you to buy the OS in language X and install a language pack for language Y, reboot, and bam your UI is in that language
not sure if the language packs are an additional $$$

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Not as far as I know
..and this is for all editions of Windows 8 as well as Windows RT

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ wat
What's a "professional" and why would they be exempt?

5:53 PM
the problem is I don't get Win Professional or Enterprise when I buy a laptop from Dell.com

@Bob I think it's based on how much money you make, and the requirements for getting hired.

@JANORTS you don't need Pro or Enterprise any more to install language packs windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/language-packs#lptabs=win8

if you're, say, a cashier, or a trash man, you are definitely not a professional, so you are "Non-Exempt"... this Non-Exempt status grants you employee rights that are comparable to, say, Western Europe's normal employee rights (overtime, etc)
if you work in an office and make a more lucrative wage with benefits etc, you are probably "Exempt", which means you are a highly paid Indentured Servant with no rights :P

Bob
@JANORTS IIRC Win8 has language packs that are cheaper than a full new OS

WIKIPEDIA says about Windows 8:
All editions have the ability to use language packs, enabling multiple user interface languages.
However, in China and other emerging markets, a variation of Windows 8 without this capability, called Windows 8 Single Language, is sold...

Bob

@Psycogeek But wouldn't a license that allows sublicensing of content allow for that, too?
