@Paul I tend to favour Hgst, though those are harder to find now.
Most recent drive is a toshiba
Seems OK so far

Q: Windows 8.1 upgrade results in Green Screen of Death

user42864after accepting Windows 8 proposal to upgrade to 8.1, and after restarting, my system behaves as follows It login normally Seconds after login a green screen with "please wait" written on it appears. The mouse button is also in " please wait" mode. I can use Alt+tab to make things switch in the...

Green screen of death?
In addition to the blue screen of death, the black screen of death, the white screen of death....
When will we finally get a pink screen of death ?

Bob
6:10 AM
@Hennes Uh... that would be the VMware one.
Or is that purple?

6:41 AM
I think that one was purple.
And the black screen of death is probably 'the monitor turned on but does not show anything'

7:27 AM
Monitor says "you saved 47 trees" (green mode) so how many have I killed ?

7:52 AM
Morning

@Bob Heh, interesting results this morning. The ODYS POS turned on after I restored power, battery still at 90%. The Surface Pro was depleted
@Bob I'll check it out, we only got the ODYS because it was cheap and it was available. We're just evaluating products, to get a better idea of what we really need

Yesterday, I was chatting about XP - and having it is a security issue. However, I also have a database full of emails on it as this machine is used to send spam (legit emails). I'm thinking, is it possible to buy a firewall (hardware) which will only allow access from 1 single machine on the LAN?

Point of Sale or Piece of S***?

To make it more secure?

@Dave: You'd still need access to send out emails.

7:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek The latter ;D But we use it for the former

So its a POS POS?

Yes, but I'm OK with opening up port 25 for outbound only. However, firewall hardware is expensive. Can the same be achieved with a spare router as that has a firewall?

@Dave: Practically, yeah, sure.

First product I ever got which uses "Windows 8 with Bing"

7:56 AM
I'd consider virtualising the box tho

Thanks @JourneymanGeek, I'm off to research!! :)

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Stream 7 is only 7". There's 10" available, but I think they run $150-$200

@Bob That price is perfectly fine. Important bit is having USB

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Bay Trail uses less power than Haswell.
Though I'd expect the Haswell ones to be able to go down pretty low...

I might work in your remaining suggestions into wakey-wakey today and go for some final test runs on the ODYS

Bob
8:00 AM
@Psycogeek's suggestion of waketimers is pretty much perfect for your goal, I think

i wasnt really suggesting that , i was just indicating where in the myriad of possible options one of the wake stopping things is.
I did suggest looking into the task scheduler though , because , well i donno, how a computer can do ANything when in full standby. but the triggers they put in that thing, not just time based can.
It seems to me if a computer is in full standby only something like a piece of hardware with power still run to it should/could wake it up. At least with the net junk, which now can work in standby too, that can be turned off.
The web is full of layers of issues with standby, expecting a distributed program to work right with it, would be crasy :-) setting up computers TO work the way one wanted should be easier.

@Bob I still have to see what the capabilities are
First of all, I don't really know anything about them. Second, I don't know how they work on this tablet. Third, I don't necessarily know when power will be restored, but I do know that I need the device on as soon as power is restored. If that can be modeled with wake timers and they work right on this device, great

8:18 AM
Usually the device (desktop) being "On when power is restored" is a hardware item, no OS in existance, no power at all, like blackout. Comming out of standby when "switching from battery to ac power" seems entirely possible. Comming on From Full off, when power is added to a portable , all on how they set or allow the hardware to be set.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Wake timers specifically deal with the RTC

...how do I force Office 2013 to install on NOT C:? o.O

Right now I just assume that a solution built with them would lead me to a situation where I need the devices to be on, but have to say "Well, we can't get them to turn on until 6am" :P
@MichaelFrank Change the drive letter of C?

8:45 AM
when power is restored and no AC-on bios option exists, or is hardware set to turn on when power comes back . . then WOL it back up once power is restored? or wake on BT ?

@Psycogeek This device has no BIOS and no WOL, there's no wired LAN port

@OliverSalzburg I suppose that would work... but I feel like it will break a hell of a lot more.

9:00 AM
@MichaelFrank I was kidding ;) I don't remember the installation process of 2013 all too well

The "Stream to install" option can only install to the same drive the system OS is installed on. But it looks like the msi and trial versions were different.

@OliverSalzburg: It probably has a 'bios'
Well UEFI, and it fastboots.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, possibly. But I couldn't find anything regarding it in the manual
...which I only quickly searched for keywords and came up empty
I'm open for suggestions regarding being able to enter any system management interface just to browse around ;D

You might have to root it :-)
it woudnt be the first time a manufactured tablet or laptop provided little to no options to adjust any aspects of the hardware

9:28 AM
see how to turn off fastboot for windows 8

Eyeight... So how do I connect my smartphone to Wi-Fi hotspot and be able to share that connection wirelessly again?

9:45 AM
@Boris_yo It doesn't work like that...

@Boris_yo you want to turn your smart phone into a repeater? wouldnt you have to have like 2 ways to connect, or software that hops back and forth between connections and caches I/Os one at a time. I am guessing nobody is going to work on that project.

Bob

@Psycogeek Repeater... Yes this is what is it called. I have Airlink 101 Wi-Fi USB small stick that goes into something referred as "Virtual Mode" and I think acts as repeater. Can be?
@Bob In a can? Sounds like paradox.

10:07 AM
lol

Hey bob is stocking up for the zombie apocalypse i see, Make sure you get a case of these too

'Its a wind up' ?

hi
I this regarding mobile or linux or windows ?
Is*

@Akatsuki yes.

10:24 AM
@Psycogeek Does it matter what kind of shape filter I get for pitcher? There's one in oval shape and rectangle. Former filters at it's capacity 125L and latter 200L so except this should I consider something else?

@Boris_yo the one that matches the pitcher you got? it is not just how many gallons can pass trhough, but how long it was in there, how much particals that clog are in the water, and how well it was treated (to prevent growth) and how long your willing to wait for it to pass through a filter that is more clogged.

@Psycogeek How long it was there? Oh not, I didn't buy used. I just bought pitcher with 125L filter capacity type which is recommended for 1 month use or whichever is earlier.

Right, you may not get the whole capacity in gallons/liters, from any of them. 1 month life is rather expencive. Is this like Ink Carts and single serving coffee makers :-)

@Psycogeek I would say I fill 2.5L pitcher twice per day and have 125L filter which should be used for no more than month. Do you think it makes sense to buy pitcher that has 125L filter type that costs $5 less per unit rather than pitcher that has 200L filter that costs $5 more than former?
Hmmm... The one I bought was $8 more expensive, yet came with 6 125L filters but the one $8 less expensive comes with 5 200L filters.

10:40 AM
@Boris_yo its not the printer it is how much the ink cartriges cost ? that is the long run, assuming the thing doesnt get broken or actually works as advertised.

@Psycogeek Yes, so if the difference between 3 pack 125L and 3 pack 200L is $5, given they are changed monthly that's $60 per year difference. However I don't change them after 1 month because they last more.

Will you use it to filter all cooking water, and drinking, and making coffee and tea and reconstituing juice and for kool-aid ?? or selectivly where taste counts most? Because your dream of dealing with (filling) it 3 times a day, you should probably get the larger capacity , longer filter. But when the Xmas gift thing wears off, and it is no longer black fry day , and you go back to your usual routine ? then maby less is enough?

0_0
Applying update operation X of 24530 0_0

10:56 AM
Black Fry day? FRY? :)

Well 2 times per day and I only use it for coffee... But just the thought of not leaving review about seller and informing consequent buyers makes me think about it...

@Boris_yo so you think it will get all that nasty black stuff out of the coffee and reduce the chemical drug component , and make it actually drinkable?

@Psycogeek Not... Just why pay $7.95 more for same pitcher with 125L x 6 filters than same pitcher with 200L x 5 filters?

@Boris_yo qualifies as overthinking it, based on the ammount spent. it isnt a $400 sell phone. you could change your mind later , get 2 toss one :-)
no 2 year contract (which they have here for water softeners and water delivery and all) , soo you wouldnt be getting in deep with either of em.
It wont be obsolete in 2 years with a dead battery, and a value of 1/10th what you paid for it :-)
YOu probably wont have to firmware upgrade it

11:37 AM
hm

@Psycogeek Yeah I am OCD in this case which is part of me and my perfectionism. Know that feeling when it's in your head and you can't stop thinking of it? Dang!

a Game , guess what it is via the picture only. (assuming i dont mess it up)

@Psycogeek Seen a lot of those in China online stores for a few bucks...

and . . . ?
you have to guess what it is 80% correct.

11:59 AM
Bluetooth speaker?

A yellow ball circular device

ball? BALL!
2

squirrel

SQUIRREL!
Squirrel?
(Actually, I saw a rat that's bigger than some of the chihuahuas I've seen today)

@JourneymanGeek it is but that is not 80% correct yet.

12:02 PM
...do dogs actually chase squirrels? I haven't seen a squirrel AFAICR, let alone a dog-chased one.

@ThatBrazilianGuy: Some dogs tend to chase anything they can.
We don't generally chase anything, too much work ;p

Some cats tend to ignore anything they can. :P

Our local cats are like that too ;p

#2 what is that thing the arrow points to

12:13 PM
an overclockers beer fridge
#3 easy one, and it is not a BBQ lighter :-)
#4 logo munged because it is a giveaway
#5 trickey one, but you may have seen these comming out for the holidays.
#6 Logo removed again.
#7 WTF is it

12:45 PM
What is going on here?

@OliverSalzburg i was trying to do a game, guess what this stuff is only from the picture.

(And it looks like no one is interested ;p)

something easier ?
#8 shrunk so logo is not easily read.

Bob
1:32 PM
That picture.

Wow, that's a huge laptop

Bob
2:12 PM
Hmm. @allquixotic what about $200 for a Win8 tablet with 2 GB RAM? :P
Actually surprisingly low.
Screen's not as good, though. Nor the camera.

lol
Probably most of it's crap, but 'good enough' ;p

Bob
Seems decent.

Oh, those!
Then no, its probably not too bad

Bob
But the Lenovo one earlier, costing 50% more, has a better res, slightly faster CPU and more storage.
@JourneymanGeek Yea, that's the problem. "probably"

Bob
2:17 PM
Not many people here have experience with the low end of these :P
Actually... @OliverSalzburg how did that tablet feel? The POS 1 GB RAM one.
Usable? Smooth?

(Asus has a decent track record, builds a ton of tablets, and probably reuses the shit out of some things to drive costs down)

2:36 PM
"Here's someone that buys a windows tablet and complains that it's not an Android. Wow! " is that worse than buying an android tablet and complaining that it isnt windows :-)
I think you have to know first what you will Do with any of these things, or what you might end up doing with them , before knowing which OS even you would buy into when getting them. Then you need to know How each one would do those things.
Then how each one would do those things with added 3rd party programs. Which you might have to test 6-7 of them to even find the best program for doing the things you want to do.
A person couldnt just rent , or borrow , or on-loan this stuff for Long enough to even get through all that. The only option is to buy all of them, toss them out one by one, and finnaly buy the $1400 one and have an acceptable unit that does.

Raspberry model B+ is USD20 instead of USD35. Here it costs 4x more instead of 3x =/

2:58 PM
I call this "Amazon Inspired Confidence" :-)

@Bob The tablet itself is okay for what I used it for. The touchpad on the keyboard is horrible

Bob
@OliverSalzburg It had an attached keyboard? o.O
How's the Windows on-screen keyboard?

@Bob Detachable
@Bob Fine

Bob
That's descriptive :P

Well, it's not worse or better than it is with the Surface Pro

Bob
3:04 PM
Useful point of reference :P
I'll probably drop into a local shop tomorrow and play around with a Venue Pro 8 or something
if I can find one

I haven't really used it much, only for login when the system was switched to US keyboard layout

"2160x1440 Half 4K (2K) QHD " uhh why not just call it 2K or is it QHD/2.
It probably has a 1/2 Quad processor in it too :-)

3:59 PM
Always remember it is easy to get a job in marketing, if you pad your resume , stretch the truth a bit, and accept a lower salery after claiming to want a huge one, If you create a perception of having way more qualifications and no flaws . its is all still marketing ;-O
If you get a job doing tech support, remember you can always blame all the problems your having on the other guy, or the whole system in general. If things get really bad, you just Quit one day, and re-install yourself a week later. Getting rid of any other employees is just a part of the job, and the bad employees that bring you down , just call the CDC on them (for quarentine) .

4:22 PM
But if your a programmer it is a bit different. If you not happy, just throw you hands in the air and say "You do it" because you barely understand your own code a week later, it's not like they can. The entire system comes crashing down, and nothing gets done until they fix whatever problem you were having. When you show up late for work, blame it on the driver. If you cant do your work, blame both the system and the other employees everytime.
When they ask you what is wrong, hand them a long list of un-readable blather , and say "you figure it out" .
When your having a really bad day, just destroy all the data in the place and start yelling out unrecognisable assemblies of words (with numbers) and then go home, until your replaced by the new version.

4:37 PM
.NET developers who target Linux, REJOICE!

cool " targeting both Mac OS X and Linux" they are going to take down the other systems with em :-) and the crappy .net programs .
if you cant win, make the other guy lose

OT: I got Meta Tag badges!

HOLY HELL http://developers.slashdot.org/story/14/11/12/1557239/microsoft-to-open-source-n‌et-and-take-it-cross-platform

so we've landed a space probe on comet and MSFT has opensourced the .net Runtime

4:44 PM
nice job @Sathya pushing the open source angle in your new-found CEO position
I'm proud of you buddy
I wish they'd simply contribute to Mono instead of open sourcing their own stuff, though

in due time & course..

wow, they also released it under the MIT License instead of the MS-PL
so people will be able to use this in all kinds of applications
hopefully they push the whole .NET source code in that repo soon, so we can start porting it to Linux
I'm eager to see if it runs better/faster than Mono on Linux due to the advanced optimizations they have
this is huge for OpenSimulator

@Psycogeek The Prime membership?

Bob
5:06 PM
@allquixotic :D
@allquixotic Eh. .NET is currently far better optimised than Mono.

5:33 PM
@Bob will the heavy optimizations in the Windows-targeted .NET CLR also be portable over to Linux? that's the question that remains unanswered
if they have to have a clr-core-linux.c and a clr-core-windows.c, that'd suck
but if they can just #ifdef some shit and use 99% of the existing code, wahoo

Bob
@allquixotic Most of it should be platform-independent.

@Bob for the source to IL compiler, I agree, but the JIT stuff? wouldn't that be dependent on C library function calls, kernel/VM design, etc?
like all the heap allocation stuff, etc? all of that is hugely platform-dependent

Bob
Hm.

Windows and Linux don't even manage pages the same way
swap vs pagefile
also, many of the libraries will be extremely platform-dependent: file I/O (does System.IO in the .NET Runtime support forward slashes for parsing paths? how about characters that are acceptable in file names on UNIX-like OSes but not NTFS / the Windows Shell?), networking (WinSock is different than UNIX sockets), processes (fork and exec vs. Spawn), threading (Win32 API vs. pthreads), etc.
and I haven't mentioned GUIs yet, which are part of the ".NET core libraries" but not the "server stack", so who knows if they'll even bother with WinForms or WPF
hosting ASP.NET on Apache instead of IIS?
lots of things to think about

Bob
@allquixotic I was mostly referring to the core math/collections/linq. Nothing that interacts with the system, of course.
@allquixotic Efficiency went out the window as soon as you mentioned Apache.

5:44 PM
well yeah, Math and Collections won't need much platform-specific work, but the core VM that either interprets or JIT compiles MSIL will need to be heavily worked on to have a consistent memory model cross-platform
my guess is they're going to dump the Windows-specific code on GitHub and then maybe half-heartedly work on porting it to Linux and Mac with in-house Microsoft devs, and hope the community does the rest

6:10 PM
Hey there, I was wondering if anyone known what could be causing all my screens to randomly terminate?

@JordanRichards can you be a little more specific? are you talking about the screen command?
you're lucky I have some recollection of your specific setup, or I'd have to chide you for being impossibly generic and for not stating your platform and exactly what you're trying to do :P but since I know you are running stuff for your twitch stream on some Linux box, I already kind of know what you're talking about.

@allquixotic Sorry for the late response, yes, I am speaking of the screen command.
For some reason, all of my screen sessions randomly terminate.
I do not notice a pattern either, it seems awfully random.

@JordanRichards screen itself does not normally terminate for any reason, unless the process it's daemonizing terminates.
two likely possibilities spring to mind: (1) running out of memory will cause the kernel's OOM Killer to find the most memory-hungry process(es) on the system and terminate them; or (2) the process(es) running with screen are hitting some fatal error and crashing
you could screen -md bash and run your actual command in there; that will give you a screened interactive bash which will keep running (and display stdout/stderr of the program) after the program crashes
example, if you're running screen -md mono something.exe now, you'd run screen -mdS bash bash, then screen -rS bash, then run mono something.exe within the subshell, then hit Ctrl+A Ctrl+D to detach
then rock on until you notice mono crashing, and once it does, run screen -rS bash to see the stdout/stderr
the -S argument of screen lets you specify a unique name for the screen session, so just remember whatever you put there when you start it initially, so you can -resume it later

Thank you for your response.
I am rather sure that I have ran out of memory. The first thing you said.
Last time I checked when they were running I was running at 91% full.

Bob
@allquixotic md? :S

6:26 PM
I assume the solution would be to be careful on how much load I am putting on my server. I think a private minecraft server was pushing it :L

6:41 PM
@JordanRichards check dmesg to see if the OOM killer has activated

7:29 PM
@Bob I'm guessing you don't want one of those :D
E3 1230V3, 8 or 16 GiB of RAM, and 3 3.5" HDD slots + 2 2.5" HDD slots
looks like they could easily customize it with any requested internals though. I'm sure you could get a Haswell Xeon and 64GB of RAM.

7:44 PM
@OliverSalzburg It turns out that you have to download the trial version of Office 2013 to be able to choose the install location.

Alibaba is like that, without having to get a passport and actually go there

@allquixotic If that distance is 40km... then Hong Kong is TINY! :o

2 hours later…
9:21 PM
@allquixotic Just got my Dawngate refund.
le sad

@MichaelFrank I got mine a few hours ago
it's a loooot of money :D

I have a $380 cheque sitting in my car that I really should get around to banking...

@_@ do it before someone steals it ya foo'

It's from my power company, pretty sure not even my wife can bank it for me.

neither could my wife
because my wife does not refer to anything

9:48 PM
Why do we still get path too long errors? :(

@OliverSalzburg Get your Inbox invitation, yet?

@CanadianLuke I got mine a couple days ago.

@MichaelFrank Same here

10:21 PM
Yeah. Ivo invited me

10:57 PM
I don't see the benefit to it

11:12 PM
I've tried it. It keeps crashing ;p

What inbox are you guys discussing?
is it some new thing on those internets?
oh my....
this is brilliant!

Q: How to fix or exorcise a Devil Printer

SuperkrootLately, I have been having a problem with a particular printer. Its an HP Laserjet P1006 printer, small compact, almost cute looking, but dont be fooled! For whatever reason, this devil machine hasn't been working on a particular computer that needs it. All my attempts to get it to work for more...

best question I've read all day.

11:46 PM
@Kristian beta gmail client thing

@JourneymanGeek Not quite. They made it clear that Gmail wasn't changing. Inbox is simply a new way of looking at it.

@MichaelFrank: client for gmail, not gmail client? ;p
