Journeyman GeekI flagged yet another spammer today, and found she had an older post that got by. People who embed pixel-based images in .eps files need to die!

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Might be just a standard logo image.
Sometimes, the corporate requirements for spacing, sizing and colour (down to specific pantone colours, with RGB/CMYK approximations sometimes allowed) are crazily strict.

@Bob So they never print anything with their logo on it that extends the resolution of that image?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg They might have different sizes available. I do know it's a bloody pain in the arse to try to replicate a logo from specs.

I already found a vector image now, I just don't see why they would offer me 4 downloads, one of them being an EPS, when it's just the same image embedded in an EPS
Or am I missing something here?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Oh, if it's a download for the logo specifically, then... ya :P
I thought it was a logo embedded in some other document.

11:43 AM
@Bob Oh, yeah, that would be alright, I guess
Logo hunting is the worst...

Hiiii. Say, what happens to a bounty on a question that is never answered during the bounty's duration?

It goes into never never land

Sounds far.
Disappointing though. I threw my first bounty because I was hopeful to know the answer because I felt there just had to be one, and niet.

The bounty sponsor NEVER gets the rep back, period - it can go to one of 3 places: 100% of it goes away and nobody gets it; OR 50% goes to the highest voted answer during the bounty and 50% is destroyed; OR the bounty giver awards the bounty (100% of it) to the winner
Answers with 0 or negative votes are never eligible to automatically receive half a bounty though

Oh, I don't mind. I sort of knew I wouldn't see it again, but i thought it always defaulted to someone somehow. But on an utterly unanswered question, true, if the rule is that the sponsor never sees it again, there's little choice but to destroy it.

If the sponsor could see it again then there would be a lot more bounties and people would get good answers and then not award the bounty to anyone and keep their rep
It has to involve some risk to make sure that you're serious about it

1:10 PM
Well personally I'd have made it a moderator process, or something. If there are any answers, then the moderators can study them and decide if the unawarded bounty should go to one of them. But even though I'm not gonna cry about it, it's not like it's the sponsor's fault if NO ONE answers.

I've probably already seen the Q you bounties but out of curiosity which one was it?

How to left align the window's title on Windows 8, something like that. Lemme find it.

Q: How can I left align title-bar text in Windows 8?

ijprestIn their infinite wisdom, Microsoft's UX designers decided to center the title-bar text in Windows 8 (obviously looking to Windows 3.1 for their inspiration). I'm willing to put up with a lot of the recent changes, but this one is driving me mad. Is there any way (built-in, or 3rd-party app) to...

Oh yeah. You know what, WindowBlinds 8 may be able to do that
I'll check on my desktop tonight

Check soon because the bounty is almost up. :p

They already hook so many DLL functions in the UI that I wouldn't be surprised if it could do that
How long do I have?

1:13 PM
Oh, even less than I thought. It expires in 4 hours.
But well, not like you're utterly in need of reputation points anyway, sir over-9000.
Come to think of it, where does that common expression, "over nine thousand", come from?

Booting my desktop up, I'm glad I checked chatbefore leaving for work lol

Aren't you gonna be late for work?

That's a meme
I may be slightly yes but I'm still wet from the shower and trying to dry off lol
Just sitting here in my bday suit ;p

Lol, I thought I was the only one shameless enough to do that.
You have understanding bosses? THat's good. I hope I can have that one day. I may do better job than many and I may be more dedicated than many and all, but I can't guarantee being on time for crap. Even just yesterday, I would've been late to school if I hadn't paid a taxi (because I didn't want to be late on my first day and the day I was supposed to do a coming-out announcement in front of the whole class in the beginning on top)

gah i uninstalled windowblinds for some reason
well my bosses are fairly understanding but we also have a time we're supposed to be there (ish) - however, the consequences are directly related to what you were expected to be doing when you weren't there
missing an early meeting is a huge problem, whereas, coming in a little late on an ordinary day when nothing is immediately due, is generally fine

1:18 PM
I see.

today is just a regular day because our usual tuesday AM meeting was canceled

I wish how late Iam was even remotely related to how important what I have to do in the day. I missed an exam last term. Although I was feeling very depressed and I had forgotten to write it down.
Anyway speaking of late I need to get ready and leave soon. If you find something just leave your answer and I'll look at it later. There's a bounty grace period, after all. Thanks in advance, for trying, at least!

Quick.

that's a screenshot of Windows 8

1:22 PM
Uhm, why does it look exactly like Windows 7?

because i chose that particular theme
you can customize themes in WindowBlinds to have different styles, appearances, etc
you could theoretically design a theme that looks exactly like Windows 8 but with the title text left aligned
posted an answer :P
going to work now, cya

If you can confirm that 1. left alignment is doable while leaving the rest of the theme untouched and 2. it doesn't tax the PC particularly/have other consequences that's rather great
Bye, I'll be off too, and thanks.

2:16 PM
@Ariane I think you'd have to custom design a theme that specifically does just this, but there are good tutorials online for how to create WindowBlinds themes, and it doesn't require any programming or graphics design expertise -- in fact, if you just want plain vanilla Windows 8 theme with left-aligned text, you might not need to do anything except write a configuration file.
Actually, you might not even have to do that -- WindowBlinds comes bundled with a graphical program called SkinStudio, which is the program that lets you design your theme.

Bob
@somequixotic Aero?

@Bob one of the built-in themes in WindowBlinds was to make Windows 8 look like Windows 7, and I guess as part of that they brought back left-aligned window titles, but they also dug out the old Windows 7 Aero graphics and transparency effects, too.

Bob
That's interesting.
I thought it was just a theme to look like Win7.

it's probably even easier to use SkinStudio to say "hey, let's load up the standard Windows 8 theme, and now... I want window title text to be left-aligned! Done! Save! Load it!"

Bob
Bringing back Aero goes a bit beyond that.
Though, StarDock does some amazing things.

2:22 PM
@Bob well, it's a theme that does look like Windows 7, but in every way that counts -- even the transparency effects, minimize/maximize, etc... I think the new Windows 8 interfaces give applications with admin rights the capability to push arbitrary shaders as desktop effects
it's not literally taking the Microsoft Aero code and plunking it down

Transparency as a desktop effect has been supported as far back as win2k ;p

Bob
@somequixotic Perhaps not (though I wouldn't be surprised if it still existed in a system library for legacy reasons), but the glass effects et al. wouldn't have been easy to implement.

frame for frame though, it sure looks like Aero
even when minimizing windows and dragging one window over another
they even have a Vista theme with Vista-like visuals
it's pretty impressive

Bob
As I said, StarDock does some amazing things.
I'm not sure if the likes of Raymond Chen would be proud or pulling their hair out. Perhaps both.

they do
/me has modernmix installed

2:28 PM
@Bob I think they appreciate what Stardock does, because a LOT of power users' hate towards Windows is calmed/dulled/ameliorated by Stardock's efforts
Stardock is arguably one of Microsoft's closest corporate allies, apart from the likes of Adobe and larger companies
and have you EVER seen Stardock release ANYTHING that wasn't for desktop Windows? How about Mac, Android, iOS, Linux? I never have.
they might have one old dusty Mac program in their entire catalog

lol
@somequixotic: they also get it
no DRM, reasonably priced software

Bob
O.O
Also, @somequixotic, shouldn't you be getting to work? :P
@somequixotic That's not too unusual.
With smaller (and even some large) companies, it's not odd for all developers to know/use/focus on one OS.

lol about once or twice every week someone asks a question on Amazon Answers about the Surface Pro, and in 99% of those questions, the OP is confused about the difference between the Surface RT and the Surface Pro.
Microsoft completely failed to educate the public about the difference between them

Bob
@somequixotic The marketing for Surface/Win8 was retarded, as a whole.
Hrm.
 But one thing kept getting kicked up by usability tests: People booted up the computer and just sat there, unsure what to do next.

That's when we decided to label the System button "Start".

It says, "You dummy. Click here." And it sent our usability numbers through the roof, because all of a sudden, people knew what to click when they wanted to do something.
> Instead of the Start button, there were three buttons in the lower left corner. One was the "System" button (icon: the Windows flag), one was the "Find" button (icon: an eyeball), and the third was the "Help" button (icon: a question mark). "Find" and "Help" are self-explanatory. The "System" button gave you this menu:
Well. WinVista just threw all that out the window.
Went back to the flag.
I guess lots of people familiar with Windows/computers. Kinda leave the few beginners (both old and young) with the same problem, though.

@Bob honestly, as long as the button's in the same physical location on the screen, I don't think most people would care if it said "Start", "System", "Toilet", showed a picture of a cat, a flag, or Steve Ballmer's face.
(also as long as it responds to the windows key on peoples' keyboards; that's important too)

Bob
Yes, that's with people familiar with it.
I'm talking in the context of Vista - ignore 8 for now.

from Windows 95 through Windows 7, people have been habituated to either clicking the thingy in the bottom left corner, or tapping the windows key, to do stuff with their computer

Bob
2:50 PM

I guess lots of people familiar with Windows/computers. Kinda leave the few beginners (both old and young) with the same problem, though.

8 broke that, while Vista really, honestly, didn't, because the same muscle memories work
who cares about new users? :P they are not going to know what to do anyway, no matter how you design it

Bob
@somequixotic The original design choice was for new users.

new users are a clean slate with no preconceptions or impressions of how to use the computer, and they'll have to be shown stuff at first

Bob
And it worked.
If you want to argue that point, well, 8 never really broke it - the key still works, and you can still get a 'start button' in the same general location.

I think new users could be habituated equally well to XP, Vista, 7, 8, Ubuntu Unity, GNOME Shell, Cinnamon, GNOME Classic, or pretty much any other DE... new users make mistakes; new users don't know wtf to do; new users can get used to almost anything, no matter how good or bad it is in terms of objective UX principles; and new users need to gain experience to become useful -- these are the facts

Bob
2:52 PM
But that's beside the point. I just found it interesting that they dropped "start" for what they used to have (over a decade ago), which was considered difficult to use at the time

I agree to an extent that it's strange that they did research that says "the word "Start" helps newbies understand where to begin", and then about-face on that whole thing
but I don't think that having "Start" (the actual text) on the screen is the only way to help new users

@somequixotic: because tablets ;p

Where could I get a Windows XP image without any service pack?

@OliverSalzburg NO
Just no

@OliverSalzburg: actually, I think the MSDN ones were like that

I just want to run a critical application for a client on it :(

@JourneymanGeek Nope, I checked

Bob
@OliverSalzburg At this rate we're going to eventually give @somequixotic an aneurysm...

They only had SP3 and one that didn't specify the SP, and it turned out to be SP2

2:58 PM
@Bob: Yeah, OS/2, XP sans SP...

Bob
Why would you want RTM anyway?
@JourneymanGeek Don't forget Win98 :P

@Bob It's a surprise ;P

Bob
@OliverSalzburg And SP2/3 won't work?

@Bob: oh, mine is super dodgy ;p

Heck, the only XP install CD I have is SP2.

@Bob Correct, it has to be SP0

@OliverSalzburg That is really weird.

Do they check for a specific build number?

@Bob I'm looking for a specific bug

Bob
Or is it some new security feature (in which case said program is probably a pile of shit)?
@OliverSalzburg Ah.
Wait.

there should be some sort of fine for talking about Windows XP SP0

Bob
3:01 PM
Does that mean one of your clients is actually running on XP RTM?!?!?!
I don't...

I just found a CD with "Service Pack 1a" included
There was a 1a?

Bob
I don't know what to say.

If Oliver's client happens to be a nuclear superpower's missile silo control system, I'm moving to Pluto.

@Bob No, this is just for the lulz

Bob
@OliverSalzburg sigh of relief

3:02 PM
I think it had something to do with eolas

Bob
Though I am now starting to doubt your sanity :P

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh yea. I think it was their JVM.

I am
and I'm the crazy fella who has a OS/2 VM

why don't you try installing VirtualBox 1.0 on Windows XP RTM and running Linux 2.0 kernel in it? WHY NOT!

3:03 PM
Shit, I think I just found a version of Home RTM in German

"On February 3, 2003, Microsoft released Service Pack 1a (SP1a). This release removed Microsoft's Java virtual machine as a result of a lawsuit with Sun Microsystems.[56]?

In a case for Microsoft Works...

@somequixotic: sure

Oh snap! I struck gold!

ITS ON YOUR HEAD.

3:03 PM
There is a Works CD under it!

Bob
> Some products have been removed from Subscriber Downloads due to the terms of Java-related settlements Microsoft made with Sun Microsystems. These products are no longer available from Microsoft in any form, but may be available through third-party resellers or Web sites.

Bob
Huh. XP doesn't seem to be on that list...
Here's the thing.
Win98, OS/2. They're different OSes.
Fun and interesting to play with.
XP RTM vs SP2? Essentially the same OS, just even more horribly insecure.

they should bring back Clippy for Windows 8.1 and include him built into the operating system and compiled into the executable for the kernel so he can't be removed, then lock down everyone's system with secure boot so you're stuck with Clippy forever, and make sure he always listens in the microphone for "Hello Clippy" (like OK Google Now)

Bob
That's why I just don't understand why you'd want to experiment on XP RTM :P
@somequixotic May as well include MS Bob while you're at it.

3:06 PM
@Bob: I also has msbob on windows 7 ;p
it still runs

Bob
wait what

@JourneymanGeek you deserve a medal

a site called winhistory hosted a copy of MS bob. I had a VM... ;p
@somequixotic: or a voucher for grief counseling and cake

@JourneymanGeek Pie!

I can't wait to see if this is actually RTM. Sadly it's German :(
And Home :\

Bob
3:09 PM
@OliverSalzburg Can you change the language, e.g. by editing a config?

@somequixotic (from back a bit) so you teather your phone for your only internet connection? And are you more often using the phone itself or the desktop tethered?

@Bob No idea. I saw some UI Language Pack thingie on MSDN earlier

actually, I think I got bob off winhistory.de. They don't have it any more

This is also just a recovery CD, not a real release version

can't be that... aaaard to find tho

3:10 PM
But it doesn't seem to make any difference. Maybe it's just a different print on the CD

@Psycogeek honestly, on weekdays, I use my phone directly without tethering more than I use my desktop itself, because I'm so tired after work, and I use my phone exclusively for personal stuff all day; but on the weekends I play games and do development stuff on my desktop and ignore my phone
it depends on what my schedule is like

@somequixotic and you have no cable or dsl actually connected to the desktop or router or whatever?

first person to make Microsoft Bob run on this gets a medal free psychiatric evaluation

@somequixotic: hmm, run qemu inside it, windows 3.11 on top of that, the bob

@JourneymanGeek lol.....

@JourneymanGeek Is it 16-bit?

I had a friend who was sent here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

@Bob I think Microsoft Bob was one of the first true native 32-bit Windows programs, so no

ok, thats almost a valid reason for that
almost

Bob
@OliverSalzburg ...what kind of developers are MS hiring?

We tripped over that when we produced a CD for a client and we named the main executable on the CD start.exe
There was only 1 button in the whole thing, in the About box

But it made for a lot of WTFs
